The Marcy Series Box Set by Linda J. Burson – review by Erica Shoebridge

The Marcy Series Box Set: Books 1-3The Marcy Series Box Set: Books 1-3 by Linda Burson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a very intense trilogy. Marcy is increasingly shown to us to be an unreliable narrator, in that we aren’t sure that what she is perceiving (and what she is narrating) is actually happening. She is troubled by haunting dreams, has extensive confusion, and has trouble telling the difference between reality and her dreamworld. Both Brad and Liam seem very suspect, with high emotion and controlling mentalities. The style of writing also conveys a wonky mental state. Even when a conversation is happening between Marcy and one of the men, it has a quality of recounting a memory; it doesn’t read like the event is quite happening in real time. While I can see how using that voice feeds into the depiction of her skewed world, personally I found it difficult to wrap my head around, and a bit unsettling to read. This is a very unique and emotionally intense set of books with an intriguing framework.
