A Veil of Gods and Kings (Apollo Ascending Book 1) by Nicole Bailey – Review by Santana Hicks

A Veil of Gods and Kings (Apollo Ascending, #1)A Veil of Gods and Kings by Nicole Bailey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I decided to read this book because I love Greek Mythology. It is a retelling of the story of Apollo and his lover Hyacinth. It starts off with Apollo living on Earth with his mortal sister named Temi, not wanting to ascend to Olympus.

Apollo’s father, Zeus, wants him to ascend now that he is older and to force his hand, gives him a choice. Ascend now, or mentor under Prince Hyacinth. Zeus gives him a year to live on Earth as a human but has to spend the whole year in Nirnia under the mentorship of Hyacinth

Things are tense between Apollo and Hyacinth. They dislike each other but there is a will they/won’t they tension throughout most of their interactions.

I enjoyed how the author wrote from different points of view, including some of the more minor characters of the book.

I honestly don’t know why this book has gotten a lot of low ratings on goodreads. A lot of other reviewers are rating her writing based on Greek Mythology itself when the author herself in the beginning of the book wrote that it was a retelling in her own spin of things. For what it is, it’s very well written.

The only downfall is the romance factor. I was expecting more romance between the two men especially since they had some sexual tension going on.
