My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Laced with Aztecan culture, this story is about a little girl born with a mark of a goddess of darkness that scares her family into giving her up to a Shaman, who promises to help guide her to control the beast he’s certain lies within. Treating her with kindness and helping her to tame her emotions serves its purpose until his true intentions are revealed and she escapes on a quest to save her people. Through unleashing her inner “beast,” Azreya also learns to trust herself and the goddess who has shown her favor. This was a fascinating tale that brought to life some insights to a long lost people.
