My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a fun, historical, fantasy read! The setting is a kingdom with castles, kings, queens, carriages and horses, knights and more. The main character is Princess Zarina, the 13th born child of the King and Queen. She is known to be selfish but beautiful, and shows her selfishness when she decides she needs the best dress in the kingdom for her party. Zarina and her aunt go to see a dressmaker in the middle of the forest. The dressmaker is strange and Zarina feels that she put thoughts in her mind about the choice of cloth. She makes the deal with the dressmaker and it turns out to be a black magical dress. Zarina is left on her own and has to make it back to the castle, a day’s carriage ride away. She meets some of the locals who do not like the King or the Overseer who take and take from them, but don’t take care of the locals. She finds out the King and Queen have been killed and sets out to figure out a way to save her kingdom. Princess Zarina and all the other characters are so likable and I loved the magical dress! It was a fund read and I am already looking to see what else the author has written.
