Beware there may be triggers as the story delves into a lot of things but the main one is rape.
As Laura says The Summer I Went Crazy is now a straight literary fiction novel. A New Adult story. If it looks/feels familiar it’s because it was once called Coyote Summer but it has been rewritten.
Rich kids at a private school doesn’t stop atrocities from happening. In fact sometimes they are worse because they think they are more entitled, that they are more than privileged, have more money, more power.
All it takes is one summer. One crazy day. One party. One single action. One defining moment. One hour for lives to be changed. One minute for a life time of horror, pain, suffering, torment. One promise. One second for a lifetime of guilt. BUT it took 40 years for the one phone call that would change everything.
It is an intriguing story because it is told in the first person as seen by a young man. His lack of conscience, values and actions and the questionable morals annoyed me. He is not a nice person but Laura did well in creating his character. He struggles with what he witnessed and is full of guilt that carries through decades with him. Who looks back on his past and that of his friends and realises he should have done more. Now, forty years later, and one phone call…………….
My emotions and feelings were all over the place with this one. It is definitely a thought provoking story.
