Sometimes you can pick up a book in a series out of order and still be able to connect in quickly. This is not one of those. I highly suggest reading book one before you start this one. I did not and it took several chapters for me to get a feel for what was going on.

In addition to that, where this story begins is after a major event, so you should have feelings about what is happening to the characters, but without knowing what they’ve gone through previously and having that build-up, it’s difficult to connect with the characters right away. And that’s not a writing problem, it’s just a reading experience problem because I didn’t read them in order.

There is a lot going on in this story, so you have to pay attention. Although, the world-building is good. The action, drama, and suspense keep things interesting.

If you start with the first book, as I should have done, this will make a great reading adventure for those who love Urban Fantasy with a twist.
