Ashes of Aldyr is the first book in the Obscured Throne Trilogy, and the first book I have read by Russell Archey. The best way to describe the feel of this book is past-post apocalyptic. Elves, humans, dwarves, and magic trees, what more could you ask for?! As a full time working single parent, I loved how there were many short stories that all connected. I felt this was a very good book for putting down and picking up again later. It is very dark and rather spooky, a perfect read for the season.

What an absolute pleasure it was to discover a novel that was so much more than just a YA paranormal romance. Keeping in mind that I accepted ahead of time that I am more than just a bit too old to be considered as part of the target audience, I enjoyed this book so much more than I predicted. Main character Alena is part of the forbidden race of witch-vampire hybrids. As far as she knows, she is the only one of her kind. Alena’s life becomes exceedingly challenging as she struggles to balance classic high school drama and romance, with her blossoming powers and paranormal abilities. The storyline developed at a nice pace, the ending will blow your mind, and leave you unable to wait to begin the next book in the series.

I read ‘Stranded’ together with my 8 year old daughter, and we both loved it. One of her all-time favourite places and themes is the ocean and it’s inhabitants, so she was easily enchanted with the story and characters. I was pleasantly surprised at how much we both learned along the way as well. ‘Stranded’ was the perfect bedtime story for someone in grade three.

Initially I assumed that ‘The Bow’ would be the third and final book in the ‘Her Three Immortals’ series. By the time I finished binge reading ‘The Bow’ I was genuinely STOKED to discover there was a fourth book! Although you could read these as stand-alone novels, I do recommend starting at the beginning because the main character really grows throughout the series in a really gratifying way. This is a steamy adult series, made even more enjoyable by its engaging and fast paced story line, and its rather seamless way of modernizing the timeless theme of mythological multi-lover romance. Can’t wait to read the fourth book!

Love’s Refrain is Book 1 of The Stardust Duet. Readers follow Kat Monroe and Phillip Gordon on their journey of love and discovery. Initially when introduced to Kat’s character I worried that her personality would be written as a bit basic and predictable, but I quickly saw her character deepen and develop throughout the novel. A heart-breaking romantic tale of commitment through time, this is a lovely read to curl up with in front of a fire and disappear into.

Readers follow Luci Delacroix and her fiancé, Beckett, as they travel to Luci’s recently inherited family estate. Upon arrival, Luci and Beckett quickly discover things are not all as they may seem. This is a quick, intense read. If you like curling up on a rainy night and binge reading a short(ish) story, this is the book for you.

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. The storytelling was vivid and colourful both physically and emotionally. Reader’s follow fiery Princess Rowan on her unintentional and unwelcome journey through an unfriendly neighbouring kingdom. I loved how she stayed true to her character throughout her challenges, even while falling in love. The ending took me COMPLETELY by surprise, and I cannot wait to read the next book.

‘No Way Out’ by Amy McKinley is the perfect balance of adult romantic heat and action-packed Mafia suspense. McKinley did an excellent job creating characters that were exciting, unique, and easy to sympathize with. I loved how the relationship between Max and Liliana develops, and how they build trust in each other to overcome some very dangerous challenges. I will also add that the ‘adult’ scenes are very well written. If you enjoy or have been wanting to try out the romantic suspense genre, this book is perfect.

This was my first time reading K.L. Montgomery’s work, and I am glad I did! ‘Dangerous Curves’ is a box set of three novellas, all taking place in the sleepy town of Bryce Beach. Readers are introduced to main characters that continue through the series-centering on Sunshine Baker-a curvy, Christian, YA librarian. Sunshine and her friends are put up against robberies, unexplainable dead sea creatures washing up onto the shore, and classic ‘who dun it’ murder. Montgomery’s stories are as easy to enjoy as they are to read, and although the main character is Christian, it did not feel like a pushy theme. My favourite thing about all three of these novellas is how relatable and adorable the characters were. This is an excellent set to take to on vacation to the cabin.

The battle between good and evil continues in this second novel by James Talisman. I do recommend starting with the first book to gain some deeper levels of the characters before diving into this one, however it’s not mandatory and I could certainly have enjoyed this book as a stand-alone. Readers will now begin to experience more detailed layers of the power in the All That Is explored through the theme of unity vs selfishness. I loved following the fabulous trio of main characters through their journey of self discovery. They will literally travel through periods of time on Earth to collect pieces of an artifact that will be instrumental in protecting the planet. Simultaneously, a violent reptilian race travels through space towards Earth with a new destructive power unlike anything before. Will the trio pass the challenges before them in time to save the planet? If you love a good sci-fi novel that will touch on some of the most interesting time periods in our history, you will love Journeys Though TimeSpace.

In this wonderfully illustrated children’s book, author Samantha Shannon explores many challenging and important childhood emotions. One of the over all themes was how to acknowledge and face fear of the unknow. This book demonstrates how compassion, acceptance, and friendship are vital tools to use in life. The story line is easy to follow, and the complexities of fear-based reactions are demonstrated in a simple yet engaging way. My 7-year-old read it out loud as part of her summer reading practice and loved it. We will be looking into the other books by this author as well!

Being dead sure comes with it’s share of surprises, including two new links. One to Mortal Raef in the Overworld, and the second to Grey-Don of the Underworld. The very man she kissed to seal a deal in order to save her brother’s life in exchange for her own. Vanessa’s soul has apparently been sent to Elysium, and there Vanessa will unmask the enemy who has been focused on destroying her. On the way she will also make many new and strange friends. As someone who supports ‘non-traditional relationships’, it was extremely refreshing to read a book that centered around relationships that are defined by how much love you have within you to give. I enjoyed this book more than its predecessor, which is hard to believe because that was an extremely enjoyable read as well. I can’t wait to her next book in the series!

Being a fantasy/sci-fi novel, Journeys Through SpaceTime is not my typical go-to choice for reading. However, I always love a good world-building series, and this book delivered. Author James Talisman’s debut novel explores the classic Good vs Evil theme, in a very original yet comfortably familiar manner. As indicated by the title, the story takes place over different periods in time. Readers will follow many different characters, points of view, and story lines. All are joined by the over lying central idea that we are all One and connected in the universe. Although I enjoy flipping back and forth between perspectives, this book does it consistently and it did take some time to establish the actual plot due to the level of character description used to develop so many points of view. The language and thinking of the characters is very formal, which may have been a tool used by the author to show how the characters are all connected in the MultiVerse. I was left with the impression that the book could be easily adapted into a TV series, as the chapters felt like episodes and many of the character’s story lines would make excellent separate books on their own. By the end, I had fallen in love with many of the characters and looked forward to discovering how the story would unfold. I also look forward to reading book two.

This contentedly old-fashioned country romance will make you fall in love with the main characters and the surprise plot twist will keep you guessing until the very end. If you have yet to read a novel by Wareeze Woodson, this one is an excellent place to start.

Another extremely enjoyable historical romance by Wareeze Woodson. As I read more of their work, I am continually impressed by how real the characters feel. Their faults and flaws make them even more lovable and make it easy for readers to connect with the story. A fast marriage under tense circumstances leaves Lady Isabel Carlyle and Viscount Rutherford reeling to get to know one another. The mysterious deaths of the Viscount’s two prior finances and attempts to end Isabel’s life make trusting one another difficult in this fast-paced page-turner.

This is the first book I have read by L. A. Detwiler, and I am beyond impressed. This twisted and gripping novel was the most original books I have had the pleaser to read. Suspenseful and horrifying, get ready to jump inside the minds of characters in what feels like an authentic dip into madness. Multiple points of view told from different timelines keeps you guessing until the very end with a very unexpected plot twist. I look forward to reading more from this Author.
