Apocalypse Thoughts was an amazing story! This book follows a 17 year old girl, her younger brother, and their older cousin as they try to navigate a “hyena filled world“. Our main character is extremely relatable to multiple age ranges. Her wit and inner monologue was both hilarious and sad at the same time. The storyline was fast paced and kept my interest through the entire book! I can not wait to see more from this author!

This was such a fun and different read then what I would generally read.

Spring Break in Georgia for Kella O’ Malley turns deadly when people start to become cannibals.

Time is ticking to deliver something important on the path of the Appalachian Trail, with the help of other people she may be able to keep herself and little brother alive.

This reminded me of ‘The Walking Dead’ meets ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ which is one of my favorite shows. I don’t care for zombies too much but the premise was something I could not resist.

Being set during a pandemic also gives the impression of the COVID pandemic that we are currently still presently in or this could be a future where zombies exist. There are so many stories and tv shows about zombies and with each one, I know I do not wish to be apart of it. And if I am, I can hope I can be similar to Kella as far as her role.

I think this was written well and kept me engaged. I recommend for people looking for something different to read.

This was an incredible read. Perfect read for all the mess going on now. It was written so well. Kella and Huck’s relationship just makes your heart happy. The sibling dynamic is such a refreshing change to majority YA books. I need to read the next one so bad! It will having you laughing along with the characters. The banter is amazing! The humor just makes it feel real in what could be scary reality. Each character just flows so well with each other.

Fantastic

This book was fanatical. I couldn’t put it down and read it the entire day. I won’t give spoilers but Kella and Huck are my two favorite characters. Both are neurodivergent and I love the draw that Huck’s character does to me. I hate when books leave off for an ending such as this one but I cannot wait to read the next in the series and I’ll read the prequel in the meantime. Will Huck, Jumper, Kella and the rest of the team make it to Stella with the data need with the cure? This author draws you in and has you wanting more within the first few pages.

When I first started reading this book, I was so drawn to the story about a post pandemic world while living in an active pandemic world. As the story went along, I was more drawn to the character of Kella’s brother, Huck and how he interacted with the world around him. The details of the entire story not just the visual world but the internal thought process and emotions she was experiencing as she was traveling with her cousin, younger brother and other trail hikers helped me fully submerge into the store. This is a great book!

This is my first book by this author and she didn’t disappoint me because the story about the end of the world has me hooked. Could be because of the world dealing with Covid recently so it feels like we’re never going back to the way it was before. We are trying to survive the changes that are happening. I was sitting on the edge of my seat reading this book. I couldn’t put it down. I love the siblings Kella and Huck. I really enjoyed that there wasn’t really heavy romance and that there was ore to the book. Definitely look forward to reading book 2 if there is one.

I had no expectations going into this book, but I loved it all the same. The real question is: is this book fantasy based on the current global pandemic, or a prediction on what is to come? Here is to hoping is the former!

Kella is such a relatable protagonist, and the relationship she shares with Huck is really sweet. Every character in this story is intriguing and well written, and there were several scenes that had my heart pounding! Kella survived a pandemic and now is on a mission with her cousin and brother. During her spring break, the pandemic takes a turn and she’s left facing hardships that no teenager could have ever expected. Meanwhile she is struggling to keep herself sane, her anxiety at bay, and herself and her family safe. It would be a lot for anyone, but especially a teenage girl. The “Hyenas” as she calls them sound terrifying, and you really never know who to trust. I definitely am looking forward to the next in the series. Though it does not sound like The Pox Ward has the same characters, I am definitely planning to get into more work from this author, so I will start there!

If you like dystopian YA with no heavy romances and a strong relatable character, and coming of age meets The Walking Dead, then give this book a shot!

I could not stop reading this book. The author writes perfectly for a YA read. The main character, Kella O’Malley, is definitely a well-formed teen character. There is nothing worse than teenage hormones, except for maybe growing up during a time where people are crazy from a disease and others try to eat you alive! Growing up on the Appalachian mountains myself, I loved the author’s description of the journey as well. The fact that Kella is also trying to take care of her “autistic” brother during all this makes it such a great read. The characters’ thoughts are well thought out and formed. The author did a fabulous job of keeping Kella’s character presented as a true teen living in a terrible time.

I can’t say enough about this book. Kella, the main character is a snarky, brutally honest girl who we hear all of her inner thoughts and feelings and internal monologs throughout this story and it truly is what makes this story the masterpiece that it is.

Her fierce protection of Huck, her brother who is unique in his world views is an added conflict while they try to traverse the Appalachian trail with something that might just save the world from a virus gone awry turning humans into virus spreaders in one bite.

in our current covid world this story is compelling and the cliffhanger you are left on is a powerful one making you want so much more. you won’t be able to put this one down!.

Apocalypse Thoughts is a wonderfully written, witty, and easy to read Young Adult book. All of the characters, especially Kella, are so easy to like and feel like you know personally. The relationship between Kella and her brother Huck is wonderful and honestly refreshing. As these teens trek through the Appalachian Mountains to carry CDC data north out of Georgia, they learn many valuable life lessons. They are stronger than they think, braver than they’ve ever had to be, and truly care about each other. Not only is this story action-packed, it can be used to teach young adults that not every task is easy but if you work hard at being a valuable member of a solid team, you can just about accomplish anything! The author hits a home run with her writing style and storytelling and I am looking forward to reading the prequel to this book, The Pox Ward.

Kella and her brother Huck are very interesting characters for a post apocalyptic world book. As characters who never really become those end of the world trained killers, it’s refreshing to read about people that would be like they are in every day life. Jumper it’s one to keep a lot of secrets and it’s shocking to see each new one revealed. Kella’s journaling in the trail log books would be something I would look for at each stop of I were in their world. A new take on an old genre, very good!

I didn’t know what I was expecting when I dove into this book but I wasn’t expecting to fall in love so quickly. I am sister to 6 siblings as well as lots of cousins who are like my siblings and I know how the interactions can go. Kella and Hucks Interactions felt as if I were watching (reading) my own. I didn’t expect to truly love the “world” you know it’s the apocalypse what’s there to love lol but it was just set and described so perfectly. I found myself rereading certain descriptions and interactions over again just to get a better sense. It’s a weird read in a way that the pandemic has affected us but not triggering to me at least. I highly recommend setting some time away and reading this all in one go.

This book wasn’t what I was expecting, but in a good way. I really couldn’t get enough of this book. I enjoyed it a lot. A captivating plot, with lots of twists and turns, plus wonderful colorful characters that we met along the way, they are all super intriguing and relatable make this a fun read. the care these characters or friends they have for each other is very hopefully, and how they care for others that they find or meet. This book is very relatable to what we are going thou right now, with our own pandemic, but also with a more turning point were its like everyone’s more zombie like. This fast pace, enjoyable, wonderful read will have to wanting to read more. A must read.

Wow, I LOVED this book! There were many similarities to the world we are living in right now which made it interesting and also a little nerve wracking. A pandemic hits the United Stated and Kella, Huck, and Jumper need to get CDC data north to help save the mutations. So they start hiking the Appalachian Trail. I loved the characters and their personalities! Kella writes in log books and draws fun stick figure drawings while trying to figure out who she is. Her brother Huck is on the spectrum and compares the hike and their world to a video game with constant chatter and updates. They meet up with other survivors and hike and hike. The setting is described in great detail, the characters have great traits and personalities, and the twists and turns are constant. I LOVED this book and read way too late into the night hoping I wouldn’t have nightmares about “hyenas” coming after me!

I really love this story! My heartstrings were tugged on more than once in this reading. Which made me really enjoy this and as I became entranced by the characters. The story is pretty interesting but these characters are the stars. The characters have spirit, drive and talent. I have really enjoyed certain ones while others I could do without. But they all add to the story. The author did a great job making me feel for these characters. I was filled with happiness, devastation and fear right along with them.

I finished this very quickly. Once started it was hard to out down. I am eagerly looking forward to the next one.

A different dystopian adventure
Based in a post-pandemic world where everything seems out to get you, we meet Kella. A sassy girl who is trying to keep her brother alive and navigate the drama associated with transitioning to adulthood in an apocalyptic world. The range of characters and Kella’s dialogue made for a funtastic read. I didn’t realise going in that this was a part of a series but that did not seem to matter. My favourite part would have to be Kella’s relationship with her brother Huck. It was just totally awesome. Brilliant book that I recommend.

Apocalypse Thoughts is the fifth book in the Pox Series by Kendra Griffin. This is a young adult story that has entertained me as an adult. I would say this book could be for fifth grade and older. The story is a dystopian, post-apocalyptic adventure story. I love Ms.Griffin’s storytelling abilities. She created a world in which I was pulled in to experience with Kella. Kella is an amazingly strong character. She joins a group of tweens and early twenty-year-old characters. She is to carry data from the CDC to the northern Appalachian Trail. What will Kella run into on her journey? Those who travel with Kella will assist her in her quest? I highly suggest this book to find out these answers and more.

Apocalypse Thoughts is the second book in the Pox Series, but can definitely be read as a standalone. It’s set in a world which was recovering from a smallpox-based global pandemic, but then was hit by a new and deadlier wave. The story follows a quest through the Appalachian Trail, narrated by unlikely heroine Kella whose main goal is keeping her brother alive.
Kella’s brother, Huck, is my favourite character. He’s neurodivergent and brings a great perspective to things with coping mechanisms such as using video game metaphors to make sense of the situation they’re in, and entertaining everyone by retelling the entirety of the MCU. I like that Kella and Huck stand up for each other, even when they’re often frustrated with each other as well.
This is definitely not an escapist book for readers wanting to forget about COVID for a bit. But that said, it’s a chance to explore somewhere new from the safety of your home, and will make you grateful that at least we don’t have to deal with zombies!
I would recommend this for teen and young adult readers – it gets quite gory and violent at times so would not be suitable for younger readers. Many of the characters have experienced the loss of someone close to them – parents, siblings, grandparents – and at times they discuss how this has affected them.
This book gets five stars from me! It’s great if you’re looking for a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

A book which strikes the chord in this pandemic times, Apocalypse Thoughts is centered around a girl Kella and how she encounters the pandemic which has taken over the world and save her dear ones.
A pandemic has made humans mutate into cannibals, and no one knows what caused this or how fast the mutation spreads.
Kella wants to save herself and her brother Huck from the pandemic. Both of them along with her cousin Jumper start hiking on the Appalachian trials armed with a very important information that can change everything. They must hike as fast as they can and stay ahead of the infected people, called the Hyenas. There are tons of things which could go wrong including shortage of food and water.
Kella keeps a running log of all the challenges she faces as they escape the Hyenas and try to stay ahead of the race and just live. This is a story of courage and bravery and we all can relate to this in our current Pandemic. The narrative is gripping and can be easily read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Apocalypse Thoughts was a great book, I didn’t want to put it down. It is the 2nd book in the Pox Series, but I didn’t read the first. I was worried I wouldn’t understand what was going on, but that was not the case at all. The author did a great job filling the book with so much vivid detail. Think of it as COVID 19 times combined with every zombie movie out there… but with humor. The book follows a group of teens/early 20s as they navigate through the Appalachian trail during an apocalypse. The book is told from Kella’s point of view and I love the way she describes things. With her on the adventure is her brother and her cousin. Along the way they join up with a couple other people, who leave, but reconnect. The book is fascinating and I love the imagery. I was able to envision what the kids are going through, and the terms they came up with perfectly fit what we are “seeing.” The ending was a total cliff hanger, which was pretty upsetting to me. I kept looking at what I had left, and where the kids were on their journey, and thought it would wrap up nicely. Wrong. There better be another book ASAP!

One thing that sucks me into a story more than anything is the voice of the writing, whether that is through a narrator or the character itself, and the relatability of the characters themselves. In Apocalypse Thoughts, we follow teen, Kella, and her younger brother Huck as they try to make their way up North without dying from starvation, dehydration or a plethora of other things that could go wrong. The sassiness and sarcasm in Kella is so relatable, it’s a breath of fresh air to read a story from a teens perspective and the character actually sounds like a teen. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and now find myself wanting to go back and read the first book in this series! I highly recommend this book if you enjoy dystopian thrillers featuring misfits just trying to survive and finish their quest without being turned feral.

This was my first book by this author and about an apocalyptic world. I was so glad to read that it didn’t take place in New York like every other world ending book or movie. This is the 2nd book in the series but it isn’t hard to follow along. I must admit, Kelly, Huck & Jumper handled being survived off a pandemic that ends society much better than I would have, lol. And with the way these characters are superbly written no one could say differently.
If I had them at my side I would say “bring on the end of the world as we know it”

This isn’t your typical end of the world book. It’s filled with humor and teenage angst. It’s harnessed with pain, laughter, and hope. I was hooked from the first line.
The main characters are developed beautifully. Kella is stronger than she realizes and I love Huck. Stargazer is one of the sweetest people I’ve read about. She’s smart, brave, and a fighter. Finch is Interesting. Like a father figure but at the same time crushable. The story made me reflect on my own skills and how’d I’d manage a pandemic of this level. The last chapter had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I didn’t even realize I was at the end of the book. I cannot wait for another book. I need more.

Although I haven’t read previous books in this series, this book is good as a stand-alone read. This book has older teens on the cusp of adulthood, as well as young adults who are all struggling with who to trust during a catastrophic portion of their lives. There is an epidemic, there are masks, there are vaccines- all of which eerily parallel some of today’s issues. If you are looking for a captivating story that you simply can’t put down, then you have found it! This reads so easily, after going through our very own pandemic. Kendra Griffin takes you on a whirlwind of different elements with Apocalypse Thoughts, with her characters and the world she builds for you. I think what I loved the MOST about this book is the main character. The not quite yet adult, Kella leads the serious story with lighthearted humor that had me laughing and relating all at once. She is a sassy no-nonsense type of girl that we can all relate to, or have known someone like her. The life of the party, even when there is no party. Her traveling party add into the fun/adventures that await them. This book has everything you would expect from an Apocalyptic time, with action and duress, complications and twists all around. This is like modern day Covid meets The Walking Dead, but not too scary (think more in terms of a teen read than a full on scary zombie book). I started this book yesterday afternoon, and writing up my finished review less than 24hrs later. I couldn’t put it down! I have not read the other books prior to this, so it can easily be read on its own, but I will be going back and adding the others to my must read list. Overall, this is a 5 out of 5-star book.
