Grave Digger Academy by C.A. King a fantastic five-star read. This is number one in the Grave Digger Academy series, and I am so excited for more. I love how C.A. King creates this environment that sucks you in and wraps you in the story straight away, the characters feel fully formed straight away, you don’t need pages and pages to get to know them. I adored the light-hearted moments in this story, it added a levity that balanced so well. Do not miss this amazing start to what I am sure will be a sublime series.

Not a bad introduction into the series. A school for the witches who would protect the world from the creatures that necromancers raise-a new take on magic with heavy Harry Potter influences. The protagonist is very likeable. She asks questions that the staff at her school would rather she didn’t ask and it makes for an interesting dynamic. The pacing is very quick which makes it a book you can finish in about an hour, leaving more time to read The next installment.

Very easy to the point good read. I got a harry potter and zombie vibe when I was reading, which are two things I enjoy and having them in the same book was very entertaining. Makayla is a young girl that ends up finding out interesting things about herself that she didn’t know she could do, first off thinking because she ended up in a school that took kids that nobody wanted int here own school, and learn that she could do things that she really couldn’t have been able too. But then finding out that she could become something either very amazing and for the good or something that is forbidden to even talk about. I enjoyed that this book focused on a girl main character, you really don’t see that as much, which was great which made this book more appealing to read. If you like a little magic, grave digging, zombies and a family’s little secret this book is a must read.

C.A. King is an amazing author. She has written different books across different genres. I have never gone wrong when I buy a C.A. King book. This book was no different. It is a fun, fast-paced, paranormal story. The attention to detail is what makes this book a must-read. The characters are complex and fully developed. Makayla is the main character who wants to go to a paranormal academy but the small problem is that did not get into her first choices. She was accepted into Grave Digger Academy. There is a difference between “gravediggers” and Grave Diggers. One puts the body into the ground and the other keeps the body on the ground. Makayla and her classmates have a lot to learn about the dead and how temperamental they can be. Join along as we follow Makayla in this story to see what she learns at Grave Digger Academy.

You’ve heard of necromancers, but have you heard about the witches that stop the dead the necromancers have risen? This book takes a very well known dark magic and tells it from the other side. The good guys, the Grave Diggers.

I really enjoyed this book. I love tales about witches and other supernatural beings. This book was filled with fables and had a Harry Potter Vibe to it which was a bonus in of itself.

Makayla, the main character, is an outcast. In her family, she is the only girl, the only one with red hair and the only one sent to the Grave Digger Academy. With Necromancy being illegal, and as far as anyone is concerned, a “dead” craft, the Grave Digger Academy is where all of the untalented and rejected witches go.

Makayla starts off hating the fact that she is there but as time goes on, she realizes that maybe she, perhaps, belongs there. Things seem to be easier for her and all of the fables point to her being there.

The ending leads into another book being written. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series! I also think I found a new author to look into their other books!

Grave Digger Academy by C.A. King is a fun YA book that appeals to all readers. This author has become one or those that I will read even without looking at the book description. Her work is always fantastic and I know that whatever book I read is I’ll enjoy it.
This book is no different whatsoever. I was hooked the moment I started reading. I became invested in the characters and just found them so relatable. I could easily imagine everything they got up to and I just found them to be so entertaining.
The story was well written, as expected. It is fairly fast paced but for me that just added to the excitement. When I started this book I didn’t realise it was the first in a series but I an glad it is – I cannot wait to read the next books.

This is another great book by one of my favorite writers. It is the beginning of a series and I’m already waiting to get my hands on the next book because I didn’t want to put this one down. It’s reminiscent of the Harry Potter and the Simon Fayter book series of which I am huge fans of. This is filled with a lot of twists and turns and as the character is learning to come to terms with her talents as well as unknown family secrets. The main character reminds me a lot of Hermione Granger with her wits and talents so of course that was great to see. There aren’t that many female heroines in most of these young adult fantasy books. And unlike Hogwarts this academy isn’t the most sought-after school. But it turns out to be perfectly imperfect for the characters. I can’t wait to read the next installment of this wonderfully written book.

This is an engrossing read. Makayla, much to her chagrin, is accepted into the Gravediggers Academy as a witch. As she starts schooling, and learns about potions, magic, and stopping the dead from rising, I was reminded of Harry and Ron’s first days at Hogwarts. There is much to see and learn, and Makayla seems to be an unnaturally talented witch, despite her lackluster academic past. Lots of action in this story, and I was so involved in it that it was over before I knew it. Definitely looking forward to another book in this series to see how everything plays out for Makayla and her pals.

Grave Digger Academy by C.A. King- Reviewed by Erin Clemence

“Grave Digger Academy” by C.A King is a little bit “Divergent” mixed with a little bit of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, all stirred with a creepy paranormal spoon!

Makayla hopes to be chosen for the school of her choice, like the rest of her six brothers who also attend one of the schools in the paranormal school system. However, Makayla worries that she will be selected for “The Grave Digger Academy”- every students’ last choice, the school for those not accepted anywhere else. At “Grave Digger Academy” they perform spells and potions intended to keep the dead…..well, dead. So when, of course, Makayla is selected for Grave Digger Academy she must face her entire first year alone, with the disappointment of her family heavy on her heart. But Makayla knows she must make the best of it, and when she comes into her powers and realizes that her family has deep secrets that go back generations, she realizes that Grave Digger Academy may be exactly where she was intended to be.

C.A King is an award-winning Canadian author, living in a town that is not too far from my own actually, which made me even happier to be able to promote and praise “Grave Digger Academy”.

The novel is more of a novella, really, at less than 200 pages, and it has short, page-turning chapters. I easily polished this book off in a day. It is also the first in a series of novels, and if the rest are anything like this one, this series will be an instant YA hit.

Makayla is the ideal protagonist- a socially awkward misfit who struggles to fit in, even within her own family. As she comes into herself and makes friends at Grave Digger Academy, it is immediately evident that she will be the one who changes things and makes a difference. She is the character to root for, right from the first page.

With the backdrop of a depressing, neglected school of magic, and quirky, eccentric teachers, “Grave Digger Academy” sets the stage for dark and magical things. The characters were well developed, the plot was poised and had great flow, and the short chapters made the novel a page-turning, addicting experience. I can definitely see King’s “Grave Digger Academy” series becoming the next big YA trend.

An original YA fantasy book. I enjoyed the characters and the twist on magic and witches. There was a fair bit if foundation set in this first book of a series but it is executed well. Mikayla is easily relatable and her back story running parallel with witch folklore was intriguing. Like many academy books this takes place in an academic year. It can be enjoyed by all ages as it is clean and easy to read. Not a cliffhanger as such but I will be checking out book 2.

I was excited to get my hands on Grave Digger Academy by C.A. King. It is a YA paranormal fantasy, that gives us a light hearted look at young Witches at the Grave Digger Academy and one in particular who has newly learned of her abilities and doesn’t want to be there. This book had a Harry Potteresque feel to it, I mean who doesn’t love Potter? and it is a fun read. This adventurous tale flows nicely and is excitingly intriguing. With great world-building, and delightful characters CA has set the scene with multiple layers to be explored and revealed and a plot going forward that looks exciting and promising. It is an Academy that is full of secrets and things that are hidden within the grounds and in the dark. It is a great start to this series.

This is an author I have enjoyed from the first book I picked up from her and I never hesitate to pick up her books. They are well written, fun, entertaining stories that pull me in from the first page. This book is no different. This is a paranormal story that I couldn’t put down until the end. This is a story about Makayla and her last chance to go to an academy. The first couple turned her down but the one that gives her the opportunity she doesn’t want to go to. The curriculum at this place is as it says, gravediggers are just that they dig graves. The problem is that the dead don’t stay buried and they refuse to cooperate. This is an action filled story that I just loved reading. The characters are entertaining and made the story fun and thrilling to read. I highly recommend this book and this author.

About C.A. King

I was diagnosed with clinical depression after the loss of my mother, father and husband within three years of each other; all to cancer. 24/7 in-home care, coupled with the loss I felt, left its mark on my psyche.

Depression takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real time.

To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn’t open mail, talk on the phone, or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall. There didn’t need to be a reason or trigger.

People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world into which other people with similar problems could escape. I wanted to share the one place that had helped me for many years.

I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don’t ever let anyone tell you different.

I read books as well as write them and have visited the worlds many different authors have created. Those worlds not only make me feel better, but give me the strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes—I want them to know they are making a difference.

Fast forward to today…

I usually avoid reading horror/suspense, but I’m so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone for Evil Sushi. Not only is it a creative story full of mystery, suspense and the paranormal, but it’s also an interesting way of socially commenting on the state of the world and marine life conservation. The story is definitely weird, but well written and engaging. I recommend this for anyone who’s looking for something different and thought provoking to read.

This book is hard to describe, but it is full of action, adventure, real life issues, horror, sci-fi and mysterious suspense. Evil Sushi by C.A. King is a story of paranormal suspense. It is an amazing thriller that I loved to read. I loved the original story that this came to be.

They aren’t zombies, by the way. They aren’t the undead in any way. They’re not like the rest. Just when you felt it was safe to go back for seconds, something unexpected happens. Evil Sushi flips the script, reintroducing beef to the menu. Two down-on-their-luck East Coast fishermen make a once-in-a-lifetime discovery that could end world hunger for good. They find themselves hurriedly embarking on a mission to change the lives of people all over the world. There’s no denying that their discovery has an impact, but not in the way they had hoped. Is Evil Sushi a fictional book, the ravings of a maniac, or a prophecy that’s the true question?

I loved every page of it and was definitely not ready for the book to end. It brought me into their world and I enjoyed every second of it. I can’t wait to read book number two.

Evil Sushi (Evil Sushi #1) by C.A. King

This isn’t the first book I’ve read by King. She knows how to bring readers back to her books. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Rod is a fisherman and when he and a friend hit gold things start looking up. Sort of. He can see him falling for his friend’s daughter, but he doesn’t have anything to offer. The quote I chose for Rod is: “You’re in early, Ned. Did you have any luck out there?”

Sally has been taking care of her father since her mother passed away. She has her eye on Rod, but doesn’t think he feels the same. When her father and Rod bring in something that changes everything. The quote I chose for Sally is: “You’re the exception, I tell you. You want some water? Or I can make some lemonade, if you’d like.”

Highly recommended for Paranormal Horror lovers.

C. A. King’s Evil Sushi does what it says on the tin. There’s sushi. It’s evil. I would probably not recommend eating sushi while you read this book. Unless it’s vegetarian sushi – you’re probably safe there.
It’s 2021, so if you’re avoiding pandemic-related horror this is not the story for you. But if you enjoy speculating about how much worse things could’ve been, knowing easily something dangerous could spread and how hard it would be for authorities to stop it in its tracks, this makes for an entertaining read.
There are some great characters, as I’ve come to expect from King’s books. The story centres around two fishermen – Rod and Ned. Both very down-to-earth, practical men, they are both motivated by their love for Ned’s daughter Sally, who Ned hopes his younger friend will one day pluck up the courage to confess his feelings to. They struggle to make a living in a poorly regulated world where big corporations can easily take what they want, leaving little for anyone else.
This is a really entertaining book which left me wanting more (and, fortunately, the sequel is already out!). It gets five stars from me! I would recommend it to fans of quirky horror – if the evil bunny rabbit in Holy Grail is your idea of peak humour you’ll love this!

And I’m thoroughly glad that I did. I will say I am a huge horror fan, and this is full of that. Evil Sushi (Evil Sushi #1)Evil Sushi by C.A. King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Two fishermen are down on their luck, as are most of the others with the same livelihood all over the world since people started to blame the meat industry for global warming and which led to a huge increase in demand for fish and the opening of the international fishing routes, since then, the seas have been overfished and not replenished, even the vegetation on the sea bed is dead and people are fighting over any meat they can get a hold of. Rod and Ned live in the town of Treacle, it is a typical small community which centres around the fishing industry and traditions passed down through the generations which has kept it alive, albeit now the boats are all in need of repair but are having to wait until finances allow.

One day, Rod and Ned decide to go out and see if there is anything left after the big corporation’s boats scoured the area and used charges to get as much out of the sea as physically possible, but when they go out and use one of Rod’s homemade gadgets to see the state of play under the water, they find something unexpected, something which could well change their fortunes, so they decide to take a sample back with them to take a closer look. What they discover when they get home is nothing short of breathtaking and when someone accidentally tries to remedy a mistake, the consequences are miraculous, while Rod cautiously decides to do some research, Ned tries something a bit more drastic and when he says that they have tried it and nothing bad has come of it, they decide to try and sell it.

Early the next morning, they go to market to sell their find, but anger the locals when they accidentally start an auction and when Ned hears the amount of money offered by a businessman who doesn’t belong, he takes it upon himself to accept before Rod can do anything about it. This business man then asks for a repeat order a few days later and thinking that this is the end of it and that their luck maybe turning round, they try and pack up while avoiding the rest of the shoppers, it is only when a few days later and the mysterious businessman hires someone to take the rest of the stock by force and pay them for the privilege of staying silent, that they begin to think that they made a mistake.

Rod and Ned try to forget about the whole thing and get on with their lives until strange things start happening in Treacle and that feeling of unease is reinforced by hearing news reports of other strange events. Will Rod and Ned come clean about what they found and try to defend the reasoning behind it, or will the whole thing backfire and end up affecting the world in the opposite way they hoped? This is a horror story which makes you think about whether something similar could actually come to pass while keeping you hooked until the end.

I quite liked this book! While it began with a slow burn, I definitely enjoyed the story, especially once it started picking up steam. It also questions some aspects of environmental policy in the beginning, as well as addresses the cold, hard truth that we have not fixed things just yet. Even though this is a work of fiction, it is nice to see a wake-up call thrown in.
