Oliver A Story About Adoption by Lois Wickstrom, Review by Torey Foster

Oliver: A Story about AdoptionOliver: A Story about Adoption by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oliver is the story of a young boy who was adopted. After getting in trouble, he is angry at his parents which leads him to wonder about his birth parents and why they did’t keep him. He thinks about his life and what it could have been like had he not been adopted.
I think this is a wonderful story that helps validate feelings and work through emotions that kids might have in this situation. I have two children that are not mine biologically and I am glad to have a book to read to them that they can relate to and that might help them work through some of these feelings. My 7 year old is already starting to question why she doesn’t just have a normal family and is starting to feel a sense of rejection from her bio mom. It is important to validate those feelings while also making sure they know they are loved and help them work through it. This book is a great resource to help us do just that. While adopted children are the target audience, I think this book is beneficial for everyone, just to help us understand each other better, and help us be more empathetic to people in different situations. I definitely recommend this book.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book! The author did an excellent job portraying all the characters and finding just the right hook for the readers. Its almost the perfect read for teens as well. Serious issues are discussed in a way that isn’t too heavy, there’s a tad bit of drama and there’s some paranormal to make sure the story doesn’t get too serious! I look forward to reading more from this author!

What a cute story! It combines real life problems with some paranormal. Lauren’s character is troubled, thoughtful, and seems older than she is. Grace is a very lively spirit! She wants to help Lauren so bad. You dont have to be a fan of ballet to enjoy this book.

A sweet story about Jake, a happy-go-lucky dog who happens to growl all the time. He’s not mad or aggressive. It’s just how he is. This first book in the “Jake the Growling Dog” series teaches kindness, love, and understanding. It includes some thoughtful kindness sharing exercises at the end to help children spread love and care toward others. This has become one of my favorite childrens book series!

This book is a great way to teach kids about inclusion, by using a cute dog they can connect to, to understand that just because something is different doesn’t mean you have to be afraid of it. It also shows kids the effects it can have on someone when you treat them differently just because they are different than you or your normal friends group. My grade school aged girls loved the animals in this book, and related to the story, as they have both felt the way that Jake feels in this book.

Lois Wickstrom did an excellent job with this children’s book. The illustrations and graphics are what I believe would catch many children’s attention. They are aesthetically pleasing. There is depth in the cartoons. The Know It All Pencil is a sweet story about a boy named Caspian who receives a present on his “UnBirthday”. This writer viewed the pencil as silly, and thinks children would really enjoy how the pencil worked by itself. The story also comes together at the end and brings everything full circle.

This book was exactly what my kindergarten-age son needed. He has been struggling with fears and worries lately, and this book helps address these things beautifully. I really appreciated the notes at the end of the book for parents, as I was at a bit of a loss at how to help him handle these big feelings. I also appreciated the subtle representation for kids with disabilities – the character Tuck opened up a discussion with my son and allowed him to ask questions without the risk of being insensitive to a real person. We talked about why someone might be missing a limb, that it can happen to anybody, and that they can still play and do everything that he and I can, they just might have to do things a little differently and that’s okay. I thought the pictures were very cute and that the writing did a beautiful job of being descriptive while remaining simple enough that my son could read most of it, as well as being enjoyable and engaging with its easy flow and rhyming scheme. Plus, my son loves animal books, so it was able to keep his interest! We will definitely be looking at the other “Jake the Growling Dog” books after reading this one!

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His TrailJake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail by Samantha Shannon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jake the Growling Dog is back in another adventure where he is enjoying life and part of that is walking on the trail he loves to go down everyday, it helps him to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of life in the woods near where he lives. He likes to see what new sights and sounds are around, especially when his best friend Neet is with him, but one day he is walking down his trail when something doesn’t look or smell right and it makes them worry that it is something he might not want to share his trail with.

As Jake and Neet try to figure out what has made the strange tracks on the ground and whether whatever made the tracks is dangerous, their legs start to shake and their minds go spinning until they hear something start to pass by and they get scared and so they go and hide. When they are safe and alone they come out and go home, but the experience has made Jake’s head hurt and when he tried to get to sleep, he had bad dreams, but when his friends Bodhi and Luna come to visit, Jake tells them what happened and how he might not want to share his trail and how it is making him feel when he thinks about it.

Will Bodhi, Luna, Jake and Neet be able to work together to figure out the mystery of the new tracks and smell on the trail, or will their fears get the better of them? This is a beautifully written story about sharing, facing fears and not being afraid of something new and different which can be enjoyed by adults and children alike with some excellent activities at the end around the themes contained in the story.

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail (Jake the Growling Dog Book 3) by Samantha Shannon has once again stolen my heart. Much like the first two books, book number three touches on so many good lessons for young children to learn, and shares them in a way that will resonate with anyone. When Jake fears to encounter anything new on the hiking trail that he built, he must learn that difference isn’t always bad. This book teaches children the importance of sharing and including others. This is a wonderful book series to give and share with your children, no matter how old they are. Furthermore, the author is a licensed counselor, and her background in education only adds to the credibility of this series. My daughter is one and truly enjoys looking at the colorful pictures and hearing about Jake and his friends. 5 out of 5 stars for Jake!

Jake loves taking walks down his favorite trail but one day while out for a walk with his friend Neet, they stumble onto something different that scares them. Jake and his friend Neet are worried about the discovery and find it hard to sleep. Jake’s friends Bodhi and Luna come over to play and decide to help their friend, so he does not have to worry alone. The friends set out for an adventure together to figure out what this strange discovery was that Jake discovered on his favorite trail.

Samantha Shannon describes through her characters the power of friendship and how we are never truly alone if we have friends by our side. Through Jake and his friends, she says that being different is okay and that everyone gets scared sometimes but that is okay too. I love these stories so much! I read this one to my little boy and even though he is only 2 he loved looking at the pictures and shouting dog every time he saw Jake! The storyline for this book was great and for older children there are so many times you can stop and discuss what is going on. Its definitely a wonderful way to get children thinking and especially at times when children face new things in their lives for example starting school and worrying about new friendships.
I love these books and hope that there will be another Jake adventure to read about soon!

I have fallen in love with this whole set of Jake’s books. I have a few grandchildren that will have this set sitting in their rooms.

The message conveyed in this book is so completely relevant especially in the world today and the conversation guide at the end was spot on for helping the adults lead the discussion after reading it with the kids. I love this and really believe these should be part of a school’s reading curriculum or at the very least part of reading time at home.

The illustrations were amazing and I believe will make storytime that much more fun and meaningful. The importance of friendship was also very strong in this story and was written in a way that young children will completely understand.

I loved this and I love that this author has gone that extra mile for our kids!

This is the series I loved from the very beginning and even have had my boys read all the books. The graphics is amazing and the message given is very cute and clear. In this book, Jake and Neet, his best friend, find some strange tracks on their regular hiking trail. Jake gets frightened and lets his imagination go wild. He loses his sleep over the strange tracks. But along with few other friends, brave as they are, they decide to investigate. They find who the culprit is and figure out that what they thought was not what it is. A sweet story of inclusion and acceptance, this book is a jewel in the series. Highly recommended.

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail by Samantha Shannon was wonderful! I personally don’t have kids, but I babysit a lot and have friends with kids so we try to keep books in the house for when they stop by or spend the night. The illustrations were perfect to keep the attention of kids, the message was heart- warming and kind, and the words weren’t the pee-wee words in some kids books.

Samantha uses words like mayhem and churning, which is one of the things I absolutely look for in books for kids! But she also tackles disability in an accepting way. But this book 100% rates 15 out of 5 because of the breakdown they give at the end! She walks us through steps to help lessen while still accepting our fears. Great book! Especially for new parents!!

I read this story with my oldest, who is 4 years old. Although it seems like it would be better for older kids, I still think the lesson resonated with my 4 year old as well! It was a great learning tool, especially with the activities at the end. It brought a simple yet serious conversation (as serious as one can get with a younger kiddo) that might not have happened as organically had I not picked up this book to read with him! Already looking forward to reading some of the other Jake The Growling Dog books!

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail is the 3rd book in the Jake the Growling Dog children’s book series by Samantha Shannon.
This book was absolutely adorable! My daughter and I had a cuddle together and read this story and she loved it! The pictures are beautiful, and the story was very touching and had a great way of helping kids to understand about disabilities and that we really are all the same no matter what we look like.
Jake has a trail that he walks each day. On this trail, he meets friends, but one day when he and a friend see new prints on the trail, they become scared of what might be on the trail and if it might be able to hurt them.
Samantha Shannon has done a great job of having Jake and his friend use their imagination to think of what the prints may be from. When Jake later meets what the prints are from, he realizes that he had simply never encountered someone like this before and that they were friendly and just like him on the inside but a little different on the outside and that was ok!
As an early childhood educator, I really think this book would do fantastic in schools and daycares, especially in kindergarten and grade 1 classes and I will be mentioning it, and this series of books, to my many teacher and ECE friends for the upcoming school year!

If you have little ones in your life, I highly recommend this book, and series, for their book collection!
My daughter and I cannot wait to find out what Jake’s next adventure is all about!

I tried reading it to my infant daughter but she was more interested in our puppy than she was the fictional one. I thought this book was cute, sweet, engaging and so fun for children. I really love the extra stuff at the end, the activities for parent to do with their children and the guides for fear and worries in children. Jake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail is an adorable children’s tale by Samantha Shannon.

One of the greatest things about the Jake the Growling Dog series, is that it always has some sort of lesson to be learned in the story. This particular tale teaches us that it’s ok for people to be different. When the Jake finds prints that are different than his, he is fearful. When the prints turn out to be another dog with a disability, Jake feels silly.

All of the Jake the Growling Dog books also include questions and activities at the end. This is a great, light hearted read about series issues a kid can face in school, day care, or just in general when out with mom and dad. I think these stories really open up the door for conversations about real life obstacles and feelings.

I really enjoyed the little activities and information that was in the book about children being scared and what to do, as an early learning childhood educator this really made the book even better. Learning these things with your child is something that can help then with everything in life. An all-around great children’s book.
