Past Storm and Fire by Christy Nicholas was an original, engaging detail read, that had me hooked.
Not my first read by this author, so I new going in that this book was going to be something otherworldly and fantastical. And I was not disappointed. This book was hooking right from the start. Opening with that storm, it not only set the stage for the mood, but it showed us right away the cracks in Val’s and Karl’s marriage. It was a heavy hitter from there, and once that fantasy plot got underway, there was no turning back for me. I loved the play on fact or fiction, and the way the author had Val escape into her writing. It was a unique twist and it made this story stand out.
Overall this book gets my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval.

When a man can’t cope, get you a woman who can. Orlaugh has been a faithful Seer to her cousin, the chief, for almost 50 years but for some reason he doesn’t hold too much stock in the Visions. A new bishop sees Orlaugh as a threat to himself and Christianity, and wants her dead on principle. Bishop Malachi insults her and outright says to kill her within seconds of meeting her. This dude got my blood boiling and I wanted to smack him. Orlaugh, however, knows what storm is coming and will not let men’s dismissal stop her from trying to prevent to war and bloodshed she fears is imminent. I love Orlaugh so much. She’s witty, wise, and doesn’t give a good gosh darn. I want to be her when I’m old. This whole series is fantastic and I recommend them to anyone who likes historical fiction.

This is my favorite in the series yet. This book is creative, well written, engaging and pulled me in from the first page. The characters bring the story to life and kept me turning pages. I enjoyed watching them grow throughout the story. Orlagh takes you on a journey or quest of finding an heir for her magic brooch. It has magic, page turning action and you have to find out if she succeeds but it is worth the read. I highly recommend this book.

Past Storm and Fire is yet another exciting and well written story by Christy Nicholas. Just love the cover of this book. I found this book to be a nice quick read, the book also flowed nicely, and the story has a nice pace to it as well. If Christy, you are a fan then this book is going to grab your attention from the start as I did with me. If you are now just finding Christy after reading this book you will want to read more of her wonderful work. You will find Past Storm and Fire has such detail to it you wont want to put the book down, and since this book has a lot of detail it will have you feeling you are on the same journey with Val and the characters of the book. Definitely a five-star read.

Past Storm and Fire is a story by Christy Nicholas and I am sure that it will great like her other stories. I was not disappointed. Nicholas writes in a way that grips you in a way like you are in a spider web and do not even realize it. The way she can start the story with Hurricane Andrew and take you back to historic Iceland is mind blowing. Val is the main female character and she is living with Karl, her husband but is she truly happy. She has visions that take her to Iceland. There is another story that is brought to her in visions. As the story grows so does the love I have for Val and Vigdis. Who is Vigdis and what is his role? You will have to read this story and fall in love yourself.

Past Storm and Fire was a fantastic and exciting 5 star read by Christy Nicholas and I story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The level of detail that the author put into the story was just amazing; I was completely captivated by what I was reading. I could tell that the author really had taken the time to research what she writing about and this made a he difference to me as a reader. I have read quite a few books by this author now and I have to say I think that this one is definitely my favourite so far, it was just one of those stories that you find really difficult to put down. I loved the main character Val, she was such a strong person and I really felt like I was living her journey with her. A fantastic 5 star read that I highly recommend!

Another fantastic book from Nicholas! She is a master storyteller and few can match her ability to create new worlds that leave you breathless with their newness yet they are still relatable. I loved this book from start to finish and found myself transported once again to the world created. Fantastic book.

This is once again a great read. I have read other books by this author and I was not let down. I found that she has a unique way of bringing her characters to life and drawing the reader in. I really found this book to be refreshing.
I love the way that the main character Val is both a part of the present world and the past. I really got into how the past life she experienced comes to her as a book idea. I love how she is drawn to the past through her work in the future. The way that the book draws the reader in just had me glued to the pages. I really enjoyed how she gets to tie all the characters in her book to the past and gets a new beginning for her in the present. I really liked the chemistry between her and Havaldr. I definitely will be reading more from this author in the future.

The story Past Storm and Fire by Christy Nicholas is a wonderful book to read. It drew me in from the very beginning and I found myself not wanting to put it down until I had finished the last page. I loved reading about the character of Val. She is a woman who is responsible. Her life is not going the way that she had hoped and is inspired to writing a romance novel set in Iceland. The novel opens up a world which she can escape to. What will happen when the lines between her writing and her real life begin to cross? What does the future hold for Val? Read this book to find out. I also loved reading about the character of Vigdis that Val creates. She is a hard-worker, independent, and strong. I liked that so much detail is given to the story. I felt like I was right there with the characters. This is also a book that is emotional and mine went up and down. I grew to care about Val and Vigdis with each chapter that I read. Don’t miss out on a journey that had me thinking about it even after I had finished the book. Recommended reading.

I found this book enjoyable and hard to put down as it also made me feel as if I was part of the story. It is well written and the author’s attention to detail especially the historical parts are great. Val’s life seems to be falling apart between the damage from the hurricane to her husband’s deceit. Inspired, she finds herself writing a novel based in Iceland. What will happen when her present and past collide? Strong characters that are connectable. I highly recommend this book

Misfortune of Song (The Druid’s Brooch series, Book 5) 4 out of 5 stars
The Druid’s Brooch series does not fall under the category of genres I read very often but with books so well written, I’ve gladly made an exception. Misfortune of Song is the fifth book in the series by Christy Nicholas but it can easily be read by itself; in fact I’ve been reading this series out of order. Once again Christy Nicholas has captured me with her storytelling, in depth characters and fantastic imagery. The storyline had a bit of everything to keep me engaged and my emotions on edge. I believe in my last review I stated that the book I had just read was my favorite in the series, I’d have to go back on my word and say Misfortune of Song has stolen that spot. Let this be an example of the kind of series this is, once you think you couldn’t love the books anymore, you read the next installment. Misfortune of Song has introduced me to a whole new world and much welcomed break from reality, if only for a short period. I will be recommending this author/series to anyone I know that’s looking for a fantastic read all around.

Misfortune of Song by Christy Nicholas Druid’s Brooch Series #5 My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This book is an excellent addition to the Druid’s Brooch Series. The story was easy to get into and the characters were written nicely. This could be read as a stand alone but the other books in the series are just as great and I would highly recommend them.
Almost all of the characters in this book got on my nerves or did things that made me hate them. In saying that, it really made the book all that much more interesting for me. I wanted to read on to see how each person would react to the different situations they were thrown into.
Orlagh is a fool, chasing after a love that wasn’t even there in the beginning just because of one kiss. Temuirr is a promiscuous man that can’t hold a solid relationship which, leads to his sister Yana always exasperated by the situations he gets himself into. Orlagh finds out that her grandfa is arranging a marriage for her with a man from their village, she denounces her grandfa’s care to live on her own and follow her love for Temuirr. Temuirr is surprised and taken aback, he realizes he is in too deep with this woman and may have to court her for real.
Eolande is Orlagh’s best friend, and my favorite character. She always has Orlagh’s back and is a fae that was cast out of her world because she fell in love with a mortal. She follows Oralgh in her quest to track down Temuirr to watch over her and keep her safe. Maelan, Orlagh’s grandfa and Eogan, Maelan’s best friend, go out on a search to find Orlagh and bring her home as well as to her senses regarding the traveling bard, Temuirr. Maelan makes many very terrible decisions regarding his granddaughter in the form of kidnapping her and ruining her relationship with not only Temuirr but him as well.
I don’t want to give away too much more information, but there is some stuff that goes down towards the end and really makes for a nice ending to the book. I did enjoy this book and can’t wait to look into more books from this series.

So even though I have read this series completely out of order I have totally enjoyed every story and this one was no different. Although I do wish I had read them all in order I do have that on my to do list for the future. This as I’ve mentioned in earlier reviews is not a chosen genre of mine but I can’t deny the writing in this story, it flowed so perfectly and kept my attention throughout the majority of the book.
I loved the character portrayal in this story from Orlagh dealing with real teenage behaviors and Maelan struggling with trying to save her from herself and also trying to follow through on an obligation. The story progressed and had me on the edge of my seat through most of it. It had many different aspects filled with danger and suspense.
I love Ireland and want to visit someday, and even though this was set in the past the descriptions of it just strengthened these hopes I have of seeing it someday.
If you love reading fantasies set back in history you will absolutely love these books.

Taking another trip into the realm of the fae and 12th century Ireland and the drama that unfolds. As before I have been reading this series out of order but it hasn’t caused any difficulty in keeping up or understanding. The author has a unique style that has you feeling that you are right there in the midst of the story alongside the characters.
The author is able to bring in twists to the story along with the drama. As Orlagh rebels against her grandfather I could really relate to her character. The way the author had it that Maelan has to bargain with the Fae really brought a new dimension to the story. The Fae once again bring a unique twist to the story. This book was very hard to put down. I was eager to see how the drama would unfold around Orlagh as a descendant of the brooch. I really like the magical twist to these books. I really cannot wait to read more from this author and the series.

Misfortune of Song (Druid’s Brooch #5) by Christy Nicholas 4 out of 5 Stars The attention to detail in this book is astounding. This is the fifth book in the Druid’s Brooch Series. Each book can be read as a standalone but, as a reader, I highly recommend reading a book in series order to get the most out the series. Each book focuses on a new set of characters and their journey with the Brooch. In this book we meet Maelan and his granddaughter Orlagh, in 12th Centruy Ireland. Maelan has found himself in a predicament. He is determined to protect his granddaughter, fulfill his obligation to his Chief and try to maintain and protect his family name. When Orlagh goes off on her own, Maelan goes after her to save her from herself…but does she really need saving? Having to choose between his Clan and his last living family member, Maelan goes on the journey of a lifetime.
Between magic, Fae, and Maelan determined to go to the ends of the world to save his granddaughter, this book is nonstop action. I loved every last page of it and I have loved each book in the series. Highly Recommended!

Misfortune of Song (Druid’s Brooch #5) by Christy Nicholas was an heart pounding, entertaining, engaging read, that had me hooked.
Yes I know, I’m not exactly reading this series in order, but they can be read as standalones, and the timeline isn’t consistent, so I don’t feel like I’m missing anything, if anything I’m enjoying that much more. But if you are a stickler, then I do suggest reading them in order.
Each book that I read in this series, has more magic, more drama, and just more insight into the fae world. This read has a mix of romance, of one that isn’t all happiness and sunshine. There are real emotions and problems, as well as magical drama (more so on that evil side) and an unsupportive family. It makes this otherworldly read, connecting and realistic.
This book covers so much, makes you feel so much, and frankly I can’t pick a favourite in the series. Well written and easy to read, these book takes you on a fantastical ride that just captures you mind and soul. Not to spoil anything, I’m going to leave you with my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval, for this must read.

This book is full of magic, love, danger, action, and adventure. This book can be read as a standalone but I’m sure as soon as you read it you will want to dive right into the other books in this series. In this story we read about Maelan and his granddaughter Orlagh. Maelan just wants to protect Orlagh and get her to make the choices that he feels is best for her. Orlagh is a bit spirited and some of the choices she makes has great consequences which leaves Maelan having to make some difficult decisions in order to keep her safe. Will he succeed? This is a must read if you want to find out what happens in this wonderfully told story. The author does an exceptional job making this story come to life with her rich details and the way she weaves the story draws you in and keeps you entertained and turning pages to find out what’s going to happen next. I highly recommend this great story.

A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns that j just couldn’t put down. Well developed characters like Orlagh standing up for herself but also vulnerable underneath or Maelan struggled between love and duty as a devoted grandfather. Great cast of supporting characters like the funny Eogan or the wise and sweet Eolande or the mother figure of Yana. I loved the visual detail throughout the book like in the sense of nature like the sunrise in the dew by the stones for a sense of magic and wonder that takes your breath away. Or the little purple and blue flowers bright and bold and vibrant against the dark greens of the forest beautifully written. And also in the bright colours of the dresses of Yana and Temuirr with the spring and autumn reds and blues and oranges bright and beautiful. The switch of narratives between Maelan and Orlagh worked well to display both sides of events and was easy to follow. I loved the use of the Irish names and places and pronounciations was a lovely touch and added to the feel of the ancient world. This combined with the use of myths and stories made for a captivating read. Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.

This has been a awesome addition to the series’s which I’ve really enjoyed so far. I’m not usually into this genre history/fantasy but I’m glad i change it up at times as this is a fantastic read it will keep you on your toes and eager to read more. This can be read as a standalone but i highly recommend reading the other’s first. It most definitely toyed with my emotions one minute I’m smiling and laughing out loud the next i have tears in my eyes and reaching for the tissues!!

Misfortune of Song: Druid’s Brooch Series: #5 by Christy Nicholas is a blend of fantasy history and Celtic mythology and is another great addition to the series. It is a story that will have your emotions all over the place and will have you laughing and crying. This book can be read as a standalone, as most of them can, but I would read them in order.
Maelan is a man of honour and code, but sometimes his granddaughter, Orlagh could drive him to drink. How far would he go to protect the one thing he loves in his life?
Orlagh is stubborn and bullheaded and often rebels against her grandfather. She wants what she wants and what she wants is the young man she has fallen in love with, be damned the consequences.
This is a world where there is magic and Fae and is wonderfully written to make it a magical read.

Although this can be read as a standalone I will recommend reading the whole series .This is about Conall And Lainn,they are brother and sister. Conall promised there father he would take care of her.He’s very protective of Lainn.Find out what happens and where their lives take them.i can’t wait to read more from this Author.

Age of Saints is the 7th book in the standalone Druid’s Brooch series by Christy Nicholas. The author continues to impress me with the depth of her storytelling and the vivid imagery she paints. This is a fantastic fantasy series I’ve found myself lost in, with characters that are deep and relatable. I have enjoyed every book I’ve read in the series thus far, but there was something about Age of Saints that I loved to the point where I would venture to say it’s my favorite! If you’re looking for a great book series that transports you to another place and time then I honestly can’t recommend the Druid’s Brooch Series or Age of Saints enough.

Misfortune of Song by Christy Nicholas is the fifth book in the Druid’s Brooch Series. This book can be read as a standalone and understood completely and enjoyed. This book is set in 12th century Ireland. Maelan is the head of his family and must look after them and assure that they make the best decisions. His granddaughter Orlagh is determined to not follow him and makes his life chaos. Can he keep everything together and protect his granddaughter? This is my second read in this series and I am hooked. I enjoy both genres of historical and fantasy and this incorporates both well. The characters are well written and challenged in their lives. I can not help but get emotional at some of the things the author puts them through. I like the story and how it intertwines with the other books but is not essential to have the other stories to enjoy the individual book. I look forward to reading more in this series.

This story gives us Conall’s and Lainn’s story. These two are siblings and care very much for one another. I enjoyed their relationship with each other. Conall is the holder of the brooch, and he tries to protect his sister the best he can. This leads to several obstacles and conflict for our characters. Conall and Lainn deserve peace! This sibling duo has been through the ringer and most of it not their fault. Conall promised his father he would protect his baby sister with all that he is and what big brother wouldn’t? BUT there isn’t a whole lot you can do with an absolute expletive of an abusive step father and powerful fae out to get you basically just because. I feel for Conall so much. He loves his sister and wants the best for her. Every decision he makes goes from bad to how could this possibly get any worse…. oh that’s how it could get worse. The only thing I didn’t like in this book was that the ending seemed kind of blah. It wasn’t exactly a cliffhanger but I’m hoping there will be more about these two in the next book. Can’t wait!

Misfortune of Song is the fifth book in the Druid’s Brooch Series by Christy Nicholas. This is a historical fantasy- with action, adventure, magic, paranormal elements, drama, romance, mystery, humour, young love, challenges, heartbreak, betrayal, danger, battles, bargains, and fantastic world building. I have said it before, and I say it again, I really love the attention to detail and vividly descriptive storytelling that Ms. Nicholas excels at- it brings her stories to life and makes them very realistic, believable, and entirely immersive. As with the other books in this series that I have read, this is really well written, intriguing, and engaging. The story pulled me in and kept my attention right from the beginning. The character/s are complex, fully realised individuals who were cleverly crafted- with interesting and quirky natures. I haven’t read the books in this series in sequence- instead picking books by random- thankfully each book is able to be read as a standalone. Having said that though, if you love a great fantasy with lots of historical elements, then you would most definitely enjoy the other books in this series as well- and after reading one, you will probably want to explore more/all. In this book we meet Maelan and his granddaughter Orlagh, who live in Ireland in the 12th century. Maelan is determined to protect his granddaughter, even from herself, as well as fulfil his duty to chief, and uphold the family name. Orlagh is a little headstrong and impulsive, and tests all the boundaries he tries to impose. But choices are made, and the consequences are quite disastrous. Maelan must decide what he is prepared to do in order to save her? Can he succeed? What happens? You really should read the story and discover all the intriguing details for yourself- it’s well worth your time!
