I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Though I have never heard of this author, Tey, I may have to check them out. Part of what makes these stories so good is the book club. Somehow, they found another murder amongst them again. Lexie is determined to solve it again. This author is one of those that I can’t put down. Her mysteries are engaging and grab your attention. I love reading about this club. They have the nuttiest interactions and you know they have secrets. I can’t wait to see what’s coming next.

This is the first book in the Creatures Of The Midwest Series. I honestly can’t speak highly of this book. As I lover of paranormal and crime stories this books compromise both and gives a story that does not let you go. It is full of twists and turns and surprises that you don’t see coming. In this story we follow Hazel Goode. Hazel is a witch and when she receives a anonymous letter about her sister being in danger she finds herself travelling to Shallow Hollow to discover what actually happened to her sister. Shallow Hollow is supposed to be a magical beings safe haven however as soon as she arrives she realises that isn’t the case. Everywhere she turns is corruption and lies. Now she is in a town she doesn’t know with no one to help her and no one she can trust until she meets Corwin
Corwin is the last remaining vampire. He is reluctantly to disclose this to Hazel as vampires are supposed to be extinct. However he needs her help to uncover and solve the mystery. The same mystery that Hazel is trying to solve although her reason is different than Corwins. Working together to finally get to the bottom of Willows disappearance is just the help that Hazel needs, however when Corwin true identity is revealed it opens them up to more danger and putting a huge target on their backs. With a dark and evil force working against them do they stand a chance of uncovering the truth or will they become the next targets? This was a great read and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Wheel of Evil is the third book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series by N.L Holmes. I really enjoy these historical mysteries, which are woven with wonderfully rich historical details, texture, depth, interesting characters, adventure, intrigue, suspense, dramatic developments, emotion, tension, secrets, lies, family dynamics, and danger. This series is a direct spin-off from ‘The Lord Hani Mystery Series’, which I also love– but this time we follow Hani’s daughter, Neferet (and friends), as she gets drawn into some very intriguing mysteries. Neferet (and Co) plunge into another investigation when her uncle gets caught up in a get-rich-scheme where the ‘investors’ begin dying off…. What’s really going on here? With danger mounting, time is running out to get to the bottom of it all before it’s too late. Another intriguing cozy historical mystery, set in ancient Egypt- with plenty of vivid detailing and descriptions which helped to bring everything to life There is a definite ‘crime and investigation’ aspect to the story- and a ‘whodunnit’ mystery that kept me engrossed as I followed along to find out how everything played out in the end. This is the third book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series and somehow it just keeps getting better! I had read quite a few different books by this author before starting this series, but it’s definitely my favorite of theirs. I highly recommend that you read the series in order for the best experience and to eliminate confusion. The flow of the story is well-paced, and everything unfolds naturally. Neferet and Bener-ib are some of my favorite characters I’ve come across! I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but the twists and turns this story takes you on are amazing. If you enjoy cozy historical mysteries, do yourself a favor and pick up this book (and this series)! You won’t be able to put it down until you reach the end. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next!
Wheel of Evil is another fascinating historical cozy mystery set in Ancient Egypt and the third book in Hani’s Daughter Mysteries. From the beginning of the series, we not only get a good story, but also a history lesson. NL’s engaging storytelling vividly brings the story and images of that time to life. What trouble has Uncle Pipi gotten himself into? Who is behind the deaths of the investors? Super sleuth Neferet, Bener-ib, and her friends find themselves in another dangerous mystery. Piecing together the clues takes them deeper into the darker side, where they may just end up dead themselves. I won’t reveal more because you need to discover the events by yourself. What does NL have more in store for us next? If you want more of NL Holmes’s work, take a look at her The Lord Hani Mystery series, where it all began.
This is a series that keeps getting better and better with each book. I highly suggest reading the previous book as well to help your enjoyment of this series and this author. I enjoy this author’s writing style as well as their ability to pull me into the story with ease. This is a well written story that is full of mystery with some suspense. The characters are creative and connectable. I enjoyed how they pulled me into their world and had me turning pages fast. They add so much to the story’s entertainment value. I enjoyed their growth throughout the story which made it easy to read as well. This is a fast paced story and hard to put down. Find out what happens with this group of teenagers. I highly recommend this book and this author.
The Monkey Island Murder is Book 3 in the Sparky of Bunker Hill Mystery series. It is a cozy historical mystery set in the early 1930’s and centers around a rambunctious, street smart, young 11-year-old girl named Sparky. She loves to solve mysteries and on her newest adventure she finds herself caught in the middle of a mystery that involves her “boss” Bookie. He has been implicated in a murder and Sparky must really put her detective skills to work to solve this case. The ensuing adventure is full of mayhem, mystery, intrigue, witty banter, and quirky characters. The author does a fantastic job of pulling the reader into the 1930’s through her vivid descriptions and attention to detail to that period.

Neferet, a young woman in a masculine led world fearlessly embarks on an investigation into the death of a man who conducted business with her uncle and a group of unsavory men. She had previously proven her propensity to successfully embark and resolve investigations like this one. However, should her case ruffle the feathers of the unsavory world rumbling barely visible to the bare eye of society, her and/or her family could fall victim to the perpetrators.
Initially her father expressed concern that she may try to look into the matter but quickly assessed that he cannot control a strong minded, independent young woman.
Neferet’s character is one that will resonate with readers who were ever underestimated, ignored, etc due to age, sex, and/or beauty.
I loved her dog Brute, a large mastiff due to my love of the breed and understanding of their beautiful personalities and intense protectiveness.
I also enjoyed how Neferet’s family appeared rather close and they all depended upon one another. She had the support of her husband, Ptah-mes, as well as Maya, Hani, Mom, Pop, Meyer-ra, Pa-kiki to name a few. How could I forget uncle Pipi who as usual landed himself in a very precarious situation that the family was unfortunately quite used to.
The deeper they dive into the problem, the sketchier things appear. While they try to get to the bottom of things, they need to be extremely careful and cautious.
Twists and turns were plentiful throughout the pages making this one helluva mystery. I was surprisingly pleased and impressed with how this developed.
I think fiction readers will thoroughly enjoy getting to know Neferet and her family while reading this book. It kept me engaged and intrigued. I feel like this was a diamond hiding in the rough. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Sparky is back and has just experienced the worst day of her life! It all starts with having to go back to school, something she absolutely hates, especially because she has to have a bath every morning, wear clean clothes and worst of all, she has to wear shoes! However, having her breakfast and lunch made by Gilbert (who makes the most amazing sandwiches and desserts) is a partially redeeming aspects. On this particular day, she is in trouble at school before classes have even really started and so she has to go to the principal’s office, she gets teased by the older kids and she can’t spend time with her friends, so to take her mind off of it, she decides to go see her boss, Bookie.
Bookie isn’t his usual self though and Sparky isn’t sure what to make of it, especially when he suggests going to Monkey Island, a tourist attraction in downtown LA and as different to Bunker Hill as can be, and on top of that, he buys her ice cream! The monkeys however, are ratty and smelly, they are also loud and obnoxious, but she is meant to keeping an eye on be keeping an eye on Bookie who is talking to some unsavoury looking characters, so when Sparky looks round to see where he is, she is confronted by him running out of a dark passageway, looking pale and someone pointing a finger and shouting “MURDERER!” but Sparky knows that can’t be right, so when Bookie tries to run, he ends up on the roof instead and the only way down is with a trip to prison.
Sparky decides to investigate, but instead gets into more trouble and has to volunteer at the police station after school, so she fetches and carries and looks after Officer Bun Bun, the precincts resident rabbit! This is just what Sparky needs, school, then the cop shop and then just to top it all off, at home Tootsie and Gilbert are preparing Mademoiselle for her biggest audition to date! Can Sparky juggle all these balls while investigating the murder so that she can free Bookie and not ruining the audition? This is another tangled mystery where Sparky considers all her options, no matter how awful they may be to free her friend and survive everything else in this fast-paced race to solve the Monkey Island Murder.

This is the first book out of the series , there being five so far. I was super excited to pick this book up. I love all things supernatural. This author’s writing was engaging, and her ability to blend the mundane with the magical made reading this all the better. She created a vivid supernatural world with some amazing and intriguing characters. She also had some twists in the story that I truly didn’t see coming, weaving them in so perfectly. I can not wait to go read the rest of the books of this series.i highly suggest reading this books you can also enjoy the crazy ride

The Monkey Island Murder was a great addition to The Sparky of Bunker Hill Mystery Series. This is Book three. The 1930’s, depression era is not a friendly place for a young girl so she’s got to do what she’s got to do. Our main character is one again the street smart, complex, amateur sleuth Sparky. Bookie, Sparky’s boss, is of course still a criminal, but Sparky is very certain that he’s not a murderer. I enjoyed this book. The banter, mayhem, mishaps, and colorful characters made this a delight to read. I look forward to more of Sparky’s shenanigans while sleuthing.

Murder the Tey Way is the 2nd in the Golden Age of Mystery book club series, but it can be enjoyed as a standalone. There is some backstory of the characters- mainly Lexie and Brian’s history, as well as Lexie and Al. But, the author gives us enough details to be content if you skip book 1. Lexie finds herself in the middle of another murder investigation. I think the author did a good job keeping the readers engaged and without revealing the murderer until the end. There is a lot going on, and new character Gayle is introduced- Lexie’s sister, who finds herself as a suspect. It is a good cozy mystery that I enjoyed reading- I’ve never read any of Josephine Tey’s books.

Sparky is back and this time with a big personal adventure… going back to school. She is not happy about the decision but she knows it will be good for her in the long run. Instantly bullies make their appearance and call her names and push her around.
After her first day of school, Sparky goes to Bookie to see if he has any jobs for her. Instead he invites her to go to Monkey Island with him. Never been, Sparky is excited to go. What kind wouldn’t love to see hundreds of monkeys jumping around?! While there, Bookie talks to a man in all yellow. He looks uncomfortable so Sparky decides to keep an eye on him while also watching the monkeys. Next thing you know, the man in yellow is dead and Bookie is accused of murder. Sparky knows that he has been framed and no one is willing to help him. It is up to her to clear Bookies name and get him out of jail. She has a lot of obstacles in her way. The biggest one is school.
Sparky is like a whole different kid this time around. She actually thinks of others and has calmed down significantly. In the past, I found it hard to like her as the main character. This time, she is more caring and sweet. She no longer is homeless and it has made a huge difference mentally. This book has been my favourite so far in the series.

A Vampire in Disguise (Creatures of the Midwest Series) by Ava Silvers. This was a great start to a series. Its the story of Hazel who has received a suspicious tip that her sister Willow is missing. When Hazel decides she has to investigate she arrives in Shadow Hollow to find that no one has seen her sister in quite a while. In Shadow Hollow magical realms and people are welcome and not hidden away so Hazel is welcome there. Hazel and Willow are from the Goode Witch Family and Hazel is a Fire Witch. Even though Hazel has been welcomed in Shadow Hollow she has a strange feeling come over her. She can’t quit figure out what it is. Getting help from several locals and meeting several others on the search for Willow she finds some life long friends. But will she find her sister? From murder, to corruption, secrets and hidden agendas this read will keep you guessing til the bitter end. Such a fun paranormal read!

This is the third book in the Sparky of Bunker Hill Mystery series, and I think it’s our favorite so far! I have read all three of these with both of my kiddos although my 12-year-old is definitely the target audience with her ability to sit still through a couple hundred pages. Sparky is an incredible super-sleuth and such a wonderful character in the 1930s. The author painted such a vivid, detailed picture of Los Angeles in that time period and really made me feel like we were there experiencing it. Even though I am far from the target audience of teenagers, I found myself excited throughout this entire book. I highly recommend picking this up if you are a fan of cozy historical mysteries!

This was a fun read! Lexi’s book club is meeting again and this time they are discussing the way that Josephine Tey handled mysteries. Lexi gets a call from her long lost sister who soon shows up on her doorstep under mysterious circumstances. The next day, Lexi finds a dead guy in her backyard and her sister is packing up and getting away as quickly as possible. Lexi is sure her sister has nothing to do with the guy in her backyard but does she really know her sister?
There are several plot twists, secrets, lots of deception and more in this great read!

This is the 3rd book in the Sparky of Bunker Hill series. I have loved these books from the start when we first mean Sparky and her friends. This is a murder mystery series sent in the 1930s, which the author attention to detail really brings this era to life. You can’t help but fall in love with the main character Sparky. She is an 11 Year old kid, who at times acts beyond her years. But she also has a way of viewing the world from a child’s perspective and that leads to trouble being her second name. This story is full of twists and turns as well as banter and laughter. In this story Sparky’s friend and boss Bookie is framed for a murder that happened at the old tourist attraction of Monkey Island. Sparky knows that her boss is a criminal but he isn’t a murderer. So she now needs to find a way to prove his innocence. With so many twists and turns will she ever get to the proof she needs? To make matters worse Sparky returning to school doesn’t go well so she is placed in an internship with no other that Officer Mug and Detective Bernie. Could this help Sparky get to the truth and find the proof she needs to prove Bookie’s innocence? Sparky is one determined child who will stop at nothing to prove her friends innocence. No matter what obstacles she faces or how hopeless things seem she never gives up until she gets to the truth. I can’t wait for her next adventure.

Murder the Tey Way is the second book in the Golden Age of Mystery Bookclub, featuring Professor Lexie Driscoll and the members of the book club that she curates. Things start off with a bang when Lexie’s sister Gayle arrives unexpectedly and scared for her life in the middle of a book club meeting. A dead body in Lexie’s backyard the next morning puts Gayle as prime suspect, whilst other deaths and robberies occur nearby. Is it all related, and if so, how? It is an intriguing mystery with a diverse cast of characters with several having motives to kill. Of course, it wouldn’t be a cozy mystery without some red herrings and a dash of romance, to keep things interesting.

Hazel doesn’t expect Corwin, a vampire who has kept hidden nor that the town is growing on her. Who can she trust and will she meet the same end as her sister?
There is so much that goes on in this story with so many intriguing characters. I was entertained and thought that this was a great beginning to a new series. I really enjoyed Hazel’s character, I definitely want to see where her character goes in future books.

Lexie finds herself involved in another murder mystery when a body ends up in her backyard. Her sister has also shown up scared to death because she witnessed her boyfriend being killed. When she finds out about the dead man in Lexie’s backyard she takes off. While investigating the murder of the man in the backyard she finds out that some of her book club members are hiding some things from her. Are their secrets connected to the murders? Then one of her members ends up murdered. Lexie is so worried and confused and trying her best to solve this crazy mystery before someone else ends up dead. This is such a fun series and I can’t wait for the next cozy mystery!

From the beginning of this book, I was instantly hooked and couldn’t get enough of it, I was hooked from day one. This story was surprisingly good, filled with supernatural, mystery, adventure, thrill, chills, and so much more. Hazel and willow are sisters, and when one sister goes missing and isn’t found, the other sister goes into sister mood and does everything she possibly can to find her. But when willows ghost shows up with still no sign or her car, what really happened to her? This book had me on the edge of my seat, the characters were so well done it really made you feel like you know them, and the story line really flowed together and well. I can’t wait to read more in this series too, for the book didn’t end on a happy note, and continues in the next book.

This was a sweet clean fantasy filled with twists and turns to keep you guessing who will save the day. A little romance I hope to see bloom in the next book. I was totally engrossed in the story easily and the author kept me guessing throughout the story. I loved the writing style, it was easy to read and envision.
Hazel is our MC and is on the hunt for who killed her sister. She ends up in a town full of magical people and a vampire. The more she hunts for her sister’s killer, the more trouble she finds herself in. Quite an interesting and enjoyable read. Bring on book 2.

I love when a book starts off and immediately sucks you in. There is enough carried over from the first book that you feel informed, but it’s explained enough that reading it as a standalone probably wouldn’t be confusing. The friendship Lexie has with her new neighbor Joy makes it seem like she didn’t recently move in. They almost seem like they’ve been friends much longer. I was excited to have both Al and Brian in this book as Lexie works through her personal life. I also enjoyed learning more about Lexie’s past and family having her sister and son more involved.

Lexie sucked me in from the start. I couldn’t wait to read more. I couldn’t wait to read more. This was a page turner I struggled putting down. I was right there at all the book club meetings and suspecting everyone right along with Lexie. Every person she knew was a suspect in my eyes and I struggled crossing any of them off my list. The little bits of romance thrown in are nice and don’t take away from the mystery at hand but just show that people care about Lexie, even when she feels like she has no one in her corner. Now on to book 2!

A Vampire in Disguise is the first book in the Creatures of the Midwest series. It is a great, interesting and yet fun read. I was hooked at the paranormal and yet completely thrown off by the cover. I was expecting a YA, which would not have been disappointing (like I said it is the paranormal I came for) but to my surprise it was not YA at all, in fact quite an age span for everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end and very excited to read more of the series. The characters/creatures are fantastic and creative. You will get the paranormal of course and some romance, mystery, danger and lots of twists and turns.

Murder the Tey Way is book #2 in the Golden Age of Mystery Book Club by Marilyn Levinson. Lexie is back and finds herself involved in another mystery. She gets a surprise call from her sister Gayle as she prepares for her book club. The next morning she finds a dead body in her yard. Everyone is a suspect, from Gayle to the book club members. There are lots of twists and the author keeps you guessing. This was truly a cozy mystery. A warm fire and blanket would have made this experience perfect. The characters were both what you would expect and not simultaneously. I enjoyed the bit of romance and the little triangle that Lexi finds herself in. This was a wonderful story. Very enjoyable for cozy mystery fans.

When Hazel Goode receives an anonymous letter mentioning her sister, Willow, she knows she must investigate. It has been a while since anyone in the small town of Shadow Hollow had seen Willow, which is unusual. That’s how you’d describe the little town as well; unusual. Hazel and Willow are from the Goode witch family line. Hazel herself is a fire witch. Shadow Hollow is a place that both mundane and magical folks can openly live amongst themselves. So why upon arriving does Hazel get a strange feeling? Hazel meets Corwin who wants her to help solve a murder but she isn’t always trusting of folks, at least not immediately. She has to learn to trust the right folks to help solve the case.
This paranormal mystery is a wonderfully unique story that I truly enjoyed from the very first page. It was never dull and my interest was piqued from the get go.
I think fans of all ages will enjoy this wonderful story. I give this 4 out of 5 stars.
