Shadow and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns Book 2) by Kay L. Moody – Review by Jenni Bishop

Shadow and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns, #2)Shadow and Crystal Thorns by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Shadow and Crystal Thorns is the second book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns series. It is a YA Fae fantasy tale. The first book Flame and Crystal Thorns ended on a cliff-hanger and I was excited to see what was going to happen. Luckily it continues right where the first book ends which means the books should be read in order.

Kay’s writing is rich in details making it easy to imagine. This is a world with fae, magic and dragons. Who doesn’t love dragons? A magical world where there are those whom are mortal are out to destroy them.

It is a quick paced read with lots of suspense, action and danger.

The romance between Chloe and Quintus continues and she is just as torn between staying or going but things maybe different than she thought. Can her team finally sort the problems with the Mortals?

Nooooooooo! It also ends in a cliff-hanger. I hate them!

I wonder where will the story go next.

I enjoyed reading this young adult fantasy story. This is the second book in this series which I highly suggest reading before this one. It will help you enhance this series and show you where the characters have been before this point. This is an author that I have enjoyed reading. Her books are always entertaining and easy to read. This is no different. It is a well written story about a battle between fae and mortals for the same land. Who will win is up to you to read this book and find out. This is a fast paced, engaging story that had me coming back for more. The characters are connectable and just made the story for me. I really enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it.

This is a fantastic continuation of an exciting YA story. I would recommend reading this series in order as book 2 picks up from where book one left off. I was instantly pulled back into this story and the characters. It was as though I had move from one book straight into the next.
This book is even better than the first one. I enjoyed the fact that you could see clear development through the stories, it felt like we were getting to know the characters even more. This book adds so much to the series as a whole and I am looking forward to whatever is next.

I had loved the prior book in the series, and this one certainly does not disappoint in any way! I loved the story continued perfectly from where we left off on in the series. Needless to say, I was hooked!

Again, the author amazed and intrigued me as I read this installment in the series. I really enjoyed Chloe again in this book, she really has come a long way. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of when we had the battles of fae against humans It was vivid, written with intelligence, and visually stunning to picture. The book had a lot of suspense and action, I was gripped all the way through. I enjoyed Quintus already, and I enjoyed him even more now! The book was a book worth waiting to read, absolutely loved it!

Greatly written with strong anticipation as well as exctiment. I could not put it down. Was impossible not to love and see how this book would turn out. A must read for sure. Without a doubt, I highly recommend!

Book 2 in the series does an incredible job at picking up in the series where we left off. Chloe, Quintus, Mishti, Elora, and Brannick are fighting the war against the mortals. They are still trying to save the Fae from iron poisoning. This story is full of action, lots of fantasy, drama, suspense, and a little romance. There are a few subplots going on. The author ties them all in so well that it all still runs so smooth. That ending! Cliffhanger, didn’t see that coming…I can’t wait for the next book. This is definitely one of the best YA fantasy series I’ve read.

Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns)

Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns)Flame and Crystal Thorns by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Full disclaimer – I loved fantasy books when I was growing up. Flame and Crystal Thorns by Kay L. Moody offers SO much to the reader! The main character Chloe is a renowned apothecary in the human world, and is quite content with her new life. One day an old “friend” visits her and asks her to help save Faerie, a world she swore to never return to. Through a series of plot twists, Chloe has to decide what is most important to her. This book is packed with Fantasy, Romance, Adventure, and so much more! I really loved the real relationship between Chloe and Quintus and I can’t wait to see where Kay L. Moody takes this story in the remainder of the series. This may be my first Kay L. Moody book, but it sure will not be my last!

~ Journey into the land of the Fae ~

I just recently started getting into the Fae realm-type stories. I definitely was drawn in by the cover of the book, but then Chloe’s story quickly wrapped me up into her world. This adventure was definitely action packed, full of tears, and plenty of plot twists. Chloe is easily relatable, but finds herself in situations that might make you question how you yourself would respond.

If you enjoy mystery, romance, female heroines, FAE, or anything that has a good story line then this is the book for you! Promise you won’t regret it.

Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns)Flame and Crystal Thorns by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Flame and Crystal Thorns begins a new series by Kay L. Moody. It is the story of Chloe who appears to have been a minor character from an earlier series. I am not certain as I’ve never read another book by this author. The book can, however, be read, understood, and enjoyed as a stand-alone read – though it did have a slow feeling start without prior knowledge of the characters and mystical world Ms. Moody has created.

Ms. Moody did a lovely job of explaining character motivation and interactions found in her previous work. Her writing is flowing and filled with descriptive language to help the reader immerse in the story. I found the story enchanting with a creative use of magic and its magical boundaries. The main character, Chloe, feels real as she struggles through doubt and fear. In a refreshing twist, we follow a reluctant hero with abilities but also heart and crippling fears. The intwined love story gave the book an intriguing companion for Chloe and added some interesting twists. All in all, I think I will need to get my hands on more works by Ms. Moody soon!

Chloe has made a life for herself back in the mortal world as the town’s apothecary. As a human, she’s content living this way and is adamant that she will never go back to Faerie, but sometimes things change.

When a fae shows up begging for her help in saving Faerie, she repeatedly says no until it’s apparent she cannot keep refusing. Her sister is in danger and she must go help fight the angry humans poisoning Faerie with iron.

She packs a bag to make the trip, but when making their way into Faerie things take a turn when the humans are stronger than anticipated. Now armed with a new magic, Chloe has to save all of Faerie before it’s too late.

Flame and Crystal Thorns was a fun, suspenseful read with wonderful world building. If you’re a fan of Sarah J. Maas you will absolutely love this story! It pulls you in from the first page and doesn’t willingly let you go until you’re craving more.

I adored Chloe and Quintus, and I’m excited to check out book 2 in this series. I’m 100% hooked and ready for more time in Faerie with this crew!

I could not read this book fast enough!!! The next book in the series is to be released later this year and I will definitely be preordering it. My understanding is that there is a previous series that comes before this one, but I was able to enjoy this book without reading the other series.

I throughly enjoy this Authors writing, it is so vivid and engaging, even when describing bandaging a wound. We are given a wonderful plot and very loveable characters. I look forward to reading previous books and new ones to come.

This was amazing, I could not put it down, it took me to a whole another world, I thrilly enjoyed it. This book was filled with action the whole way thou. It really kept me in anticipation and on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen next with Chloe. Chloe is an amazing well put together character, her sass and determination and growth in the book made it hard not to enjoy her character. Chloe’s leadership and the was she was dealing with tasks make you know that she will be an amazing person and character. The visuals that were placed in the book about the Faerie world made you think you were right there and able to reach out and touch everything. This story did not disappoint me at all. Its an amazing and wonderful book loved it from start to finish. A must read book by far. Can’t wait to read the rest in this series.

Chloe has acclimated back into the human world after being in Fairy for a while. She is the village apothecary and does her utmost to heal all who are injured or sick. When some of the villagers come down with an illness that she can’t cure without using Fairy elements, she becomes very concerned. Then a Fae from her past, Quintus, shows up asking for her help to save other Fae from humans who are poisoning Fairy with iron. They quickly figure out that the illness in the village is connected to the poisoning of Fairy. Can they work together to save Fairy and thus the villagers in time?

I enjoy this author’s books because they write Fae characters well. I haven’t read the series that this spins off from, but I will. Chloe seemed a little on the frail side of being able to deal with conflict. I appreciated reading about how she deals with it and finding out why she responds in the way she does. I look forward to finding out more in the next books!

This was my first book by Kay L Moody and let me say I was not disappointed. Chloe, a mortal, is happy living her life in the mortal realm as an apothecary, helping people. You might say this is her passion. Her quite life is interrupted when a familiar Fae, Quintus, shows up asking for her help is saving the Fae land, Faerie, from the mortals. Chloe only agrees because her older sister is a Fae living in Faerie and she wants to make sure she is OK.
Chloe is not the normal hero is in the story and at first, she is afraid and timid, because Chloe is not a fighter. Chloe has to discover her self-worth and so she knows what to bring to the table to help Faerie. This book ends on a cliff hanger and hopefully book 2 will be out soon!

This is the first-time reading Kay L. Moody and I have to say it was not what I was expecting. Flame and Crystal Thorns was one of the first Fae books that I have read. The world of Fae hasn’t been a world I’m that familiar with. After reading this book I found out that this a spin off from The Fae of Bitter Thorn series, that gives more background to the characters in this novel. Even though you can read this book without reading the other series I think I would have understood the book better. Chole isn’t the normal main character I am used to which was a change for me that’s for sure. This book left a great cliff hanger that leaves me wanting more. I am ready to read what come next for these characters.

This is the first of a wonderful and expressive young adult series. We are met with Chloe who is the local apothecary for her small town. And she runs into many of the towns people having scurpus. At the same time a Fae man named Quintus. Who tells her that her sister is in need of her help.

Problem is the sister is in Faerie. And Faerie is under attack, This world building is amazing and you can feel the touches of magic that are beaming around every page turn.

Plus if you like an enemies to lovers story, look no further. I cannot wait to see where this story progresses to. I love Chloe and her personality and can feel her struggles. I just cannot wait. I am so excited for the next.

This was my first book from this author and I am already running to not only pre-order the second book, but also ordering her other series! This adventure is THAT good.

Chloe is enjoying her mortal life as her town’s apothecary, but people are getting sicker than usual. Quintus, a fae from Chloe’s past, shows up requesting help. Faerie is being overthrown by mortals and Chloe can help stop it, but will she? She vowed never to return but her sister’s life hangs in the balance.

I devoured this book in a day and am impatiently waiting for the second one! I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fast-paced thrilling Fae escapade.

Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns)Flame and Crystal Thorns by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m such a sucker for a good YA novel. Fantasy has never been a genre that I gravitate toward but what drew me in right away was the amazing cover. I mean…LOOK at it! And once I read the summary, I had to give it a chance. This is a spin-off of another series by Kay L. Moody; however, you don’t need to have read that series to understand what’s going on in this one. I’m sure reading the previous series would give you a deeper/better understanding of some of the events alluded to in this series, but the author does a great job of skimming over the events and filling in any blanks the reader might have. I will definitely be going back and reading the other series by Moody.
I absolutely love how the author completely immerses the reader into not only Chloe’s mortal world, but Quintus and Elora’s fae world. Moody’s descriptions are great and while I would call this book a slow burn, it still kept my attention and I had a hard time putting it down. Moody moves the plot forward at a great pace and I love how she develops her characters.
Chloe isn’t your typical main character heroine. She’s indecisive, reserved, and insecure; HOWEVER, she also has a sharp tongue, is witty, and will fight for what she believes in. Quintus is my favorite type of character…you love to hate him, but deep down inside you really love him. He’s broody, surly, and demanding, but he’s also protective, caring, and smitten with Chloe. I really like the slow, but clean 😉 burn between Chloe and Quintus. There is definitely some history between the two that (unless you’ve read the other series) we aren’t privy to, but I think it adds to the mystery of their relationship.
I can’t wait to see what Book 2 holds because WHEW! that ending! Be prepared to be left on a cliff so steep you’ll wonder how you’re ever going to get off. Overall, I would highly recommend this series!

Wow! What a fantastic and magical novel! I’m partial to tales of the fae and other magical beings. Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns Book 1) by Kay L Moody absolutely kept me enthralled and turning pages long into the night. The writing style is so descriptive that you can visualize every scene, character, and smallest little detail in your mind. It makes you feel like you’re actually there watching the tale unfold in front of you. The characters like Chloe, Quintus, Grace, and Elora are written so descriptively and “real” that you feel like you’ve known them for ages. I loved every bit of this book, and cheered Chloe on as she fought to save Faerie from the mortals. I give this novel 5 stars. To me, it is like reading some Harry Potter and J.R.R. Tolkien wrapped up in one. I look forward to reading more of Kay L. Moody’s work.

Chloe, who once resided in the land of Fae, has found her place in the mortal realm. She is an apothecary and is respected by those mortals whom she helps. Alas, the last few patients of hers she has not been able to cure. What is causing this malady? Unfortunately, it does not come from the mortal realm but rather that of Fae. What can she do to help the mortals and even her own family against this horrid illness? Why naturally she must revisit Fae and help those in that realm against Iron. If she can help the fairies to take back their castle and land, then maybe she has a chance to save those she loves.
Such a great fantasy novel. It is hard not to fall in love with Chloe and to want her to succeed. We follow her through many problems and challenges and difficult decisions. The characters are so well written, and the storyline is written at a pace such that I did not want to put the book down. I love the fact that the book is based in two different worlds that are attached by many things. What happens in Fae has it effects on the mortal realm. You can’t help but to root for Chloe and want her to succeed. Pick up the book and read it. You will not be disappointed. In fact, my 13 year-old- granddaughter thought the book was beautiful and cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

Chloe has become the town’s apothecary and with her love of reading, is very good at it. Happy to be back in the mortal realm, she has made a life for herself. So when a Fae from her past shows up demanding that she return, she refuses. Quintus states that there is a war happening and claims that she is the only one that can help. A strange illness is spreading through her village and Chloe realizes that for her to save her people, she’ll have to return to the Fae realm to get the antidote. Might as well kill two birds with one stone.

I liked that the one to save the day was a human. No superpowers at all. Chloe wasn’t strong or brave but she continually found the courage to persevere. Although she did annoy me on numerous occasions, she learned and grew throughout the story. I adored Quintus. He would never admit how much he cared for Chloe but his actions spoke volumes.

This is a magical, fantasy story filled with action and drama. My kind of book! I was a little disappointed that although Chloe and Quintus were great, the secondary characters had no substance, they were flat. The book ends on a cliffhanger which means waiting for the next book.

So this is the second book that I’ve read by this author. I actually forgot how much I enjoyed this authors writing. From page one I was immediately hooked. Chloe is such a selfless caring person. Even if it hurts herself to save others. I think she is also brave despite her fears of fighting. Sometimes brain is more powerful than brawn. Quietus is proof that people or in this case fae, can change. Together they make a great team. When humans threaten both the fae and mortal world will these two be able to put aside their differences to make it happen? The world the author has built us amazing. I can picture every detail in my mind while reading. It’s packed with action, romance, grief, surprise, and lots of conflict. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Flame and Crystal Thorns intrigued me from the start. Chloe is not your typical heroine of the fantasy world. She is not the brave warrior running into battle, or manipulating her enemies to bend to her will. Chloe is, however, an insecure healer with quick wit and a sassy spark. While Chloe is all too familiar with the fantasy world, she is perfectly content living amongst the mortals as a town apothecary, and would be just fine if she never had to return to Faerie. Fate doesn’t spin that way this time….does it ever? A fae from her past shows up with some somber news – the castle where her sister dwells has been taken over. Although reluctant, she decides she has to save her sister, so back to Faerie she goes. I have never read anything from this author, so no previous reads are needed to get into this series at all, but I will be grabbing the other books to see if it helps in any way. The world building and characters were well written and easy to follow, definitely worth the time!

I wanted to start this by saying Kay L Moody’s “Flame and Crystal Thorns” (Fae and Crystal Thorns Book 1) is a spin off from Kay L Moody’s “Court of Bitter Thorn” series. I was able to read this without reading court of Bitter Thorn but went back and read it when I was done. Chloe and Quintus are not your typical main characters, but you can’t help but love them. When Quintus shows up from the Fae realm needing the help of kindhearted Chloe, Chloe world is once tipped on its axis. She must find the strength and confidence inside herself to believe what Quintus does, she is the only one capable of saving their world.

To have finally found a series I can share with my daughters is a fantastic feeling and I know they are going to love it as much as I do. Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns Book 1) by Kay L. Moody – Review by Amanda Haller-Doris

Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns)Flame and Crystal Thorns by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I first started this book, I was unaware that there was a previous series that explained more of the back story of Chloe and Quintus’s relationship prior to the beginning of this book. As I read on, the information the author shared gave me a clear picture of the relationship and definitely made me want to read the original series to get even more information. The author was able to summarize and recap the previous book without it feeling like a recap or rehashing old information. When we meet Chloe, she is living a quiet life in the mortal realm with her family. She still has some access to magic, as she brought a book back from Fairie that helps her in her role as the apothecary, and her brother is a fae, who has masked himself to look like a mortal. She is trying to combat a strange illness that has broken out in her village, one that is similar to an illness she finds in her book from Fairie. As she is trying to save lives, Quintus arrives, demanding she return to Fairie to help the fae fight against the mortals who have attacked them, including her sister. Initially she refuses, she isn’t a fighter, she doesn’t like Quintus and distrusts his motives, and she has people to save from the illness. Unfortunately she realizes that the poison the mortals are using against the fae is poisoning Fairie and it has seeped into the mortal realm, making them extremely ill. If she wants to save her people in the mortal realm, she is going to have to go to Fairie and help fight against the mortals. Despite her physical attraction to Quintus, she doesn’t trust him and doesn’t like him. She just wants to save the fae and go home. Unfortunately the mortals are far more dangerous then she realized. . As they continue to work together and face new dangers, Chloe starts to recognize not only changes in herself, but in Quintus as well. As she starts to trust him further, she starts to realize that some of her core beliefs about herself might not be what she thought they were. The pacing of the story was excellent and the author did a great job of balancing the emotional scenes with action. I devoured the book in one sitting as I wanted to see how things ended. I can’t wait to continue the series and see how things will grow between Chloe and Quintus as they continue to fight for Fairie and the fae in it.
