4.8/5 stars This book is a great entrance into the Faerie world! It is well written and flows very nicely. The ending felt like a total movie and had twists and turns in every chapter. This author writes so well and I didn’t struggle trying to get into this read. I cannot wait for book two because the ending made my mouth drop! Definitely going to check out the other series in the meantime!

This is my first read by Ky L. Moody and I must say it was brilliant!
I fell in love with the main characters, Chloe and Quintus. Their story arcs should result in a beautiful series.
I have not read the original series which resulted in this spin-off series but if it’s anything like this book, I will love it. I did not feel as if I was missing out on any information by not reading the other series first so do not be afraid to start with this book.
The author’s take on this fantasy plot was very creative and enticing. I think all readers will enjoy it. I cannot wait for book 2.

Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns #1) by Kay L. Moody
This is the first book I’ve read by the author. Flame and Crystal Thorns is the first book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns Series. It’s also a fantastic read.
Chloe is once again back in the one place she doesn’t want to be. Faerie. She’s found that there are hostages being held and goes back. She finds out that her sister is there and really has to save them. The quote I chose for Chloe is: “I just need a little extra help to walk right now. Quit complaining.”

Moody-Review by Amanda Kimble
A great YA fantasy read with adventure and trials while trying to save a dying fairy realm.
This is the first book in a new spin off series from the author’s other series, Court of Bitter Thorn. While I had not yet read the other series I didn’t find it difficult to follow along as the author did a good job of summarizing the relevant points to make us understand why it was mentioned in this novel. I will be picking up those books later on though to fully understand Chloe and Quintus’ back story.
I would classify this novel as upper young adult to new adult. The FMC is a little bit older than your average young adult heroine but unlike most New Adult I’ve read there isn’t a lot of sexual tension or sexual activity in this one.
Heads up that this novel does seem to be set more within a regency time period, so women end up in arranged marriages. I enjoyed Chloe’s character and her desire to be independent and providing for herself (at least until she can find an appropriate husband). I enjoyed hearing more about her being the town’s apothecarian despite the taboo of a female working alone, especially in that field.
I wish we got to read about some of the events from Quintus’ view as we only get to see him through Chloe’s POV and I would have loved to know what he was thinking and feeling.
I enjoyed the storyline overall and can’t wait to see what comes next. I will say some of the twists and turns at the end of the novel I absolutely was not expecting.
Highly recommend for the mystical and magical qualities, and for a young woman looking to figure out her place in society (or realm).

I really enjoyed this fantasy read! I’m always willing to read a book about Fae. This story jumps right in and only reads from Chloe’s point of view. She grows and learns so much about herself when she returns to Faerie to help rescue the Fae. This book has non stop storytelling and the author does an amazing job at describing the world in which Chloe lives. She definitely has a great imagination and I will definitely be checking out more from her. This story in particular ends on a cliff hanger so make sure to have book 2 ready!

Flame and Crystal Thorns is a young adult fantasy romance, the first book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns series. This is a very accessible easy read, and you do not need to be an epic fantasy reader to enjoy it. This is a very immersive and well-written book. I loved Chloe and the cross-over between the Fae and ‘real world’. My favourite relationship between the characters was that of Chloe and Quintus. I cannot wait to see where their relationship goes as the series develops. The world-building and character development were the best parts of this book. This was the most immersive and captivating part of the book.

Moody – Review by Stephanie Robb
I love all books about fae and magic, intrigue and mystery. You know it’s a good book when you start pulling on a thread and it unravels into something you didn’t expect or a place you didn’t think you’d wind up. This book has all the components that make a page turner of a book. From an unexpected heroine, a handsome fae, mortals rebelling against magic, to the breadth of new magic.
I absolutely love Chloe as the main heroine of the story. A mere mortal with a half brother that is a fae who has chosen to live in the mortal realm where she feels she belongs. In fact she has finally found her place as an apothecary in her mortal town, healing the residents with poultices mixed together from fae recipes. Her picture perfect life is unexpectedly interrupted by the one fae Chloe never wanted to see again Quintus. It hurts for a fae to need to come beg for help from a mortal especially with one that has so much history with him. But with the mortals having developed iron weapons and holding an entire fae castle hostage which also happens to be where Chloe’s sister is with her husband. Quintus has no choice but to go to Chloe after all it’ll take a mortal with extreme love on the line to combat the revengeful crowd that has descended onto the fairy castle. Can Chloe, a mere mortal not only save her sister and the fae but can she do it while guarding her heart against the one person that has the power to decimate it?
If you like fantasy novels mixed with action and romance in the form of enemies to lovers then this book is perfect for you. Or if you are looking for an engaging new read this is an excellent choice that may get you hooked on a new genre.

This book was so very good!! I am excited to read the 2nd book in the series to see where it goes. Chloe is a mortal who is happy to stay where she is in the mortal world but finds herself back in Faerie. Chloe is an apothecary who helps others without thinking about herself. While in Faerie, she grows and learns things about herself that she never noticed before. She finds herself trying to help both mortals and faeries.

This book centers around a mortal named Chloe, the town’s apothecary. She is on a quest to heal many of townspeople of an illness that is quickly spreading, and it is proving to be more difficult of a task than she imagined. As this is unfolding, a fae she knew from her time spent in Faerie has returned to the mortal realm. He demands her help to save Faerie from mortals who are trying to destroy it. Chloe is determined she is not leaving her realm, but eventually she realizes that sometimes things do not go as planned.
I absolutely loved this book! With the author’s writing style and detailed descriptions of the characters and their surroundings, I had no trouble visualizing the story clearly as I read along. It was so well written and everything unfolded at a perfect pace for me. While I do wish I had read the books in the previous series to be able to better piece together certain aspects, it by no means diminished the fact that the story held so much intriguing depth to it. I will definitely be picking up the previous series written of the Faerie realm, and I cannot wait to read the next book as well. Beautiful work, Kay L. Moody!

Moody – Review by Katie Turner
Flames and Crystal Thorns is a wonderful, adventurous read. The main characters are so easy to fall in love with. Chloe is not your normal badass heroin that you normally see, she actually is the complete opposite. While she is badass in her own way, she is very timid and freezes in the moment of any dangerous situation. She currently is living in the mortal realm as an apothecary, and a very talented one at that, with the help of a Faerie book. That is until her past shows up and tells her that she is the only one who can save Faerie. She has sworn to never return, but now her sister is in danger, as well as both the Farie Realm and the Mortal Realm, what is she to do? Quintus, a Fae, is adamant she is the only one who can help. Mortals are trying to take over Faerie and have captured her older sister. I absolutely love the way the author went in a different direction than most magical storylines go. Children born from a mortal and a fae are born either fully mortal or fully fae. I admire that Chloe does not want to try and fit into the fae livelihood, but instead completely embraces the fact she is human and wants to be with her own kind. The lessons that Chloe learns through are both relatable and realistic.
There is a tension between Chloe and Quintus, but you do not know exactly what the history between them is, which I think is a missed opportunity. It does not affect the story in a significant way, but I believe that if the author went into detail early on, what their past held, it would be easier to understand why they interacted with each other the way they do.
I highly recommend this book to all fans of YA fantasy. I am very excited to read the next book in the series!

I love reading fantasy stories. The author has created a wonderful world to let me slip in to discover. This is a classic story of fae vs mortals told with flair and history. The characters are diverse and plentiful. They made me smile and root for them to win.
I do have a few issues with the storytelling and time frame. There were numerous times it mentioned eventful things that had happened in the past between the characters. After a but I had to look and yes there are other stories in this realm. So it will either make you want to read them or irritate you. I felt it was confusing since I have not read them and made me feel like it was a continuation. Past histories/tragedies, past relationships and how the faerie was then. Gar! That is not for me. Secondly is the time frame. This is a LONG book, which is normal for fantasy, that moved forward very little. There are too many pages of “in her head thinking/doubts”. It became tedious after a while and led to me skipping ahead. It also slowed the storyline down.
Overall the story is cute and interesting. The author does a good job with the various characters. While I love fantasy stories this one I became frustrated with the slowness.

Chloe has returned to the mortal world and sworn to stay away from Faerie. It has been a number of years since she left it behind, however she still uses protection against them. She full well knows the dangers of the Fae. With a stolen book she became the town apothecary to occupy her time until a face from her past shows up. Quintus, a Fae, has come to the mortal world to bring Chloe back to Faerie. He is adamant that she is the only one who can save his world. A mortal that is familiar with their ways. Humans are attacking with iron and her sister is in danger. Can she save her sister and the whole of Faerie?
A new story to dive into that sends the reader into the realm of the Fae. Unlike other stories it reveals that children born of mortal and fae are born as either full fae or full human. It was an interesting difference that I enjoyed while reading this story. I also enjoyed our main character’s attitude about wanting to remain in the mortal world with her own kind. The complex desire to be in a magical world yet knowing you don’t belong there is admirable in Chloe.
I am fully invested in this cast of characters and cannot wait to continue the series.

I loved the authors progression of the characters and couldn’t get enough of the dynamics. This appears to be book one of the Far and Crystal Thorns series and I can honestly say I cannot wait to see what else is to come! A great book to get lost in for a few hours or until its finished, because lets be honest, I couldn’t have put it down if I tried!

This is not the first book by this author I have read but is the first book in this series. I love her writing style and description and she is one of my favorite young adult authors to read. I always pick her books up the day they are released. This was no different. I loved how she intertwined the betrayals and the friendships into the storyline. It made it absolutely fit together with the rest of the storyline. As usual, I was unable to put this down to go to sleep until I had read the entire story. I highly recommend this story if you or your young adult are into fantasy folklore tales. Once you read one of her books you will be wanting to read them all.

Magical faerie adventures Absolutely loved this book. Chloe is a strong character and has quite an entertaining relationship with the Fae. This is a fast paced read, brilliantly written and engaging from start to finish. I didn’t realise that it was a spin off from another series, The Fae of Bitter Thorn, but now I am keen to read that series too. With action, suspense, Fae, magic and a touch of romance this book is an absolute winning read. Really need book 2 now!

Flame & Crystal Thorns is the first book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns series by Kay L. Moody. This is an exciting spin off from her ‘Fae of Bitter Thorn’ series, as we follow Chloe, who is Elora’s (from FoBT series) sister. Chloe is a healer in the mortal world, and is happy to stay as far away as she can from the world of the fae. She loves her sister, but doesn’t feel as adventurous as her sister, and Chloe definitely prefers her simple life as an apothecary. But when she discovers that humans are threatening the fae realms by using iron to hold the magical kingdoms hostage, Chloe (somewhat reluctantly) sets off to try to help. And so the adventure begins. This is a fabulous YA fantasy adventure, with danger, humans/fae, magic, a journey of discovery/self-discovery, romance, action, trials, and more. It ends on a cliffhanger, which means waiting for the next book to pick up where we’ve left off. This book sets the series off to a great start and I am excited to continue the adventure in “Shadow & Crystal Thorns” (Book #2), to find out what happens next. Happy Reading!

First reading this book was interesting. Being the first book by this author was new to me. I’m glad I took a chance on it! Chloe is an apothecary for her little town, recently coming back from the Faerie world she’s ready to be done with it and contempt to say in the human world. Then out of no where a Fae shows up on her doorstep and she much to her dismay has to go back to help this sickness from spreading into the human world. The writing was done beautifully, and I felt like that the book just drew me in. Seeing as this was a spin off, I didn’t realize what it was. You don’t need to read the other series to read this one. Will Chloe let love back into her heart? Will she be able to save her sister? Read to find out! Fair warning it does end in a cliffhanger and a excellent one that begs you wanting for more!

Chloe, a human, is content with her life. She has a nice little life with quite a few customers as an apothecary. At least she thinks she is content with her life, then a lot of the townsfolk started getting sick with an illness Chloe thought was a Fae only illness. Turns out the sickness is seeping into the human realm.
A fae, whom was once Chloe’s lover, shows up out of the blue asking for Chloe’s help to save all of the Fae from humans who have been using iron against them and taken over the castle.
Chloe is stretched thin as it is, focusing on healing pretty much the whole town, now she needs to save another species as well? Chloe’s sister is Fae so she doesn’t know where to go. She never wanted to return to Faerie, now it seems she doesn’t have a choice.
I could not put this book down as soon as I started reading it. Filled to the brim with action from the very start. I loved Chloe’s sass and determination. There was also a big character growth as Chloe realizes she can’t save everyone. The author was able to tap into all of those emotions making it easy to relate to Chloe as a fellow woman.
Finishing on a cliffhanger, I cannot wait until the next book is out!!

This is my first book I have read from this author and so happy that I did. This book is full of magic, fantasy, danger and intrigue. This story you meet Chloe, who is mortal and town apothecary. I love her strong sense of helping others and is content and happy with where she is. Things change when someone from her past calls on her to help. At first Chloe does not want to return for Faerie but learns she really does not have much of a choice….she much save her sister and others. Mortal beings are stronger than ever in Faerie…and not in a good way. This epic journey of Chloe and Quintus really immerses you on an adventure with some twists and turns. Great story, and the ending!! I cannot wait to continue this this series.

Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns Book 1) By: Kay L. Moody Review By: Susan Ratchford 5 stars
Flame and Crystal Thorns by Kay L. Moody tells the story of Chloe, a mortal living in the human world as an apothecary. She is one of the best at her trade not only because of her wonderful skill but because she used to live in Fae, a magical land with unique remedies for illnesses. She is confused when a new sickness strikes her home town and many end up feverish and dying within hours, and the sickness seems to be one of Faerie. Only then does a Fae from her past, Quintus, arrive, needing her to go back to the place she swore to never return. It is only when she finds out that a group of mortals armed with iron have taken the castle and all the Fae inside hostage, including Chloe’s sister Elora, that she agrees to accompany him. Will Chloe and Quintus be able to save all of Faerie or will old memories and feelings get in their way? This book took me on a wonderful adventure! It was so emotionally gripping I was invested in the fate of every single character both human and Fae! I honestly felt so immersed in Moody’s universe. I felt myself trying to read faster and faster just to find out what happened to Chloe and Quintus. Beautifully Written and such a fun read I can’t wait to read the next book! I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to fall into a delightfully unique story with relatable characters and a fun, fast paced adventure!

Flame and Crystal Thorns is the first book in this YA Fae fantasy tale. It is full of suspense and is highly entertaining. It is an exciting spin-off of The Fae of Bitter Thorn series. Kay has given us a clever plot and another exciting new world. She takes us into the intrigue and action, danger and angst and an unusual illness where it’s easy to like the characters and want to help in any way you can. Faerie is threatened and her sister held captive by mortals with iron.
Chloe is torn between helping the towns people or returning to the Faerie world.
There is also an enemies-to-lovers play between Quintus and Chloe with a forbidden lover’s story as well.

This is actually the first book by this author that I’ve read. I loved everything about it! I will be going back to read the rest right away. I lost sleep because of this book and I regret nothing. Chloe was absolutely amazing and I just loved going on her journey with her. Also, the world building was fantastic. Such a great book!

I really enjoyed this fantasy adventure. The author does an amazing job of creating the worlds our characters are in. I love the connection between Chloe and Quintus. There’s is a hate/love relationship but you can feel the attraction between them jump right off the page.
Chloe is a human girl. She works in the mortal world healing the sick. She never wants to return back to Faerie. But then a blast from her past returns insisting she needs to return to Faerie to help save everyone there. Chloe is still adamant she isn’t going to go until people are getting sick in her world and dying. Chloe realises that what is happening in Faerie is effecting people in her world and to save them she needs to save the people of Faerie.
So we are now on an adventure filled with danger and excitement. Every turn has a twist and as time goes on, will her feelings and connection with Quintus become too strong for her to ignore? Is she even able to save the world of Faerie? And what will the consequences be if she does fail, not only for the people of Faerie but for her people in the mortal world?

This book is full of magic and fae, what more could a girl want? I got pulled into this magical story from the very first page and I just couldn’t set it down. The details come to life right before your eyes and the characters are easy to relate to. Chloe didn’t have any plans to return to faery but circumstances bring her back so she can help save those she cares about most. She has to gather all of her courage and strength that she never thought she possessed. Chloe learns so many important life lessons along the way and really grows as a person. This book is full of romance, action, danger and magic and is one book you definitely won’t want to miss.

This is hands down a must read book! I loved how the book starts and how the flow goes and for sure how the author as well as the book keeps you in anticipation as you read! The book was an amazing read full of everything I would expect from a world such as the Faerie and so much more! Loved it!
I loved the visuals the author used to describe how the Faerie world and all its containments looked like. I found I was right there with Chole on my my own magical adventure! Speaking of Chole, she was such a relatable character. Her actions were human and I loved seeing how she handled occurrences and tasks she was given. She was quite commendable! The story adds more and more as you read, leaving you wanting more. I loved this new start to a series and I certainly can not wait for the next!
Amazing and wonderful book by a very talented author! I highly recommend this new series, and this book as not ones to be missed! Loved it from start to finish! I look forward to my next visit to Faerie!

I enjoyed this young adult fantasy story. This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites by this author. This is the first book in this new series for this author in which I can’t wait for the next book. I enjoyed how the author is able to pull me into her stories with her writing skills and her attention to details that make her stories come to life. This book is no different. This is a story about Chloe and her past that comes begging her to return. Chloe is happy to be back in her human life until her past comes knocking and asking her to return to Faerie. She reluctantly goes and now is faced with saving a companion and dealing with a new magic. You don’t want to miss what happens with Chloe. She is a great character that made the story for me. She is supportive and strong. I enjoyed how I was pulled into the story from the beginning. The growth of the plot made the story easy and entertaining to read. This is a story that took me on a fantasy adventure that was fast paced, engaging and just kept me coming back for more. I really enjoyed reading this story and I highly recommend it.
