This was just a reminder again of 2 things 1) that secrets always have a way of coming out and 2) sometimes ignorance is bliss because what we don’t know won’t hurt us ….

Rose ( love the name ) is a photojournalist and os injured ( more like trampled) while at a rally that turned a little wild so her camera is broken , she’s a little worse for wear with bruised ribs and an arm in a sling and now she’s got to go home to help with her mother after receiving a x CD all from her aunt and right now heading home is the last thing on her want to do list …..,

Rose’sI’m is diagnosed with terminal cancer and she calls her brother Kirk to come home and she uncovers what looks like a mystery in their family attic when she finds books , a travel bag and photo albums that hints at her father having another life and with her mum not answering her million questions and asking her to let sleeping hogs lies her curiosity is peaked even more ….

I loved every minute of this read , I learnt a few life lessons , I cried, I laughed , I got frustrated and irritated , I was reminded about how fragile life is and the liberating power of saying I’m sorry and forgiveness and I met some interesting characters along the way .

This is one of those books that when you read the last page you need some time to “ process “ it’ll stay with you ❣️📚

To make matters worse Rose has received a call from her Aunt Tess letting her know her mother is in the hospital and needs to come home. When Rose arrives at the hospital they find out more than that her mother passed out but that she has several things wrong, one of them being stage 3 cancer. Family Ties Family Lies is a definite roller coaster of emotions, family drama, secrets with love and suspense. This story will stay with me for quite some time….there is a lot of feelings and emotions poured into this story….and it was such a great read.

What can happen when buried secrets are discovered…should they stay buried or learn the truth behind it all. This happens to Rose Webster….going home to help her mother as she battles an illness.. trying to pick up the pieces as they both re-discover old photos in the attic..reminiscing. When a mysterious photo is discovered by Rose, she asks her mom about it only to be brushed off. Rose, being the photojournalist that she is, cannot let this mysterious photo go and wants to discover what this is all about. As Rose navigates this she has to be sure does she really want to discover the whole truth behind it all….or leave it alone like her mother wishes.

I highly recommend this book…the secrets and turmoil…this book was hard to put down.

I haven’t had a book affect me this deeply in an exceptionally long time! I hadn’t read anything by this author before, but the cover drew me in immediately. I knew I was going to read this book before I read the synopsis, and once I did, I dove right in. It was impossible to pull away from once I started, so I stayed up all night needing to know what was coming. The emotions hit you deeply and at times I shed quite a few tears. It doesn’t feel like I’m reading about Rose and her family, it feels like I’m experiencing it firsthand which is an incredible feat! The mystery that was woven into the story was always in the back of my mind even though I couldn’t figure out what was happening. It was well worth it and one of my top reads of the year so far. It doesn’t matter your go-to genre, I think everyone should give this one a chance. You won’t regret the journey it takes you on!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Family Ties Family Lies” by Jacqueline Boulden is a gritty and raw portrayal of the complex dynamics within a family. This debut novel showcases the author’s ability to delve into emotional depths and explore the consequences of secrets, lies, and the ties that bind.
One of the highlights of the book is Boulden’s knack for crafting realistic and flawed characters. The Harrison siblings are all flawed in their own unique ways, making them relatable and human. As the layers of their complicated family history are slowly peeled away, readers are drawn into a web of deep-seated animosity, buried resentments, and long-held secrets.
While the exploration of the family dynamics is certainly compelling, the pacing of the book can be inconsistent at times. Some chapters feel rushed, lacking the necessary build-up and development, while others are rich with emotional depth and tension. This unevenness detracts slightly from the overall reading experience.
Boulden’s writing style is engaging and introspective, showcasing her talent for vivid descriptions and evocative imagery. She tackles sensitive subjects such as betrayal, forgiveness, and the pursuit of personal identity with sensitivity and authenticity.
“Family Ties Family Lies” is not a light-hearted read, as it delves into heavy themes and explores the darker aspects of family relationships. However, Boulden’s skill at crafting compelling characters and the exploration of these complex issues make it a thought-provoking novel.
In conclusion, “Family Ties Family Lies” is a promising debut that delves into the intricate layers of family dynamics. Jacqueline Boulden demonstrates her talent for creating complex characters and navigating emotional terrain with sensitivity. If you enjoy stories that explore the complexities of familial relationships and the weight of hidden truths, this book offers an engaging and thought-provoking journey.

This is not my usual read but I am really glad I picked it up. This was a great read from the start. I really love Rose’s character and enjoyed reading from her point of view. This book had a plot twist I did not see coming at all. This story made me feel a lot of emotions I was not expecting to feel when I picked it up. It was definitely a read where I had to know what was going to happen and what Rose was going to discover if she kept digging into her family’s past. I literally read it one sitting! I will be looking for more books from this author as they have a very easy writing style with characters that are easy to relate to. I really enjoyed this story. It is a mixture of family drama and mysteries. The author does a great job of describing the scenes and the characters so much so that it feels like you know the characters personally.
This story gripped me from the beginning as we meet Rose and her mother. When her mother was diagnosed with cancer Rose moves back home to care for her. As a journalist/photographer she is not one to turn her back on a mystery and when crime starts happening in the small town she wants to get to the bottom of it.
Added to this is the mystery involving Roses own family.
When Rose discovers secrets of her fathers in the attic she feels compelled to get to the truth but when she is warned off by not only her mother but also her brother will she back down or will their resistance make her even more determined?
Are some family secrets best kept in the dark? What will be the consequences of uncovering these secrets?

I loved Rose’s determination to uncover the truth and my heart went out to her as she struggles to for and come to terms with her mother’s diagnoses. I honestly couldnt put this book down as each chapter left me wanting to know what happens next. I really enjoyed this story. Parts of it are quite emotional to read, situations around Rose and her mum and her illness really pulled at my heart. This author did a great job of making the reader emotionally invest in the characters.

Family Ties Family Lies is different than many of the books I’ve read lately in genre but well worth reading. While the storyline was rich with emotion and dramatic, it was very well written. I was not sure how emotional the storyline would be having lost my mother a year and a half ago but the book had me engaged from the very first chapter. I liked the characters and felt like they grew together through unexpected twists. This was a great introduction to a new to me author.

The main character must grapple with her mother’s rapidly declining health, while accidentally discovering a never-discussed secret…as well as a half sibling she knew nothing about. A brother and sister learn to accept the past failings of their parents. I loved this book! It was a page turner for me right from the first chapter. Rose is a journalism photographer. She gets injured on the job. At the same time, her mom falls and need Rose to go home to rural New York to care for her. While home, Rose tries to solve more than one mystery in her town and her life. I love Rose. She is so genuine. I could really relate to her having to be there for her mother. I was confused at first by Deputy Sheriff Stover’s presence in the book, but was pleasantly surprised by her character as the story unfolded. At first, I wished Rose could have found a man to be close to, but by the end of the story, I was content with the people she had in her life to love her.

A page turner that kept me wanting to find out more. A family’s secret that’s been hidden comes to light when Rose gets a call that her mother Carly isn’t doing well and needs Rose’s help. Rose has her own issues due to getting injured on the job as a photojournalist. When Rose gets to her childhood home in upstate New York, she soon finds out how sick her mother really is. Rose tries to get her big brother to come up to help with their mother but as a lawyer with current open cases, he can’t get away.
Being in her childhood town and home brings up some things that have been secret for years. The story brings drama, intrigue, danger, hurt feelings, and so much more. But family can still be strong even after some hidden lies are brought to the surface.
I did cry a bit as I read the book, I could totally connect with Rose as she tries to be there for her ailing mother.

Rose Webster is a photojournalist on the mend and questioning her next steps for her life. Her most recent assignment put her in the midst of a riotous protest where she was pushed to the ground. Unfortunately, her fall ended up seriously injuring her camera arm. As she is contemplating what comes next for her, her aunt calls and tells her to come home to her hometown of Lake Amelia to help her mother -whose health is in question. When her mother receives bad health news, Rose knows she cannot leave her side as she is her last living parent. In helping her mother prepare for her end stage of life, Rose comes across books signed to her father from an unknown person. When a picture falls out of one of the books, her photojournalist side cannot help but look into it more. As more of the puzzle is revealed, will Rose find the answers she is looking for or will she only find more questions?

This is my first time reading this author and I was not disappointed. The author weaves a very intricate story about family love, loyalty, and forgiveness. Rose discovers that maybe her personal struggles are not so personal but instead an observed behavior that she picked up on growing up. I appreciated how the author brought in other characters from Rose’s formative years who also helped her solve the mystery. The background information given for them wasn’t extensive, but it didn’t need to be, and it was perfectly done. The answer to the mystery was also well done. I didn’t even guess who it could be until a couple pages before the reveal. All in all, it was a good read, and I would pick up a book by this author again.

This was such a sad tale that had so many unexpected events that I just couldn’t put the book down for the couple of days that I read it. It was so heart-wren3/2024ching to follow along as our main character, Rose deals with the illness of her mother and steps into the role of caregiver right after being involved in a tragic accident while on the job. Secrets of her father’s past are unburied by Rose who is not one to leave a good mystery unsolved, but will it result in more pain and suffering for her dying mom, or will it be the death of her? This is a story filled with mystery and sadness but is a great suspenseful read as you follow along a couple of different storylines all playing out at the same time. Rose is a great photojournalist, and despite her inability to use her right arm, she continues to follow along with a couple of different mysteries that she finds herself in the middle of, despite the warnings to let sleeping dogs lie. This was a good book, I really enjoyed myself, and the characters were very dynamic in their personalities.

From the beginning I was hooked. I was right there with Rose, my arm hurt, my heart was conflicted with wanting to spend time with her Mom and wanting to find out more about her Dad, my mind was reeling about what could be the logical next step. I was 100% invested in this story.
I felt for Carly as she is coming to the end of her life, for Tess as she is watching her sister get weaker and knowing what that will mean. I felt for Rose as she is wanting to communicate with her brother and have him there, yet understanding that he has his own reasons to not want to come back to their hometown.
Honestly, this easily made it onto my favorite books of 2024.
Jacqueline Boulden definitely got me interested from the beginning and kept my interest the whole way through. I definitely want to read other books written by her.

This was an entertaining and engaging novel which kept me captivated throughout. Photojournalist Rose Webster was injured after being shoved and landing on the hard pavement whilst at a raucous rally. Not only does she have one arm in a splint, a weakened right hand, and bruised ribs but her camera was also broken. Whilst filling out insurance claim forms her Aunt rings to say that she needs to return to her childhood home in Lake Amelia, to care for her ailing mother. While she’s there Rose decides to have a sort out of the attic and finds some of her late father’s personal items, including a photo hidden in a book and a travel bag which seem to suggest he might have had a secret life. Rose is determined to find out the truth even when she discovers something that shocks the whole family. I found Rose to be a likeable and relatable character who I felt engaged with. Both the setting, especially the small town of Lake Amelia in the foothills of the Adirondacks, and the characters were brought vividly to life through the descriptive narrative which made me feel immersed in the story. The intriguing storyline and plot twists kept me hooked and I found this to be a real page turner.

How far would you go to uncover family secrets?

Family Ties Family Lies by Jacqueline Boulden is the first book that I have read by this author, so I really didn’t know what I could expect from one of her stories when I snapped up a copy to explore. I took the chance, and I am glad that I did, as I found an intriguing women’s fiction mystery- a bit of a multi-faceted smalltown family saga/drama, with plenty of emotion, long-held secrets, lies, suspense, tension, intrigue, family dynamics, love, trauma, pain, angst, forgiveness, investigation, and dramatic developments.
Rose’s life is turned upside down in more ways than one. By going ‘home’ to care for her mother, she stumbles on some intriguing information. Things take a mysterious turn and Rose is about to discover some long-held secrets. The story takes us on an emotional journey- a real little mystery, with crime and investigation that has far more going on that first meets the eye. What happens made for a great read that had me engrossed to whole way through.
I will definitely be on the lookout for more of Ms. Boulden’s books to read in the future.
Happy Reading

Thank you, Jacqueline Boulden!

Rose and her Mother Carly took me by surprise. Even though I read the description of this story. I did not expect to be completely drawn in and torn apart. The story not only made me ugly cry, it made me stay up all night to find the answers to the one big question. Props to Rose for wanting to be with her mother when she was most needed. Even though things got intense this story is well worth reading. The author had perfect characters for this story. This is a well written rollercoaster ride with so much to discover. The suspense will keep you reading, the family will bring out the tears, and the tissue, chocolate and wine could be your calming. I hope you enjoy this story and the author as much as I did.
