The True Purpose of Vines was different from something I usually read. Yes the romance aspect pulls me towards it but it’s still different. It gave me Walk in the Clouds vibes. Different scenario but the vineyard was still damaged. In this case it was by Phylloxera vs a fire. I liked it. Sometimes different is good, and this case it was. The author wrote a beautiful story based in Portugal across a few of the country’s vineyards.
Griffin has become the owner of Boa Vista, he needs to travel into the country to get it right. Before leaving he makes an arrangement to become Mr.Croft’s partner as well as an arranged marriage with his daughter. Sounded like a great plan, until the vineyard’s changed him.
Julia runs Vesuvio in place of her late husband. Doing everything she can to keep Tony’s future afloat. What those around her don’t realize is it’s her doing everything vs a man. Women during that time didn’t do manual labor, that was left to the men of the household. When she comes into contact with an English stranger things begin to change.
Pedro has wanted Julia for 10 years. Now that she’s available he intends on making her his. One thing he didn’t realize, she doesn’t want him. Not like that. They were good friends growing up and that’s how she wants to keep it.
The tension between these 3 characters is palpable for different reasons. A triangle of sorts. The author navigated beautifully.
Who ends up with Julia?
Does Phylloxera destroy all their crops?
Is there a way to stop it?
Those are just some of the questions the author makes you ask yourself while reading this story. It’s written like it should be told like a tale, or legend for that matter. Which gives it a different depth that I liked.
