A really good take on the magical school style of novel for teens. This one focuses on when a student goes into their chosen school through some arcane ritual. We follow Makayla as she winds up at the disreputable Gravedigger academy. Through her studies, some rumors and the other students she finds out some secrets of the school, her world and about herself and family. I felt this was a really good take on a concept that can be hard for authors to do well without being repetitive. King manages to hit it out of the ballpark though!

I haven’t read a good YA book in quite some time and this was a good start! To start: The only reason for 3 stars is because I feel like there was a LOT going on and it was a little clunky trying to connect everything.

Now what i liked: I liked the premise of kids attending magical academies- and the way they discover which academy they have been accepted too was super neat. The staff were interesting with varying personality, and the familiars were super cute. Makayla is your typical teen- mischievous, curious, and loves to break the rules! Thomas might be my favorites of the side characters- he had some of the funniest lines (and who doesn’t love squirrels?) There’s a little bit of drama but nothing too earth shattering. If you like magical academies and a quick read- give this one a read friends!

I will be reading the next for sure!

Grave Digger Academy by C.A. King is a fun, fast paced, ya, paranormal read that you don’t want to miss. This series gives you a Harry Potteresque feel as you learn magic with the witch, Makayla and her unique friends.

When Makayla gets denied by her top three paranormal academies she is sent to the academy that no one wants, GraveDigger Academy. It’s here she meets a unique group of individuals, some who become friends while others are better left as enemies. Makayla faces a lot of unique twists, turns, and challenges in this book.

Personally I loved being immersed in this new world of magic. This series has everything you want in a ya paranormal book such as: action, humor, interesting characters, great world building, and an interesting storyline. I’m really glad I found this book and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.

Grave Digger Academy is a fun YA fantasy novel. It’s perfect for fans of magic boarding schools! This story sees Makayla failing to live up to the expectations of her parents and older brothers, but finding her own place and path in the world.
There’s a fun cast of characters! Makayla soon gets to know classmates such as Thomas, Cali and Leo who are united by not having applied to Grave Digger Academy but ending up there anyway. And there are the teachers, such as Tallen, Ms Moth, and Ms Dred. Makayla’s never had much talent for getting on with people, and has to learn to make friends and work with others.
The world building is lovely – the school is very well described as Makayla arrives and gets to know it, and it’s so atmospheric and captivating! I really felt like I’d been transported to a new and magical world – so much food for the imagination!
This book gets five stars from me! I’d recommend it to confident teen readers and young adults who’ve enjoyed magic school books in the past such as the Children of the Red King series and are looking for something new to fall in love with.

Makayla applies to several schools and hopes to be picked for the school she really wanted to attend. Unfortunately, she gets accepted into Grave Digger Academy, the school where no one wants to attend.

She faces the school year not only with the disappointment of her family hanging over her but she must also face it by herself.

Not much excitement concerning the curriculum with it mostly consisting of spells needed to ensure that the dead stay dead. But Makayla soon finds out secrets involving her family.

The title of this caught my attention. It just seems different from other Young Adult novels. A school where students learn spells to guarantee that the decrease stays that way? I am a sucker for novels set in schools. It just gives me this gothic vibe.

I really like Makayla as a protagonist, especially her optimism. I look forward to reading how she grows as a character.

This is a short read but it definitely leaves me wanting to know more. I saw there were two other novels in this series so I am excited to start them.

I almost didn’t pick this one up to read but thought, why not? I’m so glad I took a chance on it!

It’s Makayla’s first year to attend academy and she spent some time choosing her top 3 picks, just like all witches get to do when they come of age. Her picks are in and she waits but hears nothing prior to the start of school. She wakes up late and misses her ride so she’s doomed to take the bus. No one but losers ride the bus the school! She arrives at the door to the academy but isn’t sure which specific realm she’s assigned to. She quickly learns that she has to learn everything for herself. She’s from a strong family of witches who’ve been accepted to the best and most prestigious schools so she has high hopes.

Makayla soon learns that she didn’t get any of her top 3 choices, so the only other option was an assignment to the Grave Digger Academy. NO ONE applied or wanted the Grave Digger Academy and just wait until her dad hears about this…..her life is over!! Things start to come to light and Makayla begins learning more about her family, along with the mysterious amulet her mother gave her shortly before boarding the bus. Will she survive her first year? Even better, what about summer vacation after her first year?

This was a super fun read. There are elements of comedy (I laughed many times!), romance (very subtle), and paranormal activity. It is a very well written story that kept my attention throughout. I look forward to reading more books in this series!

There’s a reason people don’t believe in monsters and it’s not because they don’t exist!! Boy are you in for a treat with this set!! I am LOVING it!! I could totally see this set put into a movie!! And if it ever does, know I will be watching it asap!! Anyways, to the book!! This is Makayla’s second year in the paranormal academy system. THANKFULLY, she doesn’t have to ride the bus the first day and her brothers can drive her. After finding out last year that she wouldn’t be going to any other school, because she’s being watched, she must make the best of it. She doesn’t know what is in store for her that year until her and her class are called back early. Thinking that she will get some time in the local village she’s excited to get there. Boy is her first day, yet AGAIN, an adventure though!! Maybe she’s seeing things, but getting to the library is strange. With the one and only transfer position withheld last year, she has all the same classmates, so they meet up on the way. Maybe they won’t be separated this year. Maybe classes will go back to normal. Hopefully?? Upon arriving at the school they learn about some changes, good and bad. But at least they are letting her have a bit more freedom! Which is good because the school is participating in an academy competition with the other schools and she can use all the help she can! If they can win they can bring some desperately needed funding and prestige back to the once sought after school, but if they lose the school could close down forever! Then what would happen to her?! No one WANTS to go to Grave Digger Academy anymore. Most are thrown into it like Makayla, without any say in the matter. So if she is kicked out of the one place that took her she dreads what might come next!! But she is determined to save the school, learn as much magic as she can, and find out more about her family history and all the weird things that seem to be attracted to her! But something is off about the competition and the map. The map changes after the competition is already under way. There was to be no interference and no one is allowed on the map except the competitors and their helpers if they choose to bring them. When their own shovels in their back yard throw her in the wrong direction she knows something is up. Will she help win the competition and in turn help save the school? Where is this shovel taking her?! Why does it always have to happen to her?? Makayla is out of options and must do something desperate to not only save herself, but the school. Will her plan backfire and in turn everything burn down around her? And who is messing with not only her, but the competition?! Man oh man I can’t wait to read the rest of this set! I am invested to see what happens next!! You COULD read this book alone, BUT I wouldn’t recommend it. Some stuff happens in the first book that is referenced in this book and you will be a bit lost. Anyways, grab this book (and the others!) and unearth the mysteries to the Grave Digger Academy!

Oh my gosh the second book was JUST AS GREAT as the first book! I cannot say enough great things about this author and her books and this one is vastly becoming my newest favorite books! In this series Makayla is back with her helpers and is trying to stay out of harm’s way as well as out of trouble. When she and her classmates sign up for the school games that is when everything goes haywire. My favorite character this book is Ollie by far. Every time it discussed him, it made me chuckle and laugh. Seriously this book was such a great fast read, and I was disappointed when it ended! I cannot wait for the 3rd and 4th books to come out as I NEED to know what is going to happen. This author is WONDERFUL and all of her books that I have read have been wonderful.

So I love all things paranormal, throw in an actual academy setting and I’m in love. I have been looking for a new series and this is it.

So Makayla has applied to multiple paranormal academies, but is turned down by all but one. The one she doesn’t want to attend, but with it being her only choice she must go. As she goes to the academy her abilities develop and she learns more about her past family secrets. While keeping the bodies where they belong, in their graves, Makayla must make a moral decision to either stay on the side of good or switch to the sweet calling of evil. Why was Makayla denied entrance to the other academies? Does it have anything to do with her family secrets? What about when evil calls?

I loved the start to this new series by C.A. King. I have read a few books by this author and so when I saw this one recommended I knew I had to read it. If you like paranormal books that have a magical feel to it then this book is the one for you. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series to find out what happens next.

Grave Digger Academy (Grave Digger Academy Book 1) by C.A. King. I love this author so of course I wasn’t surprised that I loved this book. Its the beginning of a wonderful series and I can’t wait to read the rest of it. This one is the story of Mikayla the only daughter of seven kids. She has always felt like she is the black sheep of the family because her brothers are great at whatever they choose to do. When it comes time for her to start school in the paranormal studies she picks three different ones but of course she doesn’t get in any of them. She ends up admitted to Grave Digger School! How in the world did she end up here. Grave Digger’s are just that they dig graves and make sure the spirits stay there. She is not happy about it but she makes the best of it because she can’t get out. Will she finally be successful in something? Read this great young adult, paranormal read to find out!

In the second book of the series, we see Mikayla returning back to Grave Digger Academy for her second year in the paranormal academy system. Usually, it is now that the students find some have transferred to other academies but not his year. The school has been entered into the inter academy competition.
It is most important for the Grave Diggers to pull together and succeed, winning will no doubt mean that the academy is safer than it is within the system and improve their status amongst the paranormal world.
We follow the students we met in the previous book, watch them develop more of their characters and magic; staff members old and new are always having an input.
Once again C.A.King has drawn me into their world and they continue to build it keeping the reader hooked, certainly a read that is difficult to put down. I can’t wait to read the next one and see what happens.
I love the characters in this series. There is such a great dynamic between them all and it complements the story so well.

I really enjoyed this book. Yet I’m torn on what to rate it. There were many parts that seemed skipped over, but I feel like it will all be explained as I read more of the series. I’m definitely left wanting more. Makayla’s character was so relatable and complex. At first I thought she was kind of shy and down, but she was pretty spunky while at the academy. I can’t tell if being a 7th born is a good thing or not yet but I can not wait to put my granddaughter to bed so I can start the next book tonight!! Overall very good young adult paranormal book.

Makayla is sassy, smart and determined. The characters are well thought out and the magic/world is so intriguing – loved the urban legend and Makayla’s magical friends.
The ending was a bit convenient but I am excited to pick up the next book!

I have read several books by C. A. King so I was very excited for this new series. This is a young adult paranormal novel that follows a young witch at the beginning of her journey in Academy, where witches learn how to properly use their magic. Makayla must navigate an unappealing Academy, classes where topics are taboo, and run-ins with the dead. Overall, I really liked this book. It’s a great start to the series. The characters are well thought out, and relatable, even if they’re witches; there is a great story line as well. There were parts throughout the story, however, that felt rather rushed. It almost felt as if some thoughts were incomplete. The characters and the overall story kept me reading and interested and I am honestly looking forward to the second book in the series.

So she is back up to her shenanigans tis year, only this time the stakes are higher with the inter-academy face off. Will the GDA be able to take back their spot and be able to keep the school open, or will they fail and the school’s doors close for good? In this second installment prepare for more shenanigans, twists and turns, and the return of our favorite class and classmates! I hope the third book is just as amazing as this one was!

It is book two in the series which is just as great if not greater than the first one. This is a well written story about a new group of students at the academy and they are about to learn there is so much more about this academy than meets the eye. I enjoyed how the characters are creative and unique. They kept the story engaging and made it hard to put down. They have great growth throughout the story as well. I found this book to be fast paced and just an entertaining story to read. I highly recommend this book and this author.

Her struggle being the youngest of her six brothers and the pressure she feels to get into the “right” school is so relatable. Her drive to understand, even in a place she doesn’t feel she’s supposed to be is really cool too. The friends she makes, the teachers, her helpers, every character is interesting and there is something about every single one that kept me wondering more about them as I read this beginning of Makayla’s journey. If you love Harry Potter, then you are going to love this first book in the Grave Digger Academy series!

It starts off with a young teen trying to find out about herself, she’s curious and questions everything. Makayla wants to be in a prestigious academy for witches but soon realizes that she’s put into Grave Digger Academy, the exact opposite of prestigious. She soon realizes there is more going on than what meets the eye.
With help from a couple of soon to be friends, she starts twisting the tables on the witching world. This was a great and fast read, full of teenage angst and slightly cringe-worthy (think about being in trouble with your parents back in high school).

This is a great YA Fantasy for Harry Potter fans and a very good read for beginner readers looking to go a litter further in chapter books. Although, the style of writing was not my particular favorite, I would definitely recommend!

I’m so happy I picked up this book to read. I’ve enjoyed several books by this author so I jumped at the chance to read the first book in the new series. A fun young adult paranormal book that includes a first year witch who finds herself at the Grave Digger Academy when her hopes were to attend better academies that were available. How will Makayla survive this low point, deal with a villain, and still learn valuable knowledge to be something more?
Makayla is young and just figuring out things in life. She is challenged not only by things she is learning at the academy but also things she didn’t expect. The new environment and friends help her find her way and experience life away from family. It kind of reminded me of when I went to college and had to figure out life.

This is the second book of the Grave Digger Academy series and it did not disappoint. I read the first one last year and thought I would lost when I decided to read the second one a year later but it was really easy to get back into the groove. The way the author writes is really easy to follow and they really know how to broaden their horizons. I have read a few different works from this author and each book has a completely different genre and world. The author does not disappoint.

It is Makayla’s second year in the academy and due to the shenanigans of the first year, the Headmistress has decided to forgive and forget if Makayla and her small group of friends attend the academy games. The group starts training for the games with little hope of winning them. All the while Makayla is still on the lookout for Wholly who has not been seen since last year.

Can the academy win the games and will Wholly show up to take revenge on Makayla? Read the second book now!

Grave Digger Academy 1 was a good book, that quickly drew me in, and I look forward to book 2. It is a short book, that I was able to read in a day or 2, as I didn’t want to put it down. The characters are well written and each have their own personality, which comes through very well. I am not typically big on paranormal books, but the cover art drew me in. The author does a good job of laying the ground work, and providing the details for us to envision this world. We follow Makayla, in her first year of the paranormal academy, which seems similar to college. She applied to 3, and was denied from all but this school- which is the taboo school no one wants to go to, as it seems to be the last resort for the rejects. I was a little confused why there are grave diggers and Grave Diggers, and why they aren’t given different names…. but I hope that will become more clear later in the series. Makayla has a bit of mystery to her, and we slowly learn that she is more important than she seems at first- Made me think of Harry Potter, in the importance and history. I recommend this book and am dedicated to the series now- keep them coming!

I’ve read other books by this author and her style of writing and attention to detail along with amazing characters make for a epic story. She’s not thrilled about it and is but trying to figure out how to dig herself out of it. She’s about to discover how temperamental corpses can be especially when they don’t want to cooperate. Having read Grave Digger Academy 1, I couldn’t wait to continue Makayla’s story in this book. The author continues not only to build the world but the characters, learning more about how they think, learning how to find their own hints. We start off with Makayla heading to day one of year two at the academy. Only this year is the year of the Inter-Academy Games, winning could give Grave Digger Academy (GDA) some of its prestige back, but losing could lead to the doors being closed for good. Once again, she doesn’t have a slip that tells her where to go to find the portal to her school, so she returns to the library, the place she found it in year one.

Having found a second portal in the library she is surprised to find out from the Headmistress that the year two portal is in the gym and shouldn’t have been able to return through the same place as last year. Confused Makayla and two of her classmates arrive at the school confused about being summoned a week early, during year one orientation week. Quickly it is apparent on why they have returned early; the Headmistress has signed Makayla and her classmates up as the team for GDA in the games. With one major catch, agreeing Makayla would be allowed to visit the town, and hang out with her friends as she pleases, disagreeing would result in the school being locked down with guards and new instructors turning GDA into a prison. Seeing no choice in the decision Makayla and her classmates agree and begin year two. Professor Snailime is a year two instructor; his class is intended to teach the students how to nurture and strengthen their bond with their “helpers” they found in book one. When Makayla states that she has two helpers and that they are a dragon and a gargoyle Snailime refuses to believe her, forcing her class to do the “camping” trip once more with Miss Tallen. Returning Makayla has a third helper considered more dangerous by her professor than her previous two. Being sent to the Headmistress once more she is allowed to keep him but must collaborate with a magical world beast expert once she has learned more about the species of imp she has as a helper. Finally getting a day pass into the town Makayla has one goal to find a jewelry store and try and learn more about her pendant. If only she ever had luck on her side, reaching the town she suddenly finds herself face to face with two of her older brothers Caz and Tye, along with Caz’s nemesis Nami. The three teenage boys are arguing about who will be the one to take out Makayla in the tournament. Frankie makes the biggest point, the Grave Digger Academy team needs Makayla and more importantly they need her helpers, they could be the biggest factor in the games.

Just when you think you know what is going to happen next it catches you off guard and surprises you. Will Makayla and the GDA team surprise everyone as the underdogs, or will the doors close forever? I feel like I know these characters and am constantly routing for them to come out on top. Makayla’s ancestry is against her, everything is trying to lead her one way while she rejects it and sees the good in all things. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Grave Digger Academy 3, and discover what secrets are still hiding in the shadow.

It’s Makayla’s second year at the academy. This semester the academy has a little competition to bring funding that would really help the academy. I’m really enjoying these books. Super excited for the next book.

Grave Digger Academy (Grave Digger Academy Book 1) by C.A. King – Review by Ayla Phipps

Grave Digger AcademyGrave Digger Academy by C.A. King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was the first thing I have ever read by C.A. King, and I couldn’t put it down. The world building is amazing I found myself seeing the images in my mind of similar places I have seen. Makayla is a very relatable character not only for physically looking different from her family but in her thinking. Good or bad Makayla had questions that she shouldn’t leading to an interesting first year.
Makayla is the seventh born child in her family, having six older brothers, she was the only one with red hair and bright green eyes. Growing up she was always treated differently from her brothers by her family, her one hope was that she would get into a prestigious academy and would make her parents proud. On the morning of her first day at academy Makayla’s mother gives her a family heirloom, it is said that it hasn’t worked in 3-5 generations or more, the necklace refusing to even stay on her when it was passed to her, only now the clasp as disappeared the moment it was placed on Makayla, surprising both herself and her mother. The biggest fear was not getting accepted into her three choices, which would send her straight to Grave Digger Academy (GDA). Over the years it has been the most neglected profession in the magical world, despite being one of the most crucial jobs. The first lesson she learns is the difference between gravediggers and grave diggers. Gravediggers are the ones who dig the holes for the coffins, while grave diggers are those who prevent the already dead from returning. What started off as a disappointment at being sent to GDA quickly became a bigger mystery. Starting with the well-known urban legend of the seventh born in a family of witches. Immediately Makayla and her friends are invested in the thought of it being possible as the physical attributes of the seventh born were true for Makayla. For the first time she has friends but after an impossible moment she is kept from them, until the end of the semester.
From the first day of classes Makayla had questions about a now illegal practice of magic, seeing glimpses of the long-forgotten academy across the graveyard flickers of light seen inside makes her determined for some answers. She is finally reunited with her friends at the end of the semester, their stories of that night filling in the questions she had only now they had a plan. Knowing a glimpse of her heritage Makayla and her friends leave with missions during the break. Accepting they will be back at Grave Digger Academy soon for year two. Cali is determined to find out more about her mysterious classmates’ pasts. Thomas is to learn more about portals from his parents. Makayla is determined to learn more about her family history. They are to meet on the first day of year two and fill each other in on what they learned during the break. I cannot wait to begin reading Grave Digger Academy 2 and learn more about Makayla’s family history and why her mother kept it secret from her father.
