Maria Turchin is a researcher and advocate focused on human rights. Born in Ukraine, Maria grew up in Brooklyn, New York hearing about her great grandfather’s experience serving as the head of the Red Army’s 47th division field hospital on the first Belarusian front during World War II, and later as the Chief Surgeon of the Soviet sector of occupied Berlin.
Maria holds a BA in Psychology from Arizona State University and a Master of Public Policy and a Master of Social Welfare from UC Berkeley. She currently lives in Marina del Rey.

Death under Palm Trees is the fourth book in A Jack and Frances Mystery Series by Carmen Radtke. This is a Historical Mystery that once you start reading you won’t want to stop till you’ve finished. I’m a huge fan of Historical Mysteries and this one didn’t disappoint that’s for sure. This author has a way of making you feel as if you are right there with the characters. Jack, Frances and Uncle Sal are supposed to be attending a party where they are the guests of honor but when their help is needed in finding some government documents that have come up missing these three jump into action and even disguise themselves to blend in. What will happen when trying to find the missing document it turns into a murder mystery? I highly recommend reading this to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.

Death under Palm Trees: A Jack and Frances 1930s mystery (Jack and Frances mysteries Book 4) by Carmen Radtke. Okay this one was a bit outside my comfort zone but I’m so glad I took the leap. I’m a fan of a book that keeps me guessing and on my toes. This book definitely didn’t disappoint in either of those areas. From page one I was drawn in and completely hooked. Each character is unique and I liked spending time with this set of characters. It’s a well written mystery that definitely had me turning pages as fast as possible to see what would be happening next. It’s well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to see where this author takes readers next. Four big stars!

This is a great book. The main character Frances is so adorable. It keeps your interest in a who dunnit scenario. It kind of reminded me of the game clue. I was pleasantly surprised at the ending.

This was such a fun who-done-it mystery! While I was reading, I felt like I was actually watching a PBS/BBC period show that was set in the 1930s. Frances, Jack and Uncle Sal were supposed to be having a wonderful New Year’s celebration with Frances’ Aunt Mildred. Instead, they end up having to help solve a mystery at her house where classified papers have gone missing. Frances and Jack sign up to be “the help” while they investigate who could have done it. However, during their investigation, the crime ups to murder which puts them on a shorter timeline to solve the mystery. Can they find the papers and uncover who the murderer is before all the guests leave?
I really enjoyed the depth of the characters, the different locations they visited, and how they all worked together to develop a trap in which to catch the killer/thief. The dialogue between the characters was well thought out and drew me in to how their minds were working to solve the mystery. In the end, I was surprised who it was, but looking back it made sense!
This was a very well written book that kept my interest until the very end!

Death under Palm Trees (A Jack and Frances mystery Book 4) by Carmen Radtke was the first book I have read in this series but I will definitely be reading the others very soon! Ms. Radtke gives us such vivid descriptions that it makes her readers feel like they are smack dab in the middle of her story. Filled with suspects, theft, murder, twists and turns, and a plot just crazy enough to keep me guessing until the very end. Ms. Radtke not only gives us a curious plot, and vivid descriptions but she also gives us phenomenal characters in Jack, Frances and Uncle Sal. So if your looking for a great weekend read I highly recommend Death under Palm Trees (A Jack and Frances mystery Book 4) by Carmen Radtke.

Death Under the Palm Trees: A Jack and Frances 1930s mystery by Carmen Radtke is the fourth book in the Jack and Frances Mysteries series. This is the first book I have read in this series, but I enjoyed it despite not having read the previous books. The book is a delightful cozy mystery set in 1930s Nice, France. It had the feel of classic mysteries written by Agatha Christie and others. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. The setting was luxurious and glamourous but with some less than honorable people. I liked the twists in the story and how Jack and Frances interact with each other. The dialogue is witty and clever. I will now read the previous books in this series and look forward to more from this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical cozy mystery novel which had me hooked from page one. Although book four in the ‘A Jack and Frances mysteries’ series, this was the first book I had read and I was able to read it happily as a standalone story. However, I enjoyed it so much that I am now keen to read the previous books as well. Set in Nice, in the French Riviera during 1931, the setting and the era of the Golden Age is wonderfully bought to life by the authors descriptive narrative. The main characters, fiancé’s Jack and Frances and her Uncle Sal are all intriguing characters in their own right and all bring something unique to the story. Instead of being guests of honour at a glitzy New Year’s Eve party as planned, Frances has to swap her evening gown for a maids uniform and Jack poses as a chauffeur, when the hostess needs their discreet help. They then have to work together in solving a theft of some important government documents. Meanwhile Uncle Sal, brings out his ‘Salvatore the Magnificent’ act to keep the guests entertained.
It’s difficult for Jack and Frances to investigate all the suspects as the guests are all enjoying the glamorous setting and nights at the casinos. Then just when they think they have solved the theft a death occurs, under the palm trees. As the pair realise they are now looking for a murderer they must act quickly to prevent the killer striking again. The storyline is enjoyable and the plot has plenty of twists and turns in it, that kept me guessing until the end. I fell in love with the three main characters and found them all very likeable. I felt engaged with them as I followed them in their journey looking for clues and solving the mystery. I look forward to reading future books in this series and am happy to have discovered a new author in Carmen Radtke.

Death under Palm Trees is the 4th book in the Jack and Frances mystery series by Carmen Radtke. It is the first I have read by this author (and the series) and it wasn’t for me. The book was well written, and had a good story line, but I just couldn’t get into it. I struggled to finish the book, and mainly did so, because I wanted to know who the spy was. There were too many characters for me to develop strong feelings about them. Jack, Frances and Uncle Sal are the main characters, and I liked them- but all the people in the house were hard for me to keep straight. I didn’t feel like it grabbed me as much as it should have, being a murder mystery. I did like the old feeling- you could tell it took place in the 30s, and I liked the references to pre war. While this book can be read as a stand alone, I suggest reading the others in the series first. Based on the other reviews, I feel like that would have given me a stronger feeling for them. I did like that the mystery remained until the very end, it wasn’t a book you figured out right from the get go.

After reading the second book in this series I was really looking forward to reading more from this series and I wasn’t disappointed at all – it was such a brilliant read – I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The authors descriptive language was amazing – I really could imagine exactly what I was reading – such vivid detail! I love the characters; they are just so easy to read about and I loved being on this journey with them and because of the authors attention to detail as mentioned before I definitely felt like I was on that journey with them at times. I really like the time setting for this series – so interesting to read about. There were some really good twists and turns to the story too that kept me on the edge of my seat and the pages turning. I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.

Jack and Frances are out on another adventure and will they get to the bottom and find out the mystery and stop the documents going public or will they fail you.
Its New years and they are invited to the party of the year but when there hosts asks for there help will they be able to solve the mystery in time.
This is the first book I have read by this author and loved every word written, the main characters interact brilliantly with each and I have a soft spot for Uncle Sal. The whole story flows brilliantly and has you working with the characters to try and solve the mystery and who is the overall responsible and the twists and turns kept me interested with the story.
If you are a fan of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers then you will enjoy the writing within this story, the setting of the 1930’s has its own special charm and adds to the whole intrigue in the story and recommend this story, I can’t wait to read more stories by this author in the future.

“Death Under Palm Trees: A Jack and Frances 1930s Mystery” by Carmen Radtke is a historical mystery novel. Jack, Frances, and Uncle Sal travel to London to join family for a much needed vacation. As soon as they arrive, they find out that important documents were stolen, and their assistance is needed in determining which guest is a spy. This is book four in the series, but the first that I’ve read, so I greatly appreciated that the first page listed the characters! It can easily be read as a stand-alone novel, but I am eagerly looking forward to reading the first three books. This book has an entertaining and well thought out story line, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing!

This book was the first book that i have read by this author and i enjoyed it! I normally do not read mysteries but i was intrigued by this one and decided to pick it up. It kept me interested throughout the whole story and the main characters are likeable. I liked the cozyness of this novel and the mystery solving element was something that i really liked and i would like to read more books like it. I will be reading more by this author in the future!

Death under Palm Trees by Carmen Radtke is set in the 1930’s and a classic whodunit story. The story is very well written and intertwines the characters is a way that makes you feel like you are there – watching from the outside, looking in on all that is happening. Jack, Frances and Uncle Sal are the main characters and they, unknowingly, are up for a grand adventure at the villa in Nice. There is no shortage of twists and turns throughout the book and the suspects are limited – ending with an intense reveal kept me on the edge of my seat, page after page. I have to admit – I was thrown off on who I thought was the actual villain!! I have not read any other books by Ms. Radtke but I enjoyed her writing and will certainly be picking up more of her works in the future!! This was definitely a fun read and kept me enthralled from the first page.

Oh, a good old time mystery book, is a good way to end the weekend. I love mysteries, Agatha Christie is my favorite, in fact I chose this book because it is historic mystery, you get a feel of the 1930s.
Two detectives want to indulge in their hard earned holiday on new year’s eve abroad a ship when work comes calling. They end up on the wrong side investigating missing documents instead. To make matters worse, there is a murder. Will they be able to solve the mystery before it goes public?
This is the crux of the story. It is a very well written captivating mystery. I loved it.

Frances Palmer, her fiance Jack and her Uncle Sal embark on a planned holiday with friends they recently made on their travel from Austrailia to the UK. Only upon arriving, they are asked to go under cover to help solve a mystery of stolen documents. Soon there after, on the cusp of solving the mystery, there is a murder.
This is the 4th novel on the Jack and Frances series and was my first to pick up. It was an easy read that I could follow along with no prior information. Definitely fun and entertaining.

This fourth installment of A Jack and Frances Mystery was just as exciting and just as much of a cozy good mysterious good time as the previous three before it if not more so! I have really loved following these two along on their adventures through time and all the mysteries they seem to find themselves in. In Death under Palm Trees we find Jack in Frances in Nice, in 1931, with a whole new mystery. I even spotted some characters from a previous book that I loved and returned for a hello so that was fun! The world building will make you feel as if you are right there with them too! The characters are really great but they build over the series so I would recommend that you read the books in order for the best enjoyment of the novels. I can’t wait to see what we will get next!

Let me preface this by saying that I wasn’t planning on indulging in a mystery novel this month. My life has been very, very busy with appointments, and work, so much so that I believed that I was unable to read something that required dedicated attention to detail. I didn’t think putting my sleuth hat on just was in the cards. I am absolutely delighted that I decided to pick up this 1930’s mystery by Carmen Radtke. It was exactly what the doctor ordered.
I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Jack and Frances, their relationship, as well as dear old Uncle Sal and Aunt Mildred. The plot thickens about halfway through the novel, as we discover that though this case started out as one without any casualties, we should have known better. Unfortunately, what started off as a case of the missing documents, turns into a whodunit, much to the groups dismay. For me, I found the writing to pull me in and not let me go until I was lacking sleep to the point, I fell asleep a few times during my lunch break. Jack and Frances Mysteries series will be one I revisit soon, and very much look forward to it. Thank you, Carmen Radtke, for this escape from the real-life complications. Highly recommend.

A clever mystery set in 1930s high society. Plucky Frances joins her beau Jack, plus a few other characters, to assemble the clues to this whodunnit crime. The writing has a comforting cadence to it and it was a pleasure to read. I felt transported into early Hollywood cinema; the writing is perfect for an adaption. The characters are rich, full, and delightful. This mystery will have you guessing as the clues turn up, and the people reveal themselves and their intentions. Death under Palm Trees drew me into Radtke’s lush world straightaway, and had me staying up way too late to discover the end to this delightful tale!

Death under Palm Trees (A Jack and Frances mystery Book 4) by Carmen Radtke. I have loved every book in this series and I believe this is my very favorite. The writing in this series makes you feel as if you are actually with the characters in the places they are. This one takes place in the South of France as Frances and Jack are trying to get some much needed r&r. Its the 1930’s and they are invited to a New Year’s eve party but before they even arrive they are asked to help find some official government papers that have gone missing. The government doesn’t want the fact that these papers are missing to get out so Jack and Frances must work quickly. In the midst of the investigation there is a murder that happens and the two investigators must work even faster to make sure they aren’t the next victims. This is such a fun series with lots of action, tons of mystery and even a few murders. Reminds me a lot of the great Agatha Christie mysteries! Do yourself a favor and read this fun series!

This is the first book I’ve read in the Jack and Frances Mystery Series. This story started off a bit slow. Once I was a few chapters in it grabbed my attention. I enjoyed Jack and Frances’ relationship.
I was eager to try and solve the case as I read the story but had difficulty doing so. I appreciated the list in the beginning of the book that listed the characters. I didn’t expect the person who committed the crime so that was a plus. I did enjoy the setting. Overall it was a decent story.

Who doesn’t like a cozy mystery to curl up to? I am not new to the genre but I am new to the author. This book and its time frame piqued my interest. Setting in the 1930’s it is full of danger, theft, and murder. Ms. Radtke did a wonderful job writing in this time period. I felt that I was right there with the characters in my mind’s eye. Jack, Frances, Uncle Sal, and Aunt Mildred take us to the party where unbeknown to them there are some missing documents. They need to find the answer to where the missing documents went before it goes public. I highly recommend this book. It is a fast read, but make sure you leave enough time because you are not going to want to put it down.

Death Under Palm Trees by Carmen Radtke is a Jack and Frances mystery, book 4 in the series. I haven’t read the first 3, but with how much I enjoyed this book and its wonderful visuals of 1931 culture in Nice, I will be checking them out.
Jack and Frances are supposed to be on a relaxing holiday after their previous endeavors, and brought along Uncle Sal, the former vaudevillian performer. Their trip begins with a stop in London to see Jack’s mother, who reveals she told them she needed help. but really called them away to give them a chance to unwind and enjoy the European countryside. The visuals of the landscape, clothing, and cities drew a wonderful, clear picture in my head.
It has been discovered that Aunt Mildred and Tommy need help finding a spy! Jack and Frances have to take on characters to investigate from different angles and get to know the guests and employees, in addition to having to pretend they don’t know each other. Will their relationship be discovered? This Jack and Frances mystery was a fun book to read, had great visuals, and characters that are strong, smart, relatable and likable across the board. I’ll definitely be checking out the first 3 in this series!

I give Death under Palm Trees: A Jack and Frances 1930s mystery (Jack and Frances mysteries Book 4) by Carmen Radtke, 5 stars.
This is a great historical mystery that honors Agatha Christie. Having never read this author before, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The characters are interesting and quite pleasant. They are all unique and really adept to the sleuthing they are asked to do. The story itself is quite interesting too. Set in the 30s, it is interesting to see the times in the different countries. As an Amercian, I did have a bit of trouble with different terms, but not enough to deter from the story. It is so easy to look them up now anyway. Regardless, I could not put the book down until I finished and I was kept guessing the whole time.
This was a fun, interesting historical cozy mystery with lots of twists and turns. I thought it was over, but then realized I was only halfway through! I highly recommend it and cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

Death under Palm Trees: A Jack and Frances 1930s mystery by Carmen Radtke is the fourth book on the Jack and Frances mysteries. This is a truly enjoyable series and I am enjoying each book that is part of it. With each new book I feel like you connect with the characters even more. It has been great to watch them develop over the course of the four books and it is always so easy to pick right back up with them.
The story was an interesting one. I was pulled into it and couldn’t wait to see how it would all turn out. This is a great book that is worth a read.

I really enjoyed this author’s writing and it was a first time read of their work for me! I for sure will be goin back to read other things they have written. This cozy mystery, was a fun read as well as very well put together. I loved the comfort of the storyline and the characters certainly made it fun to read this!
The mystery was very much more than delightful. I needed a nice cup of hot cocoa to enjoy as I read this in all truth and honesty. Personally I grew up loving the board game named “Clue” and this book was literally the board game for me. As in my mind, I enjoyed playing along the side of our beloved characters to figure out who the murderer was. I was suspicious for the ending, but I can admit I was not a good sleuth and was wrong haha. I loved our characters who were working to solve the mystery under the true investigators noses, and the story time line was really awesome in the sense, as it made things very fun!
The story was very much well put together. It had its moments where the time line fit in so well that I felt I was living in the moments of the characters as they found something out that would and did lead them to the next. The book was a fast read for me, but fun and sweet all in the sense of what I would hope for in a cozy mystery, This one certainly took the cake though! It was very much enjoyed by this reader!
If your looking for a cozy mystery that satisfies your wants and has its own adventurous quirkiness then you need to look no further. It was certainly a fun and delightful read. I had a ray of sunlight providing fun, smiles, enjoyment and even a few gasps along the way! The author did a wonderful job on this book!

This is my first book by this author and I am really in love. I didnt realize the book was part of a series and will definitely be checking out the rest.
This cozy mystery is a perfect read while snuggled up in a blanket drinking hot cocoa.
The story is very well written and captivating. The more I read the more I wanted to know more and see where the story led me.

This is a great murder mystery which will keep you guessing. It is a classic whodunit and the clues will lead you on a quest to discover the truth.
I love the main characters of Frances, Jack and Uncle Sal. The fact that they aren’t professional detectives but are able to go undercover as hired help and work out the clues was great fun to read.
The author does an amazing job of setting the scene of the life of the rich in 1931.
