Death Under Palm Trees is a fourth novel in the Jack and Frances mystery series by Carmen Radtke.
Jack and Frances are supposed to be guests at a New Years party but instead are asked to help in solving the theft of government documents.
With help from others, they go undercover in hopes of catching who stole the documents. In the meantime, there is a murder that needs to be solved.
I have not read the previous novels in this series but this was so much fun to read! I will have to go back and read the previous novels to learn more about the characters and their interaction as well as the other mysteries that they solved.
The time period was fun to go to. It had a Great Gatsby vibe to it.

Death Under Palm Trees by Carmen Radtke is book four the the Jack and Frances mysteries. This book can be read as a standalone without missing too much.
Jack, Frances and Uncle Sal are in Nice attending a party as the guests of honor. Of course, mystery never sleeps though and they are needed to go undercover. Can they solve the theft issue or will they fail to keep their undercover roles?
It was interesting to watch them go undercover while trying to pretend they don’t know each other. It gave an added layer of suspense, wondering if they would be found out. There is a lot of secrets and suspense throughout the story keeping you on your toes. The characters seemed well developed and you can tell a lot of work went to making everything seem authentic. While not my normal read, it was good!

A group of people are chosen to help with a murder that needs to be solved. Taking place in the 1930s there was wonderful attention to detail that made me feel like I was there solving the case with the characters. We get to experience the solving of this case as each character goes undercover. If you like mystery with a nice flare this is a great story to curl up with.

This is a mystery solving story that I enjoyed. This is a new author for me and I look forward to seeing what is next for her. This is a well written story that takes place during the 1930s. Three people are invited as guests to a party but unknown to them their host needs their help to solve a mystery of missing documents. Will they figure out this mystery before it goes public? I enjoyed the characters and what they brought to the story. They pulled me into the story almost from the beginning. It is fast paced in parts and engaging in others. I also enjoyed the growth of the plot throughout the story. This is a great story that I highly recommend.

Death Under Palm Trees is the fourth book in Carmen Radtke’s Jack and Frances mysteries series. It takes place primarily in Nice, where a festive gathering is doubling as a trap to identify a leak of information from the British Government. Jack and Frances are supposed to be enjoying a much-deserved break, after visiting Jack’s mother in London. They enjoy the journey, with wonderful sensory descriptions of the scenery they pass, but before they arrive they learn that their mystery-solving skills will be needed and they make arrangements to take on undercover roles that will enable them to snoop more effectively. I really like how the undercover roles Jack and Frances take on allow us a view of the servants’ lives. We see their routines, the demands they must attend to, the gossip and secrets they are privy to. It’s clearly well-researched! And it’s fun to see them struggling to maintain the façade of being strangers to each other and to Aunt Mildred and Tommy, who they have come to visit. There’s plenty of glamour as well in this book, although even the most glamorous characters seem to have something to hide. There are plenty of secrets to keep readers turning the pages. Is this character acting strange because they’re involved in stealing the secrets, or do they have a secret of their own to hide? I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it gets five stars from me! Now I need to go back and read the rest of the series… I would recommend it to mystery fans, particularly those who like a 1930s setting!

I love this book. It has all of the elements to captivate the reader right from the start. Rowan is on a path of life that is disrupted. Now we get to see generations and legacies challenged. Oh what decision to make!!!! Then the book leaves you at a cliff hanger and I can’t wait for book 2. Characters are very developed and real. Location is real and you can see it clearly in your mind.

Rowan Pendragon and her cousin Davin have found themselves in a bit of a sticky situation, as usual, they have been caught trying to smuggle a few bottles of vodka from the neighbouring realm of Socaria into their homeland of Lochlann after their only way back was blocked and they resorted to travelling through a tunnel for days with nothing but the vodka, only to wake up in a Socarian dungeon. As they slowly wake up and come to the realisation that their predicament is worse than just waking up with a hangover, their captor comes to inform them of the crimes they have permitted and the sentence that they carry, the penalty of death, however, when Rowan reveals their identities, they are moved into more suitable accommodation and invited to join the clan leader and his brother for dinner later on that evening.
It is during the conversation that Rowan learns that the women here are to be seen and not heard and when she agrees to have her future decided by a Summit of the Clans, she makes the case that they should be lenient with her cousin as he is her guard and not actually high in the ranking of their society, they agree, but on the principle that she behaves like a proper Socarian princess would. The only point which rankles Rowan is that she will not be able to create and read a statement of reasoning for what she did and put it before the Summit herself, only a male and one of the ruling party of a Clan can do that, much to her disappointment.
As they leave for the Summit, Rowan reluctantly leaves her cousin behind at the palace where they were being held, at least she knows that one of them will return to their family and tell them the truth of what happened so that they can get closure whatever the decision of the Summit may be. Davin is not in the least happy about the situation and wishes that he could go with her like always and watch her back, however, Rowan insists on it and he acquiesces in the end. As they travel, Rowan gets to know her captors and their family more, as well as the customs, rules and laws which she will have to obey on her journey, however, as she does this, something changes between her and her captor.
Will Rowan be able to face the Summit and take their decision and see it through, what will their decision be and how will it affect her and her captor, will they have to fight for a future they want, or will it become too much of a barrier to them? This is a historical romance with rivalry, hierarchical challenges and family feuds galore which will pull you along as the story progresses as you fight for their future along with them.

It is the year 1883 and Emma Evans is getting ready for work while she reminisces about some of the cases she has worked in the last year as an amateur sleuth, as she checks that she has everything and looking at her split skirt, specifically designed so she can cycle around Chicago with ease, she thinks about the events which started her on this path in life. From the happy occasion of her sister getting married to the opposite of when she was attacked, she looks through the old notebooks she has written her case notes in and how they changed her life forever, as well as those around her.
This included finding out that her Mama was involved in a couple of the cases she was looking at, thefts and smuggling operations mainly and that someone she worked with was also the head of a criminal organisation with fingers in many pies in the city and she stopped some of them in their tracks, this made her a target, but they weren’t the only ones, she also witnessed an attack, which when she tried to stop it, was when she was attacked herself, but later on the culprit returned to try again, however, only succeeded up getting caught and sent down for their crimes. This did lead to Emma helping a local charitable organisation and making a friend for life in the process, while helping them to remain anonymous at the same time.
In the present day, Emma has a job agency after finishing her degree in Business School and is helping other to gain the same qualifications and jobs, as well as being a courier and typist during the day, as well as investigating multiple cases and bringing more specialists onto the team. These include a photographer and a master of disguise whom all extend her original team and help to bring her the professional recognition she deserves, however, her personal life is not as easy, she is struggling to define her feelings for two men she is close to and trying to work out if her past and present are going to collide and rip the team apart at the seams. This is a cozy mystery with clean romantic elements within where tangled threads are smoothed out, secrets revealed and crimes solved with a dash of humour and self discovery thrown in for good measure which will keep you hooked throughout.
Scarlet princess is the First book in a new series taken place after the Lochlann Series. The good news is you can read this without having read the other series. Rowan is an adventurous and interesting character. She attracts danger to her like a magnet. When she gets captured by another territory because she was purchasing something from a smuggler for her sister, she finds out that there is no way home for at least six months due to the weather. She is stuck with her captures. While there she falls for him. I absolutely loved this book. I love historical/fantasy romance. I can’t wait to read the next book.

Scarlet Princess is a sweet fantasy romance book. The descriptive writing style of these authors really enhances the story for me. They have created a world in which I would like to live in. There is drama, danger, history, and adventure. The characters are built up to make you want to be in their world with them. This is Rowan’s story. Rowan is the Scarlet Princess. There is a place for everyone in this story and Rowan knows her place. However, she is in a relationship with someone you would not think would be possible. The story has twists and turns, ups and downs, and ins and outs. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens with Rowan. .

Emma is such an intriguing individual with so much going on for her. It all started with her notebook and crimes. The Characters overall in this book are all exciting with their different personalities and how they all relate and help Emma achieve what it was hard for women to do in those times. As a woman, I praise the work that was done in this book and wish I was in that timeline helping where I could! It’s the stories you wish you were apart of that make the best readings. Her love, mysteries, drama, and friendships all link in with the story told. Kimberly, such a great series. Thank you for this creation! 🙂
Decisions and Possibilities is book two in Kimberly Mullins Notebook Mysteries series. I did not read book 1 and I feel like it should be read first to get a better understanding of the story. With that being said, I really enjoyed this book! I liked the main character Emma and how she pushed for opportunities for women who wouldn’t have normally had them in the 1800s due to it being a mainly male society in terms of working and going to school. I enjoyed the mysteries within the book and if you like historical fiction mixed with mystery then I highly recommend this book and series! I am looking forward to my next read by Kimberly Mullins!

Death Under Palm Trees is the fourth book in the Jack and Frances Mystery series by Carmen Radtke. As with the previous book/s, the story is a cleverly woven whodunnit- an historical murder mystery set in 1931, full of danger, witty banter, lavish details and descriptions, theft, murder and more… We once more follow Jack and Frances- along with Uncle Sal, and Aunt Mildred on their latest ‘adventure’- exploring the glamourous settings with wonderfully charming details, really brings this story to life. I could see this making a wonderful television series- along the lines of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Another fun read.

I can see why this book has such wonderful ratings. It is quite the story and it easily drew me completely into their world. What a great concept this story began with..stealing does have consequences. The characters are developed nicely. I really *felt* for and with Rowan. I was hopeful, shocked and surprised while reading her story. She is a strong female character and I enjoyed watching her deal with her fate. Secondary characters are just a lively as Rowan. While I came to love some….others are surprisingly devious and possibly unlikable.
This is one of the reasons I enjoy YA books. The characters are highly entertaining and the world they live in is well developed. I can not wait for the next in the series!

This story will truly pull at your heartstrings and play to your every emotion. This story truly shows that love discriminates against no one and when its meant to be its meant to be. Richard and Noemie fight through many parallels to be together, and the strength from their love and each other is what moves them forward in the extreme racist south of the 1960s. Noemi is a beautiful girl who is sweet and full spirited. Living with a drunken/abusive father she struggles to protect her younger brother and strives to provide them with a better life. Upon meeting Richard its instant chemistry that is physical, but deeply emotional as well. As we experience their journey to a HEA it becomes a tale that truly sticks with you. The narration of this story was completely amazing and at times it gave me goosebumps.

In this volume of the Notebook Mysteries we follow Emma once again, who is an 18-year-old graduate of business school and an entrepreneur. Emma is persistent, self-sufficient, vivacious, and wants to make lasting change. The case she takes on is much more perilous than the other ones as she is battered and warned away.
Emma Evans is a real Sherlock Holmes, using wit, keen observation skills and a vast amount of cleverness to solve injustices. She carries around a notebook with her at all times in order to set down all her perceptions of the things she takes the time to notice. This helps her do what she desires the most … solving crimes.
I thought the recipes were a wonderful addition and I feel I will truly enjoy making some of them. However I will say this you need to read the first book 1st, because a more detailed character description and a deeper background will give you a better understanding of Emma and everything else going on.
The characters were intricately flesh out and very detailed. I particularly like the historical details during that era that show Emma’s endorsement for women’s rights. Including stepping out of the box society forced her into and fighting for equal pay and equal opportunity for women in the work place. This novel is also socially conscious in that Emma helps women who are abused a fair bit.
If you are looking for a delightful, fun, read with many dramatic escapades all packed into a novel, with historical details look no further. This tale has a very Nancy Drew essence and will entertain the older and younger generations.
This book was absolutely phenomenal! I started reading it with anticipation at this story from the start, and it did not ever disappoint! This princess being taken captive is certainly a surprise due to her demeanor. The story itself made me long for the content included in the remainder of the series. I must admit that I will wait in great anticipation until the next book arrives! I am interested to see how her family plays out their life events at the loss of their princess, and hope they react to her capture. I am also of course anxious to know the actions of her original captors! I’m on edge until the next story!!! I literally did not want to put this amazing book down! Every chapter held my heart in knots!

Scarlet Princess threw me back into my childhood and it was glorious. This book is something I would have read when I was a teenager. Actually to this day as well. It was action filled. A fairy tale with a twist.
I absolutely love the way Princess Rowan was written. She reminded me of Merida from Disney’s Brave. She was witty, sarcastic, strong, an outcast but still nothing got her down. Even after thrust into enemy lands, Socaira, with her life on the line, it never slowed her down.
Theodore, who is Rowans keeper while in Socaira, is very uptight as is all of the people from there but Rowan brings a new light to his life. The couple seem to start falling for each other even though they are supposed to hate each other.
One thing I really loved about this book is it was not love at first sight like a lot of fairy tales, the relationship built up as time went on.
Honestly this book is one of my favorites I have read in 2021! Can’t wait for more!

Notebook Mysteries was added to my collection of Historical Mysteries! The detail in this book really added to the suspense of the cases, not to mention the way all the cases really feed into the plot of the book as well and don’t even get me started on the recipes! Oh, my goodness I am so excited about those. It really gave me a cool way to connect with the book in a way I had not imagined! Emma is easily one of my favorite characters, I love how she handles her cases, her personality, the way she is not afraid to challenge others when it comes to a “woman’s place”. This was the first one I have gotten the chance to read but I will be checking out her book before this one to see more on these characters I have already come to love. All in all I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes the Historical mysteries YA Genre!
Emma Evans is an eighteen-year-old who lives in Chicago in 1883. She gets into business school which is almost impossible for a woman at that time. Emma and her brother-in-law work with the administrator at the business school to allow more women into the school. Emma also loves mysteries and always has her notebook with her to keep all of her notes. She not only does she work with her business but she also works with Pinkerton Detective agency. with the help of an acquaintance. After graduation along with her brother-in-law’s help, Emma talks to the head of the business school to allow more women into the business school as men make more money in other jobs and new companies still need the administrative help. Along with her business mind, Emma likes solving mysteries. She is involved with the Pinkerton Detective agency, but she doesn’t work there full-time. When a detective colleague investigates an old case Emma she becomes friends with a lady that she saved from a brutal beating a few years ago. With this lady’s connections, Emma and her family can take women away from the Chicago area where they have had abusive relationships and put them back in touch with family to begin their new chapters. It really is a great read and I loved every moment.

The support that Noemie discovers from friends is endearing. I love that Richard is not afraid to stand up for Noemie or their love no matter the cost to him. This is a sweet love story with a HEA.

Rowan is a feisty, witty, no nonsense princess who cannot stay out of trouble and feels rules are made to be broken, but one reckless adventure leads her and her cousin in enemy territory. Rowan will question everything she knows as she tries to get out of the mess she’s in. her inner sparky dialog is delightful as she wades through emotions, realization, smoldering affection she didn’t expect with the enemy.
the cliffhanger leaves you breathless and ready for more. fans of fantasy adventure and strong female story leads will love this book!

Scarlet Princess opened up with one of my favorite opening lines of all time, “Death was a hefty price to pay for vodka.” The prologue was not even a page long, and I already knew I was going to love this book. It also has one of my favorite lines of all time later on, “I didn’t want the kind of love that could break you.” Robin & Elle, you have become some of my favorite authors, just like that. Princess Rowan is one of those heroines that you love instantly, even when you know she is gonna pay for what she just said. I had no trouble slipping into this character’s pov. Lord Theo slowly grows on you. For some reason, Jude Law’s face kept coming up as Theo in my head. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, the created world, the characters, and the writing style. It was wonderfully done.

Decisions and Possibilities is a book that keeps things moving, with multiple team members and mysteries joining Emma’s story. Emma has turned 18 since the first book, and has a lot on her plate. With a business, solving mysteries, and a couple of men in her life, there is a lot happening for her!
It can be a bit tough to stay in the mode with the “Dear reader” and “narrator” asides at times, but this book is fast moving, drew a good visual of 1800’s era, while also having strong female leads with solid male support in their endeavors, which is a nice touch.
If you’re interested in a quick YA crime read, with an admirable female lead and twists and turns, you should check this out.
An enthralling story! I could not put this novel down; this story grabbed my attention at the get-go. I devoured this book. I started reading at 1:30 am and could not find the will to stop reading until the last chapter. Went to be at 4:30 am for an 8 am shift; at this point, who needs sleep?
I am always a fan of a heroine who won’t be bullied; Rowan is no exception. She is vocal, brave, resilient, witty and a lover of good vodka. I love the interaction between Rowan and Theo- it is fun, flirty, and downright humorous. That darn cliffhanger has me waiting with bated breath for Book Two. Scarlet Princess is original, entertaining, refreshing, unpredictable, definitely, a must-read.

Notebook Mysteries ~ Decisions and Possibilities by Kimberly Mullins – Review by Barbara Stegall This is the 2nd book in this Historical series – I did not read the first one and feel like I would have enjoyed this one better had I read the first book. This was a well written book with great characters. Not only is the main character Emma is well developed but so are the supporting characters. I enjoyed that Emma solved a number of cases. Oh you can’t miss how she keeps her “case book”!

Decisions and Possibilities is the second novel in the Notebook Mystery series by Kimberly Mullins.
In Chicago 1883, teen Emma Evans is more involved in case and her business than ever before. She gains recognition and a new member in her team.
But the case she is working on is far more dangerous than previous especially when she assaulted and threatened.
And her personal life is just as complex as her professional with her trying to define her feelings for two men in her life.
This was a very fun read. It reminded me alittle of the Stalking Jack the Ripper series.
I have not read the first novel in this series and I look forward to reading Emma’s journey but I really hope there will be a third novel for me to read.
