This was a great 5 star read. This author continues to pull me in with her writing. This is quickly becoming a favorite series of mine. This is 4.5 prequel that has me wanting the next two books now. Phoenix and Aspen have a chance encounter that turns into a steamy fling that could change both their lives forever. You could feel their chemistry coming off the pages. What will happen when Phoenix gets the news? What will they do? I can’t wait to see where things go for these two. All of the characters added a great element to the story. There is adult content and we get a heck of a cliffhanger. 1-click and get started today on this series.
I’m so in love with this series and this author’s writing! This is the beginning of Phoenix and Aspen’s story, which is part of the Hidden Valley Elite Series. Personally, I can’t wait for the next book in the series to find out where their story goes from here. It is possible to read this amazing story as a standalone, but I’d definitely recommend reading the whole series as you get to learn more about Phoenix throughout his family’s books. Also, it’s an incredible young adult series that is enjoyable to read.

I did not expect this to end the way it did, i need the next like right now, please of course .
So much happens in this quick prequel that I had to read it twice to be sure I didn’t miss anything the first time around.
if you liked any of the others from this series then you don’t want to miss this one. And if this is your first of this series I recommend reading the others, not that you need to but you’ll want to because they’re that good!! Can’t wait to get the next one, I need to know what happens!
Cruel Start: A Dark College Bully Romance (Hidden Valley Elite)
Another Hidden Valley Elite Book I blew through because I couldn’t put it down. I am so completely and totally in love and obsessed with this series.
Phoenix is starting college in the fall with his brother Shane, they’re on the football team and life is good for them. Then there is a change for both of the boys and I hope it will be good for them both.
We meet Aspen and I was able to relate to her, trying to do the opposite of her parents and looking forward to college in the fall. Then she meets Phoenix.
I am impatiently waiting for the next book and don’t know if I will survive the wait.

This book is an amusing quick read. It sets you up for the new series and gives you a glimpse of what is to come. It draws you in from the start and doesn’t let you go even when it finishes. This book has me wanting more and more. The writing grips your attention and the story line keeps you turning pages. This book also kinda piggy backs iff of the Elite Series by this author. It deals with the siblings that have been around but not prominent and now they are. If you like everything tied up with a pretty bow then this not the book to read at the moment. You will want to wait till you have time to read the next book as you are left with a cliffhanger. I am normally not a fan of those but this book just spoke to me and I can’t wait to see what happens. This is a must-read for anyone and especially those that have read the Elite Series.

I love it when authors do prequels to their next full story – it’s a great introduction to the characters and for me gives me a deeper understanding of them and also makes you want to read their full story because you need to know what is going to happen and I am so excited to read Aspen and Phoenix’s full story. This was a brilliant read and having met Phoenix in previous books I was already highly anticipating his story and this taster has made me want it even more. I really loved meeting Aspen in this book, she is a nice character who is dealing with lots of stuff at home. I thought her and Phoenix had this genuine connection and I am looking forward to seeing how this relationship develops over the next two books!
Oh man, the drama! This book is about Phoenix and I’m so excited about it. This is a short prequel but my goodness SO much happened and it’s blowing my mind lol. I can’t wait for the next book to know what happens with everything! Highly encourage you to read the other books before this one! Because they’re all so damn good! I can’t get enough of them.
If you are following along, you will know that this book is a prequel and a CRUEL START to the story of Phoenix and Aspen! It is also part of the Hidden Valley Elite, which started following this group of people when they were in high school. Several have now moved onto college but their situations, drama and angst have followed them there.
These two characters have lived in the shadows of their siblings and even their neglectful parents. Phoenix and Aspen are risk takers and care little about the damage they may cause to themselves. However, a little surprise addition begins to change things, but we really don’t know just how much as this story does end on a cliffhanger!
Looking forward to more of their story in Cruel Hate.

4 out of 5 Stars
Once again, Isla Vaughn has given us a great book. I can’t tell you how much I love Isla Vaughn’s writing. As usual it was a very easy and fun book to read. In this book we get to see the beginnings of Aspen and Phoenix. I was unable to put it down because of how much I enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next one.
If you just picked this up without reading the previous books in the series, put this down (momentarily) and read the others (in order) first. These books are absolutely addicting and easy and quick to read but they must be read in order. Just like the previous books in the series, I was pulled in from page one and couldn’t put it down. I have read every book in this series in one sitting. Vaughn is so descriptive it is like you are there living all of this with them. The movie in my head easily plays out while reading this. I consider my self fantastic at casting! This is a must read! Perfect beach read that one could easily finish in one beach trip.
This prequel drew me in right away. Aspen is dealing with so much parent drama that she escapes to the cove to cliff jump. (That would not be relaxing to me.) I’d be terrified. This is where she meets Phoenix, the super hot guy that makes Aspen speechless.
The author is focused on the main characters but the back story and characters are going to hook you as well. I will most definitely read the next two books in the series.

Not even sure where to start. Phoenix, the responsible cousin. Aspen, the new girl in town, the one he can’t seem to take his eyes off of. A one-night stand that took Aspen’s virginity and left her with a parting gift. They don’t really know each other. Not even sure they like each other. But when the stick turns pink again and again, Aspen makes the decision for herself. She will let Phoenix know to make the decision for himself.
When Phoenix finds out, the trauma of his past comes roaring back at him. Phoenix won’t do what his dad did to him. He will be there. He will be a good dad, even if it means risking everything he has worked for his entire life, all the plans he has made. The question is now what about Aspen.
Aspen’s life is in flux. Her parents never stop fighting. They just moved to town because of her parents’ financial situation. Her sister is barely around. All she has is starting college in the fall. Her waitressing job will help cover everything her scholarships won’t. She just needed a little fun in her life. Cliff Diving was her escape. Until she saw him. She knew he was dangerous and a player. She liked the risk and took it. Thinking it was going to be easy to walk away. Now, she can’t. Her life is forever changed but that doesn’t mean his has to be.
Phoenix and Aspen start navigating what this means to each of them, separately and together. Throw in some family drama, some college frustrations, and some planned deception, what could go wrong? I can’t get enough of these characters. I love, love, love this series!!! I never want it to end. I love that all the boys are back together again at Thane. Can’t wait for the next installment. I need my fix. Seriously addicted to all things HVE!!!

This book is a prequel within the series. It introduces Aspen and Phoenix and sets up their story before their duet. It was a quick read and I read it in one sitting but it was good!!
Aspen is new in town. She’s not sticking around long though because she’s off to Thane for college. She meets Phoenix at a party and decides to take a risk other than cliff diving. Phoenix feels a pull toward Aspen and now that she’s pregnant, he’s going to step up unlike his own father. He doesn’t have time for or want a relationship but he’s going to be in his kids life. Having Phoenix involved might be the biggest risk Aspen takes.
This was a fast read but it sets up Aspen and Phoenix’s story very well. I can’t wait to read their duet!
This series just continues to get better and better! Every time I open a new book in this series I fall a little more in love with this author and her ability to tell a story. I love the way the author gave us this teaser for the start of Phoenix and Aspen’s story, and absolutely cannot wait for the rest of the story to come. One night, one choice can change the trajectory of lives, which both Phoenix and Aspen quickly find out. What was supposed to be one night of fun could link them for the rest of their lives, but the fire between these two is undeniably hot. Both have very similar backgrounds, the difference in their future is how they decide to handle things. Act like their parents, or step up and properly take care of their responsibilities.

This was an excellent prequel into the next duet in the Hidden Valley Elite series. When Aspen and Phoenix’s paths cross, neither of them will realize what the lasting impact will be. I started to really warm up to Phoenix in Brutal Nights, and now I can’t wait yo get to know both him and Aspen more.

Cruel Start was such a tease!! Like all of the Hidden Valley Academy books, it hooks its claws into you and doesn’t let go. This installment focuses on Phoenix, who we know from the previous books, and Aspen. Aspen is new to town but has already woven her way into the Elite. Both are about to live their worst nightmare; something they both experienced and planned to avoid like the plague. Anxiously awaiting reading Cruel Hate to see how this all plays out.

Brutal Nights is my favorite book out of the Hidden Valley Elite Series so far!!!
The story opens right where it left off in the first book with a MAJOR cliffhanger. Now, Damon and Skylar will have to face the consequences of their decisions that not only affect others but affect themselves. Both of them will need to explore their very COMPLICATED feelings for each other.
As expected, there are horrible things done and said to Skylar in the aftermath, and her relationship with her best friend, Gia, is in tatters. I kept hoping that Gia would have a hard look at herself and accept her part in everything that happened. No spoilers here, you will have to find that out yourself. With all the complexities that happened, you would think this would make Damon and Skylar stay away from one another, but it only draws them closer. The two come up with another arrangement because the first one worked out so well, but this one has the potential to really allow them to get to know one another and become a real couple.
There was some angst between them and some back and forth, but all in all, they didn’t push each other away. They actually became friends, of course with benefits, but there were some really tender moments between them when they each let their walls down and trusted the other.
I enjoyed seeing the softer side of Damon and discovered that a lot of the things he did were to protect himself from becoming what he perceived his father to be and that impacted his feelings for Skylar.
“The noose tightened around my throat. If I told her how much I cared about her and thought about her constantly, she would gain too much power. And unequal power in a relationship was a very bad thing–it struck a chord that pointed at what my dad held over my mom.” ~DAMON
I was happy to see that Vaughn delved deeper into his complicated relationship with his father and stepmom. There was some real progress made there. I’m glad that Vaughn included that in the book because it played a huge role in Damon’s character.
Skylar was just a great all-around character. I loved her in the first book, but Vaughn showed a more vulnerable part of her, and she just illustrated how loyal she was, especially in regard to Gia. As with Damon, I saw why she felt like she did towards athletes, but she learned you can’t always lump one group of people together. You have to see them as individuals, not what you label them as.
“Damon was becoming a human being rather than just what he represented–an athlete. The thought alone should have made me run away, but it didn’t.” ~SKYLAR
I have loved every book in this series, but this one is my favorite and a 5-star read!!! Vaughn blended together so many components that make a book so good…angst, spice, a little bit of humor in a dark romance, and real emotion. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Cruel Start (Hidden Valley Elite) by Isla Vaughn – Review by Jessica Stone
Like with the previous 5 books in this series, this book had me in a chokehold. This book is about Phoniex, Cole and Damon’s younger cousin, and his love interest Aspen, and it starts the beginning of a new time period that the first books were leading up to, college.
Though I was a bit disappointed with how quickly this book was over, I know that the author has some angsty, dirty drama gracing the pages of the next book for us as always. Isla loves to leave these books on CH but ALWAYS delivers a wonderful climax and conclusion. To say I’m invested in this family and their stories is an understatement.
I find these books fun and easy to read, the continuation from the previous books is wonderful and well thought out, I genuinely enjoy and crave getting to know each and every character more intimately, I highly recommend getting your hands on the first 5 novels and taking a dive into the world this author has created, you will not regret it.

I don’t know how this series can get better and better with each book but it does. You won’t be disappointed in this book it has everything you could want in a romance book. What a way for Isla Vaughn to begin Phoenix and Aspen’s story than with Cruel Start! Although this is just a short novella in the Hidden Valley Elite Series, it packs quite a punch! Isla Vaughn is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors with the way in which she weaves her stories. I feel like I am transported wherever her characters are. And speaking of characters, they are believable, relatable, and surprisingly realistic, even if a tad over the top sometimes. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the undeniable chemistry between Aspen and Phoenix. I cannot wait to see where the rest of their story goes!

Once again I had to read more of her books. Isla Vaughn has become my favorite author. The characters are amazing each story has a different unique love and hard-core drama. I definitely recommend this series to anyone, it is easy to follow and there are a lot of turns and twist in her series. It is hard to choose which character in her series I love the most. So far all of them.

As always, and I will say this every time, please check trigger warnings. Your mental health is more important. This is a short (to me) novella but it wraps up Skylar and Damon’s story. You should really read from the beginning of the series to really get a feel for everyone and the atmosphere. Once again this author really hits with emotions and feelings. They have not let me down yet and I truly love this series. I can not wait to see what the remainder will bring. Review by @michellerenee6590

OMFG!!! This series. So we pick up where we left off. Sky and Damon have been found out and now must deal with the fallout. Damon doesn’t put up with much from Gia when it comes to hurting Sky. Damon tries to figure out his own feelings. When secrets from the past threaten Sky, her mom’s best answer is to leave. Damon will do just about anything to prevent this from happening including asking his father for help.
There is not a dull moment in this book. From the moment we pick the story up to the moment it ends, the author puts you through all the emotions. Damon finds out why Sky is so reluctant to give up on her friendship with Gia, despite all the drama Gia causes. Sky finally remembers the night she got her scar. So many memories. So many emotions!
This addition to the series does not let you down. As more is revealed about Damon, his father, their relationship, Sky, her mom, Sky and Damon, you realize you are no longer just missing your friends when the book ends. It is more like missing your family. The characters make you feel like you are part of their clan, one of them. This is the best series. Maybe ever. Love it.

Geez Gia again is still making mad my props to Isla Vaughn for making and developing characters so well that you’ll feel strong emotion towards them. This is the 4th book of the hidden Valley Elite Series if you haven’t read the first three book I highly suggest you do so and not just because it’ll help you get a better understanding of what’s happening but because they are brilliantly created and amazing reads🥰 you’ll easily binged read them. This one continues with Damon and Skylar stories and the series of unfortunate events following Gia and everyone finding out about them. Get ready for another emotional ride 🤣 Waiting patiently for the next book 😭🥰

Brutal nights is book four in Isla Vaughns Hidden Valley Elite series. This story is part two for Sky and Damon. And let me tell you I am allllll about this couple. This story has some crazy ups and downs. There was so much going on but it was so well written and felt like it flowed perfectly. I am so invested in this series. This is it, the worst thing that could happen for Sky and her mom. So much for the easy Senior year she hoped for, she’s pretty much lost everything. But Damon is determined to keep her safe. Even if it means admitting his feelings. Scary. I loved the ending, it truly brought everything together and satisfied all my questions. I cannot wait to start the next book.

Brutal Days is book three in Isla Vaughns Hidden Valley Elite series. Oooooo man this is messy. And I couldn’t stop reading it. Gia was bleh and I just wanted to smack some sense into her. But I can definitely remember some girls that were just like her in high school. I was obsessed with the chemistry between Sky and Damon, the sneaking around was hot and the slowly falling for each other even though they deny it… but Sky did her friend dirty and that I didn’t care for. Damon is kind of a jerk and by kind of I mean really he is. BUT THAT ENDING. While I definitely called it, it was still a way to end it. Alright girl, I’m hooked, let’s go.

This is the fourth book in the Hidden Valley Elite series and can I just say wow! You don’t have to read the first two books and the prequel in order to read this one, but I definitely would, because you get to see more of the characters and their history. That being said, you do need to read Brutal Days as it’s the start of Damon and Skylar’s story and what a story it is. I really didn’t like the character of Damon until book three and now this one. The way Damon has matured and grown was amazing to watch unfold. I hated seeing what all Sky voluntarily suffered through while trying to avoid the one person that she felt such chemistry with. Will Damon keep pursuing Sky despite her telling him not to? Will her supposed best friend keep hurting her? This was such an amazing story! Isla Vaughn writes realistic characters, who experience drama, angst, jealousy, and real life problems. I can’t wait to read even more.

Brutal Days by Isla Vaughn is Book 3 in the Hidden Valley Elite Series. I do recommend reading the books in order to get the full effect of the story and characters. Brutal Days Follows the story of Damon and Sky. Like the other books in this series it is a High School Academy Bully Romance. If you like Enemies to Lovers this is for you. The tension and chemistry between the characters is so HOTTT and will leave you wanting more. These stories are all around or under two hundred pages and make great quick reads when you are in the mood for spice.
