3.5/5 Stars

I found this YA novel set in a world on the brink of revolution very interesting. The author excellently portrayed the realm of Imperium, vividly portraying its intricate color-caste systems. While the plot kept me engaged, I kept hoping for more character development and relationship building between the characters. The strength of this story lies in its exceptional world-building, allowing readers to envision the world of Imperium. Despite some predictability, my overall experience was enjoyable and I especially liked foundation for the revolution within the story which parallels many contemporary issues in our world today. I look forward to reading more in this series.

This story is a blend of magic, romance, and mystery. Cece, a young necromancer who can talk to the dead, helps her dad solve crimes with her magic. When she goes to drama camp, she meets Zach, a fellow magician and her love interest. But someone is after her for her powers, and she has to find out who before it’s too late.
I enjoyed this story for its realistic characters and engaging plot.

This was such a cute young-adult romance! Mina and Wes became best friends in 5th grade. They both fell in love but were so young and couldn’t predict the ups and downs of life. One day Wes disappeared from Mina’s life and she was left heartbroken. Flash forward to high school, Mina is now living a brand new life. She is wealthy, popular, and her new schools “Queen.” Midyear, her school accepts an unlikely student transfer, Wes! I love Mina and Wes’s relationship. They care about each other deeply and are truly friends before lovers.

This book provides a unique approach to tarot. Unlike the typical guide book, this is more of a journal of the authors own personal journey with tarot. For each card that was pulled in her tarot journey, she wrote a poem, and insights to each. She also encourages readers to form their own understanding of each card and the symbolism within each. Through her writing, she encouraged me to pull out my deck and create my own tarot journal.

This is the first book of the trilogy but not the first in the series. I did not, and don’t think it is necessary to read the book from Alex’s perspective to understand this one but it might fill in some blanks early on. The author starts this off with a trigger warning and I highly suggest you pay attention to that!

That being said, this dark romance has everything you need in a book— romance, betrayal, action, and angst. At 18, Lily is assaulted in the worst way imaginable- she is left with scars and the weight of the trauma but at least she survived. Years later, her tormentor is released from prison and the Shamrocks must find a way to protect her. This brings in the love-triangle between her fiancé, Zeke, and another member in the Shamrocks (don’t want to spoil it!). The characters are complex, and if you’re like me, some may even infuriate you. Looking forward to see how the story unfolds in the next book.

An easy-to-read, sweet story of second-chance romance. While this is the second book in the series, it isn’t necessary to read the first to understand the plot. Annie moved to Marietta after heartbreak with hopes of starting over with a B&B. Craig comes to Marietta for his cousin’s wedding and much needed rest. As the story unfolds, Annie and Craig’s chemistry builds as they figure out their feelings for each other. The characters in this book were relatable and fun.

A great story about love, forgiveness , and redemption. Elle left Sweet Valley six years ago but the horrors that she faced has changed her entirely. After leaving her abusive husband, Elle returns to her hometown just in time to save her grandparents’ ranch. Blake was heartbroken when Elle left town six years ago and honestly feels like life hasn’t gotten much better for him since. Despite their rocky past, Elle and Blake find each other when they most need it and prove that love can heal anything.

This is my first read by this author but it won’t be the last! I enjoyed the flow of the story and the characters were relatable.

Riley and Cole have a very brief history: a soul-changing kiss at a party. Although, Riley wasn’t invited to that party; she crashed it with her mom to rob the house. After Cole kissed Riley, she and her mom quickly left but the memory of the kids remained. When Riley returns to town a year later to live a “normal life,” Cole tells everyone she’s off limits and she quickly becomes his target. This book is fast paced and easy to read. There is a prequel but you do not have to read it to understand the context of the story. Looking forward to the next one!

In this informative and interesting “how to” book, the author shares writing, formatting, and publishing tips from her many years of writing. What I loved about this particular book is that it felt almost like a conversation with the writer. I felt like she was providing decent tips in an easy to navigate and understandable manner. As a history teacher, I am excited to apply her tips and try to right something of my own!

This book was wonderfully written, each twist and turn pulled me into the story even more than before. Dominic and Whitney are interesting, deep characters and their connection through Juliana is a unique element to the story. The story takes us through Dominic journey for revenge after being accused of killing Juliana. Whitney can only help or hurt his attempt…

In this second installment of the series, the author presents a page-turning mystery. The story picks up shortly after the ending of the first book, which I admittedly didn’t get a chance to read yet. However, that did not stop me from understanding the storyline or the characters in book 2. Great story, interesting characters, and a slow building relationship!

In this second book of the series, Tallie is searching for a missing girl but doing so might bring up secrets from Tallies past. While I believe it is possible to read this book as a standalone, having not read the first book, I did feel like I was missing a few details about Tallie and her past. Missing those few details however did not take away from the overall story of the second book nor did it hurt the relatability of the characters. The author did a tremendous job of building relationships between characters while also giving twists and turns that were unpredictable. Great story, looking forward to reading book and more in the series.

The Fifth Daughter of Thorn Ranch by Julia Brewer Daily – Review by Jasmin Marie

The Fifth Daughter of Thorn RanchThe Fifth Daughter of Thorn Ranch by Julia Brewer Daily
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I was absolutely blown away by the breathtaking scenery and the raw emotions and relatability of the characters. Not to mention, the cover is absolutely gorgeous and as a Latina woman, I LOVE to read about a Latina character.

This story is told from two points of view— Emma, the heir to the ranch in Texas, and Josie, Emma’s mom. We also learn a bit about their family history and the expectations of mothers to daughters over the years as the ranch is passed down each generation. Emma soon learns of a cave that leads to another world. As Emma is trapped in this world, Josie, still at the ranch, has no idea where her daughter disappeared to and as with any mother who’s child mysteriously disappears, worry begins to consumer her.

I was captivated by this story — wanting to know more about Emma’s experiences while also feeling for Josie. As I read, I felt such a connection to each character, which were so perfectly written. Highly recommend!

The second installment of this trilogy was just as interesting as the first. Thomas and April’s adventure continues right where it left off in book one. Just as last time, they face challenges along the way, and learn that things don’t always go the way we plan. They soon learn to expect the unexpected and know that as long as they have each other, all will be well. This is my second read from this author, and just as in the first book, his world-building is wonderful and the characters are relatable. As I’m not a math/science person, I did get a little lost in some of the details of the story, but not to the point where I could not enjoy it. Looking forward to book #3!

Can you imagine discovering the complexities of the music/lyrics of the Beatles at the age of 36 and writing a collection of poetry in response? That’s what this author did! Throughout this collection, the author paints vivid imagery of his life and/or emotions in each poem– telling us about his childhood, teenage, and adult experiences. There were times that I was a bit lost in the psychedelic nature of this poetry– maybe I would have understood it a little more if I too were on a different dimension but there many poems that were relatable in the sense of feeling lost in my mind or emotions. Also, the vocabulary is a bit challenging- so keep a dictionary or Google at the ready!

This YA paranormal sequel is such a fun and interesting read! If you’re into books like Harry Potter, you will find the GDA series as equally as intriguing. The main character, Makayla, is entering her 2 year at the academy and once again, finds herself in a bit of trouble. Her school is still considered one of the worst and when Makayla and her friends are nominated for a competition, she has the perfect opportunity to bring a bit of prestige to the school. However, Makayla has to be careful, she is under careful watch from the headmistress, and doesn’t want to disappoint her family.

Once again, the author did a wonderful job of world building and creating interesting and fun characters. If you like magic, action, and/or y.a. novels, this is the book/series for you!
At the age of three, she is placed in the care of a shaman who promises to protect her. When the Spanish come to Azreya’s land, she sees two paths– one of saving her people and another that leads to their end. Can Azreya control her inner beast and convince her people to break from age-old patterns, or will the Aztecs be vanquished by the enemy?

I love love love this author’s work. My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What an incredibly heartwarming, beautiful, and slightly messy love story! I was immediately drawn to this book from the title– the idea of loving someone in the past, and then coming back to fight for that love really pulled me in and the author did not disappoint! The author added layers of detail that both enhanced the story and added to the characters. I felt that the characters were relatable, complex, and engaging- as I read, I NEEDED to know what would happen to them next. I am looking forward to the next book following this juicy love triangle.

Death & Mirrors (All Things Dark & Deadly Book 1) by SF Benson – Review by Jasmin Marie

Death & Mirrors: All Things Dark & Deadly, Book OneDeath & Mirrors: All Things Dark & Deadly, Book One by S.F. Benson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was a great start to this series! While I have never read anything by this author, I was interested in picking up this book based on its description– “a darker, grittier Alice in Wonderland” and I was not disappointed. This fantasy story includes everything you might be looking for — a mirror world, magic, family, loss, danger, adventure, and more! The main character, Evaline, has hopes of becoming a detective but due to a recent tragedy, her father has hopes of her marrying their (older) neighbor. When a stranger asks the family for help, Evaline finds her chance to follow her dreams. Her adventure begins as she is sucked into a different dimension to battle a doctor of death with a goal to stop him from reaching London. The beginning was a bit slow but once the action began, I could not put this down. I am looking forward to reading more in the series.

Levi (The Brothers of Creekside Ranch Book 1) by Edith Mackenzie Review by Jasmin Marie

LeviLevi by Edith Mackenzie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was such a cute book! It reminded me of a sweet romance movie that you might find on TV. This book centers on Levi, a retired Navy Seal, and Bella, a key witness in need of protection. Levi finds the perfect cover for Bella and is “hired” to care for his younger sister after the death of their parents. Levi, Bella, and his siblings quickly form a bond. This great story brought a bit of everything, including suspense and romance. The characters are great and easy to relate to. Levi and Bella help each other heal and grow– which is what love should be about. I am looking forward to reading more from this author and this series!

Leona works her magic and forms three happily ever afters in this book. I loved the characters and the overall theme of this book. Great summer beach read!

Finding Starlight (Quimby Grove Book 1) by Shannon Nikole – Review by Jasmin Marie

Finding Starlight (Quimby Grove #1)Finding Starlight by Shannon Nikole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An excellent debut novel! I absolutely loved the characters. Ellawyn is relatable, kind, and all-around someone I can imagine being friends with. Beckett is charming, thoughtful, and just perfect for Ellawyn. The other characters, though minor, add extra elements of emotion to the story. The small town vibe that makes up Quimby Grove is exactly what I needed from this book! The characters kept my heart in this book, but the drama and twists left my brain wanting more and more. There were a few inconsistencies in the story, hence the 4-star rating, but I am looking forward to reading more about this small town and from this author!

The Wolf’s Shadow (The Lycanthropy Files Book 1) by Cecilia Dominic – Review by Jasmin Marie

The Wolf's Shadow (The Lycanthropy Files #1)The Wolf’s Shadow by Cecilia Dominic
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love a good thriller and I LOVE a good werewolf novel. This story is an excellent combination of both. Although it took a little while for the story to pick up, I was intrigued by the plot line, characters, and the connection between Joana’s research and the mysterious town of Piney Mountain/Crystal Pines. I felt that the descriptions of people and places was just enough without giving too much away about each character. I liked that I wasn’t sure who I should trust and was kept guessing until the very end. Excellent story, I look forward to reading more from this author.

This novel is well written and absolutely thrilling! I could not put this down. With every chapter, the author surprised me with twists and turns. The characters were well developed and interesting. What I liked was that I could not read all of the characters and was surprised throughout the novel by what motivated and guided them. In the end, they might surprise you! I highly recommend this book! It will not disappoint.

I highly recommend this book! I could not put it down! I woke up around midnight and couldn’t sleep, figured I’d read a few pages and slowly drift off. Nope, next thing I know, I’m 80% through and it’s 5 am. The writing was phenomenal, I have never been to Monaco, but felt like I was there. I absolutely loved the chemistry between Morgan and Vandana. This book is the perfect combination of romance and suspense. Plus, I couldn’t help but love the luxuries of yacht-life.

A great start to this series! I enjoyed this writer’s style, I was pulled into this story from the very beginning. Kally and Clark have a forbidden love but when family obligations come into play, their fate is put to the test. I liked Kally and Clark’s chemistry. I thought that both characters were very realistic. This was a well written contemporary romance with plenty of action and plot twists!

Until there was youUntil there was you by G. Colgrove
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this book in an afternoon! Its an incredible, but not basic, romance story! The author did a wonderful job of giving us realistic characters who face twists and turns throughout the story. Jeremy and Regan had such a good connection and I kept wanting to read more. If you like contemporary romance novels, I suggest this book!
