My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a book for YAs aged 12+. It combines paranormal/fantasy, historical fiction, legend, and mythology. The main character Azreya is born marked by a demon. At the age of three, she is placed in the care of a shaman who promises to protect her. When the Spanish come to Azreya’s land, she sees two paths– one of saving her people and another that leads to their end. Can Azreya control her inner beast and convince her people to break from age-old patterns, or will the Aztecs be vanquished by the enemy?

I love love love this author’s work. I can always tell that she just loves writing and this illustrated book is no different! The world-building is amazing, the characters are interesting and relatable, and the illustrations are an added bonus!
