Porter and Midge: Paws and Pastries is a cute children’s book filled with colorful illustrations and engaging rhyming story as we tag along with CJ and Lora along with Porter and Midge with a baking day. This story is cute as the idea of baking dog treats that Porter and Midge can enjoy…but also learning some safety. I loved the different recipes to try and can be a fun day of baking with the little ones.

Porter and Midge and their pups have embarked on a new adventure. This time they are making their pups homemade dog treats. Paws and Pastries was adorable, well written, and well illustrated. I have always enjoyed spoiling my own dogs by making their food and homemade treats, so I’m always on the look out for new recipes to try, which this little book had quite a few of. It also discussed responsibility with their animals, recipes, using quality ingredients, nutrition, and for cooking with adult supervision. I really enjoy these children’s books.

This is such a great book for kids. Showing how they can make homemade treats for dogs. Including the recipes and most importantly a warning on what dogs cannot have is great. The illustrations and rhyming words are excellent in this cute and quick read. I’m looking forward to trying out some of these recipes on my own dog.

I absolutely love the Porter and Midge series and I think this might be one of my favorites. In this installment, we get to hang out with Lora and CJ in the kitchen as they make treats for the doggies. I love the rhyming aspect of this story as well as the illustrations. But I think the thing I love the most is that at the end of the story there are recipes upon recipes for dog-safe treats for you and your littles to try. I love how interactive this book is. I loved this story. It has an easy to read format with a rhyming rhythm. The pictures are beautiful and easy to grab attention. I do believe my favorite part are the little treat recipes in the back. The author makes these such neat books. The story is always informative and entertaining. It always teaches with neat lessons after the story. This is another favorite for families with pets and young children.

Jennie Chen has been active in purpose bred dogs since 2001 earning over 75 titles in conformation, competitive obedience, rally, herding, lure coursing, weight pull, drafting, water rescue, packing, and animal assisted therapy. Her first AKC Champion was a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Ch Dixieland Blazing Maximus, CGC, HIT, SS, SWET, WETT, HIC, WETX, WTXX, WPD, DD, WWDS, RN, CD, THDA, VGS, 2017 GSMDCA Ambassador of the Breed, “Mouse.” Mouse was the first Greater Swiss Mountain Dog to earn any Water Rescue titles, and he was spokesdog for the Keep Austin Dog Friendly trend for many years appearing in magazines, news clips, and serving the community as an animal assisted therapy dog. Keep Austin Dog Friendly was nominated for a Webby Award in 2016.
In addition to Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, she also owns a pride of Lowchen or The Little Lion Dogs. In 2019, she piloted her Lowchen, GCHS Musicbox Got Your Six at Roman Reign “Target” to #1 All-Systems, #1 OH for 2019 and 2020. Target went on to win the Breed at the AKC National Championship in 2019, Westminster in 2020, and Best in Specialty Show in 2021.
Jennie has served on various board and committee positions in the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America, the Lowchen Club of America, as well as regional Newfoundland and Bernese Mountain Dog Clubs. She is a GSMDCA draft judge and weight pull judge.
Giselle Nevada
Originally from the Philippines, Giselle came to the US to attend Wellesley College where she studied Economics. After graduation, she worked in managing risk/compliance teams, specializing in machine learning and more recently, risk policy.
Giselle has owned several mastiffs over the past 20 years, some from reputable breeders and others she rescued as adults. Her experience with rescuing and fostering mastiffs led her to become interested in socialization as a way of preventing future issues. She enjoys working with her dogs and has trained them in various canine sports such as carting, conformation, agility, rally, trick dog, nose work, and more. Her puppy, Porter, is an example of the success of early socialization, having earned multiple performance dog titles and even starred in a movie directed by Marian Yeager called “Match Me If You Can.”
Giselle is an active member of various dog clubs such as the Scentwork ATX Club, Capitol Dog Training Club of Austin, and the Mastiff Club of America. She has lived in Austin for over two decades, and her passion for dogs and socialization continues to inspire her work.

This book was such a great read. I read this with my 10 year old. She really enjoyed it. The pictures was colorful. The detailing was great. The world building and character was well thought of.

The training starts at home so they know their basic commands and then when the time is right, they go to visit new people and places so that they can get used to all the new sights, sounds and smells of the wide world.
Will the two dynamic duos’ complete the training in time for a big event, or will it all be a bit too much for the new arrivals? This is a wonderful book with some excellent tips and activities for anyone bringing a new addition into the family.

This is absolutely a must read for current and future dog owners alike! We have enjoyed other books about Porter and Midge and this is no exception. Both of my kiddos and I enjoyed this wonderful book about the importance of training and socializing puppies. It is especially helpful for my youngest who has a harder time understanding animal needs, and I feel like it assisted him in seeing the bigger picture. The illustrations are not only gorgeous and incredibly detailed, but they do add so much more to the story for readers both young and old. I feel like this would be a marvelous addition to a library, your home, and adoption shelters!

This is a cute little story. I really like this series because it is full of interesting tidbits that help children learn about how to take care of their pets. This is an adorably illustrated book that provides information on dog owner responsibilities at the level of understanding perfect for small children. Older readers can also gain information from this book too. It follows CJ and Lora along with their puppies, Porter and Midge, as they train for the Independence Day Parade. The children need to teach their pups to reamin calm when around new places, new people, and all sorts of new noises. As they go about getting their puppies ready it provides educational information for owning a puppy. It also comes with a check list and real-life adventure ideas to try out.

This book is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. This is a great book for young children who have pets or are a part of a family that is thinking about getting a pet. In this book, CJ and Lora are set to participate in a parade for the 4th of July. They want to bring their dogs, Porter and Midge, respectively, with them for the parade. They are then told all of the things that a dog needs to be able to do, such as not being distracted by new things, not barking excessively, and sitting and behaving well, as well as about the vaccinations that need to be done in order for their dogs to be able to participate. CJ and Lora train their dogs and work to be able to include them in the parade. The illustrations are great, and the book includes a check list of things to help children with training their dogs as well.

The Puppy Adventures of Porter and Midge: Out and About is a part of the Porter and Midge Series. The books in this series are always super informative and cute to read. This one was no different. We love reading this series, especially the older little one. He learns a lot about the responsibility it takes to have dogs. makes him really appreciate our doggos more. This cute short kid’s story is all about puppies and how much they need training and guidance and sometimes it’s not always as easy as it seems. This book was a very well-done book on teaching children on how to care and trin for a puppy. And that puppies need tons of attention and a lot of socialization, training, and patience. This story was very informative in all thing’s puppies, and my kids really enjoyed this book, but of course they also love dogs. Highly recommend this book especially if you have small children and are thinking about getting a puppy.

My son has had issues with dogs but recently has asked us if he can get his own dog. We’ve loved all of these books to help him learn about being a dog owner. This one teaches you how to introduce your dog to new smells, people and sounds so they are not afraid and barking all the time. A cute story I read to my granddaughter, She seemed to really enjoy it.
It teaches children that their dogs need guidance just like they do. If you want the dog to react a certain way in situations you need to train them to do that. By training them they know what you expect of them and will react accordingly.

This is another delightful book following the adventures of Porter and Midge. This time, they need to learn basic training to take part in a parade. As usual, this book takes an important, educational matter relating to dogs and teaches it to children in a fun and entertaining way. Both of my kids loved learning about what is involved in training dogs, and everything they need to learn. The illustrations fit perfectly with the story being told and really help to bring it to life. Each book in this series is just as good as the last and we definitely enjoyed this on in our household.

Out and About is another Porter and Midge story, that I read with my 8 year old. He loves dogs and enjoys reading these stories about him. The dogs owners, Lora and CJ want to take their dogs to a 4th of July parade. But, before they can do that, they need to give the dogs some more training, so they are prepared. The dogs need to learn to remain calm around new people, places, noises and smells. The kids do a great job training their dogs, and giving them toooons of treats. But, their hard work paid off, and they all got to enjoy the parade. The timing of us reading this book was perfect, as we are 4 days off from the 4th of July and attending our own parade. Luckily, we aren’t taking our dog, but with the help of this book, my son knows what to do to prepare for next year.

The Puppy Adventures of Porter and Midge: Out and About (Porter and Midge Children’s Book Series) by Jennie Chen and Giselle Nevada. This series is such a good series about dogs and how responsible owners need to learn how to train their pups. Its all done a level that kids can understand. The pictures are really illustrated well and my 6 year old nephew loved it. CJ and Lora want their dog to be in the local 4th of July parade but because they are puppies and not trained they will have to learn some stuff before they can ride in the parade. Learning ways to train their pups actually works out to be fun for the kids and they have a good time while learning something. These books are so good because not only do kids love them they also learn something from them.

Out and About was a very informative, entertaining, and engaging children’s book. The author introduced the pups, explained that they needed proper training, and proper care, then had their kids/owners put them in many situations to show what a benefit all of it was. The information was presented in a friendly, easy to understand way, and would be a great starting point for any kiddos thinking about getting a dog.

CJ and Lora are doing such a great job at taking care of and training Porter and Midge. They are both so well behaved during their outings. I love that this book shows the importance of getting dogs their vaccinations, and how to try and keep them from being stressed at the vet. In this book they get to meet many new animals and people while preparing to be in the Independence Day parade. The end is so cute with both Porter and Midge just passed out due to having such a long and eventful day, sleepy dogs are the sweetest.
