This book is a great way to introduce young children to the idea that owning and caring for a pet is a big responsibility, and that care should be taken in deciding to get a pet. This book is part of a series of books about Porter and Midge, who are dogs, and their humans Lora and CJ, but it can also be read as a stand-alone without any issues. This is a great book for helping young kids understand why deciding to get a pet shouldn’t be made on a whim, and why what kind of pet you choose is also important. The story is written in rhyming lines, which makes it fun for younger kids. The illustrations are fun to look at as well as bright and colorful. The back of the book also has some pet safety tips for use by young kids around animals. Overall, I would definitely recommend this for any family that has young kids and is considering adding a pet, especially a dog, to their family.

Excellent book to teach children all the responsibilities that come with owning a dog. I forgot myself, how much really goes into owning a dog, so there are some good points to think about and learn about taught in this book. I really like that the author has the children researching everything on their own, giving them a feel of the responsibility they will have to take on when it comes to owning a dog. The note to the parents at the end helps with offering tips and extra knowledge for adults to share with children.

This is another great installment in the Porter and Midge series about teaching kids the responsibilities of pet ownership. While Porter and Midge are dogs, the lessons learned in the book can be applied to any pet looking to be adopted. I love the way Chen and Nevada use rhythm and rhyme to get the kids involved as well as teaching them very important lessons about not only pet ownership, but also communication with parents and respect between parents and children. C.J. and his sister Lora decide that they want a puppy. When they asked their parents they were told that having a dog carried a lot of responsibility. They asked them to research what it means to be a dog owner and then come back and they would discuss it.
I liked this book because I have seen so many people buy their children a pet and then when the newness wears off the dog is left in the yard and ignored. This book will teach children what it takes and then they will know going into it what they need to do.
I have grandchildren and I think they would enjoy this book.

This was a great story to read with both of my kiddos. At 8 and 12 years old, they really enjoy anything animal related, but this one sparked a conversation that I loved. We took turns reading the book allowed to our furry family members and while the felines decided to mosey about, our dog listened intently. The author has such a nice way of incorporating helpful information combined with rhyming and beautiful illustrations together to provide safe (and fun!) tips to play with your pets. This is a must read for the younger ones in your life, and you’ll appreciate that it will entertain you as well!

The author included lots of helpful tips for parents in the back of the book as well. I read this book on my phone with the kindle app and also on my kindle oasis and I can attest that it was so much better to see these pictures in full color rather than the black and white of my oasis.

My favorite part of this book is the artwork of all the dogs and the water. I like that this points out that each dog, like each human is different and all have their different ideas of fun. There are many dog sports to learn about in this book and the at the end of the day spending quality time with your dog is always best. The end has a note to parents on how to teach children dog care, learning something new, empathy etc. I love that the author wants the parents to engage with the child and the dog as well.

This is a sweet children’s book that shows them how to entertain and have fun with their dog. Dogs can get bored quickly, just like kids so what better than to teach the kiddos different ways to keep the dogs busy and have fun. A great book for families with dogs or who think about getting a dog or puppy. The illustrations are wonderful and the sentences are fun. Overall a fun, interactive story that you can read with your kids or your dogs even!

I am a die hard animal lover, I typically choose them over humans half the time. Porter & Midge is an amazing children’s book to help teach children about the love of a dog and the nurturing nature they deserve. The illustrations throughout the book were realistic and the ideas as well as the suggesting provided helped make this book relatable to most. The rhyming is definitely a catchy way to keep it kid-like and interactive, and definitely made me feel like I was reading a Dr. Suess book again! Overall, I highly recommend Porter & Midge as it is a delightful, relatable, endearing read.
