This is the third book in this series, I enjoyed it just as much as the previous two. One of the things I enjoy most about this author is her ability to pull me into her story and keep me engaged until the end. This is a mystery and suspense that kept me guessing what would happen next. Karina and her sister Jilly team up to help find out who set up a friend. When they dig to deep and Karina is forced to call Mike, will he be there? I highly recommend finding out what happens in this story.

International bestselling and award-winning author Ellen Butler presents book three in the Karina Cardinal mystery series! Fans of Melinda Leigh and J.D. Robb, who love the humor of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum will adore this gripping mystery adventure.
The rainbows-and-unicorns period of her friends-to-lovers relationship with Mike Finnegan officially over, Karina Cardinal is taking a tactical retreat. No way is she calling him for rescue from one of her infamous “scrapes.”
Too bad trouble, if not her middle name, is a close relative.
Sadira Manon, friend and colleague of Karina’s sister Jillian, has been dropping way too much cash on designer labels for a middle school teacher. Even one who moonlights as a jewelry store clerk. But when she’s accused of theft, the loose diamond falling out of her purse is enough for the police to sing the song of their people—”Miranda Rights.”
Karina, Jilly, and Silverthorne Security join forces to investigate who’s setting Sadira up to take a fall, and why. They dig up a shady tangle of Russian mob ties and gambling debts. By the time Karina realizes they’ve dug too deep—and maybe a little too far outside the law—Jillian’s in trouble, and the only way out of this particular pot of hot water is to make that phone call…and hope Mike doesn’t let it go to voice mail.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fatal Legislation is the second novel in the Katrina Cardinal mystery series by Ellen Butler. This is my second novel by this author.

While having a heated discussion with Senator Harper, Katrina is shocked and surprised when he falls at her feet dead. What makes matters worse is when she becomes a “person of interest” and find out that someone hacked into his pacemaker.

Katrina starts her own investigation to discover who would want the senator dead and why.

With this being my first political mystery, I highly enjoyed it. I love Katrina and how she handles situations.

The novel was well paced and kept me hooked. I may start to read more in this genre.

I hope there is more to this series.

I’m happy with this novel being my final read of the year and highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a quick mystery to read.

This book stars with a bang. I love a really good mystery and this book delivers. This second installment in the Karina Cardinal series is just as good as the second. We see characters from the first novel and we are introduced to characters who are specific to this novel.
When Karina becomes the main suspect in the murder of a senator, she launches into her own Nancy Drew style of investigation to figure out who could be behind the murder of a Washington Senator and why they are trying to frame her. I won’t go into to many more details as I feel it will give away too much of the book, but if you are fans of John Grisham, and Nancy Drew/Hardy Brothers investigation, you will love this book.

When someone drops dead right in front of her, Karina just can’t help jumping in with both feet to solve the mystery and get some answers. These FBI and police should just thank their lucky stars she’s so snoopy, because she really is helpful. I mean, she does land herself in some trouble along the way, and she makes me laugh. This was fast paced and I didnt want to put it down. Such a fun read. I really got lost in the story.

A full length novel filled with suspense and shenanigans.

Karina Cardinal is tossed right into trouble again. But this time she did not go looking for it. It just seems to follow her. This time she definitely was not looking for trouble. She was just looking for answers. In a friendly chat with the Senator. When all at once he collapses, falls just that fast. Her boyfriend works for the FBI, he is out of town when she tries to contact him. Mike Finnegan is suddenly sent on a new case. His person of interest, Karina Cardinal?

Ellen Butler has continued her fantastic mystery. Karina Cardinal is her main character, as she brings trouble a knocking. New characters means new adventures. This book does not disappoint. I had to even laugh, with all the trouble lurking, out pops the laughter. Totally unexpected! This story will get you boarding the political rollercoaster. I really enjoyed this story. I know you will as well. Please bring on another Ellen Butler!

By Ellen Butler

The author did an amazing job pulling me into this book of suspense, mystery, danger, and funny antics. I loved reading this story, once I started I couldn’t put it down till I found out what happened. This book really makes you think…could this really happen? Why can’t Karina seem to keep herself out of trouble? I love that her character is so inquisitive, but she also listens to advice most of the time anyway. This is definitely a book you won’t want to miss!! This book can be read as a standalone, but my suggestion is to read the first book because it is awesome, but also because there are some references to things that happened in the first book and you will have a better knowledge of some of the characters. I highly recommend this book, it is a great read!

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fatal Legislation: A Novel: Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 2 by Ellen Butler was a fast pace, intriguing mystery, that had me hooked from start to finish.

Not my first read by this author or in this series. We are again tossed into an unusual mystery were our MC is once again in the wrong place at the wrong or right time. Man she really know how to get herself in a pickle. Before I get to far into this review, this book, though can be read as a standalone, is part of a continuation series, and I highly suggest reading the first book, especially if you want more backgrounds on our MC and her sexy FBI lover.

Like the last book, the writing is on point, the pace is smooth and cohesive. The fast pacing gives the book a senise of paince, and really puts our MC in the hot seat. The murder plot is also a bit of a test for our power couple and, for me, I like that added element. But I do hope that, moving forward with this series, that Karina’s doesn’t always fall into these situations (Not so much the mysteries, but how she’s finder herself involved in them). Once it fine, twice.. okay.. but a third.. you can only do the same thing so many times. In all, that’s my only criticism with this book, and this series.

Overall this action packed thriller was a fun read, and I loved the complex multi layered plot. The ending was a shocker, but the clues are there, so pay attention. With that said, I’m going to leave you with my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval.

Happy Reading

I have to admit that this is sort of a new genre for me. I really am not into like political murder mysteries and so I was pleasantly surprised when I got sucked into this book. I really like the way that the author weaves the drama into the story and you find yourself at the edge of your seat. I really didn’t want to put this book down.

I found myself really gripping the edge of my seat as Karina’s character helped to unfold the mystery and drama and solve the case. I really was eager just to turn the next page to see just what would happen next. I have to admit that the undertone of the romance between Karina and Mike really just adds to the drama. I don’t normally like political dramas like this but I find that I really did enjoy this book and would like to read more from this author. I find that it is a good thing to try and broaden your reading .

I give Fatal Legislation: A Novel: Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 2 by Ellen Butler
*This review may contain spoilers from book one.*

Karina is back and finding herself in the middle of it again. When one of the senators opposes a bill she is lobbying, she wants to know why. While talking to him outside, he literally dies right in front of her. The FBI thinks it was murder and that she could be a suspect. Apparently someone else thinks she may know something as her house is broken into. Not one to ignore her curiosity, Karina decides to find out more about the things that have been happening. Who is behind it? For what purpose? How far does it go?

This is a good political suspense/mystery book. Karina is the main character again, now with her current boyfriend, Mike. She is getting into trouble and needs the help of her friends. It is interesting to see the relationships evolve from book one. Quite a few of them play bigger roles in this book. The story itself involves the political end of things much more than the first one. I didn’t realize that and it took me a little bit to get into it. But the action really speaks for itself and the further you get, the more compelling it is. There are many things that happen that I didn’t see coming.

If you like political suspense/mystery books, I highly recommend this. I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to read book one first, but you will understand this one better if you do.

Fatal Legislation: A Novel: Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 2Fatal Legislation: A Novel: Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 2 by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fatal Legislation is the second book in Ellen Butler’s Karina Cardinal Mystery series. Yet again, Karina ends up being swept up in a mystery that her inquisitive mind won’t let her leave alone.
I like the variety in the Karina Cardinal Mysteries. The first book, Isabella’s Painting, focused on art theft and this book focuses on political assassination. With Karina and other supporting characters to connect the stories, there is a sense of cohesion but the story has a very different feel to it.
Fatal Legislation kept me on my toes. There was always something new coming up – another twist in the story. Whenever Karina starts to piece things together, something changes or comes up. It’s also interesting to see the strain it puts on Mike and Karina’s relationship as he struggles to balance his personal relationship with her and his responsibilities in the investigation.
I wouldn’t normally go for political thrillers, but having met Karina in Isabella’s Painting I was eager to read this and found myself really enjoying it. It gives a fascinating insight into American politics and is suspenseful and enjoyable. For me, it’s a five star read.
The story follows on from Isabella’s Painting, and I would recommend reading that book first (it’s also very good!). That said, Butler does a good job of setting the scene and reminding the reader of anything they need to know so if you’re only really after a political thriller you could come in at this book.

Fatal Legislation was a thrilling 5 star read and the second book in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series. We continue with KC’s story, she is moving forward in a new relationship with her college friend Mike, who also happens to be an FBI agent.

While visiting with a Senator she finds herself doing CPR trying to save his life. After finding out that he passed away, she is in shock. When Mike shows up at her place he informs her that she is a “person of interest” in the investigation of the Senator’s death.

Why would she be considered a suspect? How can she clear her name? Will Mike be able to help her or will his job take precedence over their relationship?

This was an edge of your seat thriller. I couldn’t wait to see what was coming next with all the twist and turns. All of the secondary characters were great, they added a good element to the story. If you’re looking for a good murder mystery with suspense, drama and so much more this is the book for you. Ellen Butler has done a great job of pulling you in with her writing. I look forward to reading more in this series.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A great read about law. Karina Cardinal survived the events of the last novel and has a new job lobbying for health bills. When a prominent senator drops down dead in front of her, Karina’s world is turned upside down once again. With Mike on her heels from the FBI, she struggles to know who to trust. Trusting her instincts, she enters a world of cloak and dagger and secrets close to the chest as she tries to discover the truth behind the senators death. Can she find out the truth before its too late?
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns. Well developed characters like Karina standing up for herself and doing whats right under stress and more to Mike as he struggles with his feelings while on the job. Great cast of supporting characters like Latesha as a fun friend or Rodrigo sophisticated gentleman or even the kindly Senator Harper.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like with the coffee shop with Latesha as something comforting and familiar or the lunch place busy and full of life and people. Or in particular, the funeral scenes `with the use of colour with deep blacks contrasting with the flowers perfectly. with the sense of a well loved man in the place full of people with the choir and the Tyger for an excellent use of sound and making his death even more emotive.
or the combination of realism with the hotel lobby and bizarre crowns gold against the white and black beautifully written. Once again, the use of suspense was wonderfully written, drawn out to perfection to keep you reading to uncover the mystery. Fast paced action and high stakes make for a captivating read. Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fatal Legislation a Karina Cardinal Mystery is the second and brilliant book in the series by Ellen Butler. I enjoyed the first book but loved this one. Ellen has come up with a story that is full of danger and mystery, drama and suspense, intrigue and politics and has done a wonderful job of weaving it all together and making it into a gripping read. Throw in the FBI, an assassin, secret operatives and Karina Cardinal and you have a compelling murder mystery and an unpredictable story that you cannot put down. So much so I read it in one sitting. It has a fast pace read but it flows smoothly and is so, so, easy to read and get lost in. Karina Cardinal cracks me up. The situations she finds herself in sometimes boggles the mind. Her trusty side kick had me laughing out loud and I hope he continues in further stories. Karina is smart and hardworking, sassy and independent and once she is on to something she won’t let go and her boyfriend is determined she is going to give him a heart attack. Ellen is a great storyteller, leaving us hanging on every word and guessing the whole way through to the end. Trust me Ellen is one author that everyone should put on their read list. I cannot wait for the next Karina installment.

This author has quickly become a favorite of mine. I Loved the first of this series and this one was no different. Karina is absolutely one of my favorite female leads, there’s no doubt…and her relationship and interaction with Mike is awesome.

I was on the edge of my seat the entire book, this author wastes no time getting started in her stories and I loved that some of the characters from the last book were still right in the thick of things, right down to Mrs. Thundermuffin LOL

I am totally addicted to this series and can not wait for more, Karina has me shaking my head more often than not in these stories but I just know I would love to be her friend and love to be right there with her in her quests to find the truth.

Highly recommend, but read these in order…This one could possibly be considered a stand alone..But dont, I promise, you need to read them both! 🙂

The story Fatal Legislation: A Novel: Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 2 by Ellen Butler is a political thriller that I loved reading. It constantly had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I found myself glued to the pages trying to put together the clues. I loved reading about the character of Karina Cardinal. She is a Capitol Hill lobbyist. She is a woman who is intelligent, independent, and strong. She is someone that once she becomes curious about a situation is determined to get to the truth. In this story, what starts as the tragic death of a senator soon turns into an investigation that has her labeled a “person of interest.” Plowing ahead and following clues will Karina find out the truth behind the Senator’s death? She has to play politics and follow the money trail. When that trail leads to more murders the question arises, how much danger is Karina in? Read this book to find out what happens. This story is suspenseful and had me at times holding my breath. I didn’t want to put the book down until I had read the final page. Mike Finnegan is also a wonderful character to read about. He was introduced in the first book in the series and I like that he is now her boyfriend. There are many other characters that you read about. There are those who help Karina and then there are those who have their own agenda and will do anything necessary to make sure that their agenda succeeds. I enjoyed reading about the part that each one plays and also their interactions with Karina. This is the second book in a series and one that I would recommend reading.

Isabella's Painting (Karina Cardinal Mystery #1)Isabella’s Painting by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Isabella’s Painting was a great 5 star read and the first book in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series.

Karina is a lawyer who discovers something mysterious when she is attending a party with her boyfriend at his parents home. Of course her curiosity peaks and she does some investigating, could she have seen a piece of artwork that was part of a historical unsolved robbery?

I’d gotten it into my head that I would crack a case that neither the FBI, nor highly skilled art detectives, nor investigative reporters had done in the past twenty-eight years. How silly of me

Will Karina’s curiosity bring danger to her doorstep? Will she be able to solve the mystery?

We meet several great secondary characters that added a great element to the story, my favorite was Molly. I really liked Karina, she had me LOL so many times, she was very smart and independent. I really like a book that has me guessing throughout the story, I was thrown off when it twisted in a completely different direction on me. This is my first read from Ellen and I was pulled right in by her writing. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I must admit I like a good mystery book once in a while. This was a great find as this is my first book by this author. The book has just the right amount of drama and really grabs the reader from page one. I was at the edge of my seat awaiting to find out what would happen next.

I found that Karina’s character was very realistic. I found myself being transported into the book as she delves into the museum heist mystery. The drama between her and Patrick just adds to the drama in the book. The whole way that things unfold along with the darknet auction to the mob connections I just couldn’t put this book down. I found my adrenaline running as I am sure Karina’s would be as she followed each lead to the heist. I look forward to reading more not only from this series but also this author.

Isabella's Painting (Karina Cardinal Mystery #1)Isabella’s Painting by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Isabella’s Painting is the first novel in the Karina Cardinal mystery series by Ellen Butler. This is my first novel by this author.

Instead of relaxing at home watching Netflix, Karina Cardinal is getting dressed to attend her boyfriend Patrick Dunne parent’s holiday party.

While there, she notices Patrick’s dad may be up to something that includes the stolen artwork that was taken from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum years before.

The FBI was unable to solve and locate the paintings but with Karina’s new information it’s possible they may have been found.

I have not read a cozy mystery in over a year and have been wanting to. Reading this novel made me remember how much fun and entertaining they are.

While Karina is not a detective, she is really smart and is able to put clues together. And while working with a friend that is an FBI agent, sparks may fly.

The author did a great job combining an actual event within the story of this novel. I even did some research while reading and discovered more information about the heist which made it all the more to read.

I look forward to the next book in the series as well as the cover. The cover caught my eye before I read the summary.

Ellen Butler was a new author to me when I picked up Isabellas Painting. It was a late night impulse snag and I am so glad that I grabbed it! I am hooked! This was such a fun read. I got zero sleep but it was so worth it.

So there is a lot going on in this novel but I am going to try to just tease you a tad with some details… the good stuff you have to read for yourself. Trust me it will be so well worth your time. I have to say this is one of those books I will want to add to my re-read pile!

Karina Cardinal seemingly has it all and has it all together. She is a wonderful lawyer. She has the perfect relationship with a handsome man named Patrick. So perfect that things may just be ready to progress to bigger steps. Basically everything is going peachy king. Until…

Sore feet at the family Christmas party forces Karina to take a rest in a room with beautiful art, art that stands out. Art that she wasn’t supposed to see. This makes her start asking questions and things get really interesting to say the least. I loved this one and I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series!

Let’s just say this is an intense suspense novel. Filled with romance, trust issues, a 28 year old art heist and the mafia?

Karina Cardinal is a strong woman who knows what she wants, and what she does not. Trust for her is a must. When she sees something she should not. She steps up and runs right into danger. But does that stop her? Fighting with her mind, boyfriend and his father, things are about to get intense. Remember it’s not over until THE END!

Patrick Dunne is of money. He also has been hurt many times because of it. Hiding his fortune he is out to find his true love. But his trust issues get in the way. He loves Karina, and pushes her too far. Will he keep the girl?

Ellen Butler has done her homework with this story. Not only does she bring a true case into her story. She has history to back up her story. I love this story! She drew me in and suckered punch me half way through the story. Just as I thought I knew what happened, I was wrong. This book is a real page turner. I could not put it down. A great read about doing the right thing. Karina Cardinal is a lawyer in love with her boyfriend Patrick. His family invite her to their Christmas Party and she has a great time. But odd events happen in Martin’s library that fuel fire to her curiosity. When she discovers the secret, she is dragged into an uncertain world of art and smoke and shadows and perhaps she shouldn’t have looked after all.
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns that I just couldn’t put down. Well developed characters like Karina loving and kind but also standing up for herself or the eccentric Molly or mysterious Martin. I loved the use of suspense drawn out to perfection that kept you reading to find out with Karina. I loved the use of setting with the large house and tunnel rooms and hidden places for that sense of mysery but the colourful art contrasting with beautifully. Or the visual detail of shops and coffee places for a busy vibrant city. High stakes and fast paced action made for a captivating read with a love of art throughout for a lovely touch.Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.

Isabella’s Painting: A Notorious Art Heist Mystery (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 1) by Ellen Butler – Review by Erica Fish

Isabella's Painting (Karina Cardinal Mystery #1)Isabella’s Painting by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Isabella’s Painting is a magnificent mystery/thriller book by Ellen Butler. Butler has done her research when it comes to the underground black market of stolen items. This story gripped me from the very first paragraph until the last word. Butler has twists and turns that made me turn the page quickly and then there were ones that I was hesitant to turn. Butler has fully developed characters that I felt like I could be there in the story with them. This story is about Karina and what she sees and hears by accident. There was a heist of paintings from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Karina believes she has seen one and overhears about the painting as well. She is not sure who she can trust. Will Karina get help with what she saw or will she turn the other way? Does she understand what she has gotten herself into?
