In school Amaleigha writes a penpal in Ukraine. Vova ends up being Amaleigha’s penpal and friend. Vova ends up telling Amaleigha that Ukraine is going to war with Russia. Amaleigha’s teacher teaches them about Ukraine because of their penpals. They make bread, do a puppet show, and celebrate Christmas. They also raise money to help with the war for the Ukraine’s.

I really found this book to be quit a good tool to help a younger child understand about things in the world. I like how the author was able to take a complex subject and make it simplified so that kids can understand. This was a very well written story and I highly recommend it for kids. The way that the author takes a scary subject and brings it in a form that is not too scary for kids is really good. I wish my children were younger as I would definitely have them read this book. The author has a very unique way to bring this subject to the younger audience.

I love that Janice is selflessly giving the proceeds from this book to support Ukraine families who might have lost their homes or become refugees in other countries.
Amaleigha Makes a New Friend is a sweet read for all ages not just kids. I read this book with my grandbabies, and they loved it. It was fun and engaging and left the kids wanting more.
It is full of wonderful and colourful drawings that really bring the story to life. It is a book aged for kids 4 – 8 who will be delighted as they go on this adventure with Amaleigha. It is an inspiration to the kids who read it.
Amaleigha has such a big heart & wants to help others especially her new pen pal in the Ukraine. It was interesting to learn a little about the Ukraine and a war that threatens.

This is such a touching and relevant story that really engages any reader. I honestly think that I became more emotional and invested in this story than my kids. The way the author navigates such a touch and yet topical subject matter is brilliant. It was written in a way that made it understandable and educational for children but was also still interesting for them.
This whole series has been great. Each book has touched on a different topic but each book has been amazing to read. I think this one is definitely my favourite so far and our whole household is waiting for the next one.

A really informational way of discussing the changing world climate with children. This is the story of Amaleigha, an American 3rd grader, who gets a Ukrainian pen pal, Vova, through her teacher. During the course of the relationship, they learn about each other and their cultures; however, during this time the Russia-Ukraine war breaks out and suddenly Amaleigha is worried about her friend. Through this picture book, we see how differences can be made and we are given the opportunity to see these types of situations through the eyes of children…which is something we sometimes need to be reminded of. This was well done and the topic matter was handled delicately and very well. This is a great book to read to your littles (or students) to show them that differences can be made, no matter how small.

The Magic Carousel (The Brass Ring Series Book 1) by K.L. Small

The Magic Carousel is the first book in The Brass Ring Series and is a kids Fantasy that I think any age can enjoy. This is a preteen story that touches on many different subjects like bullying, family issues, health issues, then there’s drama, magic and so much more. Russell is a ten year old who has had life challenges and is being bullied add to that his grandfather is moving in with them as he’s not in good health. When grandpa ends up in the hospital he gives Russell something very precious. Get ready to be taken on quite the magical adventure and enjoy the wonderfully colorful illustrations that bring the story to life. I highly recommend reading this book and look forward to reading more from this Author.

Another book that I found to love. It was cool to find to a book that gave bite-size facts about Ukraine to children while they read about pen pals and letter writing. I remember doing that when I was younger. It was fascinating and so very exciting to get letters. I love reading Ameleigha books when they come out. My granddaughter was here when I got this out to read and she thought this the most exciting thing we did all day yesterday. She’s a bookworm like her Nana. She asked so many questions. She loves to learn and she got to learn about a new culture and other children by reading a story with her Nana. I lover storytime and these books are perfect because they develop learning. Ameleigha is always teaching such wonderful and beautiful ideas that can help strengthen the world to help children develop their own creativity. It’s a must read to share with the children in your life.

Oh my heart 💜 😢
This book deals with the heartbreaking life event of saying goodbye to a beloved pet. It was so well and sensitively written. It’s a very emotional time losing a pet and it can be difficult to find the words and this story would be a great way to broach the subject with young children and to help explain the process and get the discussion started. A wonderful addition to any home or classroom library. Highly recommend.

Sometimes when you dream, it takes a while for it to become a reality. I have wanted to write books since I was a little girl and fell in love with my hometown library. I read books at school, at home, in bed, and even in the bathtub. I just couldn’t get enough of faraway places, brave heroes and heroines, and the experience of getting lost in a new and amazing adventure in each book. Through the years, I became the owner of a preschool, a public librarian, a school librarian, and a children’s yoga teacher but no matter what I did I shared stories with children. Finally, at age 62, I published my first book but I know it won’t be my last.

Oscar and Emmy Lose a Friend by Terri Sabol is a poignant story about dealing with the loss of a furry friend and making difficult choices. Covering topics such as rescue pets, stray animals, end of life decisions, euthanasia, crossing the rainbow bridge, saying goodbye, family, friendship, compassion, loss, and emotion- the story comes with really cute illustrations that help to build and guide the storyline.
It’s a sad story but with an important message for all ages. Having lost several furever friends and furever family members, the details in this book hit close to home. It’s never easy to say goodbye- and this book helps explain things in an educational but understanding way.
The story is told through Oscar and Emmy, who are cat siblings, their human family, and their stray cat friend Shadow, whose health has been on the decline of late. What happens when the family take Shadow to the Vet? Some decisions are extremely important, but not the easiest to make. This story helps to explain why.

I instantly fell in love with this story! The adventures took me back to my childhood when anything was possible and I was on the edge of my seat for each of Russell’s adventures! What would happen and how would he get through this one?! I particularly loved the historical aspect of each adventure and also the family sub-plot. I may have yelled at a couple of characters, but that’s a sign of an engaging story in my book! I can’t wait to read more in this series!

Oscar and Emmy Lose a Friend is a very touching story that helps younger kids learn about having to put a pet to sleep. This story takes you through the whole process of finding out whether a pet is ill to the final stages if the pet can’t get better. With clear language and beautifully drawn illustrations, this can help many families better explain things to younger children. The author has done a wonderful job writing on such a tough subject! I’m glad I picked this book up as we have a sick pet currently and though we hope to avoid putting it to sleep, this will help my family if we have to face that tough choice. For anyone having to go through this hard life decision, this is definitely a book you want to have.

This book was a very entertaining and interesting read. its about a boy named Russell who wants to be a firefighter when he grows up but doesn’t believe he’s brave enough to do it. with this magic of the carousel and his grandpa’s tales, Russell goes on an adventure he sees different places, learns new skills and in the grand of it all learns to be brave. This book was wonderfully written and was so amazing about how no matter what you can be brave deep down too. I felt like I was swept away with Russell and his adventure. This was a surprisingly amazing and well done.

This was a very magical book. While it touched on very real things (medical issues, alcoholism, bullying) the author does an amazing job of tying the issues into the story and making it work in a way that young people can read and relate to, and understand. I, at 41, enjoyed the story. It was very well written and I look forward to reading more by this author.

This story is emotional. Even is you have never owned a pet, most people know what it means to put an animal to sleep. Our pets often have become part of the family. This story goes through the process of doing just that. It walks through from diagnosis through to sending them off to the Rainbow Bridge. I found the story does a very nice job of explaining this in a family friendly way so that it can be read to children. This may help to answer questions and possibly put some worries at ease, Either way, it will help parents to talk with their children when that time comes that a fur baby has to be put to sleep. This book is a gentle way of explaining the process. I think it is a definite must for the library of any parents of younger ones with pets.

Russell feels like his life is falling apart. His former best friend is bullying him, his Dad is turning to alcohol, and his mom is making him take his grandfather to the local park everyday. What Russell doesn’t realize is that his grandfather has a special connection to the carousel. With a magic brass ring and the carousel, Russell’s grandfather can experience adventures you can only dream of. Some questions I can imagine kids asking as they read the book are, Where will they go next? How does Russell’s grandfather know which carousel horse to pic for these wild adventures?
This book would have been perfect for reading with my kids when they were elementary age. Although my kids are a bit older these days, I still think they would love it!

Lilly is a young girl who is ready to head back to school but forgets her best friend, her stuffed bunny Hun Bun. Lilly is nervous with her “heebie-jeebies” on what to do and how she can go about her day at school without her stuffed bunny, Hun Bun.

With different ways to help Lilly when she feels this way, Lilly learns from the school nurse and a new friend, Noah, how to cope when her “heebie-jeebies” come back and make her feel nervous all over again.

This is a beautifully illustrated book that is a great teaching story as well. I loved how the author explained in the story to Lilly the different ideas on how to overcome her worries. While this book -is for ages 7-10, I believe this is a great story for all ages, I even learned some different ways to help me with my worries too. Wonderful book.

I appreciated this is a direct continuation of Oscar and Emmy Gain a Friend, which makes the pairing logical for helping children acquire, and sadly, lose, pets. This book continues, as with the first, to depict the cats and playful and cheerful animals and characters. This book has a great description of what a vet may do, which helps with social stories for young kids that have to take their pet to the vet, written in language they can understand, and teaching proper terms such as euthanasia (yes, children can understand big words). For a sensitive topic, the authors handle it well and this book provides a bridge to discuss pet loss with young children.

The Magic Carousel is a fast-paced, exciting read! The target audience is 9-12 year olds, but my 39-year-old self absolutely loved it! It has a little bit of sadness with the sickness of Rusty’s grandpa, but it also has excitement, adventure, and magic! K. L. Small delivers unbelievably realistic characters who not only have flaws, but also struggle with different things in life. This book not only creates a magical world full of adventure, but also touches on real-world topics such as bullying, alcoholism, and health issues. This book reminded me that, despite all the negative things around me, there is still magic and excitement all around as well; I just have to look closer. The magical world beyond the carousel was so vividly detailed and explanatory that I felt like I was right alongside Rusty on his exploits. I can’t wait to read more books by K. L. Small!

This is a fantastic book that explains illness and euthanasia and makes it understandable to children as young as five. Nobody wants to talk about these difficult subjects and it helps so much to have a book to open the door to a discussion.

This is a fantastic book and aimed for kids a little older than the cover seems to show. This book tackles really heavy stuff like illegal immigration, racism and multiple cultures. It also keeps it fun with magic ants and school projects. I have read quite a few of Lois Wickstrom’s books and this is by far my favorite and the most needed.

I thought this story was adorable but it also showed how much what we do as adults affect children. My heart hurt for Rusty with everything he dealt with and felt. Very glad that he had his grandfather there to teach him that he was enough and that he had the power to steer his future and make a change. I love carousels and the magic of the story made them even better.

Oscar and Emmy Lose a Friend is an emotional and educational read about saying goodbye to a furry loved one which is not easy no matter how young or old you are.
Grief is different for everyone and especially little people, but Terri has done a brilliant job of putting together a controversial topic for a child and made it into a story that is caring and easily shared. I like that she doesn’t shy away from topics that others would not think to do especially for kids where it is a confusing and hard time.
It is a story about making those tough and importance decision together as a family. The bright and colourful pictures help to explain the process of what happens and to know it is ok to be sad and miss them.
I see there are many more adventures for Oscar and Emmy to read to my family.

Oscar and Emmy Gain a Friend by Terri Sabol. This is a wonderful book about the topic of stray and feral cats. Abby and Charlie have 2 pet cats, Oscar and Emmy. When the cats make a new friend in Shadow, a stray cat that has kittens, they ask their mom if they can feed them. Their mom says yes but she also explains to the kids that she has to call the vet. The vet wants her to trap the momma cat and kittens and bring them in. The vet teaches them all about the trap neuter return program. Trying to cut down on the stray cat population is a must for just about all areas. The kids are excited to be able to help the momma cat and kittens and are excited to have learned something new. Such a good educational book!

This books is heart breaking and yet amazing all at the same time. This book covers a topic that is difficult to discuss with children – loss and the loss of a pet. The author handles it beautifully and it is an emotional and well written story. Thankfully, this isn’t a topic I have had to touch on with my kids but it thought it was a great way to gently introduce them to the subject. And, in the future if it becomes any more relevant, I will certainly revisit this book with them as a way to explain what is happening.
This whole series has been engaging and fun to read and, despite the subject matter, this one has to be my favourite so far. I can’t wait to see what is next.

Illustrations are wondering done and full of detail. I like how the kids want to help a stray cat and give it food. The cats that Oscar and Emmy have were adopted from the shelter and I love how this promotes adoption of stray animals. I have never heard of a trap-neuter-return program before. I’m not sure how I feel about returning animals back to the street. The book let’s the reader know how the animals are treated and released. The book is simple enough for kids to read and doesn’t go into too much detail about neutering. Just enough information for age appropriate audience.

It’s sad when we lose our pets. This story explains about euthanasia in a soft way that is just right for children to understand. We all know when it is time to help our pets not feel pain anymore. This is just what happens with Shadow when the family who feeds him comes down with cancer. The parents are great about explaining what is happening with Shadow and why they are making this choice.

This children’s book deals with the hard truth of losing a pet and the even harder truth of having to make the decision to euthanize the pet. It was fabulously done. Sabol handles the topic with a delicacy that speaks of experience and wisdom. This is a fantastic book filled with information if you have children and are having to go through this experience. The illustrations are very well done and, again, the topic is treated with dignity and respect.
