This book is the first in a series by one of my favorite young adult authors. Wow did this book bring back some old school memories. In fact, I would highly recommend adults read this book because you will laugh and cry at all the angst going on that you also found yourself dealing with during your middle school years. I reminisced over all that I fretted over and worried about as a middle school teenager and as an adult laughed aloud over because it was so petty and trivial. But at the time seemed so major and significant. It really took me back and made me see how much I have grown and learned based on those times that I worried about. This was a great read and I look forward to picking up the next book in the collection.

True Colors was entertaining. I found myself finished with the book before I even realized it. I believe it touched upon a lot of topics that teens throughout history had to endure. Trials of friendships, self esteem issues, bullying, gossiping, trying to find your footing while in high school, and let’s not forget boys. I think young teens would enjoy this series and is age appropriate material.

This book took me back to my teen days. The urge to fit in, urge to stand out. Landry is an 8th grader who wants to do something amazing but feels her life is normal. She has two good friends, nice parents and is doing very well at school. She enters a modelling competition, gets selected, her friends don’t, and now she has to face different challenges . She tries to fit in with the new bunch of people, but fails to do so. She becomes an object of envy and jealousy, which leaves her confused and alone. This issue is not typical just to teenagers, success drives people to face many challenges. But the teenager issues, dealing with growing hormones, the emotions are very nicely captured in this book. I really enjoyed reading it.

True Colors: Landry’s True Colors Series is the first book in this series for tweens. Landry is going through the struggles of middle school. She wants to be one of the “interesting” girls and soon finds a new series of challenges that await her with a new status. This book is a sweet reminder of the struggles of being a middle school girl and wanting to fit in. I enjoyed reading about Landry and her wanting to stay true to herself. This is a great read for young girls and those going through the middle school years. I enjoyed that Landry realized that things are not always as they appear with changes in popularity in school. Lost friends, new friends, foes, and new adventures. All can enjoy the book, and I will pass this on to my niece to read since she is hitting this period of her life. I look forward to reading more from this series and the author in the future.

Landry, a 14 year old girl, thinks she is nothing special. She dislikes a lot about herself. When her two best friends, Tori and Ericka, decide the three of them should try out for a reality tv show about young models, Landry thinks she will be laughed at. Being the people pleaser she is, she goes to the audition. The judges liked Landry and she moved on to the next round. Meanwhile Tori and Ericka were cut.

Monday rolls around and Landry is shunned by both girls. They started talking behind her back and low key insulting her. Landry started hanging out with a few other girls in her grade. Some of them were typical teenage girls, jealous, controlling, already established with their own cliques.

Landry just wants to have a friend she can rely on when she needs emotional support. She feels like no matter where she goes, she’s on the outside looking in. Will she ever truly belong somewhere?

While reading this book, I felt like either I could have written it myself or someone wrote about my life when I was 14 years old. The author was spot on about what being a 14 year old girl was like. Jealousy, low self-esteem, backstabbing, never knowing who your true friends are. I had all these things happen to me, minus the modeling, when I was that age so this book hit me in the feels. Highly recommend this book to teenagers and young adults.

This book is one that anyone around the same age as the main character should read it. Even as an adult this book was so relatable. It portrayed that era of school so well and it really brought memories of how it was for me. This made it so easy to connect with the story and the characters, especially the main character.
This is an author that I have become quite familiar with over the last couple of years and it really feels like her writing just gets better and better. This was a brilliant story and a really great way to kick off a new series. I am already looking forward to picking up book 2.

True Colors is a novel that is appropriate for middle grade readers – fifth to eighth grades. The story has many issues that kids of that age group can identify with-in fact, when I think back to when I was that age, it is spot on! Some of the issues include the struggle to fit in, cliques and belonging, boy-crazy friends, and lack of confidence. The overall message is that one shouldn’t limit themselves to just one or two friends, but look for something redeeming in all different groups of friends.

This book is about Landry and the middle school dramas we adults can remember going through. She had two friends, they went to do a tryout, but when she made it and they didn’t, they got jealous and started bullying her. Then the peer pressure was there when they pressured her to do the tryout to begin with. I had bullies, peer pressuring, and so much happen to me in middle school. I hope I can say that any middle schooler should read this book and learn what to avoid and how to get out of situations. It was a good book to read with so much information!

Cute read with great life lessons. It’s something for all middle schoolers to read and learn the importance of just being who you are. Meant more for kids, but a bit of fun for adults as well. I adored Landry’s character and related to her struggles from my middle school days. This author is new to me, but I will definitely pick up again, and suggest to my daughters.

True Colors by Krysten Lindsay Hager is book one in the Landry True Colors series. This was a fast and easy read, totally clean as well. As a whole the book was good. As an adult reading I found it a little boring at times because it was middle school so it’s nothing like I usually read. However, thinking like a teenager, it felt like I was in middle school all over again! It made me feel like I was there and thinking as if I were a preteen again. So much friend drama, was it really like that?! (Yes, yes it was.) the story is about Landry and how she loses her best friends. Between trying to navigate life and figuring out who she is, she just wants to make it through school. Definitely a book I’d let my preteen read.

This book had all the memories of my middle school days come back to me. Reading Landry’s story and all of the drama that came along with it made me wish I had found this book in middle school. My daughter and I read it together and it had amazing learning opportunities for her. It showed her that not everyone is your friend and some are even a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I loved reading Landry’s story and watching her “grow up” a little and become more true to herself!

This is book one in the series. I enjoyed the nostalgia when reading True Colors. It’s filled with tween/teen drama that is appropriate for middle school. The story creates a positive message for the reader and has wonderful character development. A plus for any tween/teen!

3/5 Stars When I first started the book, I was a little throw off by the writing style. I had to adjust myself to think with the mindset of a a 12-13 year old girl, that’s just entering into middle school. Once I did that, I was able to enjoy the book way more. It reminded me a lot of what it’s like to be a young girl going through changes, becoming interested in more teen-like things, and managing my social life as best as possible. As an adult I thought it was immature that Tori & Ericka were behaving the way they were, but at that age it’s totally appropriate lol. It’s a great read for young girls who are getting into reading and want a relatable read. It’s very easy to read and follow along with.

This book is a good read. Krysten did an amazing job with character development and showing young adult relationships.

This book follows Landry. She is a teenage girl who is trying to discover herself while having an active social life. As we all know friendships are hard to maintain especially when jealousy and other out forces are intervening. Being young and finding yourself is hard enough now add in jealous friends and love triangles and you have a recipe for disaster.

Teenage girls are ruthless and fight dirty. When someone allows jealousy to get the best of them issues will arise. Landry just wants to try something new and different for herself. She has always tried to blend in and when her friends push her to try something new she now has the chance to stand out. What happens when the girl hardly anyone notices starts getting noticed?

Will popularity and new friends change her? Will she find a boyfriend? Will she be the next up-and-coming model? Read this book to find out what is in store for Landry and her friends.

This was a good read in how realistic Landry’s every day life was as a young teenage girl- you know, other than the modeling contract, that’s less ordinary! What WAS ordinary, sadly, is how her “friends” responded.
So many themes of this story rang true from what I remember of my teenage years; the insecurities and desires to fit in, the boy crazy feelings that run through groups of friends and the fear of offending anyone and everyone unintentionally.
In all honesty, the realistic nature of the stories left me feeling uncomfortable remembering my own teenage years, not something I had anticipated reliving any time soon! Kudos to Ms. Hager for creating parallels that most every teenage girl can relate to!

Upon reading the description of True Colors, I thought it would be good for my 13 year old. I wanted to read it first, to see how it approached the topics outlined. I really enjoyed the story line, and it was relatable to middle school life for a girl. It addresses topics of parent separation, friend betrayal, jealousy, peer pressure, self esteem, first crushes, and more. I liked that the author showed how these things made Landry feel, and the different friendship styles among the girls she hung out with. Each girl had her moment, where she was supportive, or not such a good friend, and how each girl handled it. It made me remember how mean kids can be and how hard the teen years are. The only thing I thought was unrealistic was the financial aspects- Landry makes comments about her mom being tight on money, but then Landry is at the movies or mall every weekend. It was a well written book, and I will be suggested it to my daughter to read.

This book will definitely remind you of life as a middle school girl (if you were one) and may even remind you of middle school in general. Landry is a typical middle school girl who gets dragged into a contest for a modeling reality show by her friends. She doesn’t view herself as pretty enough, and she doesn’t want to be a part of it really, but when she is the only one of the three girls selected, her two “friends” begin to treat her like she’s invisible. Landry is forced to make other friends. Landry’s new friends, one of whom is also part of the contest, help her to get over the sting of betrayal, but that doesn’t necessarily fix everything. There are the typical kinds of inner group fights, but eventually Landry finds her true friends.

This book would be a great one for a pre-teen or teen. Middle school was and interesting time and lets be honest, kind of sucky time. This book shows all of the different things someone might face in middle school. It includes teenage drama, bullying, trying to fit in, finding yourself at that age, and the question we all had at that age… is being popular all that it is cracked up to be? It was well written and a I enjoyed the story the author brought to us even if it was not my preferred genre and I am looking forward to letting my daughter read this in her teens.

This was such an amazing book, I could not put it down. The author had my attention from the very first page. The plot reminded me so much about my middle school experience and I related to it a LOT! This book was drama filled just like middle school. It also talks about the bullying, anxiety, and peer pressure that goes on in middle school and on. This author had the plot and characters well thought out! Great job! I can’t wait to read more of her books!!

Landry just wants to fit in with all the other girls. When an opportunity comes up to go and audition for a modeling agency, she and her friends all go together. Landry started finding out who her true friends were when she was the only one to make the next cut of auditions. All of a sudden, her besties got all weird on her and other people started gravitating towards her.

This story of Landry and her friends would best appeal to younger teens (ages 8-12). I felt like I was watching and listening to my daughters all over again! This story is full of teenage drama, shopping trips to the mall, and boy talk. There are some unresolved issues amongst the friends that kinda left a feeling of incompleteness. Overall, a decent read.

I found this to be a wonderful book written for teen girls. Landry is a teen going through some of the same drama we see in today’s society when she enters a modeling contest and her friends turn on her. True Colors is the first book in the Landry’s True Colors series by Krysten Lindsay Hager. It is a cute, sweet, YA/middle grade/teen, coming of age story- with teenage angst/drama, jealousy, insecurities, fear, friendships, jealousy, and expectations. This genre is Ms. Hager’s wheelhouse and is something she does quite well.
It is definitely a YA story- showcasing teenage issues like pressure to conform, living up to expectations, teen angst/drama/insecurities and fitting in.
As I have mentioned before, I do enjoy YA stories, being a more ‘mature’ reader, I prefer my reading material to be a little ‘meatier’- but still enjoy exploring YA stories as they are usually fairly light and easy to read and make a great break from my heavier reads. This is definitely the case here- a nice story with just enough angst and drama to keep things interesting and very well suited for the younger reader.
I will be continuing the series and am interested to see what happens in Book #2…

True Colors was exactly what I expected it to be. The author brought me back to being a teenager at that age. It reminded me that kids are cruel and ruin your life. I was a floater, I spoke kindly towards everyone. Did everyone like me? No. Did people talk behind my back? They still do. But when you’re that age you care too much. It can destroy one’s confidence and will to live. This book is all that and more.
What makes a true friend?
I ask that because in this story Landry finds out the hard way who is and isn’t her friend. Landry is dragged by her two best friends to a model audition. Little did she know it would change her life. Because when she got the call to say she was through to the next round, those so-called best friends turned on her. She was left alone to navigate life by herself. Did she make acquaintances? Sure but was anyone really there for her? Did anyone truly support her? She needs to learn really quickly that what other people say and think doesn’t matter to embrace oneself is what does. Easier said than done. I’ve been a Landry at one point. I can relate oh so well.
The author has you rooting and cheering for her. Keeping you on the edge of your seat, about what would happen. The growth is beautiful and beautifully written. You should definitely give this author a chance.

True Colours is a tween/teen drama story where self-doubt and longing are ripe. With all the emotions and drama, angst and jealousy, deep-seated insecurities and bullying, want and peer pressure rein. It certainly takes you back to your time in school when all you wanted was to fit in and be one of the popular kids. However, you soon realise that it’s not all it is cracked up to be. But let’s not forget the harassment and mind games others play when they don’t get what they want. I would not like to go back and relive it all again.
The characters you will like but there are those who you just want to rip into and give a piece of your mind and tell them to grow up.
I thought there were some unanswered questions that I felt where unresolved but maybe they will be answered in the next book.

Landry has self-doubt and feelings of never being enough when compared to others and everything that goes along with finding your place in the world. A time where you are still a child and finding out who you are.
If you are a tween/teen then this story is for you.

A cute story about growing up and the difficulties that come with it. Right from the start, the book had my smiling. It started out so fun and quirky and I was immediately hooked! Once the story progresses, it actually hit on several really serious topics and even pulled a tear or two from me! I went from giggling along with the quirkiness of the main characters, to suffering, to frustration, and back again. Some parts were so captivating, and other parts were a bit slower to get through. I loved the ending and how everything was wrapped up. My only complaint is that I would have liked to experience more of the ending, maybe a few more interactions with the characters at the end and some idea on where they were headed. It felt like the ending was the start of the new beginning I had been hoping for the two characters! Perhaps there will be another book… I guess I can dream!

So it wasn’t the plot or the characters that grabbed me in this book – it was the hilarious writing. I love this author’s sense of humor. The way she spins the story is entertaining, but the inner dialogue of Emme is my favorite thing about this book. My favorite line is “I’ve seen dogs chase the mail carrier with more dignity.” I enjoyed this book immensely!! Keep writing with your great style – I love it!

I absolutely love this book. I guess it’s because I am a sucker for YA romance. I love how it’s about an ordinary girl and a rich guy fall in love. Usually this doesn’t happen in real life. It made me so happy!
