The Mermaid and the Rainbow (Mermaid Science) by Lois Wickstrom – Review by Barbie England

the mermaid and the rainbowthe mermaid and the rainbow by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This story has some science experiments that kids can replicate easily. The information is presented in an engaging and factual way. I think that it would encourage kids to investigate more and ask questions. This and the related titles are all good resources for teachers to support science curriculum. Trezzie (the mermaid) is Maia’s imaginary friend who helps to show Fig (Maia’s human friend) how to see air, and how to use water and a mirror to make a rainbow. This is a wonderful children’s story!

The Mermaid and the Ice Cube Necklace is a children’s story in the group that follows two friends and a mermaid. Maia is the one who can communicate with the mermaid, whose name is Trezzie. This book teaches factual information that may help teachers introduce or supplement science lessons on the states of matter. The art style is a nice complement to the content as well.

Mermaid and the Water Magnifying Glass: a Mermaid Science StoryMermaid and the Water Magnifying Glass: a Mermaid Science Story by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is adorable. And who doesn’t love mermaids?! This book is about two friends playing by a lake (Fig and Maia). Maia can see the mermaid Trezzie, but Fig can’t. It can make this a bit strange when playing. Fig and Maia are playing with stones when Maia spots Trezzie swimming towards them. Trezzie places a small stone next to Maia, but when she shows it to Fig she says it’s to small for their tower. Maia thinks there is something about it because it came from Trezzie. When they look closer they can see that there is something on it, but they need a magnifying glass to see it better. Science to the rescue! Fig says she knows how to make one, and lists an item she needs. Fig doesn’t see Trezzie go into the lake and bring back an item, but it shows up next to her feet!! Fig makes a magnifying glass with the container and they can see what is on the rock. Maia says to show Trezzie, but because Fig can’t see her she lets Maia show her. It turns out that there is a fossil on the stone. Something similar to a Rolly-Polly. The bug that curls up with you touch it. The girls ask if there are more so they can each bring one home. Trezzie leaves and is gone a long time. Fig thinks she got lost and decides to head home. What happened to Trezzie? Does she come back? Do they get their fossils? Read the book to find out that and more!! This book was for my seven year old. She LOVES mermaids and this one is so cute! The story keeps her locked in until the end. And it’s fun to test out some of the science from the books! There are more than one book, but they can be read as stand alone with no problems. I love the added science in the book. That’s not something that is really taught at the younger ages so “sneaking” it in now can’t hurt!

This is such a cute book! And I just love the idea of an UnBirthday surprise! Every year Caspin and his Grandpa share a special tradition of a surprise box under his bed for his birthday. This year there was 2!!!! What could that second one be? What could it mean!? He opens up the presents and of course is shocked at what he got. He doesn’t understand why those gifts, but he remembers from previous birthdays (other books in series) that sometimes the gifts are far from what he expects. He brings his gifts downstairs and on the way learns about the first one. After his grandpa explains the bigger gift his mother gives him a hint about the smaller one and rushes off. He smells something out in the hall that brings him to another surprise of the day. What will he do with his new surprises? And what adventures await down the hall? Read this cute children’s book to find out! My 7 year old liked this book. It wasn’t super long and it was a fun plot, so it kept her interest until the end. The illustrations are cute and younger kids can follow the story plot with the pictures easily. I would defiantly recommend this book to kids ages 4-8. Younger kids being read to and the older kids reading out loud. I would also recommend getting the other in the set, but you can read it alone.

These two stories are quick and fun reads, the stories are cute and entertaining while they help to show the meaning of friendship. Little ones will enjoy the dinosaurs and their antics. Conifer and Spike learn to cooperate and to think out of the box to solve their problems. These stories help youngsters understand that working together will not only solve the problem quicker, but it will also help friendships strengthen. Alongside the stories are cute pictures to enhance the tales.

This is my second book from Wickstrom on this Mermaid and I fell in love all over again! This mermaid story takes to new discoveries using a cup, paper, cardboard, and a mirror. Such simple, everyday objects that young children can use for great scientific exploration! It is also a great story showing how a pair of human girls and a mermaid can share their knowledge and share what they know with one another to discover something new and exciting.
I’ve been so personally intrigued by these stories as a parent and an educator on how you can take such a popular character, a mermaid, and throw in the mix of scientific exploration with everyday items. It is such an important time for young children to harness that youthful discovery and imagination so this sense of inquiry can expand into their adulthood as they set their own path into the world. When a story can encompass the ability of exploration, it provides excitement and continued interest in the field. I would definitely recommend this story as well to families and educators of young children.

Dinosaur Friends: A Present for the Volcano

This story was short and sweet. It’s a story of Spike and Conifer who are best friends. Spike sees an unhappy (erupting) volcano and wants to give it a present. The two friends build the volcano, a necklace of stones, which is made to look like a ring of stones around the base of the volcano. Eventually, the volcano fully erupts and the friends go running. When they stop to look back, they realize their necklace of stones is blocking any flowing lava.

Dinosaur Friends: Saving Conifer’s Eggs

This is another short and sweet story about Spike and Conifer. When the forest where they live catches fire, Spike comes to warn his friend, Conifer. Conifer isn’t sure what to do since she can’t carry all 3 eggs with only 2 hands, and she has to be very careful that they don’t break. When Conifer is worried about her next, Spike waits impatiently and ends up knocking down a tree with his long tail. The two friends use the tree to safely escape the forest fire by using it to float down the river.

My niece and nephew always love when I bring them a new Wickstrom story book; she is one of their favorite authors. This book was even more exciting for them, two stories in one. These stories followed Dino friends Conifer and Spike on two different adventures. Along the way the two learn about kindness, working together, and understanding just to name a few skills. The story is well written and with excellent illustrations. I would recommend this as well as Wickstrom’s other books for elementary ages kids, or kids that are struggling with their reading levels. Overall an adorable story with a moral.

These were really cute books! They are not the first I’ve read by this author and I always get excited seeing new content from her! Overall I really enjoyed these books. The illustrations are beautiful and the story in both can be very relatable for children of a young age.
In both the books the main characters Spike and Conifer work together to overcome each other’s fears and problem-solve to help one another. I read both of these books to my daughter and she loved them. She loved looking at the pictures and pointing to the dinosaurs while I read the stories. They caught her attention as well as my own right away and as an early childhood educator, I am looking forward to introducing these well-written and illustrated stories into my classroom!
I would highly recommend these books to anyone with children or as a gift for a child who loves dinosaurs and reading!

This book is a 2 for one book, just flip it over for the next story. Spike ( an ankylosaurus) and Conifer (a tyrannosaurus) are friends and work well together. Sometimes they disagree but most of the time not. When a volcano in the distance is erupting what do you think happens next? In Book 2 there is a fire and Conifer has got to save her eggs. Spike comes to help her and they make a plan to get to safety. Where do you think they go? I will not give out spoilers! I have been following this author and her children’s books. They all have something new for the children to learn. The illustrations are just as interesting as the story itself. I recommend this book to teachers and children alike.

The pictures are adorable, even on the Kindle format, which is very nice. The stories are about 2 dinosaur friends working together to solve 2 very different issues. In the first story, we have a volcano about to blow and Spike wants to give the volcano a necklace, while the other Conifer wants to run away! In the second story, there is a forest fire, but Conifer, has laid 3 eggs, and she only has 2 hands. Her friend Spike comes to help her, but he walks on 4 legs. A Present for the Volcano
I thought this was a great children’s book. It was short and to the point with just enough repetition to help those that are just getting acquainted with reading. Even in just a few pages it showed being mindful and kind even with a big, angry, scary volcano!

Saving Conifer’s Eggs
Spike and Conifer are at it again in another short and to the point book about problem solving and friendship. I had a lot
of fun reading this short adventure with my 6 year old. Added bonus, we love the illustrations.

Two books in one with Spike and Conifer, two dinosaurs who have formed a friendship helping one another. The first book is about a volcano ready to erupt and how Spike and Conifer come up with a solution to temper the situation. The second book is about Conifer’s eggs that need saving and coming up with a solution that not only saves the eggs but helps Spike too. Both books are fun to read with great problem solving skills that are easy to engage the young readers into helping figure out what will happen next.

A Present for The Volcano speaks volumes about perspective and perceptions. Conifer was worried all day and just wanted to get out of the situation, but her friend did what they could to make the situation better. They prepared and took action, and while it was questionable how it would turn out, Conifer decided to trust her friend and help. And in the end, she was able to see from a different point of view. These stories are adorable. Mama Conifer T-Rex and her ankylosaurus friend work together when a problem comes up. Even when things look dark, they find a way. The artwork is amazing too. I love the textures and the colors. I definitely recommend both!

My daughter loves these books as they are easy for her to understand and follow along with. She really becomes invested in the stories and requests to read them multiple times.
These two books were the first time my son has also shown an interest. He loved the pictures of the Dinosaurs and kept pointing to them trying to ‘roar’. This author has created two stories that appeal to the younger audience so well, and spans across multiple age ranges with ease. These are fantastic books and even I can’t wait to read them again.

This is a fun two book series. They are adventurous stories full of colourful pages. In A Present for the Volcano, Spike wants to give an erupting volcano a present to make it happy. Although Conifer wasn’t sure it would help, she stuck by her friend and helped him. In Saving Conifer’s Eggs, the two put their heads together to save her eggs from the forest fire. Both books teach children that when you cooperate, you can accomplish a lot. Both stories have valuable lessons that young children should learn and honestly which child doesn’t love dinosaurs.
