Fiddle and Fire is the second book in the Hearts of Gold Series by Ariella Talix. This is an historical romance, menage/why choose, MMF story, set in the early days of San Francisco. Sprinkled with a little danger, drama, mystery, suspense, chemistry and sizzle- the synopsis promised all the ingredients that I normally love to find in a story- but unfortunately I failed to connect with the characters or their story, which in turn made it difficult to immerse myself in the story the way I had hoped. Suzette, Walter, and James just didn’t grab me- and I had to keep my mind from wandering and force myself to stay in the story. Which was frustrating. I felt that some things were a bit of an info dump, while others lacked the detail I would have liked. The chemistry/sizzle/sexiness didn’t live up to expectation either- but perhaps that’s just me. I will probably go back and reread this book in a month or so, and give it another chance to pull me in, as maybe this time round I was just having an off reading day. So, stay tuned. Happy Reading…

This is a dark, fun, and sinister little tale that although short in length, leaves nothing lacking- with all the intrigue and impact of a much longer novel. Belladonna has been living as a recluse for quite some time now- setting up home in the forest, alone with nature. Until her peace is disturbed by humans desecrating her sacred space. One of the humans catches her eye, and a bit of an obsession starts. Rene has arrived at yet another grizzly crime scene- the murders are taking their toll on him- body, mind, and spirit. Now he has started hallucinating. But has he really, or is there something else at play here? As strange things begin happening more and more often, Rene finds himself caught in a web that he might not escape. And who is this mysterious woman that flits through his dreams? Who is behind the murders, and why? With danger mounting and secrets revealed, what ensues makes for a fantastic read… Ms. Styx has once again woven such a cleverly crafted story that had me flipping the pages, reading avidly, to discover what would happen next. The darkish, sinister feel really added to the impact of the story, and I loved the intense atmosphere that Ms. Styx created. This story definitely captured my attention right from the beginning with her unique, mysterious, moody, and slightly spooky vibe that managed to permeate through the entire story. The intriguing mystery and suspense pulled me further and further into the story as I tried to figure out what was going on and how everything would play out in the end. As I have come to expect from Ms. Styx, her story is crafted in a way that not everything is as it first appears, and as the revelations come, they are definitely unexpected. She left me guessing most of the way through about what would happen in the end. Again, very cleverly done… Ms. Styx didn’t disappoint, as her storytelling, writing, scene-setting, world-building, and dramatic touches are all very rich, imaginative, and vividly descriptive. She wove a lot into a small package, but expertly choreographs all the elements into quite a unexpectedly fun and engrossing read. Can’t wait to see what comes next… Happy Reading…

This is such a great read! Who didn’t dream of having super powers as they grew up? I know I sure did, and this book is chalked full of many different types of mutants and supernaturals (Supers).
You get adventure from literally the first pages of this book as Noah tries to evade certain people, and the thrills just keep growing from there. Noah Reagan wants to make a scientific breakthrough, gain respect, and maybe even make a name for himself in the science world. He sees being accepted into The Summer with Supers Youth Program as the best route to start making his dreams a reality, but with the mutant population on the rise, he’s enlisted to help in his father’s Mega-Maintenance cleanup company. Will he stay the target of bullies forever as he watches his wonderfully planned summer go down the drain or can he find a way to get out of cleaning up and babysitting this summer? Are things going to get out of hand as Noah tries to find his own path?
This is a fun fast chapter book that will appeal to old and young alike. Brittany Tucker’s writing style is easy to follow and really gets you involved in the story and what the characters are going through. Though it’s a fantasy book, there are a lot of relatable scenarios in it as well, such as: bullying, feeling misunderstood, feeling that they aren’t listened to by a parent, and many more. There can be so many conversations and lessons that can be brought up from this one book. I personally can’t wait for more!

This is the 3rd book I’ve read by this author, and it’s definitely the most bizarre. Cabin Eight is strangely satisfying. The author keeps you intrigued and wanting more. It feels like Alice in Wonderland meets Labyrinth with everything going on. Miranda finds herself in a lot of unfortunate trouble. Needing a break from life her mom suggested she respond to a resort invite and to take a mini-vacation. Well that mini-vacation sends Miranda on an unwanted adventure that ends up turning into so much more. Lessons to be learned, fears to overcome, and acceptance of things one wants to forget. The resort facility is truly testing Miranda’s strengths and limits. Stating it’s an experiment. All Miranda wants is to get out of this place, get to her car, and leave. Will she get out of the facility? Will she complete the experiment? This book makes you think. Tests one’s limits. While keeping it interesting all the same. No matter the book I will recommend this author. This book is no different but you might want to go into this with a clear and open mind.

This the third book by Susan Specht Oram. These are standalone books, but it is nice to read them in order. This book was hard to believe with Miranda. Another unique book in the Millersville Series. It is described as a conspiracy theory thriller which seems an apt description. Unfortunately, the whole concept was beyond far fetched. This book was brilliantly written with a complex but strong character development. The author keeps the reader intrigued and excited to continue reading the book with its many twists and turns.
Sloan, the female lead character is living a complicated life while trying to distance herself from her past. Her life hasn’t been easy and thing’s drastically changed after the mysterious disappearance of her younger brother many years ago. Her father was convicted, her mother committed and Sloan had to make her way through the thick of things mostly on her own. She had a few loved ones back home who helped her with her mother, which she constantly felt guilty about each day. When she found out that she needed to come home again due to family drama, she reluctantly returns and soon finds her life flipped upside down.
This book is a fantastic mystery and crime story with a few twists and turns that will have you questioning who did it!?

I love this authors story books and this story did not disappoint. Loretta is such an inquisitive child. I love that she questions what is happening and in turn, giving lessons that are fun and entertaining. The artwork is beautiful and gives wonderful visuals.
Cabin Eight is my least favorite from the Millersville series. I highly recommend Shore Lodge and The Thieves instead. I think the biggest issue with the book is that I found the storyline unbelievable. It felt like Alice in Wonderland or a dream world where I was trying to make sense of the trials that Miranda was going through. She must learn from her mistakes to forgive herself for her past. It is a short story and does make you question how many permissions you’ve given away to companies mining your personal information.

Miranda Diggs hasn’t lived the best life. She’s had some childhood trauma that might have prompted her most recent incident. She accidentally sets fire to a motel and subsequently, has a lot of reparations to make. Her mom sends her off to a secluded resort where she can think through her actions and try to get her life together, while avoiding the media. What Miranda doesn’t realize is that the reporter tailing her might be her only hope for survival.
Once at the resort, it doesn’t take Miranda long to figure out that this isn’t your typical location for a private getaway. Things start to go downhill fast and Miranda longs to just be in Cabin Eight.
While this book is part of the Millersville Series, this can be read as a standalone. Of the previous two books and this one that I’ve read, I think this one is my least favorite but it’s still a really good read. There is a lot of twists and turns in this story and it will keep your attention until the end. I look forward to more stories from Susan Specht Oram!

This book is a steampunk twist on the classic Cinderella tale set in America. I thought it an interesting twist on both the classic story, and for the steampunk genre. It has everything you’d expect: automatons, magic and mystery. I enjoyed how the prose was written, it flowed well and made the narrative easier to follow. I really liked the idea for the storyline where the friends reunite to break the spell Ellie is under and the journey the pair go on in an attempt to accomplish this task. My heart broke for Ellie’s situation and he trying to get through to her father and save him just broke me. I got emotionally invested in her situation and was rooting for her from the beginning. I have mixed feeling about Ben. He’s relatable in that he’s not perfect and there are times I wanted to yell at him for his lack of urgency, but honestly I think these smaller moments are what make his character, and make him more relatable as a person. The step-sisters on the other hand, I enjoyed because of their differences. It reminded me of my sister and I (one of us isn’t ‘evil’) and our differences in personality and interests.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this and thought it a great take on the classic tale.

A Curse of Ash and Iron is a clever YA fantasy story. It is a retelling of Cinderella set in Philadelphia in 1876. I enjoyed the characters, especially Ellie. Even though I was familiar with the basis of the story, I was rooting for all good things for her. Moving the story’s setting to the United States added a new layer to the ages-old tale. I grabbed this because of the cover and story blurb and was not disappointed. Historical fiction is one of my favorites and especially the nineteenth century. This left me wanting more. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

This is not my first book by Susan Specht Oram. I have to say that her books never disappoint. This is the third book in the Millersville Series. I have read all of them but I would say that they could stand alone. This book is so suspenseful. It focuses on Miranda Diggs. She has lived a questionable life, at best, and now she is making another questionable decision. This book is part suspense part sci fi. This book contains so many twists and turns that it definitely kept me guessing and definitely kept me turning the page. This is definitely a book where nothing is as it seems. I definitely recommend this one!

You don’t know who is on the side of the right but just might find your team when you need it the most. Noah is a lovable smart character who isn’t a super yet has a superpower that is all his own. Being a normie has its perks too.

Noah was not looking forward to working the summer with his dad. Being the city’s clean-up specialist was not as glorious a title as one might think. And that’s why Noah wound up hiding in the ladies restroom at the corner gas station from the local high school bullies. How would he get out of this without being seen by everyone? This is a fast-paced tween read. I think teens will find the story exciting and the characters relatable!

An enjoyable and engaging steamy historical romance, with a MMF relationship which kept me happily turning the pages. Set in early San Francisco, where women are scarce, but attitudes are accepting of just about anything, so when both Isaac Stark and Walter James are drawn to the same women, no one raises an eyebrow! French beauty Suzette de Massey blows into the city like wildfire, and is instantly attracted to both Isaac and Walter, and is torn between them despite them being opposites. However, Isaac and Walter have been friends for years and owe their lives to one another and so have a deep affection for one another. Suzette seems to kindle the fire that has been smouldering between them for years. Suzette is excited by the threesome, but she has secrets and a dark past which is catching up with her, putting all three of them in danger. The storyline kept me hooked and the added historical details made me feel immersed in the time period. The main characters are likeable and relatable, and I felt engaged with them throughout the story. The chemistry between Suzette, Isaac and Walter literally sizzles off the page and leads to some extremely passionate and steamy scenes. I loved how the relationship between the three of them develops throughout the book. An entertaining read.

This is an entertaining and gripping high-stakes psychological conspiracy thriller, which had me hooked from start to finish. Although part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone story, however I would recommend each book in the series. Miranda Diggs was a house cleaner who whilst trying to purge bad memories accidentally set fire to a motel, and so now full of regret and longing for absolution she checks herself into a mysterious remote resort. Although she was hoping for some peace, her curiosity led her to venture beyond the “No Trespassing” signs, and she finds herself in a rundown barn. Miranda is then horrified when the door suddenly slams shut, and then locks, the only way out appears to be through a trapdoor leading into a tunnel below. Miranda soon discovers that she’s in an eerie game that seems to know all her secrets, and the trials which start as subtle emotional prods quickly turn into life and death situations. Miranda is not only tackling these trials, and her phobias but also the walls, which are literally closing in. This is a fast paced, action packed story, with plenty of plot twists and turns which kept me reading late into the night! The suspense levels had me on the edge of my seat whilst reading this, and I definitely felt totally immersed in the story and was there alongside Miranda as the walls were closing in!

This was an enjoyable retelling of the Cinderella story with a Steampunk twist, which had me hooked throughout. Set in Philadelphia in 1876, in a world that has automatons and steam powered ‘motor cars’, and childhood friends Benjamin Grimm and Eleanor Banneker are reunited. However, Ben’s delight soon turns to dismay when he learns that Eleanor has been under a spell, put on her by her stepmother, for the last seven years and she’s been forced to live as a servant in her own home. Ellie had spent years bewitched under her stepmother’s watchful and unforgiving eye, whilst being hidden in plain sight. Ellie becomes hopeful when having met Ben again, he seems immune to the magic binding her and their friendship is rekindled. However, the couple must find away to break the curse before midnight on New Year’s Eve, or both Ellie and her father will be bound forever. I felt immersed in the storyline and engaged with the characters. The intriguing storyline and plot twists kept me happily turning the pages, whilst both the setting and characters were brought vividly to life by the descriptive narrative.
