What Do the Plants Say? (Alex, the Inventor) by Lois Wickstrom – Review by Melissa Saxton

What Do the Plants Say? (Alex, the Inventor)What Do the Plants Say? by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another cute story using the scientific method. This one focuses on hearing plants making pop pop noises and recording it, slowing it down and they decipher a meaning from it!
Once the meaning is discovered they have a little adventure and are able to talk back to the plants by recording what they say And speeding it up until it sounds like pop pop so the plants can understand it.
Though this was cute and still followed (sort of) the scientific method of discovery and invention it did not keep my daughters attention like other books by this author, but there is plenty to keep us busy!

Obedience (Ties That Bind)Obedience by Liza Snow
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Cassandra is young, but her life has been hard. framed with tragedy she has worked incredibly hard despite her losses to be able to audition and train with her idle Chandler in the Silks as an arielist, but she gets a lot more than she bargains for with Chandler Morrow.
Cassandra and Chandler both have lived their own share of horrific tragedy and trauma and have a lot of baggage, but the chemistry is undeniable between them, and the narration in the book makes it even better. Can these two get out of their own way and move past all the interference from everyone else to be together, or is life planning to destroy them as well. Will the secrets be too much? It appears the circus has a lot more going on than meets the eye!
The ending of this book…oh my! I can’t wait until these two finally unravel the secrets they’ve held from one another because it is going to be .. mmm more explosive than the ending of this book… if that’s possible. well done!!

Esprit de Corpse by Ef Deal – Review by Melissa Saxton

Esprit de CorpseEsprit de Corpse by Ef Deal
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I admittedly have never read a steampunk genre book so I wasn’t sure what to expect but was blown away by this story as the author must have done immense research.
Its the Victorian era, mid 1800s in France and we meet Jacky a studious serious mechanically inclined borderline genius and her sister Angie who is carefree has a zest for life and quite often needs to be bailed out by her sister in many questionable situations. They board a train, but the train ends up having a mechanical failure and Jackie is shocked to find its not run by normal means, and Jacky wants to figure out the mystery behind this train, this also leads them to uncover so many things including a war about to outbreak. Can these sisters stop the war before it starts?
This book was a lot of fun. Jacky and Angie did a lot of growing up as I got through the story and worked together like true twins do. I was fascinated by all of the true to history Victorian era items in the book and really enjoyed also the Paranormal that was part of this book and somehow this historical fiction and Paranormal and steampunk came together flawlessly with excellent attention to detail. This has opened my eyes to a new genre I’ll want to explore further.

The Crown of Stones: Magic-Borne (The Crown of Stones Book 3) by C.L. Schneider – Review by Melissa Saxton

Magic-Borne (The Crown of Stones, #3)Magic-Borne by C.L. Schneider
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In the final installment of this breathtaking series Ian Troy is all that’s left to save his realm and his people from his sadistic father who’s made himself the self appointed emperor….the resistance is shattered, the crown of stones is lost, the people have no hope and Ian Troy is in hiding marked by the crown for destruction. He’s had a vision of a tragic desolate future but can he bring the change that’s needed to thwart his vision?

This final book unveils all the secrets of the Shinree that have been lost to endless slavery and the secrets of their magic and the start of their Slavery.
Ian Troy still bears the marks of his use of magic, and gathers more marka with every use changing him a little more. What is one man willing to carry, or give up in the name of peace? Can he defeat his father once and for all or is the entire race doomed?

This was a thrilling conclusion with a bittersweet but very circular and appropriate ending that left me sad this series was over as i became attarched to the characters. A fantastic read with Brilliantly done characters, twisting and turning plot with vivid imagination and descriptions. So well done.

Taming Brooklyn (The Club Kings Series Book 1)Taming Brooklyn by Charlotte St. Pierre
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Brooklyn is a tough survivor, raised in the fostor system; got serious with a boyfriend who ended up attempting to kill her. She avoids anything romantic related at this point in her life.
She’s worked hard to become a director of a non profit, and her roommate is going away for a couple months on a work assignment so they go out for the night to a club.
Brooklyn (and let’s be honest also myself) was not prepared for the instant red hot chemistry between her and two of the “club kings”. They make her feel things and she runs… but they aren’t about to let her slip away.
This book had red hot smexy scenes, Romance and action when the past comes calling for Brooklyn once again.
This is an absolute can’t miss book!

This story is fast paced, characters are well developed and have a “real” quality to them, and can be comical, witty and do ridiculously dumb things all in the same chapter. This is a multi pov story which also kept my attention.
Well done 2nd story in this series that kept my attention as well as the first

A story about love, devotion hard work and Aliens!
Joe, June’s husband suffers a severe accident leaving him in a permanent comatose state. June cares for him along with her daughters Liv and Cora. They are a tight knit family who works hard to take care of their family their homestead. They are also close with Barb the caretaker.
June’s job is to work with extra terrestrial life as well as real estate, research and so many other things. She goes on many missions with her Partner Sarg who she has a strong relationship with. It was pretty unclear if this was because they were also together despite her taking care of her comatose husband or if they were really just work partners which left me a little confused.
This is a fast paced story line with a strong female lead in the setting of a science fiction which was a great combination

Destiny of Light (Quirk of Destiny, #3)Destiny of Light by Catherine Greenall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Calum a scientist and his group of friends continue to resist the elite and the genies and trying to survive in a crazy post apocalyptic world… but it’s about to get so much worse and they haven’t seen anything yet
It’s hard not to delve into this story because it would be easy to give away what’s happening but the absolute devastation of a world started with genetically modified food is a clash of real world science and Sci-Fi which is absolutely terrifying to read and this ending adding in the Paranormal really rounded out. The ending I didn’t really see coming right away and it was downright shocking. Will humanity survive the plague of genies and modified food and attacks from elites…
This final book is a must read.

He is initially frustrated as the box grandpa gave him was empty. His grandpa however tells him there is an invisible magic wand!! But Caspian has to name it before it would work. Fun things happen after this with magic lessons and fun lessons with “time”.
This is another cute series with a lot of imagination perfect for the preschool kindergarten aged child. My daughter thought this was great and wanted me to get her a wand too!

Imagine living in the wild west… never feeling hungry or want but also completely bored.
Thus starts the story of Simon who leaves home to become a famous outlaw.
However.. it’s not just his lawless adventures you also explore MM romance in a time in history where it was very much not accepted, dangerous and deadly to explore.
This book kept me turning the pages and had a good story with well built characters… wild west stories aren’t typically my favorite read but this one was solid 4 stars given its length

Tamaska is a bright event planner about to have her big break when she holds an event to auction off the Blood opal… but it’s not just the humans who are interested in it
Kodiak is a shifter and a good one, looking soon to challenge and take an Alpha role but still proving himself for the moment takes on the job protecting the Blood opal as security gig to make money and blend in with the humans.
Tamaska and Kodiak are pure fire when they come together but thats the only part that makes sense. There are clearly many secrets being kept from everyone and no one has the whole story.
This is a great series starter. I’m very interested to find out what Tamaskas history is I am sure there is a lot more than meets the eye with every one of these characters

True Colors (Landry’s True Colors Series Book One) by Krysten Lindsay Hager – Review by Melissa Saxton

True Colors (Landry's True Colors #1)True Colors by Krysten Lindsay Hager
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a cute series about middle school and the drama you somehow forget it entails for everyone until you read this story and have a whole lot of nostalgia.
Landry is your typical middle schooler trying to find herself. She has some friends but has an opportunity to do something new when she enters a modeling competition and it may launch her into a spotlight she might not be ready for. Will the extra attention and popularity actually be what she wants? How much drama will come from being noticed?
The character was done well with the interpersonal dynamic of middle schoolers was spot on. Great book for school age kids or even adults looking for nostalgia or just a well done book.

Talisman (The Talisman Series Book 1) by Tam DeRudder Jackson – Review by Melissa Saxton

Talisman (The Talisman, #1)Talisman by Tam DeRudder Jackson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rowan has a lot on his plate: security firm by day (truly a cover) but under it all a Warrior fighting against a curse that was placed against his family by the Morrigan.
If Rowan can’t find his Talisman (also known as a protector) by his 28th birthday he’s left either becoming a slave to the Morrigan or a rogue warrior fighting for his life… and his 28th birthday is quickly approaching.
Alyssa is an overwhelmed graduate student trying to get through her dissertation on Celtic history. She’s recently had multiple losses including her fiancée just walking out on her and she’s at her wits end, only to come across footprints around her house suggesting she has a intended burgler or stalker. Knowing she needs a security firm she reaches out to Rowans firm but gets so much more than she bargains for… it turns out these two are the answers to one another’s needs and they didn’t even know it.
Rowan discovers secrets hidden from Alyssa and he also discovers who Alyssa is to him. Can Alyssa take on the role necessary to help break the curse of the Morrigan?

This story is full of adult themes and is spicy 50 shades meets Paranormal themes. There is a ton of dialog in some sections but if you can be patient it absolutely enriches the story but can go on in excess at times. This series will be intense and I’m intrigued for more.

Much Ado About Dying: An Irish Urban Fantasy Novel (Guardians of the PHAE #2)Much Ado About Dying: An Irish Urban Fantasy Novel by Rowan Dillon

We pick up the sequel after the massive bombings. Roisin is our main character who is a powerful healer. A strange reapiratory infection is spreading which has doctors stumped and even Roisin cant heal themfrom it.
If it isn’t enough that extremists want her and all the unhidden dead, old gods start to come out of the woodwork which history says they shouldn’t interact with but the power they can provide is hard to ignore and Roisin will find herself battling a God to save the world.
This was a great sequel, I feel this had less lag than the first and I enjoyed it more. The characters are realistic with flaws and mistakes and real personalities. Their responses to hardship and danger is realistic and sometimes endearing making the characters grow on you quickly. Well done!
