The Last Keeper of the Light: a dystopian fantasy by Nikki Broadwell

I finished this book about 20 minutes ago and have been sitting here staring at my screen trying to figure out how to write a review that will even come close to the brilliance this book carries.

Let me start with I like dystopian stories but I have a hard time reading them because I get lost in the storyline or sometimes they are a little over the top. This one…WOW is the main thought in my mind.

That right there at the start of this story says it all and the Prophecies of the Hopi Indians that have been passed down through the years..holy moly. I’ll be honest as well, I’ve already googled the Hopi tribe, I just had to know if they were real.

I guess what got me most throughout this whole story was how real it felt, this could sincerely be something that happens and I followed every single word, I was hooked right from the start, it didn’t take a few pages to get there, I was there. Sandal’s journey was one I would not have the strength or courage to ever take and because of all of who she was and became in this story I think she has become my favorite book heroine ever! I’m not even going to go into the storyline, the author has exactly the right amount in her synopsis and it was enough to draw me in and will have a hold of me for quite some time. I know for a fact the thoughts I have after reading this will be thoughts that stay with me from now on.

I have no other words except this author has blown me away, shattered me, and all I can think of is I want to read it again and I need to recommend it so I can talk about it. This was my first book by this author and its safe to say I will be reading any and everything she writes..coming away from the story itself and looking only at the writing talent she is out of this world amazing.

Thank you Thank you Thank You Nikki Broadwell! This might just be my favorite read so far this year!

The Last Keeper of Light is a wonderful dystopian fantasy by Nikki Broadwell. Ms. Broadwell is a new-to-me author who came to my attention when her book showed up on my feed and the beautiful cover caught my attention. The title also intrigued me, so I read the blurb and knew right away that I would enjoy this story- which I did… The book is very original- and has A Hopi Indian prophecy as the ‘inspiration’ for the storyline. It is very creative and imaginative, with magic, secrets, survival, adventure, danger, drama, and some mysteriousness. Ms. Broadwell creates a vivid, fully realised, and believable world in which she set her story. I was transported into the world, experiencing it along with Sandal (and the others)- watching as everything unfolded.
Sandal is in a post-apocalyptic world, where survival is an hour to hour, day by day ordeal. We are told/shown what’s left of the world after everything is destroyed, the dangers that are faced by the survivors, and the difficulties they face. The world as we know it is no more- the grids are down, and everything has gone dark. Millions have died, either from the initial destruction, or later from the starvation, disease, radiation sickness- or natural disasters that followed. Sandal has a big secret that she must protect at all cost, her ‘mission’ is of paramount importance, and her success is crucial- because she literally has the future of the world in her hands.
There is so much more to the story that just a dystopian/post-apocalyptic survival story…. There is a another ‘layer’ threaded through it- one that speaks of magic, lessons to be learned, and most importantly, of hope.
This story switches back and forth from the past to the present as everything is revealed. These transitions are done quite seamlessly and there is no confusion as to ‘when’ we are in the story, or what is happening.
I also enjoyed the thought-provoking nature of the story and the ‘lessons’ that the book holds. Overall, I am quite impressed by my first foray into Ms. Broadwell’s ‘world’ and I am looking forward to reading more of her works in the future.
