There has been a lot of time and energy, as well as research, put into the writing of this book. In this practical guide, T.L. Clark shares tips that she’s learned from her many years of writing. She does so with a bit of humor sprinkled throughout too!!

One of the most helpful tips that I gained from this book was the research that needs to go into the “when” aspect of a historical novel. There is an outline of different time periods that are typically written about, which includes the British set versus the timeline of the United States. I actually felt like I was reading a history novel in and of itself, which I found very enjoyable.

While I do not have aspirations to be a writer, it was nice getting a glimpse inside the brain of a writer and learning some of the groundwork that goes into the novels that I enjoy reading so much! There are so many things I had never considered that goes into the research and reading this book gave me a much better appreciation of the finished products that are published.

“So, we’re getting a good idea of the setting/backdrop for your novel. Like one of those historical portraits where the artist would paint the background in advance and then paint the people in during the sitting. Or a cartoon artist of yesteryear hand-painting beautiful scenery as the backdrop to animate characters upon.
We’re thinking about the era and year, and adding in thoughts of leadership, morality, laws, key events, weather and living conditions.
~ Decide which era captivates you.
~ Look up who the ruler was and if there were any power changes/struggles.
~ See if there are any interesting events which intrigue you.
~ Select your year/s.
~ Think about which season/time of year it is.
~ How did they measure time?
~ Did any major weather activity occur?
~ Were there any natural disasters?
~ Basically, what perils lie in store? What could potentially kill your character/s?
So, now you know your ‘When’, it’s time to dig into ‘What’.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While much of the advice given by various authors was the same or similar, one thing that really stood out was their encouragement to not give up and go with your gut. I had not heard of most of the authors but still found them inspiring and have added several to my TBR list. As someone who enjoys writing myself, I found it inspiring and motivational. Each person went through their own trials and tribulations and proved that you can persevere if you put the work into it. HIGHLY recommended for anyone considering writing your own books.

Such a GREAT read. This is a fabulous place to start if you are looking for answers to some of the hardest questions in writing historical books. This tells you how to go about the research and fact finding processes. Then there are tasks at the end of each section in the book to help you along. This book while not all encompassing in EVERY single resource is a great stepping off point for the beginner historical novelist.

T.L. Clark has put a of lot work into this book to helping others. T.L. has ten years of blood, sweat and tears and writing and publishing experience under her belt. To help showcase her craft. She imparts that knowledge and wisdom to teach authors get the right steps in how to write a historical novel. But that is not to say what works for one will not work for another.
In this book you will find how to set up a checklist/steps/prompts to help you get going. Which aspects of history and historical facts you should research and those to leave out to maximum benefit. Step by step Guide to bring forth the effective ways from start to finish. To tips/hints on the writing process. Which is the best formatting options. How to go about publishing and finally how to put yourself and your book out there.

Although this is a helpful insight to the process you still find what works for you. If only one thing helps, then it was worth it.
Whether you are a new or an established author you never know it may just be some of the information contained in this book that helps you craft and refine your work in putting together the next big thing!

This is such a helpful book, offering guidance and advice to any would be historical romance authors. The author takes you through all of the stages you will encounter on this writing journey and manages it in such an easy and informative way. Tasks are provided periodically throughout the book which help put into practice what you have learnt.
Writing a book is always something I wished I could do and books like this make it feel possible. I really enjoyed seeing the other side of this process and all of the aspects involved. This was a brilliant book and a really helpful tool for anyone ready to start their journey.

In this book over 100 authors share their wisdom, words of advice, and experiences of becoming an author. Some share some very personal stories of how they overcame the obstacles and personal issues to get to where they are today. Many share their stories of how when they first started, they received stacks and stacks of rejection letters from publishers. Many authors recall how friends and family laughed at them or mocked them for wanting to become a writer. Yet, despite all the rejection and the mocking they never gave up their dream of becoming a published author.

Whether it be years ago, in a time prior to Indie publishing, when they were trying to find a traditional publishing house, or now with self publishing options so widely available, there is a lot to learn. These authors share their vast wealth of knowledge and give tips and pointers on what it takes to be an author. Not only are we offered support and words of encouragement, but we are able to learn from mistakes they may have made on their own personal journey.

Of course, the one prevalent theme throughout is to just sit your butt in the chair and write. Whether it is just for a few minutes, or even just writing one sentence, but just write something. They also give tips on finding the time to write when you feel that your life is just too busy. Beyond the words of encouragement are invaluable pointers on not just the writing process but the publishing process as well.

Throughout the book is the common theme of never giving up and of believing in yourself, even when others do not. No matter how many rejection letters you receive do not give up. No matter how many people mock you for your dream do not give up. No matter how little time you have in your day do not give up. No matter what, sit your butt in the chair, write, and never give up on your dreams. As numerous authors said throughout the book, as long as you are writing, you are a writer. Thank you for this book and to these authors for sharing your stories, advice, and words of encouragement, I feel truly inspired!

Great read, excellent guide. This is a really thought out and informative book. I really like how the author laid out the different steps to getting started writing a book, makes it sound so easy. I really thought I could start to write a book after reading this, no kidding. There are links to different website that will help along your publishing and editing journey and tips and tricks on how to research and what to look for in regards to your topic. I also found myself very intrigued by some history I learned along the way in the examples used. This author is funny, I like the little comments left in different areas and very knowledgable and helpful. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to start their adventures in writing historical novels.

This book features 100 different authors who are giving advice to anyone wishing to write a book. It’s a fairly simple read but full of ideas, advice, as well as struggles and challenges one might face during the process of writing and/or publishing a work of art. It’s a showcase of the good, bad, and ugly for lack of a better explanation!

If you write at all, you are a writer. These tips could potentially benefit someone who is writing a dissertation for class, someone looking to improve their writing skills, or someone looking to write a book. The snippets from the authors are generally short, but full of motivation.

The authors cover all aspects of writing from getting started, to marketing, editing, and so many other areas. One of my personal favorite lines was “write one sentence a day” and your work will grow from there. Just get started!!

Some of these authors make rules and others feel like breaking rules already set in the world of authorship. I am currently on a writer’s block right now and I took up this book for personal reasons. It is a very inspiring book, with so many tips and advices from over a 100 authors, it is a very motivating read.
It also changes our perspective towards things and how we approach life. It is always good to get a piece of advice from people who have been through the same journey which one wants to step into.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

If you’ve been authoring for a while, this book will mostly be a refresher for you. A lot of the things mentioned are things prominent in author advice circles, so you hear them often. I think this book would be an excellent resource for aspiring or brand-new authors.

I liked the fact that there is a mix of traditional and indie representation. I also appreciated the book including advice from women’s perspectives, mentions of being an author while parenting, and BIPOC representation.

One thing that was disappointing about the book is that out of 100 authors contributing, there was only one brief sentence that mentioned OCD tendencies, and one brief paragraph mentioning ADHD in a general sense. There was hardly any neurodivergent representation at all. As a person with multiple neurodivergences, I think navigating the neurodivergent way of doing things has been one of my biggest challenges as an author. I’ve learned a lot of things the hard way because there truly isn’t much advice out there for neurodivergent authors. Most advice I’ve heard is geared toward neurotypical brain styles.

Overall, I’d say a great book for newer authors.

You can learn about different types of editors, book publishers, marketing, and subscriptions authors might find helpful. To have all of this information already laid out for you is amazing and will definitely save anyone hunting for these services time.

I’m inspired by individuals such as Winnifred Tataw who, instead of hoarding all the information they’ve learned, would rather share it and help other people save time and effort so they can focus on their goals. I truly find this to be a must read for anyone thinking of writing, publishing, or even doing cover art. I’m sure even a seasoned author could find interesting information within this book. I highly recommend it to anyone in the field or thinking about writing.

I am a librarian/book worm by day, but dreamer by night. I have a handy notebook for writing. This book has enticed my creative side, and magnified my desire to become an author. While I know it is not an easy journey, I have people that will support me. I also have an amazing new resource to help guide me through the process. I am looking forward to putting the steps to the test. As a librarian, I had a basic understanding of some of the information about books, but I love how this book dove into the deep end to give me a better understanding of the process of becoming an author.

Tataw has put together such insightful and thorough details of so many parts of becoming an author and getting the word spread of the author’s wonderful work. Between my daughter and myself, aspiring writers, it was great to see a laid out checklist of the process and resources of where to go for specific services. This is a staple tool in our library for many years to come, whether it is recommending this work to other aspiring writers/authors and within my family. With such a guided map of the process and the publishing industry, you never know what lengths inspiration may take you.

This book takes the advice from 100 different published authors, and shares with those it is meant to help…people who wish to be writers. As someone who has been working off and on to write my own book over the past few years, as I have time to do so, this book had some great tips and advice. I liked that the advice was laid out by different topics, and then by individual authors as well. This book is easy to pick up, read a few things rather it be just to get out of your own head, to learn something new, or to learn from those who have come before you on a specific topic. I would definitely recommend this to new authors or anyone who just wants to hear the advice of others.

The Authorpreneur Yellowpages is an easy and helpful resource for those wanting to publish or seeking new resources. She breaks down the “yellowpages” into editing, formatting, and marketing categories. I picked this up because I’m interested in writing and possibly self-publishing, but I still need help with the moving parts. So you are not good with graphics or the marketing part, there is a group of different companies you can contact. She gives contact information and breaks down what services each company can offer. This is a great way to help people find the assistance they need. I was curious about this because I have read some of her fiction books. I am glad I stumbled across this invaluable resource.

I cannot begin to say enough good things about this book! It is an invaluable resource for anyone who is looking for book and publishing services. The author has included not only contact information but also costs associated for the services she lists. The book is laid out in an easy-to-read format and can easily be read in one sitting. It is a quick read, yet it is jam packed with information. This is an invaluable resource for anyone looking to make their dreams of publishing a book become a reality! I highly recommend this book!

100 authors were given the question, ‘what advice would you give to your younger self?’ The responses vary between writing techniques, goals, genre, reading, traditional and self-publishing, self-doubt, routines, ideas, practices, characters, editing, etc. My favourite section was by Rita Herron who said; ‘instead of writing one book of the heart, I tried to put heart in every book.’ However, I wasn’t particularly fond of the section by Ernest Dempsey. Either way, I recommend this book because it is a really useful read, and there’s such a variety of authors providing advice that it would suit all aspiring authors in one way or another. I’m going to start using these techniques straight away.

This is such an inspiring and motivating book. even if you aren’t wanting to start writing yourself, just working through these authors tips, advice and stories is so interesting. It really makes you reflect on your own life and how to approach things.
I really enjoyed the fact that this book combined the advice of multiple authors. It added a depth to it that other books like this haven’t had for me. I really, thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This book gives the reader and any aspiring writer’s tips, pearls of wisdom and insight by many remarkable writers. Who better could you ask for information to help you along your journey to ensure your dream becomes a reality? Each of them have had many ups and downs and wish they had something like this book to help them along the way.
With this many writers there are often differing opinions on what you should do BUT what worked for one may not work for others. It is not a book where they say you should do it this way or the other way. It is good solid information that has been tested and what worked for them and what didn’t.
If you get something out of the insightful information then that is the bonus of this book.
Dig in to see what information is useful to you to help you on your journey. Who knows it could be one small detail from this book that could make you a world renowned writer.

This is a fantastic resource. As a wannabe writer (I still need to sit my butt down and spill out my story), I am grateful to these authors for sharing these tips. There are so many helpful ideas and thoughts shared. The added benefit is that I’ve even found some new authors to try. As in independent reviewer, I find that the tip to read in the genre you want to right is spot on for me. It has developed into that for me. I read what I enjoy and I find that I have already been using these tips as a reader. There are authors I love because of the way they write and the way they can grab me and keep my attention. The book is very easy to relate to and is a definite resource that will be on my desk. I’ve already ordered a paperback for my desk. If you have any dreams about writing, I highly recommend this book to join your library. Very informative and well put together.

This is a different book for me to read but I’m trying to branch out. I chose to read this non-fiction book because I have a family member who is interested in building his business as an author.

This book is very informative for those who are wanting to branch out into the work of authorship. This is very much set up like a yellow page directory is, chocked full of information on various facets of writing and publishing. There is a checklist, a section describing the publishing process, talk of book covers with a list of resources for designers, and editing services. Other areas include publishing services, black owned and operated businesses, marketing tools, and how to obtain freelance work. Lastly, there is advice on how to find beta readers and how to/why to use an ARC (advanced reader copy). The author of this book ends with encouragement for the future writer.

If you’re looking to get into the world of writing/publishing, this book would be a great resource to have handy!
