Unexpected by Laylah Abrams turned out to be quite the unexpected read- in a great way. With such an unassuming, although somewhat charming cover, I really didn’t know what to expect – but the blurb sounded promising, so I snapped up a copy and set off to explore.
What I discovered was a fun story with a bit of a fairytale-esque vibe to it. With plenty to keep me flipping the pages of this feel-good romance.
-Celebrity heiress meets waiter/struggling artist ✔
-Different worlds collide ✔
-Opposites attract ✔
-finding love unexpectedly ✔
-Sweet story ✔
-chemistry ✔
-Character growth and development continues over the course of the story ✔
-a dash of drama ✔
-a sprinkle of angst ✔
-Light-hearted ✔
-Memorable ✔
This is my first read by Ms. Abrams, but after enjoying this story more than I expected, it certainly won’t be my last.
Looking forward to seeing what Ms. Abrams does next.

Six years ago, I promised my friend Kellan that I’d never mess around with his little brother. I accepted it. I didn’t regret it, and I didn’t think twice about it. Milo Sterling—the good student, perfect son, and promising dancer—was off limits.

But that was before.

Before we went away to college. Before Kellan died. Before I flunked out of school.

Now, I’m back home, and Milo’s different. He’s quieter and colder, no longer a boy but a man. And that hurt in his eyes? I put it there the night I failed to save Kellan. I have a lot to make up for. Falling for Milo, no matter how much I want him, would be one more thing to add to my list.

But promises are meant to be broken, and if there’s one thing I’m bad at, it’s being good.

Orenda (The Latitude Series Book #2) by T.S. Simons – Review by Angela Hayes

Orenda (The Latitude Series Book 2)Orenda by T.S. Simons
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Stars

Orenda is the second book in The Latitude series by T.S. Simons. This story/series is an extension of the Antipodes series, and is quite an intriguing read.
As with the rest of the series, this is a dystopian, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi story with action, adventure, romance, challenges, danger, drama, tension, suspense, surprising developments, mystery, emotion, family, friendship, community, betrayal, tragedy, revenge, and more.
As expected, Ms. Simons once again put her characters to the test. Caitlin and Geo take us along on their adventures as they work towards community harmony- but things aren’t going to be smooth sailing- especially when they get bind-sided by an old enemy putting them, and everything they’ve worked so hard for, at risk.
Looking forward to seeing what the next book has in store for us!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, T.S. Simons!

I Am A Bold Asian Boy: A Positive Affirmations Book For Asian Boys by Yobe Qiu is a cute and inspiring book that teaches children the benefits of daily affirmations. And although this is aimed at Asian boys- I think the affirmations are applicable to all children, with a little re-wording.
The affirmations are accompanied by some seriously cute, charming, interesting, and colourful illustrations that easily captures the reader’s attention, whilst also engaging the imagination, and thus helping to reinforce the affirmations..
Affirmations are a great way to build confidence, mindfulness, and possibility. This is full of many wonderful affirmations that will help nurture happier children.

“I’m a brilliant Asian boy
I’m curious and love to learn
I know it’s ok to be wrong
I can always take multiple turns.”

“I’m a balanced Asian boy
I’m excited for what my day brings
From school to play to family
I can juggle many things.”

This is an imaginative, fun, engaging, and enjoyable children’s picture book that helps develop confidence.

Unexpected by Laylah Abrams – Review by Beverly Finnie

UnexpectedUnexpected by Laylah Abrams
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How many romances have we read where one character is wealthy and one is living in poverty? How many of those are the billionaire male and the struggling female?
Well Unexpected is the story mentioned in the first question, but the roles in the 2nd question are reversed. The author put together a sweet heartbreaking story of two people who see one another but let things hold them back from who they truly are. The growth displayed within the 2 main characters was frustrating at times and beautiful at others.
Claire is a socialite that wishes to be more than a pretty face. A former model who has extensive business zeal and knowledge in engineering & programming, but no one sees it. They see what she wants them to see. The many masks she uses to navigate a very publicized life. Thanks to the paparazzi. That is until she meets Nick, her waiter, a one off stranger. Yet this stranger can see right through her masks to who she truly is. Well at least the parts she will share. She wants him but could she ever really have him as more than just a fling. He’s an artist that is below her social standing, but she doesn’t want to let him go.
Nick never expected Claire to ever show an interest in him. What started as a fling turned out to be a lot more. With a fear of losing his grad school scholarship due to his lack of/confusing paintings feelings. Claire’s presence in his life even as a random night here and random night there has had a profound impact on his work. She’s his muse. He’s taking risks, using bold colors and strokes, and not being as precise and detailed as previously perfect his landscapes used to be. And those higher ups/visitors at school are starting to notice.
However the social standing between the two of them is a glaring fact, that’s staring them in the face.
Can they get past it?
Will they finally admit how they truly feel about one another?
So many questions and plenty of answers. No romance is ever just pretty with no conflict. It’s how the conflict is handled that determines the outcome. The conflict in this one is heartbreaking because you as the reader want these two to defy the odds, you’re rooting for them.. And the need to continue to see what happens will have you saying “just one more chapter” when you have something to do and should be going to bed.
Me, well I’m going to be looking for other works by this author.
You will be making sure you carve out a window to read the book in one shot. Because you won’t want to put it down. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Knight In Peril (A Jorja Knight Private Investigator Mystery) by Alice Bienia – Review by Jennifer Crain

Knight In Peril (A Jorja Knight Private Investigator Mystery #6)Knight In Peril by Alice Bienia
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“A Knight in Peril” by Alice Bienia is a gripping and thrilling mystery that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The story centers around PI Jorja Knight, who arrives in Istanbul only to discover that her best friend Gabriella has vanished. As Jorja delves deeper into the case, she is thrust into a dangerous world of lies, secrets, and corruption.

One of the strongest aspects of this book is its atmospheric setting in Istanbul. Bienia’s vivid descriptions bring the ancient city to life, immersing readers in its rich history and mysterious allure. The author has clearly done her research, and the attention to detail shines through in the way she portrays Istanbul’s dark underbelly. Readers will feel as though they are walking the streets alongside Jorja, navigating the twists and turns of the city. And humor along the way, for example, a character who speaks Turkish and English can’t think of a “bucket list” and calls it a “pail list,” lightening the mood. (Side note- I also learned about another version of Cliff’s Notes, called Cole’s Note!).

The pacing of the story is excellent, with Bienia expertly balancing moments of high tension with quieter, introspective scenes. The sense of urgency is palpable as Jorja races against time to find her missing friend. The plot is filled with unexpected twists and turns that will keep readers guessing until the very end, making it a truly gripping mystery thriller.

Knight In The Museum (Jorja Knight Private Investigator Mystery Series Book 5) by Alice Bienia – Review by

Knight In The Museum (Jorja Knight #5)Knight In The Museum by Alice Bienia
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Knight In The Museum” by Alice Bienia is a gripping installment in the Jorja Knight Private Investigator Mystery series, my first one by the author but definitely can be read as a stand alone. In this book, Jorja takes on a case involving the death of a former police officer that was deemed an accident but has left lingering questions for his daughter. As Jorja delves into the case, she uncovers another suspicious death and a connection to a cursed, missing artifact.

One of the standout aspects of this book is the strong and gutsy heroine, Jorja Knight. She is a determined and resourceful investigator who will stop at nothing to find the truth. Her persistence and unwavering commitment to her clients make her an engaging and relatable protagonist. Readers will find themselves rooting for her as she navigates the dangers and challenges of her investigation.

The mystery itself is complex and well-crafted, with twists and turns that keep readers guessing until the end. Bienia does an excellent job of slowly unraveling the layers of the case and building suspense. I also enjoyed the humor thrown in, for example, “Traders of the Lost Ark.” The connection to the cursed artifact adds an intriguing supernatural element to the story, adding another layer of mystery and intrigue.

Furthermore, the setting of the badlands in Alberta, Canada, adds a unique and atmospheric backdrop to the story. Bienia’s descriptions bring the landscape to life, creating a vivid and immersive reading experience. The author’s attention to detail shines through in the way she depicts the setting and adds depth to the overall story.

Encounters With Old Coyote by Laura Koerber – Review by Jennifer Crain

Encounters with Old CoyoteEncounters with Old Coyote by Laura Koerber
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Encounters of Old Coyote by Laura Koerber is a unique and thought-provoking novel that explores the nature of life, death, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. The story follows Andrea, a skeptic who finds herself as a ghost in the desert after her death. Confused and seeking answers about the existence of God, Andrea encounters a supernatural being in the form of a coyote.

Koerber’s writing style is engaging and conversational, allowing readers to easily connect with the characters and their experiences. The dynamic between Andrea and Coyote is particularly captivating, as they engage in discussions about spirituality, existence, and the role of storytelling.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the book is the way it weaves together different stories and anecdotes. Andrea and Coyote share tales about mundane experiences, such as finding spiders in the bathroom or losing a bra at a truck stop, as well as more profound subjects like dark matter and the fifth force. These stories serve a dual purpose, not only entertaining readers but also conveying deeper messages about life’s mysteries and the human experience.

The novel also touches upon themes of interconnectedness and the ways in which seemingly unrelated events can be linked. Through Andrea’s encounters with Coyote, she begins to understand that everything is connected in some way, and that stories are an essential tool for humans to make sense of the world around them.

While the book explores weighty topics, it maintains a light and humorous tone throughout (loved the line about ghosts being mostly cows or horses or pigs that have “fucked up” lives- coyote doesn’t think happy animals would become ghosts!). I would recommend reading it!

Christmas CoveChristmas Cove by Sarah Dressler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a classic holiday romance and I loved every minute of it! There was even an unexpected plot twist. America was not expecting what she got when she arrived in Christmas Cove on an assignment. She was reluctant to go but gave up when she kept getting pushed in that direction by circumstances out of her control. Which all makes the story that much better. There is everything you would get from a Hallmark movie in the book including some mystery and of course some holiday romance! I love these stories that make you want to drink something hot and sit with a fuzzy blanket on the couch!

Orenda (The Latitude Series Book 2)Orenda by T.S. Simons
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Latitude series, which in turn is a follow-on series to the Antipodes series. Following on from the first book, this follows Caitlin and Gio. I would highly recommend reading the book prior to this one at the very least before starting this one.
Once again this was a well written story, flowing nicely an creating an intriguing world to step into. The complex characters are also well-written, they are developed well and draw you into their lives to the point you need to know what will happen to them next. The author has a great ability to suck you in and making you emotionally invested before you even realise it.
I enjoyed the developments in the story, the resurfacing of characters and dangers and seeing how as the characters change and develop, so do the solutions and thought processes. The events were made to feel believable and through provoking at times. It, along with the rest of the series is sure to be one that stays with me and I look forward to where we are taken next.

Unexpected by Laylah Abrams – Review by Jennifer Gordon

UnexpectedUnexpected by Laylah Abrams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was an enjoyable and engaging romance with a modern fairytale feel to it which kept me happily turning the pages. Claire Morgan is a Celebutante who plays the air-headed-heiress that the gossip sites expect, to perfection. People are much more interested in her designer gowns and love life, then they are about her degrees in business and computer science. Nick is a struggling artist who works as a waiter and who’s worrying that his grad school scholarship is in jeopardy, due to his creative slump. Claire and Nick meet when Claire and her friends arrive at the restaurant where Nick works, at closing time. The pair discover they have a lot in common and they start what they thought, would be a meaningless fling. Nick spurs Claire towards the tech career she’s always wanted and she inspires his art. However, they are both too good at putting on an act and at hiding their growing feelings, and will need to trust in one another if there relationship is to develop and last. I loved the chemistry between Nick and Claire, and how their relationship developed throughout the story. The storyline flowed well and I found this to be a heartwarming and entertaining romance.

The Befallen (The Unsung and The Wolf Duology) by Cambria Williams – Review by Jenni Bishop

The BefallenThe Befallen by Cambria Williams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Befallen is a poignant story and is Cambria Williams charming debut dark fantasy tale. It is a unique and engaging tale that is cleverly crafted together.
It is a story with all the feels, a story of faith and longing. Where ones worth and place in the world is what our MC’s are longing to find. One a reluctant drunk and moody/grumpy Knight Sir Tolvar needs redemption from past. The other a young woman Sloane has had to overcome so much in her life. She has a disability and just wants to be seen as something more than a cripple, to mean something.
When Sir grumpy meets Sloane, he is inspired to become a better man and decides to help her on finding a cure for the curse that has stolen her whole world from her.
These wonderful characters are well written and will make your heart melt and I was rooting for them against their fight to stop the Befallen before it destroys more. Other characters were just as good.
I look forward to more from Cambria.

Renewed (Fateful Justice Series) by Sara Vinduska – Review by Jenni Bishop

Renewed (Fateful Justice Book 6)Renewed by Sara Vinduska
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Renewed is the sixth exciting action-packed book in the Fateful Justice series by Sara Vinduska. Each book can be read as a standalone and it does not feel like I missed out on anything.
The book is well-written and the characters that are well developed, and with flaws and weaknesses that make them feel real. It is a sexy Cowboy suspense romantic tale that will have you falling in love with the characters and pages turning at the turn of events.
I enjoy Sara’s writing style making the story easy to read as it flowed well.
Renewed has an interesting storyline, a good plot and is fast paced with enough twists to keep you glued to the pages. With plenty of romance, action, suspense, danger, intrigue, mystery, dark secrets and drama there is something for everyone to enjoy.
I am not going to share details as I think you should discover it all on your own.
If you are a fan of dangerous romantic suspense, you will enjoy this book. I look forward to reading more in the series.

The Catford Catastrophe Zone by Petra Jacob – Review by Amanda Swindle

The Catford Catastrophe ZoneThe Catford Catastrophe Zone by Petra Jacob
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Catford Catastrophe Zone is a dystopian sci-fi book set nearly 100 years in the future. The year is 2120 and Frankie is an undercover policewoman in London and she is tasked with infiltrating a group of rebels in the Poverty Zone. As you can imagine, that area is exactly what it sounds like…a place of nightmares, where the worst of society delves. Not only are the people more rugged and conditioned, even the plants are dangerous and creatures lurk. The deeper she gets, the more “over her head” things become. It is not often I can say that I have never read anything like that before, but that is true with this one. It has many layers and the characters and politics are believable, and I will be checking out some of the other works by Petra Jacob.

Knight In Peril (A Jorja Knight Private Investigator Mystery) by Alice Bienia – Review by Jenni Bishop

Knight In Peril (A Jorja Knight Private Investigator Mystery #6)Knight In Peril by Alice Bienia
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 stars

Knight In Peril is book 5 of the Jorja Knight Private Investigator Mystery Series. The books can be read as standalones but start from the beginning as you gain so much insight into our lead character Jorja Knight.
This suspenseful tale pulls you in to the thrilling mystery and dangerous world that Jorja finds herself ensnared in right from the start. It is a dark and gritty world of secrets and lies, gluttony and bribery, corrupt politicians and people who will stop at nothing to get what they want.
Jorja Knight is independent, feisty, a no-nonsense straight shooter but even she is faces fear as she finds herself in a race against time in the dark underbelly of a foreign country to find the one person that means the world to her before time runs out.
Knight In Peril is a fast-paced, page-turner that had me staying up reading late into the night.
Will they escape with their lives, or will they both be lost to a world where no one cares?
If you are looking for a good book to read, then look no further than this series.

Shadowed Agenda: An Enemies to Lovers Action-Packed Romantic Suspense Thriller (Shadow Defense Security Series) by Mavery Ellscott – Review by Jenni Bishop

Shadowed Agenda: An Enemies to Lovers Action-Packed Romantic Suspense Thriller (Shadow Defense Security Series Book 2)Shadowed Agenda: An Enemies to Lovers Action-Packed Romantic Suspense Thriller by Mavery Ellscott
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OMG. I loved the first book Shadowed Obsession but Shadowed Agenda is just as good if not better. I said before that this is an author to watch, and I still think that. Each book in the series can be read as standalones but I encourage you to read them in order because the characters interchange.
I love books with Navy Seals, Security protection books and the like, as I love the adrenaline rush and strong alpha males in protective mode and equally strong female leads.
Shadowed Agenda is the second book in the amazing Shadow Defense Security series by Mavery Ellscott.
This engrossing slow burn read is an Enemies to Lovers romantic tale that is one thrilling ride with twisty turns keep the pages turning. What happens when the stakes just keep on getting higher? A tension filled fast-paced tale that will have your heart rate elevated and on the edge of your seat.
There is a lot going on in this book. It is a thrilling tale that is full of drama, treachery, deceit, danger, action, intrigue, grit, suspicions, attraction and a touch of humour.
The only way the story could have gotten any better is if there was a bit more “open” heat in the sex scenes and it was told in dual POV (my favourite way to narrate a story) but these are my preferences.
The plot and the characters are well developed, well written, and interesting. I loved the push pull of the relationship and the sexual tension between them. Shadowed Agenda is captivating and highly entertaining and should be on peoples TBR list.
It is kill or be killed in this high stake’s tale.
I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Orenda (The Latitude Series) by T.S. Simons – Review by Jenni Bishop

Orenda (The Latitude Series Book 2)Orenda by T.S. Simons
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 stars
Orenda is the second book in The Latitude series. It is the sequel to The 45th Parallel which is an extension on the Antipodes series. It is a Sci Fi story with supernatural elements.
The principals and beliefs behind Orenda are thought provoking and something that many have theorised and adhered to past and present, for eons and will live on eons in the future. I was intrigued and interesting to see T.S. associate it to this series.
Tanya clever writing draws you in and makes you invested in what happens with the characters their hopes, their dreams, their struggles. Expect the unexpected when reading her books but that makes it even more intriguing. There is always something new and exciting that comes to light.
It is an even bigger journey that could have long standing effects for everyone. Emotions run high as old enemies resurface and everything is in peril, and Caitlin must fight for what they love most.
I can’t wait to see what comes next.
