The Progeny Assassin: A Tarnished Lands Story (Forgotten Woods Book 2) by P.A. Wikoff was a fast moving, engaging, intrilling read that had me hooked from start to finish.

Not my first read by this author or in this series, but even though this is book two, it reads as a standalone. So if you haven’t read that first book, no worries, but I do suggest reading it as it does set the stage for this dark, deadly world. That and, it’s a pretty amazing book in its own right.

This book takes place in another part of the Tarnished lands. Following our MC Lara, a deadly feathered-folk warrior and, her journey towards finding her true place in that hellish world. I must say right away I liked Lara. There was just something.. there about her. I can’t explain it, because I’ll get too much into her, and I don’t want to spoil anything. Let just say, she’s what all female protagonist should inspire to be.

Rich with the dark tones that were present in that first book, the writing is just as sinister and the detail just as darkly picturesque, painting the horror that is the Tarnished Lands. This original thriller is on a different level of good, and I’m stressing to you, that you need this book in your lives. Not just this book, but the first as well.

With that said I’m going to leave you with my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval.

Happy Reading

5 out of 5 stars

The story The Progeny Assassin: A Tarnished Lands Story (Forgotten Woods Book 2) by P.A. Wikoff is a wonderful fantasy book that I loved reading. It is a story that has action and adventure. I enjoyed reading about the character of Lara. She is a feathered-folk who finds herself on a journey. She is both interesting and intriguing. Lara is a character that has questions and soon finds that the journey she is taking is not what she expected. She faces conflicts. There are times of danger and discovery. There is an amazing job of world building. The story is detail oriented and I felt like I was right there with Lara on her journey, seeing and feeling what she did. Read this story to find out all about what happens on Lara’s journey. This is a book that once I started reading hooked me in and I found myself lost in the story. I enjoyed this book just as much as the first one. I look forward to reading the next story in the series.

I jumped into this book quickly. What a fantastic new world the author has created. Complex and detailed, this dystopian fantasy felt realistic and relatable. The author gives the main character a great voice. The universe created for these characters is one I look forward to visiting again very soon.

The Progeny Assassin: A Tarnished Lands Story (Forgotten Woods Series Book #2) by P.A. Wikoff – Review by Angela Hayes

The Progeny Assassin: A Tarnished Lands StoryThe Progeny Assassin: A Tarnished Lands Story by P.A. Wikoff
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Her soot-covered body blends perfectly with the charredscape, hiding her tough bark-like skin against the wicked wreckage. Her kind walks and talks like humans do, only with a particularly distinguishing characteristic—delicate feathers that sprout from her body instead of hair. Though she has no way of hiding her violet eyes, her soft silver feathers blend nicely with her dark disguise. This feature gives the feathered-folk an almost symphonic sound when a breeze travels through the forest, like a meadow of foxtails brushing up against each other on a spring afternoon, although Lara has never known the swishing sound or the feeling it evokes. It died alongside the trees when the forest lost its breath. Her people used to believe that the wind would cleanse the nightmares that tainted their souls. However, her master says that the wind never took away the fears, but rather, brought everyone else’s to them to play out its cruelty. Lara doesn’t know what to believe, but in either case, the breeze no longer blows here since the leaves stopped growing to cheer on its presence with their rustling applause. Movements are difficult to hide in a place so still. Like hearing moaning in a graveyard, it puts you on edge. If it weren’t for the sun’s crusade in the sky, one might think that time had perished alongside everything else.”

The Progeny Assassin is A Tarnished Lands Story and the second book in the Forgotten Woods Series By P.A Wikoff. This is another interesting and original fantasy full of action, adventure, drama, unique creatures/beings, magic, some violence, drama, despair, discoveries, darkness & light, renewal, hope, and much more. As with the first book, this story has a bit of dark tone to it, giving it the feel of an epic D & D story/game. But mostly this it is a story of revelations & self-discovery and how Lara finds her true purpose in the Tarnished Lands. This is my favourite of the series, so far. I was hooked right from the beginning and didn’t put it down until I’d read every word! As with the first book, this is vividly descriptive, and intricately detailed- which brings this fantastical tale and world into ‘being’.
A worthy addition to this wonderful series. So, if you love swords and sorcery, D & D, original and intriguing fantasy, and quirky/unique characters- then this book should be on your TBR.
Bring on Book #3, “The Mad Wizard”!

Thank you, Mr. Wikoff!

This book can be read as a standalone but I highly suggest reading the first book, a must read series! I love how this author takes me on a magical adventure that is creative and engaging. The characters are creative and they pulled me into their magical world and made me feel as if I was right there with them. Lara has been protecting what is left of the dying land. What will happen when her master turns up missing and she gets the adventure that she wasn’t expecting? A must read!

Lara is a young and deadly feathered-folk who protects what is left of a dying land. Burnt-out trees and ashen soil are all that remain of the forgotten forest. After years of becoming complacent, Lara seeks anything to break the routine. And when her master goes missing, she finds the adventure she’s been longing for, only it isn’t at all as she expected.
This the second story in The Tarnished Lands series. It can be read without reading the first book, “The Harrowed Half-Breed.”

About The Tarnished Lands: In the aftermath of the utopian regime that ruled for over a millennium, famine, chaos, murder and deceit reign in lieu of balance. The pendulum now swings in favor of disorder. The fierce strong-arm the weak, cowards lurk in the shadows like rats, and the wicked take everything that’s left over. This is no longer a place for good intentions; this is a place of survival.

Its always nice to step outside your favorite genre and read something new. This book is a refreshing change from my normal genre. I found it to be a very unique and refreshing read. The world built by this author is very original and well voiced.

I found the book to be filled with drama and twists and turns. The whole story was filleI d with
unique characters. I like how it began with Kit and turned into Barne’s story. I was hooked from page one and couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. I really look forward to reading more from this author and hopefully this series.

The Harrowed Half-Breed: A Tarnished Lands Story (Forgotten Woods, #1)The Harrowed Half-Breed: A Tarnished Lands Story by P.A. Wikoff
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Harrowed Half-Breed is the first book in the Forgotten Wood Boook by P.A. Wikoff is a dark fantasy that captured me from the first work. Wikoff has an amazing ability to write about different creatures but keep the eye on the main characters of humans and feather-folk. His imagery is intrigue so you can imagine the scenery and therefore can place the creatures inside the scenery. This story is a page turned that will want you to keep reading until the last word. This story is about the feather-folk. They treasured the land and never took from it more than necessary. The humans pilfered the world to have more than what they needed to show dominance in the land. Barne is the main character who is a half-breed. He is trying to fit in the best he can. This is the coming of age part of the book. We see Barne and what he has to go through just to be happy. I enjoyed reading about Barne. It makes you hopeful for the future. Will you see Barne in a better place than he was at the start of the story? You will have to read it to find out.

The Harrowed Half-Breed: A Tarnished Lands Story (Forgotten Woods, #1)The Harrowed Half-Breed: A Tarnished Lands Story by P.A. Wikoff
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Harrowed Half-Breed by P.A. Wikoff is a unique dark fantasy story set in a dismal world. There are strange creatures who are at war with humans and are quite a violent race even amongst themselves. It was quite gruesome at times but P.A. has done a great job of building and weaving the written word to fully explore all sides of the characters and the world in which they live. But it was not all doom and gloom, there are moments in time where there was things that will make you laugh.

As a fantasy lover I would recommend this book to anyone who likes things a little bit darker

The Harrowed Half-Breed: A Tarnished Lands Story (Forgotten Woods, #1)The Harrowed Half-Breed: A Tarnished Lands Story by P.A. Wikoff
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Harrowed Half Breed is A Tarnished Lands Story and the first book in the Forgotten Woods Series By P.A Wikoff. This is my first read by Mr. Wikoff, so I wasn’t sure what I would find when I began reading. The story is an interesting and original fantasy that has lots of action, adventure, drama, unique creatures/beings, magic, and some violence. The story has a dark tone to it and feels a lot like a D & D story/game. But mostly it is a story of self-discovery and a ‘coming of age’.
In the story we meet many characters, all of which play a part in making this story interesting- Barne, Valara, Kip, Nanis, Hogar, Neff, Seyu, and many others, help to bring the story alive. We explore the Tarnished Lands and meet the feathered folk- and discover a lot about their history and struggles.

“The feathered-folk had resided in the wildwoods for greater than a thousand years. They lived off nature’s gifts while never upsetting the symbiosis. It was a sacred way of life passed down from each generation.
Soon the humans found value in the forest’s wood and sought to cut down the very lands that provided for the folk. Human greed was a flaw that flowed deeply within their blood; they couldn’t help it any more than they could help breathing or blinking.
While the humans pilfered more than necessary, the trees bled dark sap, showing their displeasure.
As the self-appointed wardens of the forest, the feathered-folk raged war against the humans. Peace was in their nature, though you wouldn’t know it as of late. There hadn’t always been conflict between the two bloodlines, although as of the last couple years, it was a daily struggle. With each fallen warrior, contention spoiled their kind nature and poisoned their disposition.”

This is a very short and easy read, I read it in one sitting. Mr. Wikoff has a descriptive and detailed style, which gave the story a rich texture and feel. If you love swords and sorcery, D & D, original and interesting fantasy, and quirky/unique characters- then this book should be part of your collection.
There is a link at the end of the book to a D & D Module called “Breaking the Peace”- which is set before The Harrowed Half Breed.
Looking forward to “The Progeny Assassin!”, Book #2 in the series.

Thank you, Mr. Wikoff!
