My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was a very interesting read, based far into the future where the world is very technologically advanced. The world is split into those two areas, the one where everyone works hard and lives richly. Then there is the other area where the people who are deemed lazy, sickly, or just incompetent or bad are sent, where they live impoverished and are exposed to so many illnesses and creatures that are poisonous. Frankie is an undercover police officer who dreams of becoming a superhero and is given advanced technology to become a superhuman. She is sent on a mission in the Catford Zone where the people are impoverished, but there are suspected rebels planning something that needs to be discovered and stopped. Frankie goes on the mission she is asked to take on but has no idea what kind of situation she is being sent to; it is far worse than her worst nightmares. She must learn to adjust to the living situation that she is thrown into while doing her job without being discovered by her roommates or any of the other residents. Will Frankie be able to solve the mystery she was sent to uncover, or will the environment kill her first? This is a great scientific thriller that has surprises around every corner.

The Catford Catastrophe Zone by Petra Jacob sounded so interesting from the description and sounded like nothing I had read lately. Petra was a new to me author so I wasn’t sure what to expect, and she sounds like a very diverse author. She was able to deliver a super unique story with this well-developed, well thought out, Dystopian, sci-fi, thriller, and I enjoyed this tale immensely.

This was the first book I had picked up from this author, and it was an incredible start! I am a big fan of all things sci-fi, so this dystopian adventure was right up my alley. It definitely kept me guessing the whole way through as the author threw curve balls every so often. I really loved the characters because they didn’t feel like your typical, run of the mill sci-fi gang. They were unique yet relatable and didn’t always behave in a way I could see coming. The author did an amazing job weaving their dark humor into the story as well. I am on my way to pick up more books by Petra. I highly recommend you pick this one up and enjoy the futuristic thriller!

I did enjoy this book, it was interesting. The world created by the author was very different and I found myself drawn into the imagery. The story seemed to draw on current events and experiences then took us down a path of a possible future should we continue down the path we are traveling. It really was a scary journey and one I hope does not come to pass. I recommend this book and will definitely read further novels by this author.

If you are looking for a dystopian thriller full of mystery, intrigue, and a strong female character, then this is for you.

The Catford Catastrophe Zone by Petra Jacob follows Frankie, who dreams of being promoted from undercover police officer to DNA-enhanced crime fighter. Unfortunately for her, she needs to complete one more mission to prove she’s got what it takes. Will Frankie be able to investigate the mysterious rebels and solve the mystery, or will she be unable to escape the Catford Zone?

I honestly had no idea what I was getting into with this novel but was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was pulled in. This book was jam-packed with quirky yet oddly realistic characters. The author did a great job building a world and a story that was not only fun to read but thought-provoking as well.

Happy Reading!

Frankie is a young woman who works as an undercover police officer in London in 2120 in a world where technology rules and everyone has enhancements implanted into their bodies, or at least they do in the north of London, however, those in the south have something similar, however, they are more rudimentary and not always of the best quality. These enhancements are now so integral to Frankie’s life and the lives of those around her that it is automatic to use them, but like everyone else, she wants more.

Frankie has just finished a mission and wants nothing more than to ger the go ahead that her application to be one of the DNA enhanced crime fighters has been approved, but unfortunately, she has to do one more mission before she can get there, but this mission is not exactly what she was hoping for, she has to go into a poverty zone and infiltrate a group of rebels. Frankie is completely unimpressed by this, but will do anything to attain her dream, so when she is prepared, she packs a suitcase and is dropped off at the lift to the poverty zone with just rudimentary clothing, a map and an address, but what she finds when she arrives is worse than she could ever imagine.

The living conditions, the flora, fauna and people have all been understated, they border on inhumane and the number of mutations and dilapidation she sees astounds her, but when she meets her housemates, she is convinced that they cannot be the threat they have been made out to be. As Frankie reports to her superiors, the more she realises that she is stuck there for the long term, however, the more time she spends investigating and figuring out her housemates, the more confused she becomes, especially when she finds out that it isn’t safe to go to ground level, but not why, so she digs and the more secrets she uncovers, the more shocks she finds, but will she ever be able to return to her former life after seeing the poverty zones for herself, or will she succumb to the environment first? This is a sci-fi adventure where nothing is as it seems, and danger surrounds the inhabitants of this changed city as secrets are uncovered, lies are told and truths are revealed in this twisted version of a possible future.

This book was good. It showed us what our future could be, technology wise anyways. Frankie wants to be a superhero, but in order to do that she has to go to a poverty zone. She knows whoever goes there never comes back. Does she pass the test? Is she finally able to be a superhero?

The Catford Catastrophe Zone is a dystopian sci-fi book set nearly 100 years in the future. The year is 2120 and Frankie is an undercover policewoman in London and she is tasked with infiltrating a group of rebels in the Poverty Zone. As you can imagine, that area is exactly what it sounds like…a place of nightmares, where the worst of society delves. Not only are the people more rugged and conditioned, even the plants are dangerous and creatures lurk. The deeper she gets, the more “over her head” things become. It is not often I can say that I have never read anything like that before, but that is true with this one. It has many layers and the characters and politics are believable, and I will be checking out some of the other works by Petra Jacob.

Well this was a wild ride of a dystopian future! I had not read previous books from this author, but I will absolutely be checking more of her works out in the future. She weaves together a grim future, where apps and programming are inserted into people’s brains directly and those that can’t work are thrown into the Catford Zone, a grim area where people are trapped with killer plants, weird bugs, and very little to eat. Our protagonist, Frankie, is sent to the Zone, in order to infiltrate concerns of an uprising and learn more about the rebels in charge of it. The author did a great job of creating memorable characters and unveiling their backgrounds and unique character traits in a way that felt organic and real. The story definitely had a variety of twists and turns and I honestly couldn’t anticipate how the story would end. If you are looking for a story that is a fairly realistic scfi dystopian read, this is the book for you.

This is my first time picking up a book by this author Petra Jacob. The Catford Catastrophe Zone was a very unique telling about a dystopian future that was set in the not far off year of 2120, and how technology plays a part in it? Although dystopian future books aren’t my go to reads.( I think the last full series was the divergent series) But the synopsis and cover photo really intrigued me to give this book a shot. I think this Author did a great job at world and character building. It was so well written that I was not left confused And was able to visualize everything she was describing🥰 I really enjoyed the sci-fi thriller nature with .the DNA-enhanced crime fighter, dangerous adventure, and their fight for survival! This book really kept my attention the WHOLE time. I loved it ! I am so looking forward to reading for stories by Petra Jacob 🥰🥰

This is a fantastic dystopian story with a thrilling mysterious sci-fi adventure. In fact, it gave me a bit of a Blade Runner, High Castle, Mortal Engines vibes which I enjoyed.

The futuristic story follows Frankie who is desperate to get the big promotion at work. Up to that point she only received subtle hints of the possibility of a promotion. Yet when she finds her employer is desperate for someone to go undercover for a risky secret mission, she reluctantly agrees to visit the zone filled with the sick and poverty stricken citizens that never seem to make it back to the somewhat safer zones.

The moment she enters the Catford Zone, she immediately finds herself surrounded by a decomposing world in shambles, just like the withering population who have been long forgotten for those outside of the zone. Initially Frankie is paralyzed by the shock of her new surroundings. Then she decides to investigate and learn more about her housemates and how things work in her new surroundings. While she tries to do this and find something sufficiently interesting for her boss to allow her to return home she embarks on an incredible journey that she in no way could have dreamt of until now.

This was a good mind trip with an extremely well illustrated description of Frankie’s world. I enjoyed the eccentric and entertaining characters, flaws and all. I highly recommend this book.

I really want to know and discover more about this amazing world that Ms. Jacob created. I hope there is a continuation! I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes dystopian futuristic novels. Frankie is an undercover officer in London in the year 2120. AI tech is everywhere and everyone who can afford it has technology implanted in their brains. When she is forced to go undercover into a “poverty zone”, the only thing that keeps Frankie moving forward with the plan is that she’s been promised a promotion. But the mission is a fiasco from the beginning and Frankie fears she may never make it out of the Catford Zone. This is a sci-fi, dystopian story with plenty of thrills.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was an interesting dystopian sci-fi read. The author did an incredible job of turning our future into something completely unrecognisable but not so far out of the realm of being believable especially with the advances in technology we have happening all the time. Who’s to know for certain that humans wouldn’t be able to access apps and entertainment from a chip implanted into them. But with technology like that we also lead ourselves with the danger of being controlled by the same implants used to make our lives easier and better.

We are with Frankie in this book. Frankie desperately wants to become a superhero so she spends her life completing missions to earn her spot on that elite team. This is the mission that will guarantee her that spot. However she needs to take a trip into a world so far away from her protected world. She needs to go into the poverty zone to spy on a possible group of people who are looking to rebel. The problem is Frankie knows that when people go to the poverty zone they don’t return.
As much as she wants to refuse she can’t and so she finds herself in a dark place which is worse than anything she ever imagined. With dangerous creatures and plants the humans inhabiting the space become the least of Frankie’s worries. It is complete madness full of chaos as everyone struggles to survive.
Are the people she’s been sent to spy on really rebels trying to cause trouble or are they just normal people struggling to survive in the dark place they have found themselves?
Will Frankie ever return to her life? And will she finally get the position promised to her?
As she learns more about the people in the area, their stories and their secrets will she be able to survive against all the odds stacked against her.
This was a gripping read that I couldn’t put down. I will definately be looking for more from this author as this is the first book i have read and I really enjoyed it.

The Catford Catastrophe Zone by Petra Jacob was a lot more intriguing than I expected. I mean I knew it would be good because I was quite engrossed by Ms. Jacob’s ‘Peddling Doomsday’ story- but this book is even better.
This has so many great ingredients- from a dystopian theme, futuristic setting, sci-fi elements, thriller-esque details, dramatic developments, a little satire, secrets, agendas, politics, social commentary, rebellion/rebels, mutants, danger, subterfuge, some action, adventure, a DNA-enhanced crime fighter, some mayhem, interesting characters, and a fight for survival.
The story wasn’t what I was expecting, in a great way. It was very intriguing, well-developed, and thought-provoking- but as expected from reading her previous book, Ms. Jacob has also set the tension and anticipation on high. The plot is complex, and layered- with a lot more going on between the covers than first meets the eye.
As with her other book, the characters were quite interesting individuals who were really well thought out, and all had their own quirks, flaws, and unique personalities. The setting and world-building were great and gave the story a unique ‘feel’. The world-building was really well-crafted- but, in saying that, I think it was the characters who really drove this story, pulling me in and keeping me turning the pages, following along to see how it all turned out in the end. They certainly made it more interesting, for sure.
If you love dystopian stories with more than a few surprising developments, then this is definitely the book for you.
I look forward to reading more of Ms. Jacob’s work.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Petra Jacob!

This book is so good! Once again a wonderful dystopian novel. The only issue I had while reading was the different POV’s. They were not separated very clearly, so I had to re-read in order to figure out which character was narrating.

However, the characters were amazing and well detailed. I was frustrated with Frankie all the way up to the very end. I have to say Zac or the twins were my favorite characters. I know, they are on opposite ends of the spectrum, but they have their individual quirks that I love.

Overall I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a good dystopian read. This is on a different level and includes my next favorite genre as well, which is Sci-Fi. A very fun and unique read for anyone looking for something different and quick!

Petra Jacob is a new author to me so thought I would give this book a go as the cover drew me in. I was curious and wasn’t sure what to expect but I was not disappointed. The Catford Catastrophe Zone is her fourth on the edge of your seat book and is an intriguing dystopian science fiction thriller is set in the future of 2100 England.
The characters are compelling, well thought out and well developed with their own quirks, and personalities. The story was helped along and was made more interesting with the dark humour that Petra wove just right.
Unfortunately, her mission would force her into the darker side of a world she had never seen. Frankie had seen many things, but nothing could have prepared her for the dangerous and disturbing Catford Catastrophe zone. A place where nightmares are made. A place full of unimaginable horrors. A place where there are rebellions, where the worst of humanity resides. Where plants are no longer just plants and unknown creature’s dwell. A place where special abilities, and things you have never thought existed are the norm. A place that she may not survive.
What’s at the infamous Ground Level? Who is collecting people any why? To find out you really need to pick up this book and find out.
Beware of the place where things go bump night or day. Don’t close your eyes!

This was quite the thrilling adventure. It did remind me in some ways, such as the zones (ex. poverty) of The Hunger Zone. This was a story I couldn’t put down. It’s a crazy world (who knows, could our world end up that way?). I couldn’t put it down. I was totally drawn in by the characters. I am usually turned right off a story with nonbinary. The pronouns make it to hard for my brain to comprehend at time (complications from surgery). The AI boss being that way was so interesting that I had to see where that went. It was a totally good story all around. I’d put it right up there at the top. This is a must read dystopian/scifi/fantasy. Excellent story.

London, 2120. Frankie dreams of being promoted from undercover police officer to DNA-enhanced crime fighter. She just needs to complete one more mission to prove she’s got what it takes.

However, that new mission is to spy on a secret rebellion in a poverty zone – and Frankie has no idea what a poverty zone is, since nobody has ever escaped one.

Once she’s arrived in the Catford Zone, she realises the rumours barely do justice to the horror.

She must face the wild chaos of glitching brain implants and mutant insects, while the locals tell her it’s too dangerous to walk at ground level, but won’t tell her why.

Her boss won’t let her leave until she has completed the mission, even though Frankie is convinced there is nothing to investigate. The highly trained ‘rebels’ are just a group of hapless hippies and hysterics attempting to survive in the hellscape. As she uncovers their bizarre and tragic secrets, she is pulled deeper into the chaos and subterfuge and is unsure if she will ever escape.

The Catford Catastrophe Zone is a dystopian science fiction thriller with an undercurrent of satirical humour.

Peddling Doomsday by Petra Jacob – Review by Angela Hayes

Peddling DoomsdayPeddling Doomsday by Petra Jacob
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Peddling Doomsday by Petra Jacob is a great psychological drama with prophecies, cults/secret organisations, rituals, conditioning, cover ups, lies, hidden agendas, control, suspense, and intrigue. Ms. Jacob is a new-to-me author whose work I have enjoyed exploring with this book.
The story was very intriguing and suspenseful- Ms. Jacob certainly turned up the dial on the tension and anticipation to HIGH. The story is complex, with a lot more going on between the covers than I was initially expecting. Things are definitely not what they seem.
Parallels can be drawn between this storyline and our society today, as well as the inner workings of a cult, and the many and varied conspiracy theories that abound on the subject of ‘media distraction’. The story gives us a front row seat to all of this and more, while drawing on mankind’s search for some meaning in our lives- and how many are looking to belong, for fulfillment, and a ‘better’ way of life.
The characters were really well thought out, and were many and varied, they all had their own quirks, traits and personalities- The characters really drove this story and made it more interesting. I was rooting for Deirdre, and others, the whole way through.
I look forward to reading more of Ms. Jacobs work.

Thank you, Ms. Jacob!
