From the very beginning this book has your attention and questioning what in the world is going on and what happened?! I really enjoyed this book. Lauren’s character is so real and entertaining to read what she goes through throughout the chapters. Each chapter keeps you guessing and thinking hard about the situation. Keeps you on your toes until the very end! I definitely recommend this read and can’t wait to read more.
There is something to be said about an author who can make a necessary yet often overlooked court stenographer job and turn it interesting. This was a homerun by the author as an intriguing whodunnit with more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. We start out meeting Lauren Besoner an extremely likeable and relatable character who finds herself in a bit of a jam after finding Judge Murphy’s body. Once again thrust into drama that she has tried to avoid since divorcing her ex-Tony. She now finds herself the primary suspect in the middle of the murder investigation by detective Sam Overstreet and his boss chief of police Ray Newell. She knows she didn’t commit the murder but now she must launch her own investigation since the police do not seem to be looking at anyone else. Is she being set up and if so by whom? What will happen if the killer believes she is getting to close to the truth? Can Lauren make it out unscathed or become victim number 2? This book will leave you on the edge of your seat with many predictions on who the killer might be. Can you figure it out before the police do? Read this book to see just how good your detective skills are!

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery, crime thriller which had me hooked from page one. Court stenographer Lauren Besoner has returned home to Wyoming hoping to put her broken marriage behind her. Lauren’s newfound stable life comes crashing down around her when she arrives to pick up Judge Murphy for work, only to discover her murdered in her own home. After calling the police and answering routine questions Lauren realises that she has become their prime suspect. Her case is not helped by the fact that there seems to be a link between the dead judge and Lauren’s cheating ex husband. Lauren is determined to prove that she is innocent even if it means solving the case herself. In trying to track down the killer, Lauren puts herself at risk of becoming their next victim. I was gripped by this fast paced novel, the murder, crime storyline was full of suspense and the plot kept me guessing until the end. I loved Lauren as a main character and felt she brought the story together. The characters and setting were brought to life by the authors descriptive narrative, and you could tell that the author has a background in the legal profession by the small details she’s added which made the story have a very real feel to it. I felt immersed in the story and was happily turning the pages late at night to discover the killer’s identity. A great first book in a new series, and I look forward to book two.

The book immediately draws you in. There is no other way around it—it’s a real page-turner from the word ‘go’. Lauren is an interesting character; honestly, her reactions to the events in the book are just incredibly realistic. It’s easy to lose yourself in the story. The portrayal of police work was engaging (though I’m not sure how accurate it is—I’ve never dealt with the police before!). It was just a fantastic example of suspense and intrigue to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. I give this book 4 stars and a place on my Re-read shelf.

The best thing about this story, it had me rooting for the main characters! Told from the point of view of a court stenographer, the author introduces a widening cast of likeable characters and believable suspects. I enjoyed the moral dilemma Lauren faces, privy to all the details of a crime, we have a front row seat to see how she manages that information.. intrigue ensues!! This a great Book 1 of a promised series!

Silent Gavel kept me guessing. Lauren is a court stenographer who finds Judge Murphy’s dead body. Lauren is the number one suspect and needs to prove her innocence. At the same time her cheating ex-husband may replace Judge Murphy which would mean Lauren would be out of a job. This book is the first in the Crawford Mystery Series. I am ready to read the second one!

WOW! I usually don’t read books that have too much to do with law, but this book blew me away. It wasn’t at all what I thought it might be. I am really looking forward to reading book 2 in the series. I was hooked in the very first chapter. This book is more of a who-done-it type read and less to do with law. I loved that!

This book was amazing! The author does an amazing job of world-building! The characters are so relatable and watching the growth throughout the story, especially in the midst of the conflict was excellent! Lauren is so strong and intelligent and her wit and sass kept me engrossed in every little bit of the story. Her thoughts on coworkers and other characters in the story were so realistic, because everybody works with those people who don’t pull their weight. Watching her try and figure out what happened was amazing seeing how she worked it through in her head.

This one started off a little different than I thought it would, but once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. Lauren Besoner is a court stenographer and I enjoyed learning a bit about the proceedings and the life behind the scenes of a courtroom. She is also the lead suspect in a recently murdered judge that she happened to work for. As an innocent that has come across the body of her former employer (and more history to be found out later), she starts her own investigation into the crime. The story progresses in a realistic way, not flying from suspect to suspect as some stories do. I particularly liked that it was easy to immerse myself into. My only drawback, if one is to be found, was the unnecessary “extra” conversations that were not important to the story. (But could be seen as character building, so I understand why the author may have included them) Well done for this author and I will surely be reading more, including the follow up book!

Ever have a moment in your life where EVERYTHING is going wrong? Like you are on a ship that is sinking and everything you try to help it just makes it worse? Yeah, that is how the main character in this book (Lauren) feels like. She is sick of the drama that has become her life. She is trying to change her life. She moved back to her hometown, she got a new courtroom job, and she has left her love life (or lack of one) behind. But her life comes to a crashing halt when she goes to pick up her boss and finds her dead! Now she’s the number one suspect in the murder and her ship is sinking even faster! So much for her new life right? Lauren starts to investigate herself to prove herself innocent. So, will Lauren go to prison for the murder? Will she be able to find the Judge’s killer before anyone else gets hurt? Or will she end up another victim of the real killer? Silent Gravel is the first murder mystery book in this series and I can’t wait to read the next one!! If you love fast paces murder mystery action books this one is for you!!

Silent Gavel (A Crawford Mystery Book 1) by Merissa Racine is the page-turning opener of a two book courtroom series. Lauren Besoner is a courtroom stenographer and, after moving to Wyoming, finds herself in the middle of a murder that she did not commit. This author is a court stenographer in real life (also in Wyoming!), so the writing is reliable as well as compelling. The characters in this book are well-written, and it is easy to imagine being in the middle of this story. The story makes you think and keeps you on the edge of your seat! I thoroughly enjoyed following Lauren’s story and cannot wait to dig into book 2!

This book took me for a mystery ride! Lauren Besoner is a stenographer in Crawford County and hasn’t been working there for that long yet. She went to pick up her Judge to a hearing in a different town to find her dead in her home. From there, she’s first suspect since she was the one to find her, but she goes to to prove her innocence to find all the facts. This includes her relationship with her ex-husband, keeping up with her job, and trying not to be the next victim. This was a great mystery to read and went straight to the second book when I was done.

Worth every star! I was hooked from the first line. Merissa Racine sets the perfect small town Wyoming scene when Lauren, a court reporter, enters the Judge’s house to see why she’s running late for a court appearance and walks in on her bloody body laying on the ground – making Lauren suspect number one. I’m a sucker for a good thriller and this book is no exception. It was easy to relate to the characters and really cool to see the insight from someone inside the legal system work to prove her own innocence. I highly recommend this novel for an intriguing page turner that you won’t be able to put down!

She is resilient, strong and determined to have a better life. When she meets the handsome, charismatic, hard working Detective Sam Overstreet will sparks fly and set their worlds on fire? Interesting take on investigative who-did-it mystery
This one started off slow for me, but once it ramped up in the second half, I was hooked. This book is written in the second person format and I have come to find those stories harder for me to be swept away with because I feel so removed.
I did enjoy getting to know Lauren and the roll of a stenographer in the court proceedings. While we get to meet the Detective in his official capacity here, with viewing Lauren as the suspect, I do like him as a character and hope to see more, and see if he develops into a love interest down the line. I also loved Aunt Kate’s farm and the mention of alpacas. I enjoyed the tenderness that Maverick and Percy brought out in the other characters and that animals had such a prominent role in Lauren’s life.
I do feel that the story was dragged out a bit more than it needed to be, with lots of conversations that didn’t have much bearing on the storyline and furthering the plot, but did feel like an accurate depiction of what would occur in real life. I did not see that ending coming, nor did I suspect who the killer was. Talk about something coming out of left field! However it didn’t feel so impossible for it to have been that person either.

Silent Gavel (A Crawford Mystery Book 1) by Melissa Racine caught my attention from the start. Lauren, a court reporter, finds the Judge she works for murdered one morning when they are supposed to be on the road to a trial in another district. Soon after the police and other emergency vehicles arrive, Lauren is answering questions about why she was there and she begins feeling uneasy about the direction the questions are heading. At one point after frustrated, Lauren starts a list of suspects to find who really did it. This book is full of great characters, some plot twists, a couple of dogs, and kept me guessing as to who the real killer might be. Overall, I really enjoyed the book.

Silent Gavel is my first Merissa Racine book, but it won’t be my last. I was instantly hooked and didn’t want to put it down. It is the first book in the Crawford Mystery series, and is a page turner. It is action packed from the very beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat. Lauren finds her boss dead, and soon becomes the lead suspect. She begins playing detective to try to prove her innocents, and while she has many possible suspects in mind, the cops are zeroed in on her. This book is full of surprises and action packed. Relationship drama, ex cons, unemployment, jealousy, the works. I loved all the characters and how they were brought to life. I was shocked to learn who the killer was, as they were not even on my radar (or Lauren’s for that matter). I hope to see some romantic sparks between Lauren and Sam (detective) in the next book. Highly recommend this one! Side note, I thought it was really cool to learn the author is a stenographer, like the lead in this book.

Merissa Racine did an amazing job with this book!! Every chapter I read I was trying to fit pieces together to solve this small town mystery. I did not want to put this book down once I started, and I did not want to be wrong about who I believed to be the murderer after I finished it. Lol This story was very vivid and easily imagined, and the way she told the story it felt like you could be there. It starts of with Lauren returning home to face her past and see if she can find her way successfully in this new chapter of her life. Good friends, her own home, and decent job show her promising start. Then one day she goes to pick up the judge she works with and walks right into a murder scene. She is questioned multiple times believed to be the prime suspect, and when information comes in casting a shadow on her ex-husband as well things get even stranger. As the story unfolds there is much more to this mystery and the small town than meets the eye. I promise you wont put this book down until the end!

It comes to her attention that she has become a prime suspect when she does several interviews with the police. How can she prove her innocence beyond a shadow of a doubt? Surely there are several suspects who had more than enough motive to commit the crime? Will she be able to find the killer before she is arrested a charged unjustly? Or is she a soon to be victim herself?

Looking for a fantastic crime thriller?? You HAVE to read this!

Silent Gavel (A Crawford Mystery Book 1) by Merissa Racine
4 out of 5 Stars
Lauren Besoner has had enough drama recently. Lauren is ready for some stability. Lauren has bought a house and gotten a dog. She is trying to make a life for herself. All of that comes to an abrupt halt when she finds her boss, Judge Murphy, dead. As the investigation ramps up, Lauren finds herself as a suspect. How does she find a way to prove it wasn’t her?
Merissa Racine adds twists at every turn, keeping you guessing until the very end. Just when you think you have it figured it out, a new piece of evidence pops up and changes everything. Lauren can’t stay out of trouble. She keeps landing in the interrogation room with the very handsome Detective Sam Overstreet. It is not looking good for Lauren. Excellent storytelling! Maybe the mystery will be how Lauren avoids a relationship with Sam?
