I absolutely love listening to this book! It was quite out of my wheelhouse and I am so glad I chose it! That characters are wonderful. The plot was enough to keep my attention and that narrators voice was soothing enough to not be mundane or boring! I look forward to trying more books outside of my wheelhouse thanks to Sand Your Ground

When you first listen to the beginning of this audible, you think you know what’s going on. Well, let me tell you I was thrown for a loop! Cady is a lawyer who is hoping to get the partnership she has been waiting for and working for forever. Well, on the way home, she ends up shooting a man in defense as she feared for her life. When you continue listening, you will hear more and more that you will question and start cluing all of the pieces together. I loved every minute of it!

I was not expecting this book to be as politically charged as it was. It had good character development which led to the reader able to make their own decisions on the guiltiness of our leading character. The story found itself with a lot of subplots in my opinion that led to more questions that I feel were never answered. Overall, interesting listen with a twist at the end that I was not expecting.

4 Stars. As a Kentucky gal from somewhat less-than-typical upbringing, I appreciate the author’s use of her protagonist’s background. A big- city attorney with small town roots finds herself the center of a complicated legal matter. Themes of this story parallel current events that grip our nation. Racism, classism, and sexism all rear their ugly heads. This tale will keep you guessing until the very end, and leave you reeling from the plot twist.

I decided to listen to something a little different from what I usually listen to on a whim and I have no regrets.
Through the entire book I found myself liking Cady one minute and not liking her the next which shocked me. I’m not usually one to flip flop like that over a character several times in the same book no matter the circumstances. Was this something the author did intentionally or is it me? I have no idea but if it was on purpose he did a great job making it happen either way.
I had no idea how it was going to play out up until the end when it was revealed which made me enjoy it more. Definitely lots of twists and turns with what I think were very subtle hints along the way.
Melissa Reizian’s narration added more to the story and character. She did an amazing job bringing Cady along with the others and the story to life.

Stand Your Ground by A.J. Ullman Narrated by Melissa Reizian Five Stars
I stepped back from my usual romance listen, for this awesome crime drama. I truly enjoyed listening to this story. It was full of current events and realistic to the times we find our nation in. I listen in one sitting.
This is the first narration I have listed to by Melissa Reizian, but definitely won’t be the last. Her voice is very easy to listen to. She brought the characters to life.
Cady Fox goes out to dinner with the head attorneys where she works. Afterwards she does her regular activity of riding her bike home. But tonight she is attacked by a man known for his unlawful activities. Forcing her to shoot and kill him. That’s all you get from me. No Spoilers. This author writes clearly and is very descriptive in his definition of how his book reads. This is a thrilling Audio book loaded with action and so easy to get caught up in. The characters are just right for their part in the story. They are also likable. While this story throws out many things that are going on in our lives today, Black Lives Matter and White Privilege just to name a couple. He sticks to his main goal. Tell the story and make it clear. I enjoyed listening to this story and how it played out. I know you will too.
Enjoyable story that was full of suspense and intrigued and also brought in current event issues as well as this story unfolded and felt like it’s real life.
Cady Fox Was on the brink of a promotion as an attorney when her life is turned upside down as she is involved with a shooting of a man. Cady claims the shooting is justified, but is it truly?
As the story goes the layers start to unfold slowly throughout … you really question yourself is Cady innocent or guilty. Wow….great listen for sure…

I enjoyed listening to this suspenseful story. I enjoyed being pulled into the story by the characters. I also enjoyed how the narrator brought to the story as well. The narrator’s change in tones for the characters has me coming back for more. This is an easy book to listen to as it is fast paced and engaging. This is a story about Cady and how life throws her some unexpected situations that change her. She is now faced with standing her ground and murder, will these two cross? The question remains will she run or stand her ground for justice. I loved Cady’s character. A great supportive, connectable person. I really enjoyed what she brought to the story. A great audiobook by a great author. I highly recommend this audio.

PHENOMENAL! This suspenseful story knocked my socks off. I was not expecting that. I loved the twists and turns. The narration was a tad monotone. A little more excitement and variation in the voices would have made this perfect. A plot full of action and twists, slimy characters that you love to hate, even ones you thought you’d love but found out they suck too. This story is worth the listen.

When Cady Fox leaves dinner with the senior attorneys at her law firm one spring night, the only thing on her mind is: Will they make her a partnership offer the next morning? What she doesn’t expect is to be accosted on her bike ride home in an inner-city park by a man whose nefarious intent requires her to shoot him to death on a deserted basketball court at 11 p.m.
Growing up poor in Appalachia, Cady had few expectations that she would be a success in Big Law. Now, on the cusp of her greatest moment, she becomes the focus of a police investigator tired of people claiming white privilege when killing Black men and a public outcry for justice for the dead man.
For Cady Fox, her world cracked open long before she found herself face to muzzle with a .45 on the concrete jungle of a desolate urban basketball court at an hour before midnight one spring night. The line between stand your ground and murder always blurs in the moment of a confrontation. Cady is forced to navigate the criminal justice system and the societal tensions that come with that blur, learning how the past eats your soul when your only choices are to run or stand your ground.

Stand Your Ground was a good book! It takes on current issues that we see on the news every day. The ending did shock me. Characters who I thought were one way turned out to actually be another way and it really surprised me. The only thing I didn’t like was that it seemed like the language of the characters that lived in the hood was exaggerated.

This isn’t the first book I’ve read by Ullman. Once again I’m brought into the world of crime. Someone did something to protect themselves.
Cady is a trial lawyer by day and fighting crime by night. Not really fighting crime as it was to protect herself. Shooting a man seven times has its pains. The past may even come back to bite her in the butt. The quote I chose for Cady is: “I felt threatened for my life. I shot him before he could shoot me.”

Stand Your Ground is a suspense filled crime thriller by A.J Ullman. This is the first book I have read by this author. I like the way it was told, starting out with the main character Cady shooting someone. I didn’t really know the back story, and it slowly unwinds as the book progresses. I felt that was a good way to tell the story, because it gripped me from the beginning and kept me hooked. Then I was led through discovery and interviews wanting to know if Cady would be tried for murder or if it was justified self defense. My main complaint is the story seemed filled with a lot of rambling, there were a lot of analogies and tangents which seemed to take away from the action of the actual story. The book is very current, referencing BLM, George Floyd, #metoo, and being “woke.” It did not end as I expected in the beginning.

Fast-paced crime mystery! Stand Your Ground by A.J. Ullman is an engaging, thrilling read. You’re drawn in right from the beginning with non-stop action.
Cady, an attorney vying for partner, from a tumultuous background, finds herself in a predicament when she shoots and kills a known drug dealer one night. Was it self-defense or something more?
I enjoyed the unraveling of this story and the night in question throughout the book. It kept my attention and kept me turning the page.

As I started to read Stand Your Ground by A. J. Ullman I had an idea of what the story might be about. What I didn’t anticipate was how quickly I got pulled into the story. Mr. Ullman does a fantastic job of not only showing you what the characters are thinking and feeling but also gives details about the settings. Many times I felt like I was right there with Cady as she was navigating through a life changing situation that could potentially mean she could be accused of murder. The story is full of suspense and keeps you reading through some tough moments that are very relevant to events that have and continue to occur in our country.

Cady Fox is lawyer living in the big city and it is a far cry from the small Kentucky town which she grew up in, she has just left dinner with the senior attorneys of the law firm she works for, where she feels confident that she has cinched the partnership she has been working towards for the last ten years, but as she cycles home through the local park at going on midnight, she ends up in a confrontation with a man in a basketball court where she feels so threatened by him that she ends up shooting him and bringing about his death. As it sinks in what she has had to do, Cady calls the emergency services and when they arrive, she is asked a few questions and then sent to hospital to have her wounds looked over, they end up being a gash in her head and a concussion so she is sent home to recover, but not before the police take a statement from her. When she gets home, she calls her nearest and dearest to tell them what has happened before eventually falling asleep, the next day she engages the help of a lawyer to help with her case and the “stand your ground” statute of her defence.
As the days pass and word of the case, the victim and Cady slowly leak out into the media, a new danger comes to the surface, it is the world’s perceptions of the crime and who committed it which has split down the middle and Cady is bang in the middle of it all. To the people on the outside looking it is the narrative of another privileged white woman shooting and killing another black man and the prejudices surrounding this come to the fore and after recent past events, there is a public outcry which leads to Cady needing to think about the criminal justice system which she may just end up in.
As things become more heated and the debate more and more fierce, Cady hasn’t just got to deal with the aftermath of her self-defence, she also has to deal with the memories of her past bubbling back up to the surface and the reminders of a life she wished to leave behind. Will Cady’s defence keep her free and out of jail, or will her past and present collide to meet out its own kind of justice? This is a narrative which will draw you into murky waters and leave you questioning everything you think you know and leave you pondering the hard questions in life as you follow Cady’s story and are compelled to keep reading to find out the conclusion.

A.J. Ullman delivers in this crime-based suspense novel. He takes the interesting perspective of someone who works within the justice system ending up on the wrong side of the law. Cady, our main character, is a successful attorney vying for partnership at her law firm. She believes the partnership is firmly in her grasp when one evening she walks into a life-or-death situation and must defend herself, to the demise of the other person. From then on, we see Cady’s story unravel, and understand how her past also plays into her current story.
The book is very socially relevant at the time being, looking into things like the Black Lives Matter movement and the discourse around white privilege. While I found it interesting that the author was bringing current social matters into his writing, in some ways I feel that it was pushed a little too hard. The cultural mix within the book and juxtaposition of characters seemed forced in some aspects. Overall, this book held my attention and kept me turning the pages. The characters and the storyline were well crafted, and I will be looking to read more of Mr. Ullman’s books in the future.
This book was amazing!! First of all, the main character is a strong-willed, intelligent woman, and those are always my favorite characters to read. Secondly, it’s well written and kept me engaged throughout the entire story. Thirdly, the interactions between all the characters in the midst of the conflict were so realistic. I really enjoyed seeing different themes touched on throughout the story that are happening in the real world too, in a way that made sense for the story.

Stand Your Ground is a fantastic thriller by A J Ullman. This was the first time I had read any of this author’s work and if this book is any example of their work then I’ll definitely be reading more. As someone from the UK, I’m not very clued up on US gun laws, so this book was a major eye opener for me. To be honest, I can’t get my head around citizens being able to legally carry a gun. My home city of Glasgow is violent enough and the thought of adding guns to that mix really fills me with fear. I was hooked to this book from the very beginning and just did not want to put it down. Why does real life have to get in the way of valuable reading time. There book is not particularly fast paced. There is a lot of added detail that gives you a much more in depth look into Cady’s earlier life. The writer really does take you on a fascinating journey and there are many times that it takes you in a totally different direction from where you thought you were going. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.

What a thought-provoking book. This is the first book I have read by A. J. Ullman, but it makes me want to search out more. Cady is a white woman lawyer who is getting ready to make partner at her law firm when riding her bike through her sketchy neighborhood, she is accosted, shoots, and kills a black man. Cady has only been carrying a gun for the last couple years due to moving to this neighborhood. And that is how the book starts!! She states self-defense, but not everyone is buying it. BLM is not making it an open and shut case. We learn more about Cady’s backstory and see her changing as the story progresses. Being a lawyer, she is seeing the other side of the judicial system. Does she stand and fight? Does she go to jail? How does this unfortunate situation change her? I really enjoyed that the story makes use of current headlines and social issues. Thank you, A. J. Ullman, for an amazing read!

Stand your ground by A.J. Ulman a five-star read that will grip you and only let you go when you feel the shot. This won’t be a story for everyone, as some people will miss the underlying theme to the story, maybe it’s because I don’t live where this is set, so I see the outside perspective, or maybe it just that I always try to be the devils advocate and show people both sides, and that’s what this story does so well, the author has a great way of showing you everything while keeping it hidden, it is almost like the wizard of Oz, you know what you are seeing, but there is so much more in reality. If you like a good thriller that has a voice that needs to be heard it is very current so will be raw to many, but this is something everyone should read.

Stand Your Ground A. J. Ullman ☆☆☆☆☆ This story will definitely get your heart pumping. This is a crime story with a thrilling thriller. Cady Fox has worked hard to be the best lawyer. Now with a possible partnership in her grasp, that is all she was thinking about as she headed home on her bike. A ride she has taken every night, just for the exercise. But tonight will be different, so different she could be headed to prison for murder. No spoilers from this reviewer.
A.J.Ullman wrote this highly intense crime story. I was grabbed on page one and could not put the book down. He leaves no stone unturned, and you can’t help looking around at every sound, creak or pop. I remained at the edge of my seat, while reading this story. I love Cady and Easy, their friendship with benefits is outstanding. The characters in this story will leave you wanting so much more. Well Done A.J.Ullman! Well Done! ! !

This novel, for me is a undeniable good time to read for sure! I found the story started off well, and there was good character development, and you got a good opening feel. I found the suspense and intrigue was very well done and the author knew exactly where to add those moments in, and most importantly the author knew how to keep the reader interested rather than just giving all big points at once.
I found the book very realistic. Cady was a very strong character. I feel what she had gone through in the novel could well happen to any of us. You live your life, you get attacked, and then in a moment to prevent harm, your very world could shatter. Cady was a lawyer so she knew the justice system well, but when its her on the side being the person accused, the tables had turned for her. I found she was strong with confidence, but she also had fear of the unknown of what may come of her. I found her personality and how she was written to be not only admirable, but also very much realistic.
The suspense was strong and real. Would she be accused and set free or accused and sentenced? I found the beginning was a slow burn build, but it goes in steps like an apartment building. You at floor 5 now, oh now your floor 10, all the way to the pent house. I enjoyed the build up to the ending of the novel. The book was realistic, and full of suspense and intrigue, and I highly enjoyed it!
The book dealt with a scenario that could be real life, to well anyone, even some of the best law firm affiliates you cant think of really. The author played on their words well and built a very suspenseful book, it kept me guessing at points, and I say it was a read that was enjoyable, and real in more ways than one! I would for sure say, its a must read and I recommend this, its a book that is truthful and real.

I truly enjoyed the storyline that went with this book. I will admit though I skipped through alot because it would veer off quite often and there were many pages of this book I didn’t feel like I needed for the actual story.
It was a very current book, mentioning many things that caught me off guard because these things are recent or going on now in this world and I liked that.
I loved the characters, I got a good grasp of all of them and that made me enjoy this story even more. I never knew what was going to happen next and that was proven especially through the last half of the book. It was fast moving when it was the actual story being told and I love the writing style and will definitely be coming back for more books by this author!

Cady Fox is focused on making partner at the law firm where she works instead of what some gang member threatened her with. On her way home from a dinner meeting she is stopped by this gang member and his friends. He plans to make his threats a reality, but she has come prepared. Now it is up to detectives to determine whether or not she is a cold blooded murderer or if she killed the man in self defense. Will she be arrested and convicted or deemed innocent based on the stand your ground law?
This suspenseful thriller will pull you into its pages. At first I felt like the story was moving a bit slowly, but as I got further into the book the story unraveled at a good pace. It does mention some current events which make it more modern and relatable. Overall I enjoyed this story and how everything unfolded.

Ullman – Review by Charlisa Wahtomy-Alba
I must start this review by saying not everything is as it seems. We all have our own versions of what happens to us but often everything ends up being not fully ensconced in truth. This book starts out with Cady, our main character, riding home after a dinner to evaluate who to make a partner at the law firm. When she enters the basketball court, and her life is threatened by Mingo to which she must defend herself with lethal force to survive. Everything seems black and white at first it should be a successful stand your ground defense. However, we come to realize that not everything is as it seems as Cady’s past acts come to light, and more videos and pictures are released from that night. Slowly throughout this book the truth unravels like a ball of yarn and we’re left riding this rollercoaster that you just can’t get off because you must know what happens next. Is there such thing as a bad hero? Can someone do something bad but be forgiven because it is for the right cause? These are some questions you just might be asking yourself by the end of this book. The only thing I can add is that this is one book that will leave you on the edge of your seat unable to predict what comes next, or how the other shoe will drop!

Stand Your Ground is a crime thriller which involve current issues plaguing the US today. The story is fast paced and grabbed my attention from beginning to end. This is my new favorite book by A.J. Ullman. This book features Cady Fox, a lawyer claiming the ladder, who runs into trouble one night while riding her bike home. She is confronted on her way home by a black man and feels her life is in danger. She feels the need to protect herself and shoots the man. The story revolves around public outrage and an investigator who just can’t accept any more claims of white privilege. The story delves into issues that may cause people to disagree with the author’s views, but the story was well written and the characters had great depth. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
