What a thought-provoking book. This is the first book I have read by A. J. Ullman, but it makes me want to search out more. Cady is a white woman lawyer who is getting ready to make partner at her law firm when riding her bike through her sketchy neighborhood, she is accosted, shoots, and kills a black man. Cady has only been carrying a gun for the last couple years due to moving to this neighborhood. And that is how the book starts!!
She states self-defense, but not everyone is buying it. BLM is not making it an open and shut case. We learn more about Cady’s backstory and see her changing as the story progresses. Being a lawyer, she is seeing the other side of the judicial system. Does she stand and fight? Does she go to jail? How does this unfortunate situation change her? I really enjoyed that the story makes use of current headlines and social issues. Thank you, A. J. Ullman, for an amazing read!
