My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Shadowed Agenda is the second book in the Shadow Defense Security Series. This book is a stand-alone that doesn’t require you to have read the first book. In this book, we have an enemies-to-lovers story between Regan Christenson and Pavlo Barislov. These two are attracted to each other but cannot stand each other but when Regan and her daughter are threatened, Pavlo can’t turn away. This book is another fast-paced, on-the-edge-of-your-seat type story. The chemistry between Pavlo and Regan is amazing. The author packs this book with adventure. This was another thrilling ride.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Shadowed Obsession by Mavery Ellscott is the first book in the Shadow Defense Security Series. Kiera O’Ryan is a beautiful PR rep who has a stalker. Cade Hartford is her private military contractor neighbor who jumps at the chance to help catch Kiera’s stalker when the Montana police can’t. These two are attracted to each other but try to keep it business only because they cannot afford to be distracted by each other. The chemistry between Cade and Kiera was fun. I liked both of these characters. I love that they are comfortable together. This was a well-written and intense romance/suspense story. It is a fast-paced story with plenty of action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this book.

I do have to say that this particular book is a bit darker than the first two and twice as hard to put down once you start reading it. I highly recommend reading this whole series. This was an entertaining and engaging novel which kept me captivated throughout. Photojournalist Rose Webster was injured after being shoved and landing on the hard pavement whilst at a raucous rally. Not only does she have one arm in a splint, a weakened right hand, and bruised ribs but her camera was also broken. Whilst filling out insurance claim forms her Aunt rings to say that she needs to return to her childhood home in Lake Amelia, to care for her ailing mother. While she’s there Rose decides to have a sort out of the attic and finds some of her late father’s personal items, including a photo hidden in a book and a travel bag which seem to suggest he might have had a secret life. Rose is determined to find out the truth even when she discovers something that shocks the whole family. I found Rose to be a likeable and relatable character who I felt engaged with. Both the setting, especially the small town of Lake Amelia in the foothills of the Adirondacks, and the characters were brought vividly to life through the descriptive narrative which made me feel immersed in the story. The intriguing storyline and plot twists kept me hooked and I found this to be a real page turner.

Finlay is an investigative journalist who is investigating a nightclub in Paris that is also a front for an international human trafficking ring. When Duke shows up, sent by his business partner and his wife to check on Finlay after she misses a planned check in, Duke realizes that Finlay may be in over her head and not even realize it. Duke is a former Navy SEAL and one of the partners of Shadow Defense, a private investigation company. While helping Finlay to try to finish her investigation into the nightclub as quickly and safely as possible, it quickly becomes apparent to Duke that everything is not quite what it appears, including Finlay. Duke doesn’t trust journalists due to past incidents, and finds it hard to trust Finlay, let alone admit his feelings for her. The most important thing to keep in mind going into this book, is nothing is quite what it appears, and you can’t even always trust your own memory. This book is part of a series, but can definitely be read as a stand-alone.

Family Ties Family Lies is Women’s Fiction that is packed with drama, family drama, family secrets, suspense, mystery and so much more. I wasn’t real sure what to expect going in as this is my first book by this author but wow what a heartfelt suspense that had me turning the pages till the end . I found myself lost in the pages as I devoured this book. I had tears in my eyes throughout most of this story and couldn’t help but feel for Rose. When she gets word her moms health is failing she finds herself going back to her hometown where she grew up. While in the attic she uncovers information that was once hidden. She now finds herself uncovering more than she thought she would. What will happen when the past is uncovered? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I’m definitely interested in what other books she has written and look forward to reading more from this Author.

How far would you go to uncover family secrets?

Family Ties Family Lies by Jacqueline Boulden is the first book that I have read by this author, so I really didn’t know what I could expect from one of her stories when I snapped up a copy to explore. I took the chance, and I am glad that I did, as I found an intriguing women’s fiction mystery- a bit of a multi-faceted smalltown family saga/drama, with plenty of emotion, long-held secrets, lies, suspense, tension, intrigue, family dynamics, love, trauma, pain, angst, forgiveness, investigation, and dramatic developments.
Rose’s life is turned upside down in more ways than one. By going ‘home’ to care for her mother, she stumbles on some intriguing information. Things take a mysterious turn and Rose is about to discover some long-held secrets. The story takes us on an emotional journey- a real little mystery, with crime and investigation that has far more going on that first meets the eye. What happens made for a great read that had me engrossed to whole way through.
I will definitely be on the lookout for more of Ms. Boulden’s books to read in the future.
Happy Reading

Thank you, Jacqueline Boulden!

Rose and her Mother Carly took me by surprise. Even though I read the description of this story. I did not expect to be completely drawn in and torn apart. The story not only made me ugly cry, it made me stay up all night to find the answers to the one big question. Props to Rose for wanting to be with her mother when she was most needed. Even though things got intense this story is well worth reading. The author had perfect characters for this story. This is a well written rollercoaster ride with so much to discover. The suspense will keep you reading, the family will bring out the tears, and the tissue, chocolate and wine could be your calming. I hope you enjoy this story and the author as much as I did.

Suspense, twists, and unconditional love. This series is already dominating my top five favorite series already. While Drake was sprinkled into book one, and both were in book two, this is finally their time and their story. Dual perspective of Finlay and Drake.
Finlay is an investigative journalist, while on a mission in Mexico she met a seventeen-year-old girl, Gabriella, whose younger sister, twelve-year-old Lola, was taken into the worse trading business in the world. Without hesitation Gabriella flew to Paris in search of her sister and ended up in a trap that landed her owned by Evan. A chance moment taken Gabriella called Finlay who without question flew to Paris and went undercover to help. Thanks to her new best friend, Regan from book two, Drake was sent to look out for her on this dangerous mission. Drake had been watching and thought it was an overexaggerated on Regan’s part until he saw the clues and released that Finlay was poking around something far too big for one person to take on alone. All along the way Drake constantly is battling himself and his attraction to Finlay, while she wants him but thinks he hates her and only sees her as his enemy. Drake’s vast dislike of journalists first showed up in book two and continues here. He understands the power of words and how they can hurt people, only he starts to question his hatred of them when it comes to Finlay, she’s not like them. Finlay wants to better the world and safe everyone she can by exposing bad situations. Everything combined leads to some very intense moments but when the boss that even psycho Evan is afraid of is revealed, is anyone going to be safe again?
Can Finlay keep her promise to save Gabriella and Lola? Will Drake allow himself to follow his heart? Who is the big boss? What do they have to do with Finlay? The characters, honestly keep you coming back time and time again with each little tease. Especially with Drake popping in here and there and now finally getting his story was chef’s kiss. While his reason for hating journalists was sound, he was unfair to lump them all together. Finlay finally accepts she needs help and that she’s not alone. Every page leads to more shock and awe as the story unfolds and leaves you needing answers. Now I am torn between wanting more of Finlay and Drake and really hoping book four will be about Seb and Alexis. Either way I can’t wait, and I’ll see you there when the time comes.

That’s where Rose found herself. Her mother falls ill and she’s called to come help care for her. While in her childhood home, Rose finds some items that bring about a lot of questions and suspicions in her mind about who her family really is.

This author manages to weave the steam in with the suspense in mesmerizing ways. In this addition to the series, there are a few surprises along the way. The distrust adds to the tension throughout the story. Not everyone is who they seem to be.

Finlay, an investigative reporter, is undercover as Fiona trying to find a friend’s younger sister that has gotten caught up in the world of human trafficking. Finlay might have jumped into this investigation unprepared, not only for what she discovers but for the situation. Finlay jumped without looking when her friend called in a panic about the sister. Now Finlay is about 10 days from walking away from the club where she is working as a mixologist and exposing what actually goes on at the club. Finlay knows the organization is bigger than what goes on at the bar, but she didn’t realize how big or that she kicked the hornet’s nest getting this far.

Drake is only going to check on Finlay because she is friends with the boss’ wife. That is what he tells himself anyway when he agrees to take this assignment. When he walks in and sees what is going on and who the players are, Drake knows that Finlay is not only in over her head but also in danger. No matter how Drake tries to convince Finlay to let the special investigative security company he works for, composed of former military special forces operatives, take over the investigation, Finlay won’t budge. Finlay made a promise to her friend and she plans to see it through.

As Finlay and Drake get closer to the truth, the danger increases. People are being thrown out of windows and disappearing. Friends are risking their own safety for Finlay and she won’t let anyone get hurt for her. Finlay, Drake and company agree to a plan but things go wrong when Finlay goes missing from the club. As things come closer to the end, Finlay finds out who her true friends are. And, who her true family is.

There is so much heat between Finlay and Drake…wow! I hope we get to see some of these characters again! Seb and Alexis seem great together! Zola is strong and a survivor. I have a feeling that Gabriella is not gone forever. But we can only wait (not so patiently) and see. Jump into this series now!!

Jacqueline Boulden is a first time author for me so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Family Ties Family Lies is a suspenseful, family drama with lots of twists to keep you on your toes. Starting with Rose’s possible career ending injury, leading into her mother’s cancer diagnosis, and moving into the exposure of a life altering family secret, there is so much information to absorb. Boulden does a great job world building, from the hustle of city life to the slow, small town living. The characters are so perfectly imperfect that I couldn’t help but become invested in them. Overall, the story was great but I felt like the pace was a little slower than I would have liked. I felt myself drifting away from the story a time or two. I will definitely be looking into other titles by Jacqueline Boulden.

This book is an intriguing mystery story that has family right at its heart. It is written in a way that draws you in slowly as the book progresses and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I wanted to know more about the family and their history.
Although the mystery was a great, my favourite part of this book was the family element. It was so prevalent throughout the story and I think for me that made it more engaging and easy to connect with. I enjoyed the way the story was written and the pacing of the book. This really is a great read and I am looking forward to more books from this author.

Wow! I just LOVE these stories! This was just as thrilling as the previous in the series have been. I read this in a couple days. The story is action packed with a suspenseful side. This just Wowed me! I loved how we dive right in and the story really entranced me. The main characters are nothing short of extraordinary. Finlay is so confident and strong! She won’t let another push her around or treat her poorly. She is not afraid to stand up for herself and the way she finagles her way in and out of tight spots is impressive. Drake is one of the team we learn a bit about in here. He basically has one job to do but does not realize who he is up against. Then he has to reassess the whole situation.

Secondary characters are plentiful. They all had a purpose and they served it well. My only issue is it seemed that once they were off-page they disappeared to either never be heard from again or until their purpose was served. I get the main storyline is about whats going on between the MC but a line stating they made it to safety or something would have sufficed.

Overall this is an exciting and thrilling adventure we tag along on. I look forward to more in this series!

Shadowed Deception is the third book in the Shadow Defense Security series by Mavery Ellscott. I have been really enjoying this series, so there was no question whether I would be reading this instalment or not. I dove in as soon as it hit my Kindle and lost myself in the story for a few hours.
I felt this book amped things up a bit, and for me, it deemed like it was a bit edgier with more darker tones than the previous two books had- which I loved. It is a thrilling romantic suspense with danger, dramatic developments, tension, chemistry, agendas, action, mystery, the shadowy underworld of human trafficking, emotion, adventure, twists, secrets, lies, deception, layers, interesting characters, a web of intrigue, and steam — which all added up to a very engrossing read….. and (the book/series) would translate well onto the screen as well, making for a great movie.
I can’t wait to see where we go from here!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Mavery Ellscott!

I just love when I read a book and it actually feels like I’m right there in that very location with the characters ! It’s like I just want to grab my passport , pack my bags and go 😉

Jorja arrives at Istanbul airport and her best friend isn’t there to meet her and when she arrives at the hotel all her things are there and nobody can reach her and nobody has heard from her in a few days 🤷‍♀️😱 has Gabriella been abducted !?

The hunt is on for Gabriella but Jorja has her hands full with a foreign country , foreign language , strange culture and customs , bribery , corruption , greed , lies and dangerous characters .

Despite the feelings of anxiousness , fear , suspense and everything else there was a strong sense of the value of friendship and friends are the family we choose , our family not by blood and Jorja went all out for hers , she’s someone I’d want in my tribe 😉

This was one of those emotional stories that made you want to have tissue nearby. Rose heads home to help care for her mom after an injury takes her out of work for a bit. While taking care of her mom, she finds some family secrets. Though her mom and Aunt discourage her to leave it alone, Rose in an investigative journalist. She has to find the truth. This is a beautiful story, even if the truth brought pain. I found the characters to feel so real that my hurt truly hurt for them. I would get so mad, yet could understand the pain her brother felt. Rose just had her own surgery yet came down and was doing care for her mom. She had a lot on her plate. So many emotions with this story. You’ll really have to read it to understand. It’s up there at the top of my list of favorites for 2024. The writing pulls you in. You feel it.
