Rose Webster is facing down her fortieth birthday and worrying about her future as a photojournalist after getting caught in a raucous rally and shoved to the hard pavement, destroying her camera and, at least temporarily, her livelihood. One arm is in a splint, her right hand isn’t strong enough to hold a cup of coffee, and bruised ribs make it difficult to breathe. She’s filling out insurance claims when her aunt calls to tell her she’s needed in upstate New York to care for her ailing mother.
Rose has never liked returning to Lake Amelia in the foothills of the Adirondacks for more than a couple of days, but she has no choice. Doctors discover her mother has more health issues than anyone suspected, and Rose needs to help care for her. While poking around in the attic of her childhood home, Rose discovers personal items of her late father’s that hint of a secret life: a photo hidden in a book and a travel bag that hasn’t been opened in more than a decade.
Her next startling discovery sends shockwaves through her family. She’s more determined than ever to find answers no matter the cost. But will she regret what she learns and how it changes the way she thinks about family?

Shadowed Deception: A Psychological Suspense Thriller (Shadow Defense Security Series) by Mavery Ellscott – Review by Julie Johnson

Shadowed Deception: A Psychological Suspense Thriller (Shadow Defense Security Book 3)Shadowed Deception: A Psychological Suspense Thriller by Mavery Ellscott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.75 stars

I am really enjoying this series and am hoping that there will be more books to enjoy! This author is making her way to my favorites list also. I enjoy her writing style and the stories that she weaves.

This book could be read as a stand alone but I would recommend you starting at the beginning of the series to get the full story on how Shadow Defense came to be.

This story started off just a tad slow for me but that was short-lived. I soon found myself lost in the story and read this all in one setting. There is a lot of action and suspense with a little bit of romance thrown in. You’ll find yourself loving a character then hating them the next page. This book does discuss some difficult issues so use caution if this would bother you.

A great read that goes by quickly!

The characters in the book have a great chemistry. I loved watching their relationship develop as they tried to uncover a mystery. The author has written the book with pace and knows how to keep your attention the whole way through. This is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Moments from her small but pivotal role in A Very Crowded House, Harriet “Harry” Smith begins her own story where an Ivy League education, her wit, and talented two hands make no promises, least of all the promise of a happily-ever-after.
A typically tough private investigator and criminology professor, Harry Smith distracts herself from heartbreak by diving headlong into her latest surveillance job. On a steamy New York City night, she sets out on foot, cocksure and reckless, landing face to face with Trey Popov, a serious rising star in the Trubetzkoy crime family whose eyelashes just might be worth killing for. She escapes the verboten interaction but when the two meet again, Harry plunges undercover as a wholesome schoolteacher who turns Trey’s head despite his compulsion to climb the criminal ladder.
Harry’s unconventional, clandestine scheme and forbidden attraction combust in a violent disaster. All she can do is work toward justice for her murdered police detective-dad. Along the way, she hopes to rescue the good bad guy too far down the wrong road to be saved. For Harry, doing the right thing is also the hardest thing, but crossing some lines isn’t in your DNA when you bleed blue. Devastated by heartache, goaded by ambition, and blinded by attraction, Harry’s allegiances falter, and the differences between academic theory and real life prove that no one makes it out unchanged. Hell, some don’t make it out at all.

Shadowed Deception: A Psychological Suspense Thriller (Shadow Defense Security Book 3)Shadowed Deception: A Psychological Suspense Thriller by Mavery Ellscott
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a thrilling 5 star read. I was pulled in right from the beginning. Finlay is working undercover to try and break a trafficking ring. When a dangerous man starts to show interest in her, things take a scary twist. Drake works with Shadow Defense and he was sent to find her, will he be able to keep her safe? Will she be able to break the case? We get so many twists and turns my head was spinning. We get suspense, danger, and so much more. The author does a great job with her writing and you don’t want to put it down until you’re done. If you like dark suspense thrillers this is the series for you. Each book can be read as a stand alone but I suggest reading from the beginning. 1-click and get started today.

Portrait of Deception
By: Kathryn Dodson

Kathryn Dodson has become one of my absolute favorite authors and when I saw this was being released I was excited. This book delivered on my excitement in so many ways. This book is such a page turner. It has so many themes that play out from chapter to chapter. Margo was such a fantastic character who has really been left holding the worst of everything. She has been burned by a fellow colleague and has a career that is in shamples, a huge hotel bill and an offer that, well, she doesn’t want to take but the man doesn’t take no for an answer. She becomes the missing piece to a dictator who is going to hold her captive to get what she wants. Which leads her to run….which is where things get extra interesting.
I truly loved this book and I definitely loved the amount of suspense in this. I really did not want to put it down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I definitely recommend reading this especially if you love a good suspense book.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Mavery Ellscott has quickly become one of my go to authors. She is one author readers should get behind. After reading the first book Shadowed Obsession I was hooked. You can read each standalones, but I encourage you to read them in order because the characters interchange and you really will be missing out on all the delicious darkness. The stories just keep getting better and better.
Shadowed Deception is the third gripping book in the Shadow Defense Security series, and I think my favourite so far which hard because they have all been my favourite. I love the thrill of strong alpha males in protective mode and equally strong female leads.
I love a riveting suspense thriller, and this is one thrilling ride with twisty and surprising turns. I found myself on the edge of my set more often than not as the tension is palpable. Lets not forget the hot and sexy ex SEALs.
The characters are well developed and interesting and plot lines that are dark and gritty but feel believable. It is a captivating and engrossing, and an absolute must read you won’t be disappointed.
I need more now. I love a good psychological suspense thriller and Mavery delivers.

Excellent story. Once I was pulled into Drake and Findlay’s story, I was all in. It’s full of action, romance, suspense, and drama. I could not put it down. I loved the breath-holding moments that had you waiting to see what was coming. The topic of human trafficking has made for some amazing stories and this author did a fantastic job with it. I really hope we get a story about Seb and Alexis. I think there could be something there, just saying. This is a book that will have you so sucked in that you’ll feel you are part of the story. The cast of characters is so well0developed. They feel so relatable and just real. I highly recommend this.

Mavery Ellscott’s first foray into writing was not romantic suspense. She wrote and published a neighborhood newspaper. A pretty big endeavor for an eight-year-old armed with scrap paper and her dad’s old typewriter. Total circulation—two. Fortunately, her later publications fared better. She’s even made it beyond the first round in a contest or two.

A conservationist, Mavery has won a few environmental awards. So, it’s no surprise she yearns to write a high-speed chase with eco-friendly cars.

Beautiful Dangerous (Philly Heat series, #4)Beautiful Dangerous by Becky Flade
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you haven’t read anything from this author, do yourself a favor and pick this up! Although this is the fourth book in the Philly Heat series, you can absolutely read it as a standalone. I find myself hoping this author continuously releases books because they always surprise me! We get to read about Hannah and Doyle in this installment, and they both stole my heart right away. Emotions run high in this book as Hannah’s brother was tragically murdered, and Doyle is looking to do all he can to protect her from harm. I loved seeing their relationship evolve and the chemistry between them is electrifying! As with the previous books, I devoured this in one day because it’s a story you simply can’t stop in the middle of. It’s fast-paced, the tension is high, and the characters are divine. I highly recommend picking this book up without hesitation, and you’ll soon see why I rave about this author. Set aside your chores for the day, grab some tea, and get cozy because you’re in for a suspenseful nonstop read!

Wow! I am continually blown away by this author’s amazing creations! This is the third book in the Philly Heat Series, but you can definitely read it as a standalone. I have a feeling you’ll be running to pick up the rest of the series afterward! It took me a little bit to find my groove in the story, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. One of my favorite parts of this book is the characters. They are strong, unique, quirky and all over relatable. The book itself has plenty of tense situations, danger, suspense, and romance. What would you do if you uncovered a serial killer’s secrets? That’s the big question here. I won’t give anything away but do yourself a favor and get lost in this thrilling romantic suspense this afternoon. You’ll be glad you did! This author comes with a very high recommendation from me!

Dancing Butterfly is the second book in the Butterflies Fly Free Series. This one follows Suki that we met for a short time in book 1, although it is something of a prequel as well. While in book 1, Suki was already with Frank, in book 2 it shows their meeting and the beginning of their relationship.
This was an easy read and enjoyable, light on the spice so would be appropriate for YA. I do love books that take a unique time period and bring it to life and this series does that well.

Cutter: Devils’ Spawn Daddies by Victoria Saccenti – Review by Roxsanne Lesieur.

Cutter: Devils' Spawn DaddiesCutter: Devils’ Spawn Daddies by Victoria Saccenti
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Cutter is the sergeant at arms for the Devils Spawn MC and as such, he enforced the rules and although they are a one percenter club, they don’t engage in the usual criminal activity, so when Cutter is arrested when he tries to go to the rescue of an injured store clerk, he knows it is all because of the cut he wears and the stereotypes associated with it. What Cutter doesn’t expect is to have the same female officer with whom he has a history, it is Emily Mayhew, the one who arrested him the first time this happened, taking the blame for something he didn’t do, only now, she is a detective, however, the deal she proposes is even more surprising, but he is most definitely interested.

As the interview goes on, Emily realises that she is still attracted to Cutter’s type of trouble, just like last time she saw him, only now, she has the chance to act on it, but only if he feels the same way. The deal she puts on the table is to infiltrate a new MC, the Sons Of Chaos who have just moved into a neighbouring part of the city, this is bad because they have ties with some very unsavoury people, the kind of people who traffic objects and people, so she needs someone who can go undercover and a cop would be found out straight away.

Once Cutter has spoken to his prez and figured out how he can successfully infiltrate the group, they decide to tackle it the proper way, using the rules the other club have blatantly disregarded, however when Emily turns up in the wrong place at the wrong time, Cutter has no choice but to get involved. Much to both of their surprise, Cutter’s dominant side and Emily’s submissive side seem a perfect match, but will he be willing to accept her Middle and her his Daddy tendancies and will this distract them both from the mission at hand? This is a steamy MC romance with a kinky streak, as well as plenty of danger, darkness and light in this mile a minute tale with a hint of espionage within.

This book was a page-turner. If you’re looking for a story to pull you in, this is the one. I read the last 60% of the book in one sitting. I was a bit worried in the beginning because the main character, Margo, didn’t call to me. However, as the story went on, she had MAJOR character development and it was awesome to follow her growth. This story was unpredictable and was such a roller coaster. The only thing that I wished the story had was a more pronounced timeline, especially towards the end. I loved this story and I will be recommending it to others. I am also going to make sure I read more books from this author.

Portrait of Deception (A Southwest Suspense Novel)Portrait of Deception by Kathryn Dodson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So it’s said to never judge a book by its cover. Well the cover of Portrait of Deception is what drew me in. What I didn’t expect was how the contents of the novel played out. It wasn’t at all what I expected. The author wrote a twisted story that sucks the reader in. Bringing the reader into a world of fame, fortune, deception, fear, and dictatorship. Beautifully weaved together to give the reader a story that keeps them turning the page.
Margo thought she made it. However, when a fellow colleague as well as flame deceived her and took it all away she was left with nothing. A career that would take years to salvage, a crazy hotel repair bill, and an offer from a man that she doesn’t feel comfortable taking. Unfortunately she’s left with no choice. The president of Tiranistan had a twisted plan and Margo is the defining piece. He’s twisted, cruel, and gives off bad vibes so when tries to hold Margo captive she has no choice but to run for her life.
Will she get away?
Will that be the end?
Well at that point the stories really taken off and is left to the reader guessing which event will happen next. You can begin to guess the events by the clues the author leaves, it’s the order in which those events happen that keeps the reader on their toes.
If you want a well written book with some twists, turns, and a little bit of romance I suggest you jump right in.

Wowza. Talk about plot twists and action packed stories. I didn’t realize this was the 2nd book in a series, but I don’t feel like I missed out on anything by not having read the 1st book. Also, for me, this story did seem to maybe drag on a bit at times, but the action and all the things in the other parts of the story sure made up for it… By the end of the book I was on the edge of my seat and I didn’t want to put it down.

As the young photographer travels to Italy to compete for a coveted award, she declines an outrageous offer from a dishonest politician to enhance his reputation with a deft image. Everything goes wrong after she is charged for over $400,000 in damages to her hotel room. Who would do this and why? The twists and turns the story took were sometimes questionable but it was still easy to catch up with.

Portrait of Deception (A Southwest Suspense Novel) by Kathryn Dodson – Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

Portrait of Deception (A Southwest Suspense Novel)Portrait of Deception by Kathryn Dodson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Portrait of Deception is a fast paced, action packed, suspense filled thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final pages. The story centers around the character of a photographer named Margo who has been nominated for a prestigious award. If she wins the coveted Butler Prize it will not only help her financially but most of all it will open numerous doors for her and launch her career as a professional photographer. On the day of the award ceremony, Margo awakens in her motel room and discovers that it has been trashed and she must pay the hotel $46,000 in damages. Margo has no recollection of the night before because she blacked out. She was on her way back to her room with a fellow photographer who was also nominated for the prize and vaguely recalls seeing glimpses of faces of people she did not recognize. The rest of the night is a blank and she feels that she must have been drugged. Margo not only has to pay the hotel damages, but the Butler Prize Committee found out about damages to her room, and she is taken out of the running for the prize. Margo is horrified, shocked, and saddened that she now has this reputation and must find a way to salvage what is left of both her career and her reputation. She has no other option but to accept an offer put forth by a tyrannical and sleazy foreign politician to visit his castle and take his portrait for the sum of $100,000. Once there, things take a dark turn for Margo, and she must fight to save her life.

This was a gripping story with an intriguing storyline, well developed characters, and twists and turns that fully immerse you into the story. I immediately felt a connection to Margo because she is smart, feisty, determined, and courageous. As a photographer myself, I loved that she is a photographer and was really drawn into the scenes through the author’s vivid descriptions. I found myself wanting to stand alongside Margo and photograph the magic and beauty of the setting sun in the park, the old part of the city, and the graffiti. I must add that I loved the cover for this book! It captured my attention and had me picking up the book to read and I am so glad that I did.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m such a sucker for cover art ! Loving this one and it was definitely judging a book by its cover in this instance for me and yay it was a good judgement 😉

When I read the dedication I already teared up and I just want to say thank you to Sara Vinduska for being vulnerable , for sharing a piece of her heart ❣️

Hayden is out checking the ranch perimeters when he’s shot , there’s a blizzard on the way and home is far away especially in his injured state thank goodness for Gunner his trustworthy horse that gets him to safety , one of the rental cabins …..

Ruby is on the run and is hiding in a remote place , she can hear , breathe and heal she can also think of her next move , she’s just made a fire to warm her rental cabin when she sees a horse and a man slumped over in his saddle …..

Despite her fear she brings him in , he’s bleeding and has been shot after all she can’t just leave him and there I know she’s a survivor because despite her fear of her past she doesn’t hide away she takes the bull by the horns , you go girl !

Ruby and Hayden find their rhythm while she’s nursing him and like Ruby I love his milk drinking ways 😉 Hayden realises she’s on the run and being confined they start sharing with each other and there’s an undeniable chemistry between then and Hayden is a saint in so many ways , he’s gentle , patient , kind and caring but he’s also protective and when her past comes knocking on the door , things get scary but Hayden and his family are there and Ruby is enveloped within their family …..

This was a read that my heart didn’t even know it needed and the cherry on top was my milk drinking cowboy 🤠 loved every page and Ruby deserves the peace that Hayden brings to her 🥰

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Portrait of Deception (A Southwest Suspense Novel) by Kathryn Dodson. This is a newer author to me and my favorite genre so I wasn’t surprised that I loved this book. Its such a fast paced, mystery and thriller. Its the story of Margo a very talented photographer. Margo is about to win the prized Butler award for her photography so she is on top of the world career wise. When she is offered a job to photograph a politician she refuses because she knows he’s corrupt. The next morning she wakes up to a trashed hotel room with no recollection of how or what happened. The damages amount to 40,000 and she of course does not have that. She ends up being disqualified for the Butler award. She then ends up in a dictator’s castle who is basically a stalker and she feels like she has been imprisoned. Will Margo be able to clear her name and get out of this crazy castle. Finding all kinds of secrets, lies and mysteries within the confines of this castle Margo is beginning to fear for her life. Such a fun fast paced thriller! Can’t wait to read more from this author.

This woman goes on quite the journey. I enjoyed reading this fast paced story. Never really knowing what would happen next or who I could trust. I like stories that make it difficult for me to figure it out. I always had hope just like Margo does and was not disappointed in the ending. I could easily see myself reading more by this author.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Portrait of Deception ended up being far better than I expected. I didn’t really know what it was about when I started reading it, I was just drawn in from the cover art. The book kept me engaged until the very end, and was filled with suspense. Margo’s entire life crumbles in one night. Then the little that remains is torn away from a bad decision. However, going through all the drama that results, she changes her view of life and what is important to her. I was happy with the ending of the book, and look forward to reading more by the author. It looks like this may become a series, so I’m excited to see what is to come next.
