Night Justice (A Chicago Vigilantes Novel) AUDIO BOOK by India Kells – Review by Robin Rankin

Night Justice by India Kells and Narrated by Dan Price

I have listen to lots of audiobooks over the last few years, especially while working and discovered very early on that the narrator could make me love or hate the book regardless of the story.

Mr. Price did a great job reading and the voice modulator was a great touch.  I would get so lost in the story that I would just stop doing everything else and listen.

Great story and narration which I throughly enjoyed every minute of.

Night Justice (A Chicago Vigilantes Novel) AUDIO BOOK by India Kells – Review by Dani Dando

This started off pretty interesting, thought the idea of The Vigilante had an echo of batman to it which piqued my interest. Don’t really know how I felt about the romance aspect of it as I thought it was a tad unbelievable, it moved far too fast for me, getting hot and heavy before either character had really had time to land. I mean I had some pretty awesome impressions of Orla when first introduced; strong-willed, savvy, and smart, but then she very quickly makes some decisions that had me baffled.
I will say that I am not keen on these types of stories but for those that do like the steamy stories this is for you, with the added spice of the danger and the thrill of a mystery. The narration is pretty good too and kept me interested. I find that sometimes if the narration isn’t that good, I will switch off and struggle to take in the tale, but there was no issue with this, Price was engaging and a great storyteller.
With all those things said I will say that Kells has penned a really interesting tale, I just wish there had been more of the aspects that interested me. Anyone that likes a good smoldering romance with all the beats and action of a thriller will love this.

Night Justice – Audio Book

5 stars

There was plenty of action from the very start. The characters in the story were great. I really liked Orla, she was strong, determined and wasn’t going to back down. I really enjoyed reading about her. I loved that there was a little romance in the story too. When Orla and The Vigilante meet their connection and chemistry was undeniable!

I really enjoyed the narration, it was easy to listen to and I felt like the time just flew by as I settled down to listen.

Night Justice is a fantastic 5 star story, it has some darker romance elements to it which I loved! I am really excited to listen to the next book in the series.

Five Stars

Night Justice is the first book in A Chicago Vigilante series by India Kells. India Kells is one of my go to authors and this book is my new favorite. This book had me listening long into the night and I couldn’t put it down until I listened to the end. It was well worth my lost sleep. This dark thriller is full of action, adventure, mystery, and romance. The characters were well defined and very relatable. Orla Karlsen is a reporter who goes undercover to save the city from a new drug that could destroy it. The Vigilante is a dark savior who is catching bad guys, when the two meet sparks fly. Both have issues with trust, which can lead to death or glory. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book in this series.

Dan Price is a wonderful narrator, this is the second book I have  listened to that he has done. He really brought the characters to life. His voice is smooth and sexy sounding. This was an overall great listening experience.

Murder Creek: An Eve Sawyer Mystery by Jane Suen – Reviewed by Roxsanne Lesieur.

Murder Creek (Eve Sawyer #1)Murder Creek by Jane Suen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Eve Sawyer is a journalism student, but she also has these heightened senses which she cannot ignore nad they help in some situations, but they also won’t leave her alone and settle when they start up and when she is minding her own business and driving home when she drives over a bridge with a sign saying “Murder Creek” and she gets a prickling sensation in her spine and the almost overwhelming need to look down at the creek and know what happened there and this feeling of agitation and restlessness didn’t leave until she had gotten home and looked up the name and in doing so finds out about two significant events, a murder of a group of men on the banks in the 1800’s and a missing girl, Lucy Walken from twenty years ago. When Eve gets to college the next day, she immediately goes to see her professor to ask for him to give her an incomplete grade so that she can go and investigate what happened at Murder Creek over the summer break, he reluctantly agrees and so when shehas finished with everything else to complete her other classes, she heads to Murder Creek and finds a motel to stay in while also finding out that there will be a funeral that weekend and if she wants to stay in the motel longer, she will have to let the owner know in advance.

When she gets settled, she calls the contact her professor had said may help her with the investigation, so they agree to meet at the local diner and they talk about what she is in town for over dinner, he agrees to help her and to start, will take her to Murder Creek itself. That night Eve can’t sleep because of the horrific dreams she has of the two cases, but nevertheless, she is up and ready when her guide shows up, when they get there, the scene is peaceful, the complete opposite of the images which assault her senses, but when she goes to where Lacy’s bloody scarf was found, she only got the prickling sensation, but thankfully, no more images and when Eve returns to her room, she goes over her notes and makes a list of what she needs to find out. She looks at the phone book and finds the listings for Walken’s, she calls the two she finds and arranges to meet one the next morning, but the other just tells her she can’t be of any help. Later on, Eve is taken to see the sheriff as a courtesy to tell him what she is doing there and to ask him what he knows, but he is quite closed off and won’t help them, but Eve has another way to get the information she wants and asks to go to the newspapers main office and places an ad in for anyone to call her if they have any information.

As Eve digs deeper into the case and learns more about Lacey, she realises that this beautiful girl was more than meets the eye and whatever happened to her doesn’t quite match up and when she starts talking to people, something still doesn’t seem to add up, but it seems that the key detail is still missing and she worries that she may never know what it is when it turns out that the funeral is for one of the towns main benefactors.

Will Eve be able to uncover the truth about what happened to Lacey, or will the dead ends and lost leads conspire against her? This is a mystery to get your teeth into and will keep you guessing until the very end.

This is the first book in the Chicago Vigilantes series.  This story follows Orla, a reporter that is trying to stop the distribution of a new drug called Phantom, that is rumored to be heading towards her city.  She also wants to find out who this Vigilante is that is taking care of the bad in his own way. Orla goes underground and this is where she meets the Vigilante.  The Vigilante is also on his own quest to find out where these drugs are coming from and who is distributing them.  They join up together – in more than one way.

When she hears rumors of a new drug about to overtake Chicago, reporter Orla Karlsen is desperate to defend her city and will stop at nothing to halt its distribution, including stepping into Chicago’s underworld. She has a second agenda—to uncover the person dispensing his own brand of justice to those on the wrong side of the law—the Vigilante.
The Vigilante fights to protect the city in darkness and shadows. His latest goal is to track down the suppliers of the new drug and stop them before users start dying, and he targets Orla as a way to get information.
Their common quest will intersect in a fiery showdown and they’ll need to trust each other to untangle a mess of lies, power, and danger. Orla seizes the opportunity to learn more about the man behind the mask and agrees to work with him to bring down those behind the new drug.

The connection between them builds into an undeniable sexual need neither of them can fight and despite the danger, they can’t stay away from each other.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Not One of Us by Debbie Herbert is a suspense/mystery story. This is my first by this author and I loved her writing style. She kept you on the edge of your seat, but without a bunch of filler. The relationships were intricate and well connected. I was pleased that she had characters from all walks of life including an autistic nephew. The main characters Teagan & Jori were strong females who each had their own backstory that made them human. This book had such a great secret that brought it all together and kept me completely enthralled from beginning to end.

Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie: A Gripping Thriller (Jake Wolfe Book 1) by Mark Nolan
4 out of 5 Stars
This book is the first in the Jake Wolfe series and let me tell you that it is very fast-paced. I love crime, drama, mystery, and murder genres. But the book had my head reeling. This wasn’t at all bad at times. I loved the fast action most of the time. Similar to when you are watching a good movie and the fight scene is just THAT good. But I did find myself having to go back and reread a few portions to figure out something because there was much to the plot that I could not remember it all. However, having said all that, If I was ever in trouble, I would want Jake Wolfe to come to bail me out, because, dang. That man can really help a girl out. Jake is a war vet who is determined to protect those around him from the trouble that seems to find him.
This is a good book for lovers of mysteries, suspense, action, and adventure. The character dialogue is hilarious and the action is fast.

I absolutely love this series and was really looking forward to reading something featuring Karina set somewhere outside Washington DC, and this absolutely lived up to my expectations! There’s plenty of action and danger as always, and when Karina makes mistakes and impulsive decisions, her friends are always there to help her pick up the pieces. I couldn’t put it down as usual and there are lots of details that add to the story. Can’t wait for the next book!

Pharaoh’s Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mysteries Book 4) by Ellen Butler is such a lighthearted little mystery tale. I love these books featuring Karina Cardinal. She truly is a woman that trouble seeks. It is witty, sarcastic and sounds so much like plain ordinary people, except for the Silverthorne folk of course. This was a quick and easy read for me because I just enjoyed it so much. And when I thought it was over there were still surprises at the end. You can’t go wrong with this one.

I give Pharaoh’s Forgery: Karina Goes on Vacation (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 4) by Ellen Butler, 5 stars.

I always forget just how good this series is until I start the next book and find myself unable to put it down. This book is no exception. I was pulled in from the very beginning. I like how they moved the location to another country. The change in setting was refreshing while still maintaining everything this series is know for. I liked how it was not all about DC and politics, now revolves around ancient relics. There is still a lot of adventure and twists and turns in the story, it is both thrilling and gripping.

Then there are the characters. Karina is great as always. She feels real, not always making the most popular decisions, but ones she feels strongly about. I like how we got to know more about her neighbor, Mrs. Thundermuffin. I could tell from previous books that she was definitely an interesting character and I was so great that the author told us so much more about her in this book. I also like how Rodrigo was more of a main character in this book too. Again, he seemed like an interesting character previously, but I had no idea just what he was made of. This book shows us.

If you like a thrilling mystery suspense with great characters and a gripping story, this book and series are for you. In my opinion, this can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading all of them since they are so good.

Another amazing anthology from some pretty amazing authors  and worth every minute spent reading.

I’m only going to highlight the first book in the anthology which is Two Hearts Truce by Tamara Ferguson.

I fell in love with Jeff the moment he was in a non-combat setting in the previous book.   There was something very charming  about him, well the charm didn’t go away.  He is as charming if not more so once you really get to know him.  He is just an amazing guy who deserves to be happy.

Amanda is a lot to deal with at first, she’s not pleasant or all that likable.   Then you peal back a little bit and start to see a bit of the real her and learn her secrets and her personality makes sense.

You get laughs, love and suspense all in this first book.  Enjoyed every moment of it.

Pharaoh's Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 4)Pharaoh’s Forgery by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pharaoh’s Forgery is the fourth book in Ellen Butler’s Karina Cardinal Mystery series and we are going on a short girls’ holiday to Mexico with Karina … or so we think! It is always a pleasure to meet up with Karina and her kooky circle of friends and the enemies, the enemies tend to take the cake, every time!
Karina is going to Cancun for some sun and margaritas while also dropping off a package to Mrs Thundermuffin and you can guess what she does … Karina opens the Pandora Box and off we go onto a crazy ride with kidnappers and murderers and conmen. It is really good that Karina has friends in right places as she really needs some help to get herself and her fellow lobbyist Rodrigo back home in one piece! I loved how the writer had used her extensive research into the Brazilian National Museum fire to bring alive the story so that we were biting our nails at times and probably praying to ourselves ‘please, please, please …’

Pharaoh’s Forgery: Karina Goes on Vacation (Karina Cardinal Mystery #4) by Ellen Butler

Butler has this way of making you love her books. This is part of the Karina Cardinal Mystery Series and damn if it’s not a good one. You will want to read this even if you haven’t read the first 3.

Karina, K.C. as Mike calls her finds that she may be going on vacation alone. Her sister is down, her mom is taking care of Jill, and her boyfriend is working. Once on vacation she finds herself in trouble. The quote I chose for Karina is: “Not a word. Not a f***ing word.”

Mike, FBI Agent, has to work and feels bad about Karina going alone. He surprises her, but instead he’s the one who gets the surprise. He doesn’t like that she finds herself in trouble. The quote I chose for Mike is: “It’s Tuesday. Are you going to take Rick up on his offer?”

Highly recommended if you love crime, drama and romance.

I am actually new to this Anthology, if the rest of the books are anything like this one, I’m sure I will love them all. I had no problem following the story and figuring out how the characters were connected. This is one of the best romances I’ve read recently. Jeff & Amanda dated back in high school. Like many young loves, they didn’t last. They continue to be in each other’s lives but don’t realize that each one was still attracted to the other. Will they make it past the reason they broke up?

Pharaoh's Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 4)Pharaoh’s Forgery by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pharaoh’s Forgery is the fourth book in Ellen Butler’s Karina Cardinal Mystery series. Like in the previous books, the plot is driven by Karina’s impressive ability to get wrapped up in dangerous, mysterious crimes. Pharaoh’s Forgery combines exotic holiday (to Mexico, not Egypt as the title might suggest) with the theft and forgery of historical artefacts.
In this book, Karina draws on her growing network of friends and useful contacts to help her out with the trouble she inevitably finds herself in. I particularly enjoyed getting to spend some more time with Rodrigo, Karina’s charismatic co-worker, and Mrs Thundermuffin, her eccentric neighbour. It was fun having characters who feel like old friends around, and to learn more about them.
This is a great read for anyone missing going on holiday and exploring museums (and I imagine will be an enjoyable holiday read when we can travel again!). Butler does a good job of describing the places Karina visits, and we get plenty of time to enjoy the hotel (and the food! I was hungry just reading it!).
For me, this is a five-star read. It’s a really good series and I’m enjoying seeing Karina grow and develop as she gets used to the trouble that seems to follow her around and learns how to protect herself. It’s worth starting at the beginning, with Isabella’s Painting, to get to know Karina and meet some of the supporting characters.

I recommend reading the books in order because of development to the characters and relationships, but this can be enjoyed as a standalone book. Karina is finally getting a well-deserved vacation away from D.C. Of course, as usual things don’t go as planned for Karina. This story has crime, thrills, mystery, laughs, and more. I always enjoy Karina’s adventures and her partners in getting her out of trouble and solving the case. Karina is smart, full of adventure, but also conscientious and not a detective. Trouble just seems to find her in the unlikeliest of places. I look forward to reading more in Karina’s mysteries in the future and more from this author.

Two Heart’s Truce by Tamara Ferguson

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, but it won’t be my last. Ferguson has a way of bringing her worlds to you. This is a fantastic read.

Amanda, the little sister to Jeremy, is now living with her brother. When the past comes to the wedding she doesn’t know what to think or who to trust. The quote I chose for Amanda is: “Yes. Let’s start over.”

Jeff, Air Force Sergeant, finds that he’s never gotten over Amanda. At his friend’s wedding he finds that the feelings are mutual. The quote I chose for Jeff is: “So, I have permission to spend the night, since Jeremy and Christine offered to take me to the airport in the morning. The flight takes off at seven. I’m leaving the rental here for you to use until my truck arrives for you. One of my buddies has offered to drive it here with a load of my stuff next week. I’ll probably pack most of it up tomorrow afternoon when I arrive since I had to take such an early flight.”

Highly recommended for romance lovers.
