Can’t wait for more!!

This is an amazing fantasy novel that combines romance a strong female main character and trials of strength, skill, and knowledge! The author does an amazing job in world building and character development. Talise is a strong character who is trying to get herself and her family out of poverty by going through and Academy and then through multiple trials.  I can’t read the next few novels!!!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Elements of the Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria Book 1) by Kay L. Moody contains the first four books of this series and I dare you to be able to stop after just one. This is my first book by Ms. Moody and it contains everything that I personally love in a good book. Full of magic, some romance, an incredible female lead, and fun this book has something for everyone. These novellas are also written beautifully, have a strong female lead, with some supporting characters, the plot is full of jusy enough twists and turns to keep the reader hooked until the very end. So of your looking for a good new series to start then I highly recommend The Elements of the Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria Book 1) by Kay L. Moody.

The Elements of the Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria #1) by Kay L. Moody

This is the first book I’ve read by Moody. The Elements of the Crown is a great read. This is the first book in The Elements of Kamdaria Series.

Talise is being sent away and she isn’t sure how she will deal with it. She is supposed to be the big deal, but then comes along another person. This guy will be the downfall of Talise or so she thinks. The quote I chose for Talise is: “How will you survive? Academy training lasts ten years.”

Aaden goes to the academy thinking he’s the best of the best. When he gets there he finds that he’s got to beat another person for the highest spot. The quote I chose for Aaden is: “Let’s go. I’m sure the emperor wants you back in your living quarters.”

Highly recommended for YA Fantasy lovers.

The Elements of the Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria Book 1) by Kay L. Moody – Review by Hansini Wasalamudalige

The Elements of the Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria, #1)The Elements of the Crown by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

‘The Elements of the Crown’ by Kay L. Moody is the first book of ‘The Elements of Kamdaria’ series. It follows the journey of Talise as she strives to gain the title of ‘Master Shaper’ who has the honour of working directly with Kamdaria’s Emperor and is Talise’s last and only chance to rise out of generations of poverty and prejudice. A major highlight of the story is Moody’s worldbuilding- Kamdaria comes across as a living and breathing place with its class structures, beliefs, politics and institutions described in full and elaborate detail. Kamdaria’s lore isn’t explored in a way that’s ham-fisted or entirely expository- readers learn about this world through Talise and the other characters, their actions and the narrative itself. It also helped that Kamdaria was just so interesting- its inhabitants have the ability to ‘shape’ or control the elements of water, earth, fire and wind and it was a delight to discover how this society was modelled after this power afforded to most of its citizens and how it would affect its functioning.

A story is only as good as its characters and ‘‘The Elements of the Crown’ doesn’t disappoint. Talise is such a fleshed out and compelling protagonist and Moody allows for readers to sympathise with her easily- her bravery and determination is truly inspiring given her dire situation and background. At times, I found myself rooting for her, gasping at the sudden obstacles in her way or crying for her. The secondary characters are just as interesting and deep as Talise- Aaden Sato, for instance, is more than he appears and, despite his situation being so much different than Talise’s, their similarities are startling and its fascinating to see how Kamdaria’s governing laws can both disadvantage the weak and the strong and the poor and the rich in equal measure. Another notable character is the elusive Emperor of Kamdaria himself, Emperor Flarius, who’s machinations and schemes are delicious to untangle and discover.

In conclusion, if you’re in the market for a book with a rich storyline and characters, then picking up ‘The Elements of the Crown’ is a must. It is an excellent first entry and I cannot wait to read more.

The Elements of the Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria, #1)The Elements of the Crown by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Talise claws her way up from the bottom, as she lives in a world of outcasts, shunned from society, full of poverty, crimes of necessity and neglected misunderstood families. She is an innocent young girl that manages to find a way out and is given an opportunity to join rejoin society once again. She’s blessed with incredible magical powers that are unheard of. Along the way she meets a boy who is first her rival but soon comes to mean so very much more to her. I really enjoyed watching her incredible journey as she grows as a person and develops and hones her powers. This book is packed with magic, action, romance, heartbreak and loss, along with some plot twists that have left me eager to read the next book in the series. The author has done an amazing job of creating a magical world that you quickly get drawn into from the very first page.

A well developed tale of a young girl faced with a difficult future, Talise can bend (or manipulate) the elements. I truly enjoyed the Easter eggs the author added to the story and details such as the map really help the reader see what the author intended. I found out this was written as novellas after I read it and I couldn’t tell. I genuinely thought I was reading a well thought out and put together novel. I couldn’t put this book down until I finished it. I can’t wait to start on book 2 in the Elements of Kamdaria series!

This started out slow for more me but as I got more involved, it really picked up for me. I enjoyed the elemental magic as well as the competition and strategy. There were several plot twists which really helped keep the hook that initially piqued my interest. This book felt like others I have read in this genre but with its own unique twist. I read this with the mindset of the target audience and I think that is what helped me feel connected when reading it. Overall worth the read.

What a great fantasy book! Talise, the main character has the ability to shape the four elements. She finds herself going to the academy to help shapers hone in their abilities. There was so much to this book that I really enjoyed. Especially the development of the main character at the end of the story. I love how the character really came together and tied down the story.

Genre: Fantasy & Young Adult

This is book one of the new best series out there I can sense it I am so excited for book two.
Moody is the new Mead, I did not put this book down it is just adventure adventure adventure.

The Elements of the Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria, #1)The Elements of the Crown by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Talise is only a child living in the empire of Kamdaria, but she is also one of the lowest caste of people who live there, she lives in the third ring known as Storm, it is a brutal place where the only people who survive there are criminals and there is no way out, once you are sent there, every generation which follows remains. Talise however, has something which the others around her don’t and because of this, the only other member of her family takes her to the middle ring of the empire, known as the Gate, it has taken years to get her there, but now they have arrived, they will not take no for an answer to their demands.

The reason Talise has come to the Gate region is so that she can be tested to see whether she can earn a place at the Academy where those with a talent for shaping the elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water are tutored and taught all they need to become Shapers. Nobody from Storm has ever been a Shaper and so when they turn up at the end of the day, they are automatically dismissed as vermin and treated like scum, however, when her family is about to be assaulted, Talise shows exactly what she can do and earns herself a place in the Academy.

After she says goodbye and promises to become a Master Shaper, Talise spends the next ten years preparing to do just that, she is determined and works harder than anyone else there and surpassing them at every stage, that is until a young man in the same year proves that he is a worthy adversary. As the day of the final testing and competition arrives, Talise is struggling to concentrate and makes a decision which has consequences she never dreamed of and because of this, she has to share the title of Master Shaper with the one person she couldn’t stand and now thanks to a daring scheme, they have to work together, however, hating each other is harder than expected. As they face numerous trials, an unexpected attraction builds between them, however fate is not on their side as dark secrets emerge all around them, but will they be able to work together in order to survive, or will the future be as bleak as if they were still in the Storm?

This is a fast paced rollercoaster of action, magic, secrets and emotional turmoil as decisions are made and consequences are rendered in this world where elements are used to the advantage of some and disadvantage of others, all the while asking the hard questions of how war and prejudice can affect the society around it.

This book captured my attention from the very beginning. The magic system was interesting and the characters were well thought out. The main character has many terrible cards dealt to her, and experiencing her tackle each obstacle put in her way made this book such an enjoyable read. I also enjoyed the many plot twists. Talise is a character to route for from the start, but even as she rises up to each challenge, I liked that they didn’t all go her way. The story has action, magic, heartbreak, plot twists, and a touch of romance. I will definitely be looking into other works by Kay L Moody!

Talise and Aaden are great characters in this story and I cannot wait to continue the series! There is so much love, hate, and mixture of emotions to keep you looped in it all. You start off with a young Talise who comes off the storm to go to an academy since she has the elements needed in the future. We go ten years later where she is about ready to go to the testing to determine her future. The neighbor on the storm who helped her though passes and throughs her emotions everywhere. Now Aaden appears, and the new adventure starts where they are forced to work together to get the goal they want. Great job on this book!

I really enjoyed most of this book. I did have a few issues which are listed below. Otherwise I love the characters and the world that is built. As the story moved along I came to love the characters and “hope” for some love between a couple characters. I went through ups and downs..enjoying characters then disliking or becoming suspicious of them. It is a crazy kind of good!

This is my only issue with the stories. I felt at times it was overly long. I get this is four short books put together so I’m not sure if they could have been shortened a bit. I did skim a bit in the fire crown….so maybe.

Overall I really did enjoy the story and the characters are well developed. I wasn’t a fan of the ending….just like Talise.

Wow – that was an awesome read! I can only describe it as reminding me of The Hunger Games and Avatar: The Last Airbender with several other twists and turns thrown in. This book literally sucked me in from the beginning. I love the use of the manipulation of the main four elements, while also modifying them for use in other ways. I struggled to put this down (a person does have to sleep!) and really enjoyed it. Talise and Aaden are great main characters to follow, each with their own secrets and struggles that held me through to the end. I can’t wait to read the sequel!

This book definitely catches you in its grip! Ms. Moody did a great job really building this world and its social structures- which I enjoyed the most- and the characters are very relatable. Watching the main character, Talise, evolve from where she was before joining the training for shapers to where she is at the end of the book in the center of the country is great! The trials she faced and her frustration at what was happening to her and around her definitely keep you wanting to know more. The social and political turmoil that is going through the country of Kamdaria was something to pique anyone’s interest if that is your cup of tea-I sure did. This novel does seem to pull inspiration (in my humble opinion) from Avatar: The Last Air Bender and I LOVED THIS! I have yet to run across it through my previous novels and enjoyed the novelty of it! Even though I enjoyed this book immensely, I was rather put off by the jarring inclusion of a relationship with one of the main characters. It seemed to have come out of nowhere and I struggled with why this would develop between these characters. I can appreciate Talise’s inner turmoil about this attraction, but why was she attracted at all? I hope to see more of a reason in book two, and maybe I can understand where Ms. Moody is coming from here.

This book had so many elements that I love reading! Magic, the magic used to shape the elements was so interesting to learn about. Training for the elements and learning how to shape them at an elite academy that takes ten years. Learning the theory behind the shaping of elements. The people living in different rings of the empire: the Storm, the Gate, and the Crown. A competition between classmates and enemies who need to work together to survive. Seeing the love and mark a family can leave on a person even when they aren’t around all the time. I couldn’t picture the rings of the empire very well so I wish there would have been a bit more world building. Overall, this book is great and includes action, fighting, romance, humor, family connections, and so much more. I loved it more and more as I read!

Kay L. Moody has given us a story that is original and amazing. The characters are so well connected and personalized that you can feel the life and depth that each brings to the story. You can clearly imagine the vivid imagery of this world created and picture each scene as it takes place.

Talise is like no character I have experienced before. A citizen of Storm she is given the opportunity to leave the criminal planet and attend the academy as a means to better her life. Having the ability to yield all 4 elements she is already at the top of the game and on her way to her dream profession of a Master Shaper.
Aaden who is a her rival and biggest competitor shares a complicated history with Talise, but also one where hate rivals their love. A very unpredictable and exciting piece of Talise’s puzzle that you leads to more twists and turns. This fantasy book will not allow you to stop reading until the end, and every moment is worth it.

I really enjoy every book that I have read of Ms. Moody’s so far, but I have to say this collection of novellas, The Elements of the Crown, has to be my favorite I have read of hers so far. This has just about everything you could want in a fantasy and adventure read. I was constantly on the edge of my seat and found myself struggling to put this sucker down to get anything done in the adulting world. I mean this is a sign of a good book though so what could be wrong with that?!? I loved how this book had so many different layers to it. Even though it is labeled as a young adult genre novel, I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved it as a middle aged woman and feel like it had a wonderful balance of romance, suspense, adventure, intrigue, and more, all on a level that could be enjoyed at many ages. I am excited to see what comes next in this series and whatever collection may come next from Kay L. Moody!

I think this book is pretty awesome. First of all I love the idea of shaping elemnts… I always wanted to do it myself but you guys know… is not quite possible.
They whole story around Talise is pretty awesome. We are not talking about someone who had everything but someone who worked for what she has and honestly it shows us how worth it is it.
In my opinion the world building is pretty amazing because is not easy to create a world that you truly believe is real. I felt I was going to get outside my house and be instantly there.
I love the work Kay L. Moody has done here and I can confident say that if you love elements shapers and a great story, this book is for you.
I don’t know if I have any more word to describe how great it is and unbelievable how much someone can get immerse in this world.

This is a collection of a book series by an author that I’m very familiar with thanks to other books from her that I have read. I think she has a wonderful way of describing her characters and the world building is simply fabulous. I love that she decided to take the first four books in this series and make them into one book. I’m always a fan of an omnibus. This series is written for the young adult readers but as me and several of my friends have decided it’s more worthy of being an adult novel. However, if you would like your young adult to read it, they will thoroughly enjoy it as well. This is a book that is very innocent and decent for the younger reader in your life and would make a great Christmas gift if you wanted to gift it. I got a bit of a Harry Potter feeling while reading it because these kids are also sent to an academy to help learn and hone their own magical crafts. I am a huge fan, and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the next collection of this series.

The Elements of the Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria, #1)The Elements of the Crown by Kay L. Moody
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Elements of the Crown is the first book in the Elements of Kamdaria by Kay L Moody and is a combination of four novellas: Ice Crown, Wind Crown, Dust Crown, and Flame Crown. It is a story about a girl named Talise who came from the farthest reaches of the Kamdaria where the criminals reside, the Storm. No one leaves the storm unless they can shape elements and become a Master Shaper. Ten years of training at an elite academy for a chance to compete before the Emperor for the title of Master Shaper. For a girl from nowhere she has more skills than anyone in her training until Aaden arrives at her academy to train for the last year with skills that rival her own. The story follows these two main characters who have both trained for this moment. Who will be the chosen by the Emperor? What fate does that really entail for them next?

The story was a page turner that kept me reading to find out what would happen next. Trying to figure out the motives and next moves for the different characters was a continuous cycle from start to end. It kept me hooked with all the plot twists. Her character and world building were great. I enjoyed this book and cannot wait to continue reading with the next book.
