The Vardoger Boy (The Forerunner Saga Book 2) by Jay Veloso Batista – Review by Shelly Kittell

The Vardoger Boy (Forerunner Series)The Vardoger Boy by Jay Veloso Batista
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book 2 in the trilogy. Finn and his family are on adventures again. Agne and Cub are at the battle of Wessex. This is a large and hard fight. Many are lost, including family, and many are taken for ransom. Finn and Raga are out with Uncle Karl and the crew to help them. On the way, a troll on the boat traps Finn in between realms to perform a task for him. What an adventure this is. Most of the time the crew do not know what is going on. Kara and the rest of Finn’s family have been left at home and are dealing with blood feuds, being driven from their home and other misadventures. This is another excellent book in the journey of Thorafinn. The plot is adventurous. The excitement is on every page. There are three plotlines going and the author does a great job of intertwining them together so that they do connect. I enjoyed the storyline of the womenfolk That was my favorite because they overcame big odds. The characters are really written well. Martine is a sneaky character that I would love to see more of so I hope she is written in more in Book 3. That cliffhanger grabbed me. I can’t wait to read the next book. I recommend this trilogy to fantasy lovers.

Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse (The Forerunner Saga Book 1) by Jay Veloso Batista – Review By Janel Bernotas

Wonderful book! I personally love Norse mythology and history so this was one I couldn’t put down. It was a little difficult at first to keep the names and families straight. Thorfinn inherits the generational curse imposed by a witch and receives the ability to morph between being a human, and being a ghost. As a ghost he can eavesdrop on conversations. He can learn of planned attacks on his family, as well, in his ghost form. The tale leaves you turning pages late into the night. I really loved this one, and look forward to reading more books by Jay Veloso Batista! Highly recommend!

A YA book, Viking Style!
If you like Norse Mythology or were a fan of the TV show Vikings, this is a great YA book! This book is really in depth into the entire Alfenson clan. The story switches between the family homestead, mostly focusing on little Thorfinn the youngest son and his special gifts, and Karl Alfenson and his Viking crew on their journey.
The story touches on the everyday life on a Viking homestead without feeling like it bogs down in mundane details. Then throws lore from the Gods and magic into the story to really add something extra. I feel like younger readers with a love of Norse mythology and even adult readers will really enjoy this one!

This book was an amazing start to the series. This author is a hidden gem and this book proves it!! The story is set historically and we are met by the Norse, Vikings, and descendants of old England.
Thorfinn our main character is only a young boy being just 10, but he truly cements his place in the story. He develops so much within the story and his transformation of boy and ghost send him on many adventures. The supporting casts and multiple POV mixed in with the the vivid details really feed the readers imagination. This was a book I think all would enjoy and book 2 is already on my TBR.

I struggled getting into this book. I couldn’t keep track of the characters or what was going on. Once into it, it does get better. I would recommend this to an older reader. It’s a little confusing at first getting through all the names. Very interesting story of a young viking boy. I’m looking forward to reading the next book.

Thorfinn and the Witch's Curse (The Forerunner Series #1)Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse by Jay Veloso Batista
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was enjoying the efforts that this author put into historical accuracy, up to and including the names of places, as well as the older spellings of some of the names from the Norse Gods. I found the intro to be something of a slow start, and you don’t quite start in the middle of it all, though it is close.

I found I had something of a mental disconnect for awhile before I started to properly grasp what was going on. I did enjoy seeing an author draw more openly from Norse mythological elements as opposed to the Greco-Roman style.

Personally I have been a long time fan of anything involving mythology, though it was a different take to see a child as the main character. Thorfinn does develop as a character quite a bit while coming to terms with his own strange abilities, as well as going up against the titular curse.

I would have loved to see a little more polish and coherence in the early novel, but other than that I didn’t have any significant gripes with the novel, and think many young readers could find hours of fun slipping inside this world. Subtly learning historical facts the whole while.

Thorfinn and the Witch's Curse (The Forerunner Series #1)Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse by Jay Veloso Batista
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this novel, to be honest. As an avid romance, mafia, dystopian, and suspense lover, this one was chosen by chance only, and of course, I was absolutely drawn to the sweet cover of this novel, and the fact that I hadn’t yet read anything by this author. I adore finding new others to binge read, as it’s getting to be summer, and what better way to exercise than to do so while having your kindle read to you? I can’t think one. Ultimately, this novel was something I am glad I picked up, and found it very heartwarming, and brought on a whole slew of emotions from start to finish.

With it being based well before our time, I love how the author was able to harness the energies from the characters, and to bring to light how important the idea of community is, no matter what your status, nor what time period we might be in. Family is important, as is our chosen families, and throughout this novel, Finn and his brothers and all others embark on a wild mystery, and it takes a village, for all things. The suspense, mystery, love, adoration, intrigue, character and world building all brought together made for an incredible adventure, this author makes reading/listening very enjoyable, and I am very much looking forward to seeing where the Viking seas take us to in the next installments. Well done!

Welcome to a viking ghost story you won’t be able to put down!!!

Thorfinn, a 9 year old boy is living under a curse. The curse was caused by his grandfather, who during a raid, killed a witch and she cursed 3 generations of their family.
“finn” who had been practicing his sparring, doing his chores and running after his brothers suddenly finds himself thrust into an entirely new world…and a new… existence by night!

Finn will have to come to terms with who and what he is and overcome fear, his young age and a family curse.

This book is colorful imaginative and descriptive. The glossary in the back is very helpful to keep characters straight as this is multi POV.

Thorfinn Agneson is a young boy of ten and he lives in the time of the Vikings, in the ninth century and he lives under the Danelaw and life is good, he spends his time training and doing chores with his brothers, spending time playing with his younger sister, teasing the older residents at his home and at night hearing tales of his ancestors and his heritage, as well as some other tales family members bring home on their travels, his father is also organising and apprenticeship for him, as well as planning for a large wedding. Meanwhile, his Uncle is travelling back home after voyaging for a long time, but his journey isn’t all smooth sailing as he meets some characters along the way and these are both friend and foe.

One day, Thorfinn and his brothers overhear a story about a curse and someone tells them where it takes place, so as a group, the young boys in the homestead decide to go on an adventure, however, they encounter something mysterious, but none of the boys understand it’s consequences until it is almost too late. They decide that they have to remedy their mistake and so go to confront the mysterious shadow and the witch whom they find controls this, however, as one of the brothers attack the fiends, the witch retaliates and attacks Thorfinn, but what he doesn’t realise until the next day is that it is not his body which has returned home.

As Thorfinn is battling the witch, his uncle is facing his fair share of foes including a shape shifting warrior and his pack of wolves, he also encounters a seer on a deserted island and others as he travels towards home. Thorfinn now has to learn what the witch’s curse has done to him and what this means for his life, so when it is explained that he is now a Vardoger and that his ghost will travel ahead of as a forerunner, he now has to learn about this new realm and the perils within it, there are advantages to this, such as overhearing conversations and learning about a world once hidden.

Will Thorfinn be able to master his new split life, both as a young boy in Midgard, as well as a ghost at night, will he be able to use his new skills to remove the witch’s curse as the threat they command lingers over the homestead? Will his Uncle return safely home and be able to spend time with his much missed family? This is a historical fiction filled with stories of the Viking life at the time, as well as a fantasy adventure weaved throughout which will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to know what will happen next as the twists and turns play out over the pages.

Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse is the first book in The Forerunner Saga by Jay Veloso Batista. It was a historical fantasy book. I was pulled into the story from the first page until the last page. I felt as if I was right in the thick of the story with the characters. The book includes ghosts and Vikings. The storyline has adventure, history, Norse mythology, and paranormal elements. The attention to detail is what held my attention. The story is about Finn, who starts the story as a normal boy. He is a part of the Viking Kingdoms in England. There was a witch’s curse that becomes Finn’s fate. He is by day a boy and a ghost at night. Finn has an adventure in his future. I highly recommend this book to follow Finn’s adventure.

This particular story takes place in a wondrous world… Midgard, the Viking Kingdoms of ninth century England. The imagery, vivid yet accurate, brought to mind a familiar style of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series. The story’s characters all had a unique feeling to them, and the plot was entertaining and interesting. From the beginning of the story, till the end, you are entertained and drawn to keep reading to find what happens next. Overall, this is a fascinating and excellent read, and one that I highly recommend, especially if you are drawn to and interested in Medieval and Norse mythology.

Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse is the first book in the Forerunner Saga series by Jay Veloso Batista. This is epic fantasy done well- with action, adventure, ghosts, Norse mythology, Vikings, curses, history, the supernatural, agendas, danger, paranormal elements, drama, challenges, mystery, fight scenes, detailed and descriptive storytelling, creative worldbuilding, and is told from multiple POV’s (which gives a great perspective of what is happening).
I came into this series a little backwards, having started on book three by accident, which proved to be a bit of a challenge for me. But I really was intrigued by the premise and after discovering that I was reading the third book, I went back to the beginning to read the first two books just to see if they would help me better appreciate the story. And I am glad that I did, as I did enjoy the story more, and felt that it helped ground me in the series better. There were still a lot of characters remember, and some interesting, if not difficult to pronounce names- but I didn’t have as much of an issue with it this time around.
As with the rest of the series, it is apparent that the author is very passionate about the subject matter and his story-telling- it’s evident that he put a lot of blood, sweat, heart, soul, and research into his work- which resulted in the rich, vibrant, and dynamic tale.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Jay Veloso Batista.

I’m a huge fan of anything related to Vikings, so I was thrilled to start this book, which is the start of The Forerunner Saga. Finn, the main character is very young, but is quickly thrown into a different way of life once the Witch’s Curse is revealed. Honestly I’m not sure how he managed to grasp the idea of what was changing in his life, let alone live through it. He is a strong young man, full of courage, curiosity and obviously resilient.

This book engages the reader and I think young adults will enjoy it. You will find a lot of historical details mixed with a bit of fantasy. The author did a fantastic job with the writing and apparent research into Viking/Norse mythology. I cannot wait to read book number 2.

This book was mesmerizing with it’s story line as well as the details it held. I was truly captivated with the adventure as well as the mythical components and legends of the Vikings. I was captivated and the author knew exactly how to keep the reader enticed as they read on! Loved this read!

Personally I loved the fine details that made me feel I was in the setting it self that the story takes place in. The ways of the people and the legends that are spoken of, it was very real. I really loved those components. I really enjoyed Finn’s coming of age as well! Finn came off to me as a sweet character at first glance, seeing what he went through in this adventure, really shaped his character growth. He was a character you rotted for through out the novel. The book was very hard to put down and captivating thoroughly in more ways than one! For sure, I am very much looking forward to the next in the series!

Amazing series that is a “legend” of a read! Not one to be passed up at any costs! I highly do recommend this must read book! It truly holds its appeal and captivation upon its reader! Loved it!

I love all things involving historical tales and worlds that seem so long ago from what we know today. The author does a brilliant job of depicting the scenery in the villages so much so I can envision walking amongst them myself.

This book starts out with Finn, a boy who does what he should and enjoys listening to the stories and legends of old. His father is preparing an apprenticeship for him and planning a wedding. Everything changes when a relative who has been exiled shows up and seemingly sets off a witch’s curse leaving Finn a normal boy during the day but a ghost at night. This leaves Finn on uneven ground having to deal with his enemies including the witch that cursed him and his fellow clansman who in their fear strike murder plots against him. While also figuring out how to manage his new existence and where he goes from here. Will Finn make it out of this ghastly existence mostly intact? Can Finn find a way to cope with his new existence?

This is a riveting tale that will draw you in right from the start and refuse to let you go. Now that I know there are more books in this series I will definitely hunt them down to find out what happens next. These characters are so engaging and the story keeps you engaged so you want to devour this book in one setting. If you like fantasy mixed with action, adventure, and history then definitely give this book a try. It was one heck of a ride from start to finish!

Thorfinn and the Witch's Curse (The Forerunner Series #1)Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse by Jay Veloso Batista
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel which is a mix of Viking and Saxon history, legends, adventure and a touch of fantasy, resulting in a real page turner. Set in the Viking Kingdoms of ninth century England, our young hero Finn, is living a normal, ‘Danelaw’ life. He practices his martial skills, does his chores and follows his brothers around, listening to scary stories of “ghostly curses, witches, soothsayers, and dangerous were-creatures”. Meanwhile, his father is plotting his apprenticeship and his family is preparing for a grand wedding. Everything changes for Finn, when his uncle sails home from the North having been exiled, and the the, “ghost of an ancient mage sits sentinel over his clan’s freehold”.

A witch’s curse then comes alive when a mishap turns Finn into a ‘Vardoger’, haunted by his own forerunner ghost. Suddenly the scary stories become a reality for Finn and he discovers a new realm beyond Midgard. Having to find his courage, a timid Finn struggles being a boy by day and a ghost by night, who even his own clan fears. As the witch is still hunting for revenge, Finn must defeat his enemies and save his uncle, whilst learning to live with his new half ghostly existence, and survive numerous murder plots. The descriptive narrative brings the setting vividly to life, and the added historical details make the era come alive as well. I loved the characters, especially Finn, who I felt engaged with throughout the story and I was really rooting for him! This was an exciting and engaging read, and I look forward to finding out what Finn and his clan will do in the next book.

Thorfinn and the Witch's Curse (The Forerunner Series #1)Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse by Jay Veloso Batista
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Thorfinn is a 10-year-old boy that gets caught up in his older cousin and brothers’ shenanigans and pays the price by becoming cursed. As he goes throughout his daily life, people start picking up on the strangeness that surrounds him at times. It doesn’t go unnoticed or ignored by others in surrounding towns either. As his clan is preparing for his sister’s wedding, he uncovers a plot to harm his family. Can he figure out how to use this curse to his advantage in time to save his family?

I enjoyed this first book in the series! It was lovely to meet the Agneson clan and get to know them. The author did a phenomenal job describing the landscape, the characters, the history of Vikings, and their lore. I truly felt ensconced in their world as I was reading!

If you like history mixed with fantasy, you will enjoy this book!

Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse (The Forerunner Saga Book 1) by Jay Veloso Batista – Review By Jenni Bishop

Thorfinn and the Witch's Curse (The Forerunner Series #1)Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse by Jay Veloso Batista
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse is the first book in the series. Fantasy, Scandinavian folklore, Vikings and Norse mythology what’s not to like? This award-winning story is told in multiple points of view bringing so much more depth and realism to the story. It is action packed and a fast paced read. I really enjoyed the rich and vivid narrative that brings the story to life. The historical, the folklore, the mythology and the characters and world building are magically woven in to an impressive fantasy action adventure. I was transported back in time where life was dangerous and epic battles were the norm. There is a cast of characters that I hope to see get their own stories. I love stories that involve history and the supernatural, magic and ghosts, witches and curses.

Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse is a must read.
