The Mourning IslandsThe Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells is an interesting read. The story is about the vet, Talmon Bonnett, who is dealing with PTSD from him serving in the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. He is hired by someone to spy on a wealthy resort owner. The characters are an interesting group. There is Talmon, mobsters, a wealthy couple, resort owners, and others. This book has some twists and turns in the story and not all the characters are whom they seem to be. There was a good story and the story flowed well. I really enjoyed the book and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

The Mourning Islands was a good 4 star read.

Talmon has been out of the hospital for about 2 years, he was in for PTSD. He is a veteran of the Battle of Mogadishu. He has been hired to go to the Mourning Islands and infiltrate into the lives of some people that are running a new resort on the island and spy on them.

He ends up befriending Claire, Rusty and Marlene who he falls for. When some truths are revealed about what he really needs to do, will he be able to do what is asked of him?

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It took me just a bit in the beginning to get pulled in, but once I was I couldn’t stop reading. We get mystery, romance and so much more. All of the secondary characters added a great element to the story. The plot was great and be prepared for some unexpected twist and turns. If you like thrilling mysteries with twists you will really enjoy this one. I look forward to reading more from this author.

The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells is my first book by this author and I am in love with this story. Douglas Wells does an amazing job of keeping on the edge of my seat and a plot that kept me guessing what was going to come next. There were a couple of times when I thought I knew what was going on it took a sharp right and quick left. It has murder, suspense, mystery and romance all rolled into one story. What does a resort, Cuban mobsters, and a veteran with PTSD all have in common? A really good book that you need to read.

The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells. I loved this book. Its fast paced and full of emotions and action. Its the story of Talmon Bonnett who has just been released from the hospital after the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. He has been suffering from PTSD but can usually contain it. He is hired by a wealthy couple to spy on Rusty Wing who has just built Mourning Island’s new resort. He puts himself right in the middle of Rusty’s circle, getting to know Rusty’s sad fiancee, his Cuban First mate Santos and Marlene, Rusty’s sexy sister. Talmon gets to know Marlene very well after he falls in love with her and his lies about why he is really there threatens all those relationships. In this book the good guys and bad guys tend to blur the line. Talmon is so confused because he has come to really care about these people but he also wants to do his job. There is action, suspense, mystery and twists right and left. This book left me emotionally spent! I loved it! Read The Mourning Islands to find out if Talmon survives this wild tale!

The genre of this book isn’t one that I would normally choose to read however I had seen it promoted on social media a few times and the blurb sounded intriguing so I thought that I would give it a go and I am so glad I did. It was a really interesting read that was really well written and it was nice to read something a little bit different too. I liked the suspense that ran throughout the book that kept me guessing the whole way through. The author had clearly put a lot of thought into the characters in the story and making sure that the way in which he wrote about them was sensitive and respectful to people who may also suffer the same condition. The authors writing was really detailed and whilst the storyline was a little complex I had no problems following what was happening and I was fully invested in what I was reading.
A really great read and one that I would highly recommend!

The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells is a book well worth reading. I have to say that this is not what I would normally pick to read but I am so glad that I went out of my norm, had I not I would have missed a beautifully written story. This book is going to take you on a journey that has a lot of layers, these layers for me anyway are suspense, mystery and a little romance. That’s enough to make the story well worth reading right? Well throw in twists and turns throughout the book, you won’t be able to turn the page quick enough to see what is happening next. I highly recommend you read this book; you won’t be disappointed.

This is a story full of mystery, murder and a little romance in the mix. This is a full length novel. Well worth the read.

I really love this story. It was a true rollercoaster of suspense.uv Never a dull moment. Talmon is an veteran, suffering from PTSD. His duty with the Army may have ended, but the nightmares have not. Not long out of the hospital, he gets hired as a spy. That is where the story takes off.

Douglas Wells has written yet another fast paced suspense story. I really have come to like this author. He has a way of getting you worked up. The emotional settings, the romance and the killings all brought out the feels. I fell in love with his characters and want to read more. Keep them coming Douglas Wells!

The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells is an intriguing read that I was able to dive right into. This crime thriller is about Talmon, a veteran who suffers from PTSD and has been able to hide it well. He is offered a job to spy on the builders of a new resort on Mourning Island. He in the process is drawn to Marlene, the sister of who he has been hired to spy on. Suddenly there is a murder and Talmon learns that the mob is involved. As the violence grows, Talmon is worried his lie could ruin so much with Marlene and himself. Could Marlene forgive him?
This is my first book by this author and I was not disappointed in anyway and hope to read more from him in the future. This 5 star read I highly recommend and think any crime readers would get lost in this well written book.

This is not my first book by this author and definitely will not be my last. This story definitely did not come off the way I thought it was going to and although I was looking forward to reading it I’m completely satisfied with how it went. I’m actually wondering if there will be more coming in the future for our Talmon and The Mourning Islands, I loved the setting and the whole concept of this book. There was just enough suspense and winding turns to keep me glued to this one till I finished and then of course just sat there with my mind going 100 different directions.

There are so many things I’d love to comment on and am not going to because I will teeter too close to spoiling parts and I can’t do that. I found that I was able to connect to these characters quickly and thought I had it all figured out about ¾’s of the way in but then this author decided to derail everything I had figured out and has left me with wanting more.

Will definitely be watching for more from this author, I enjoyed the first book I read by Mr. Wells but this one is my favorite so far.

Awesome and highly recommend!

The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells was the first I had read by him. But will not be the last. This story drew me in from the beginning and I hated finishing it because I was enjoying it so much.

Talmon is hired to do one job, that is to get information on the Resort being build to report back to the investors. There ends up being so much more to the story and lots of surprises.

I really enjoy suspenseful mysteries, but this one I loved. The characters were great with a lot of depth. I can’t wait to read others by Mr. Wells.

THE MOURNING ISLANDS is one of those books that I went into thinking it was one thing when it was really about something else. Well it was kind of what I thought it would be but so so much more.

This is a multi dimensional story that twists and turns along the way. The characters are well developed, the story is well plotted and it is an enjoyable read.

This is a tale that takes you in ups and downs. There is some romance in it but it’s not the theme for the book. Mystery and intrigue are what fuel this story. Talmon is hired by a couple to spy on their investment. While doing that he meets a load of new people. They are mafia, con men and lovely ladies. The story drew me in and didn’t let go. I was wanting to know what was going to happen. It seemed like there are two different stories to follow along with. I enjoyed the characters and the trouble they got into.

The Mourning Islands is a story full of mystery, murder, suspense, drama, and secrets. I felt like the first half of the book was a slow burn to get to the last part where things start to unravel. This book also doesn’t have an ending that you would expect, but I can’t get into details or it’ll ruin the whole experience for you. There are several layers to the story that have you guessing on whether they are all connected. This book was an interesting read, but definitely not something you want if you are looking for light or feel good entertainment. Could be a good read for a dark and stormy night though ?

The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells was suspenseful, mysterious, and creative. Main character Talmon is hired to keep an eye on someone working on a new resort. Little did he know that his employers have ulterior motives. He is pulled into something he is very unsure of in the process after a mysterious death leads to revealed secrets.

Talmon himself seemed to be an interesting and knowledgeable character. I felt that he had a decent control on his PTSD and I enjoyed the tid bits mentioned of his childhood. The story had a great storyline and every setting was descriptive and engaging. I enjoyed reading this novel and all its characters. Easily a 5-star read.

Could you live with so much danger surrounding you? To always look over your shoulders. Talmon lives a dangerous life when he begins working. There are so many lies and secrets. Will things become clearer as Talmon unravels the past? I really liked Talmons character. He didn’t give much away. He cared deeply for those he brought into his circle. The author surprised me when I started reading this story. I didn’t picture this at all when I read the description. I really enjoyed this book. It could be a really great series of Talmon surviving life. Doing all those odd jobs.

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells was a suspenseful, thrilling read, that had me hooked.

My first read from this author, I went in with an open mine, and man oh man, I’m glad I gave this book a chance. Thick with mystery, twist, turns, and an ending that will have you going.. what!, this book, though low on the page count, packs a mean punch, and one that will leave you wanting more.

Talmon, our MC, was a complex, multi layer character, that brought this story to life. Told in his POV, you get the intimate workings of his mind, and struggles. I felt it, and could also pass this character on the street. That believability, for me, made this story more than just your typical thriller.

Overall this story will keep you on your toes, full of misdirections and compelling characters, it will no doubt get under your skin. So yes, this book gets my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval.

Happy Reading

A great read about mystery. Talmon is a war veteran just looking for a job. When he answers and ad in the paper, he gets more than he bargains for with an investigation into boat owner and resort builder Rusty Wing. Living on the marina, he makes friends with Rusty and is lead on an adventure of twists and turns and dangers. Can he find out the truth before things get too complicated?
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns. Well developed characters like Talmon trying to make something of his life despite his struggles or Rusty as a sophisticated businessman but with his cares and worries underneath. Great cast f supporting characters like the strong and stubborn Marlene or the sweet Claire.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like with its vivid sense of colour bright and bold and wonderful like the pink flamingo under the sun amongst the sand dunes beautifully written in a sense of beauty and wonder. Or the bay with its deep blue waters and white sand for the sense of peace Talmon feels out on the sea. Or the bright colours of the painting and Marlene’s tattoo, both beautiful and sorrowful at the same time wonderfully written.
The first person narrative worked well to display Talmons struggles and his search for answers. The use of suspense was wonderfully done, with details slowly revealed to make you keep reading to find it what happened. Also loved the sense of foreboding from the start making you want to read on to see if something bad does happens. Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.

As he gets further into this lifestyle, he meets characters that are all their own and enticing to him in different ways. The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells is a dark and somewhat sombre story that is full of secrets and lies, murder and danger. The mystery and suspense will have you intrigued and left guessing as to what is coming next. For me the story was a little slow at the start but it does have lots of twists and turns and picks up the further you get into the story. The Mourning Islands By Douglas Wells took me on a journey of secrets, lies, intrigue, suspense, mystery, murder, discovery, romance, violence, and danger. This is the second book that I have read by Mr. Wells, so I am still ‘getting to know him’ but was eager to find out what this story had in store for us.
The plot was very intriguing and suspenseful, as it twisted and turned. I was left guessing as to the outcome, because every time I thought I had it pinned down, BAM- there was a twist I didn’t see coming. The story does have some dark, emotional, and depressing moments which really sets the mood and tone of the whole story. There were lighter moments, and a little romance sprinkled through the story- but overall this is a ‘moody’ read.
Mr. Wells has written a descriptive and detailed, multi-layered storyline, that has several threads running at the same time- and it’s not till towards the end that the threads begin to come together- again, leaving me wondering how things will ‘end’.
When the end did come, I sat looking at my screen, somewhat in shock- “No! It can’t possibly end like that!”, I was thinking to myself! Oh, but it does! My mind is still trying to come to grips with it, and it’s been a couple of days since I closed the book! I can’t go into detail without spoiling it for you, suffice to say that when you read the book you will know exactly what I mean. I really wanted good things for Tamlon- he deserved good things to happen to him!!! Looking at you Mr. Wells…….
If you like a suspenseful mystery, with murder, twists, and a plot you can’t pin down- then this is definitely the book for you!

Thank you, Mr. Wells!

The story The Mourning Islands by Douglas Wells is a thrilling book that I loved reading. It has suspense and mystery. It is a story that had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. I enjoyed reading about that character of Talmon Bonnett. He is a veteran who has taken a job to befriend the man who is responsible for building a new resort on Mourning Island. He is able to hold his own when he needs to and begins his assignment. He can be stubborn. What will Talmon discover? What does the future hold for Talmon? Read this book to find out. There are other characters that I enjoyed reading about. They are all both interesting and intriguing. I enjoyed reading about Marlene. She and Talmon start an affair. She is feisty and one that speaks her mind. Talmon finds himself falling for her. There is also Rusty and Claire. Add in two mobster brothers who are in a dispute and you can’t help feel like you’re on a roller coaster ride that doesn’t end until the final page. I enjoyed that the story is detailed and there are times when I felt like I was right there with the characters seeing what they did. Don’t miss out on a book that is exciting and entertaining to read. Highly recommended.
