I am a sucker for a good werewolf book. This was everything I wanted and more. Not to mention that the main character was HOT. HOT. HOT. The world, the characters, and the plot were all seamlessly put together and it just made it that incredible! I look forward to reading more from this author!

I have been eyeballing this book for awhile as I saw it popping up all over my recommendations. I finally was intrigued enough to fall back down into the werewolf alpha rabbit hole. It’s very easy for me to get sucked into the werewolf genre and I have to force myself to take a break and move on to a new genre. However, this story just sucked me back in and I think this binge is going to be a long one!

What’s not to love about this plot line? A bullied second son, deemed nerdy and insignificant to his pack. Suddenly thrust into a position of power and the great responsibility that comes with it (Yes, I channeled my inner Spider Man spirit for that, thank you Uncle Ben!). Nolen, said second son, is sent away to train while learning how to fulfill his new role. He is determined to gain the respect of his pack and be the protector and provider he knows he can be. His journey along the way brings new people into his life and a new perspective. Of course, old enemies arise and Nolen is forced to put his words into actions. It’s a great journey to follow. I won’t spoil it all but I will tell you, read it now! You won’t regret it!

I love shifter stories and this one was right up my alley. I loved that it was just a bit different than others I have read. It’s a story of the struggle Nolen faces after his brother was killed and he is expected to become the next alpha and find his mate. I fell in love with the main characters and was very glad to see Nolen’s self confidence grow with him. Overall, highly recommend this book!

Nolen is a young man of fifteen, he lives with his family and the rest of his pack, the Rhyolite pack and he is the second son of the Alpha and Luna, he is more than happy to be second in command under his big brother and the rest of the pack is happy with that too, until one day when his brother is killed by a neighbouring pack and Nolen has to step into his bog brothers place as the next Alpha.

Nolen is not happy about this as he does not have the best history with his pack , however, he is sent too another neighbouring pack for training, Nolen is nervous at first, but when he starts to get to know the other pack members, he comes into his own and makes friends. When he finishes his training and returns home for his eighteenth birthday, they are also celebrating his first shift and the finding of his mate, so when he finds her, he is gutted that he can’t tell her because of pack law, but he keeps as close an eye on her as he can.

Fast forward three peaceful and happy years as Alpha of his pack and Nolen is doing really well, however, another pack threatens that peace and in order for him to stop any bloodshed, he challenges that pack’s Alpha and loses. As he struggles to regain his health, Nolen has to find a way to become stronger and take back his pack, but will he be able to gather the strength and support of those he needs to do this and claim his Luna in the process? This is a fantasy romance with aspects of a coming of age tale mixed in where peace and war teeter on a hairs breadth line and love, strength and support are all that hold the balance between the two in this story which will draw you in slowly at first, but then lead you on a wild tale throughout.

The Second Alpha HeirThe Second Alpha Heir by C.L. Ledford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nolen is the second son of the Alpha of their pack, making him mostly unseen. Compared to his perfect brother Archer, Nolen was scrawny and weak. He never had to worry about it though as Archer was the heir to the pack. That is until one day Archer is killed, thrusting Nolen into the spot of heir at the young age of 13.

Nolen was completely unprepared for what was expected of him. Fortunately, there is another heir from a different pack, named Sawyer, undergoing Alpha training to take over his own pack. Nolen’s father decided it was in his best interest to train with Sawyer and his pack until his 18th birthday when Nolen’s wolf is due to show himself.

While Nolen was training with the pack, he met Sawyer’s sister Amora and there is an instant connection between them. She was only 10 years old so he chalked it up to a protective feeling of this little girl.

As time goes on, Nolen gets bigger and stronger and feelings for Amora are even more confusing. There is a lot of will they\won’t they tension once they hit their teen years.

This was a very well written coming of age paranormal book. Nolen has no self esteem even after he gets bigger and more handsome. He has it in his head that he will never be as good as his brother and that no one will accept him as their Alpha. I like how the author delved into those feelings, often making Nolen be more relatable to the reader. Scrawny, timid boy turns into a strong, handsome and more confident man.

The only thing I did not like was the age of Amora when feelings were starting to develop. She was too young in my eyes. I know there isn’t much of an age difference between the two but where the age difference is makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. Having an 11 year old child myself, I didn’t want to think of a girl that age in a love story. But hey, that is just me in denial that my son is growing up.

I love a story where I can root for the underdog and The Second Alpha Heir is that type of story. Nolan was scrawny and bullied by everyone. He was never meant to be the alpha but fate has other plans. Nolan trains to fulfill the role his brother left behind. We get to see the ups and downs of Nolan on his journey. He really is a protagonist worth rooting for. His book has an interesting plot and a nice slow-burn romance. It also has a very creatively built world. I really enjoyed this story.

Wow! What can I say about this totally captivating and entertaining book. Nolen is a wonderful character and right from the very start I was 100% on his side and wanted him to thrive and succeed. He was the second son, bullied by his pack and definitely not seen as a leader in any way. That all changes and he must become the Alpha and lead his pack into the future. He receives very important training from another pack, where he also makes very valuable bonds. Amora the younger sister to his best friend Sawyer becomes extremely important to his and his packs future. All the characters are wonderfully written and the storyline so creative that once you start reading you won’t be able to put it down.

I did not enjoy this book as much as I expected to, however that is mostly my own doing. I didn’t pay enough attention to the categories this book is listed under and missed the fact that it’s a coming-of-age story (and probably could have surmised that from the blurb, but didn’t for some reason). Those are not my usual reads. In addition to that, it’s under a romance category, but it’s definitely more of a love story due to how things play out (which isn’t really clear by reading the book description). I don’t usually read those either. The writing style took a little getting used to as well.

That being said, if coming-of-age and love stories are your thing, you’ll likely enjoy this book very much. I like the overall concept of the book and the author did a great job of creating the characters. The world building was also great. You will experience many different emotions while reading this, and the tension keeps things interesting.

4 out of 5 stars

To say I related to this book is an understatement. The main character, Nolen, went through so much and still persevered. To never feel good enough, to think your mate would have rejected him, and to think he could never be accepted as the pack leader, yet he still went through all the training.

Being a person who was bullied, and never thought I was good enough, this book brought me to tears on multiple occasions. Then in the next chapter I was shouting and dancing and yelling, “Go Nolen!” Very few books make me feel this way, and I was pleasantly surprised that this book got me to this point. The Second Alpha Heir, was an easy and quick read, being only 175 pages, but left you wanting to read just one more chapter before bed. Next thing you know you are finishing the book, it’s 4 am, and you have to get up for work.

If you want a book that takes you on a roller coaster of emotions; happy, sad, angry, and easily relatable main character, this is the book for you. I cannot write enough good things about this book, so thank you C.L. Ledford for writing such a fantastic book!

What pushed me to give 4 out of 5 stars if this book was so good? A couple of things, but I want to point out, that if I could give half stars I would. I definitely would rate this 4.5 instead of 4, but alas here I am only able to give 4 stars.
Reasons for deducting one star are a few minor things that hopefully can help the author grow and keep writing books as amazing as this one! The first reason would be, which was towards the beginning and very minor, was that the female lead character, her actions seemed off for being at age 10. For example, she hid behind her mom’s skirts. If she was 10, how was she that small? I picture “hiding behind her mom’s skirts” would be a little toddler scared of new people, not a 10 year old. Another writing option would be, she was hiding behind her mother’s frame. I feel that type of description might have made more sense. I also felt that some of the scenes were a bit rushed, and could have been described a bit more. Some of the battle scenes, fasting forward to 90 years old, etc. Like I said, very minor things to help with constructive criticism.

I cannot wait for more books to be published by this author!

The Second Alpha Heir by C.L. Ledford

This is the first book I’ve read by the author. The Second Alpha Heir is an amazing read. It will have you crying at the end. Have tissues ready because you will need them.

Nolen is the second born son of the Alpha of his pack. He’s not tall and strong like his brother is and he sure isn’t as popular. When his brother dies he is the one who is next in line for the Alpha. He does meet his mate, but can’t tell her as she isn’t of age. The quote I chose for Nolen is: “You are one amazing person. I could never forget coming to your pack; my life changed so much when I lived there.”

Amora is the daughter of another Alpha and she’s part of the pack that trains Nolen. She has a crush on him and is hurt to know that when he becomes of age he’ll find his mate. When she learns that he’s met his mate she is shocked. The quote I chose for Amora is: “Let’s head down then. The pack is waiting for us.”

Highly recommended for Werewolf Paranormal lovers.

OMG! This book had me in my feelings more than I expected. The story was original with aspects of true blue werewolf culture. I loved the characters. I was drawn towards Nolen, not only because of his heart, but for the ideals he expressed when not feeling like he is good enough. Anyone that has ever felt that way can relate to Nolen. The love and respect Nolen feels for Amora is spectacular. There are so many good things about the way he loves her. I didn’t want this book to end. I wanted it to be left open for a series. My heart was shredded at the end.

The Second Alpha Heir: C.L. Ledford

In The Second Alpha Heir, tragedy strikes the Rhyolite Werewolf Pack, forcing second born Nolan to step up as Alpha of the pack. Nolan finds his true self, which turns out to be entirely opposite of what he was made to believe by other pack members. From making friends, to finding love, to loss, Nolan takes the reader through his life, from being the underdog to the Alpha.
The characters and feelings of The Second Alpha Heir are highly relatable. The main characters go through the confusion of finding who they truly are, finding love, losing love, and happiness. The reader can feel along with the characters. I laughed, cried, and worried along with them. I was a little skeptical at first, but The Second Alpha Heir by far exceeded my expectations. There was not a single moment I did not like.
For fantasy and werewolf lovers, The Second Alpha Heir hits all the spots. The book is full of twists and turns and is highly relatable.

Nolen never planned to be Alpha, he was the brother to the future Alpha and was always in his shadow. Nolen knew he was loved by his parents but he was scrawny, bullied, and never a candidate until the day he was. Now he is the heir of the Ryholite Pack and has to be trained at a fast speed. He will do his duty with honor but the pack who always looked down on him, will they be able to accept him?

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the fact that the author took time to give us an insight into training to be Alpha. There is so much more to this story that happens and I really was pulled in reading about Nolen and how he comes to terms with his future. Would definitely read more by this author.

I love a good werewolf romance but they can get repetitive. Prepare for divergence with this one!!

Nolan the “spare” alpha heir has been bullied his entire life but his entire life changes when Archer his brother is killed and he becomes the next Alpha. He goes away to a neighboring pack to train to become and alpha and for the first time in his life finds friends and excels but still doesn’t believe his pack will accept him as Alpha when he returns.

Without giving away major story lines this book is full of turmoil personal growth slow burn romance action and has a lot of heart. The ending left me in tears… albeit happy tears

Nicely done book!

Totally Brilliant!! I loved this book from beginning to end full of action, love, werewolves, fated mates and moments that left me speechless. The story of what fate has in store when you are only the second son of an Alpha….Nolen was just that. Nolen was small and not as strong as his older brother Archer. When fate had other plans…Nolen is trained to become the new Alpha of the Rhyolite Pack and is determined to make his family and late brother proud. There are definite obstacles that try and hinder Nolen from becoming a successful Alpha….I was rooting for Nolen all the way from the training to his friendship with Sawyer and finding his mate.

What happens when the scrawny bullied son of an alpha suddenly becomes the next future Alpha?

Nolen grew up as the shadow to his older brother Archer. He wasn’t the favorite of his pack yet he knew that someday his brother would make a great Alpha to their pack. That is until fate intervenes with the death of the future alpha by an enemy pack. Now Nolen is the future alpha.

Nolen is determined to make his late brother and pack proud to call him Alpha when the time comes. Sent away to an allied pack to train until just before his 18th birthday so he can return home for his first shift.

The past returns to haunt Nolen again by once more going after his pack. With his parents as prisoners will he be able to save his pack? Claim his Luna? Or will he join his brother in death?

This was an exciting read that is not the run of the mill werewolf tale. The underdog takes the spotlights and as the reader you go through it with him. Wonderful read!

This story was such a good read. I enjoyed it from the very first page up until the last. I have never read a werewolf story before, but I’m glad that this one was my first. I was able to quickly understand the unique terminology and feeling that is unique to stories of this nature.
In the book Nolen loses his older brother and is forced to take on the responsibility of Alpha heir. His story is one that goes through all the emotions from sadness to happiness, from pain to joy, from fear to strength.
I was thoroughly pleased with the pace of the story and the characters. I was initially worried the story would be too graphic or not hold my interest but I was happily mistaken. There is some adult language and an intimate scene, but it is well developed and tasteful. This is a good read not just for werewolf enthusiasts, but also for anyone who is interested in a story about someone who has to endure life’s hardships and overcome them despite the many obstacles that come their way.

If you are into books where the underdog bullied nerd becomes the hero, this is the story for you. The heartbreaks, challenges, and how the character overcomes everything that is thrown his way. I really recommend this story for everyone. The Second Alpha Heir is the debut novel by C.L. Ledford. It is a captivating paranormal romance with werewolves, magic, werewolf law/politics, danger, action, threats, drama, fated mates, chemistry, tension, destiny, friendship, family, self-discovery, spirit, determination, love, and loss. Ms. Ledford proves to be a talented storyteller who weaves a story full of clever and creative touches- spinning a great story with superb world-building and her own original take on vampire lore.
Nolan was such a great character- I found myself connecting with him right from the beginning and was soon completely invested in him and the outcome of his story. With the death of his brother, Nolan’s world turned upside down. He was the second son, not meant to lead their pack. But now, with the death of his brother, responsibility is thrust upon him. He is so young, but duty waits for no one. And so his adventures begins. Add in a ‘fated mates’ component, threats from a rival pack, his parents capture, and the safety of his entire pack at risk- and things get pretty intense.
Looking forward to more from C.L. Ledford…
Happy Reading!

Thank you, C.L. Ledford!

This story keeps you truly hooked.

Being born the second son of the Alpha and Luna of the Rhyolite pack proves to be harder than anyone would expect. Being smaller than others and  second born means Nolen is picked on and bullied, ignored and left out until tragedy finds the pack and he is thrust into the alpha in training role.

Will the pack think more of him when he returns from his years of training, a grown man ready to assume his rightful position?

Nolen has made a family unit out of the alpha family of the Quartzite pack where he was sent for his training: Sawyer alpha in training and his sister Amora. He also finds his wolf years before he should, and this brings a twist to the story and links to the past.

This page turning story takes you through the trials and tribulations as these young wolves mature find and move on with their fated mates.

Have you ever felt like you were only second best? I know I have. Have you ever felt like you were just there and nobody cared a lick for you? I definitely have as well. That’s exactly the feel you get from the main character in this book. The Second Alpha Heir is about Nolen’s triumph and redemption.
Does he succeed?
With many bumps along the way Nolen has always been at the wayside. When his brother is attacked and killed when he’s just entering his teenage years Nolen has no choice but to step up and train. He’s the pack’s next Alpha if he wants to be or not. He’s been bullied and had to live with those who didn’t believe he could succeed.
I relate to Nolen on so many levels. I’m sure anyone who can answer the two questions I posed at the beginning in the way I have will too! The author doesn’t make it easy, my emotions were all over reading this novel. I was hesitant at first, because I know I get emotionally invested, but I’m glad I gave it a chance. I enjoy shifter books and this was no different. I enjoyed it, well not at first but it grew on me. Just know if you are an emotional person going in, the author is going to make you feel. Don’t let that be the reason you stay away. READ IT!

Normally I am NOT a fan of slow burn romances but this one was soooo good. I absolutely adore Nolan. I’m so used to reading about alphas that are badass/self assured (if not cocky) but Nolan was so refreshing with his doubts and insecurities. It really made it easier for me to empathize with his character. Sawyer? Another favorite character! The author really created a world that I could immerse myself into and wished that it was real.
