The Vardoger Boy (Forerunner Series #2) by Jay Veloso Batista

This is another great read by the author. The Vardoger Boy is the second book in the Forerunner Series. We get to see characters from book 1. Highly recommended!

Finn is supposed to go upon a ship. When he does he realizes that the ship is haunted. Can he survive? The quote I chose for Finn is: “No, Raga, I have had enough adventures in the Realm Between. I don’t want any more such adventures, not me….”

Raga is Finn’s friend. He keeps his eye on Finn. He knows Finn better than anyone. The quote I chose for Raga is: “Poor little Finn. His uncle doesn’t know what to do, propping him up and shaking him awake. Look how groggy he is, lost without his hug, his soul dangling there in the river, clinging to the back of the boat. A boat troll, who would have thought the ship held a mast troll this far from the islands? They can be nasty…”

Highly recommended for Historical Fantasy lovers.

I’m definitely hooked on this series. I love Finn. He may be the youngest son but in my opinion the bravest. The second book broke my heart. The family is definitely about to suffer. I just hope they are able to overcome and reunite again. Cub is extremely smart and brave. I’m glad he survived but I’m fearful of what awaits him.

Book Two in the Forerunner Series continues the story of young Finn who we were first introduced to in Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse. Finn is not alone in his journey as his father accompanies him as he learns the true meaning of being a Vardoger. Finn’s mother and siblings also play a very critical part in this story. Young Finn is still trying to grasp being half boy and half witch, and the battle he fought with the witch in his earlier story. Finn soon learns there are plenty of surprises he must face in the Nine Realms and finds he is suddenly faced with going up against another mystical being, the Werebear.

Book two not only follows the story of young Finn as it unfolds but introduces us to several other characters and tells us their individual stories. These stories set us up for the third Book in the Forerunner series which I cannot wait to read next!

Once again, this author did an incredible story. The adventures from the previous book continued on into this book. This story also follows along on how Finn finds himself and becomes into this man he will be. The quests and things that he had to do really were challenging and it was hard to not encourage and cheer on Finn. Once again, an action-packed adventure, betrayal, struggles, emotions, and a little romance thrown in kept me reading this book till there was nothing left to read. the historical fiction and supernatural and Norse twists all into one was just amazing again. can not wait to read the next one.

~ Authentic Historical Viking Fiction~

You will want to read these in order. This sequel is the perfect follow up to “Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse”. Jump into this new read, as Finn dives deeper into his destiny. I am 100% terrible with names, places, and understanding history, so to be able to pick up a book that makes history just a little bit easier to understand is such a savory treat.

The author continues this ride with plenty of character building, world development, and plot twists. It almost feels like we (the readers) are on the same understanding as Finn is, and as he grows with his Clan, we too are getting a better understanding of his mission and just how to get there. There are new characters, folk legends, and quests to be had. I love that being a Viking novel, Jay doesn’t disappoint. Between the blood feuds, revenge, oath making, family ties, and the challenges each character faces, this really isn’t a cookie cutter story.

This adventure is super in-depth, each character’s story can swallow you up whole and spit you out right in the middle of a feud. Will Finn find victory against his rivals, and can he and his clan hold their spot in history? If you are a fan of Vikings, fantasy, YA, dark intrigue, or the like then you definitely will want to check this one out.

This was a fantastic sequel! I liked this one a lot more than the first. Not only did it have more action, but it was emotional (at least to me) as well! The first book I already loved because it was so well written, and while this one doesn’t disappoint in that regard either, this one just had a lot more depth. I highly recommend this series! These books should be read in order, however, this second book had a very in depth summary of the first book so reading the first isn’t strictly required since the author gives you all the background you need for this one.

This book picks up about two weeks after the first one ends. As with the other book, there are multiple stories being told at once. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to keep it all straight but these books are SOOO GOOD!!!
So, Willa is now married but not without some drama on her wedding night. Men come to exact their revenge on Karl but they are not successful. However, it will find the Kara and her family being on the run to save their lives while Karl takes Finn out on the ship with him. Cub goes with this dad to fight against Alfred the Great. Let’s just say that things don’t go as planned for any of these characters! Between the bears, trolls, mermen, wolves, elves….it’s all up in the air as to how things will develop. I suspect things may not be as they immediately seem though either. I have a feeling the author has something up his sleeve for book three!!
While the first book was difficult for me to get into, I’m so thankful I didn’t give up! I’m really enjoying this series to far and look forward to learning more about Finn and his family!

Onto the next! Having read this series without any wait between books is a relish in itself, but the attention to detail and dedication to research while adding a twist on history is another thing entirely. We once again follow the adventures of our beloved characters that leave us wanting more. The precision and tone of the entire piece are beautiful, and the craftsmanship that goes into creating it doesn’t go without notice. The touches of fantasy that litter just adds the perfect amount of twist that draws readers of all genres in.

Truly a good installment into the series that touches on more than just one solid character and helps to give multiple facets to the created world. Overall, a good read. I recommend!

We meet up again with Thorfinn in the second book of The Forerunner Series and this time there is trouble with a capital T. The entire family is at great odds with invading factions, strange occurrences at sea, and fighting at the homestead. We find Finn out to sea with his Uncle Karl, the crew, and a troll that lives on the Verdandi Smiles (his uncle’s ship). He once again can travel between worlds, but this time learns much more about the different worlds that he is a part of. Cub, his brother, and Ange, Finn’s father, are away at war against an enemy and fighting fiercely for their lives. Finn’s mother and the rest of his family who lives at the homestead are being invaded and have gone on the run. Whew, so much going on and no I will not tell you how it ends in this book, but I can say that you are in for a wild ride!
I am absolutely in love with Thorfinn and can really understand and feel his pain and hardships. The characters are so wonderfully developed and created with such feeling and compassion. The descriptions of the people, places, and events really jump off the page, especially in the description of the battle. Not only was I able to see the scene in my head but also able to feel and smell from the great description that was provided. The historical aspects really shine through in this masterpiece, and I cannot wait for the 3rd book in this series. I love reading all the poems and stories as told through Jormander their storyteller. I love the historical references and the ancient lore associated with the people and world of the past. Pick it up and read it!

The Vikings are about to go to war with the Saxons… in a multi pov you learn about Cub and his father against Alfred the Great…. Get a glimpse of domestic life with Kara as she flees her home with her mother and siblings and fulfill your wish for fantasy genre wit .Finn the spirit walker and his latest opponent!

Holy Viking adventure! This book really immerses you in the time period by delving into the surroundings and the way people lived. It was hard to connect to the characters, but I think that is because I did not realize this was a second in series when I picked up, so it was pretty clear that I am missing some background. None the less, the adventure was still easy enough to follow and there was plenty going on in the story to keep you interested. While not my typical read (very much a historical fantasy), I enjoyed the book and will be picking up the first one to see what I missed. Perhaps I will even continue with the series! It is the year 878 and the story of Thorfinn continues as he comes to terms with his forerunner status and everything that goes with it, but it isn’t smooth running, his brothers won’t come near him and rumours are spreading about him, so he goes to sea with his Uncle Karl on his Viking ship. Not everything goes to plan for him and he ;earns that he has to earn his passage on the ship, so he completes a quest for the mast troll when they pull into the last port before heading out to sea, this quest takes him under the estuary waters where he has to face a Kelp man and his nuggles.

Meanwhile, war has broken out with Wessex and the Agneson Clan have been called to march with the Great Viking Horde to face them, so all the able bodied men march towards the midlands and heed the battle cry, this includes Cub as he has now come of age and can join in the menfolk as they uphold their fealty to their Lords.

Back at home, the rest of the women and children of the families are keeping the homesteads running smoothly and awaiting news of their friends and family, while preparing for the seasons and the tasks at hand. For the youths left behind this includes training and chores, that is until one night when the Agneson homestead is attacked in the night, as a blood feud is acted upon through retaliatory action.

As all this happens, other nefarious plans are in the works further North where a werebear plans their revenge against Karl’s crew and the villagers they helped, but they are not alone, a dark elf has joined with them and strengthened their magic and fuelled their desperate thirst for vengeance.

Will the Agneson Clan succeed in their fight against the Danes of Wessex and return home? Can the womenfolk of the clan defend their homestead against the blood feud they are in the middle of? Will Thorfinn succeed in his quest and defeat the Kelp man and his nuggles? Will the clan of were-beasts and their dark elf complete their quest for revenge? This is another epic fantasy adventure in Danish England for the Agneson Clan as they face their trials and tribulations in this tale of magic, blood and family values which will keep you hooked from the start.

This addition of the Agneson Clan adventures doesn’t disappoint! The Vikings are called together to defend their way of life. Agne and his oldest son, Cub, are called to battle and thus leave the family homestead. Gurid is left to defend the homestead with Kara and Sorven in her husband’s absence. Thorfinn has left with his Uncle Karl to fulfill his uncle’s oath to return for his men. As the men prepare for battle, Cub learns the ins and outs of battle. A blood feud comes to the homestead and the family is forced to flee to extended family for protection. Thorfinn finds himself dealing with a mast troll, a kelp man, and a dark elf that feeds the were-bear man his uncle must fight. Can the family survive the many trials before them? Will the Vikings succeed in their push for life to stay the same? Can Gurid get her family to safety before the blood feud catches up to them?

This is an exciting book! I did not want to put it down until I found out how things turned out. So many things are happening all at once that I couldn’t help but be sucked into the year 878 and feel immersed in Danelaw England’s struggles. I really like this series!

Thankfully I read the first book in the series or I feel like I may have been totally lost. The historical descriptions continue to completely immerse you into the scenes and life of the characters. This book has more action and adventure right from the beginning than the previous book. As you more closely follow Cub, Kara, and Finn in their stories, you also can tell there will be more to come as some of the other characters still need closure. This second book does not seem to have as much of the magical elements as the first book and seems to be more involved in the historical aspects. With that said, still a great read!

The Agneson clan faces more challenges than ever in Book 2 of The Forerunner series. A blood feud forces Gurid and her children from their house across the lands to a safe haven. Cub trains on the battlefield for the war against King Alfred’s men. On the high seas Thorfinn the Forerunner faces many creatures of the Nine realms, including the were-beast who’s plotting his revenge, and Karl suspects his nephew might be more than what he seems.
I am going to find the rest of the series ASAP! I absolutely loved this book and felt like I was living through it with them! I started with book 2 in this series and found it pretty easy to be caught up on the plot and the characters which I thoroughly appreciated. The immersive action and lifelike battle sequences had me gripping the book in suspense! I felt emotionally connected to even the most minor characters from the very first line due to Batista’s vivid portrayal of them. This series is the perfect blend of historical, fantasy, and a beautiful mythology that will keep you entangled in the story. I highly recommend The Forerunner Series!

The Vardoger Boy (The Forerunner Saga Book 2) by Jay Veloso Batista . This is not my typical genre but I loved this book. Its a Historical fantasy that once you start reading you won’t want to put it down! Its the story of Cub, Agne and their father as they go to war against Alfred the Great, his brother Fin sails off with his Uncle Karl. The rest of the family is left at home to fight with another clan that is out for blood. This is set during Viking times and the author’s writing is so good that I felt like I was really there. Its the typical war time story where you don’t know who to trust and who is really your friend. there are traumatic life changing events and seeing loved ones killed and betrayed. These children being sent off to war and being sent away to save their lives are children, young children. That’s the time they lived in. Such a good Fantasy book. In the first Forerunner Saga book, we met the Agneson clan. The story mostly followed the main family focusing mainly on Thorfinn the youngest son, and his uncle Karl. In this, Book 2 of the Forerunner Saga, the story switches amongst the family much more evenly as they have gone in several different directions.
Thorfinn has shipped out with his uncle Karl and is learning about the realm between realms from new sources on his adventures. Agne and Cub have joined the call to war from Guthrum and marched off with the clan’s warriors. Leaving Gurid, Yeru, Mae and the rest of the younger children. They are attacked by the surviving Magnussen’s and driven from the homestead.
There is a lot more adventure in this book, and our characters have grown. We see quite a bit more development of the story and characters and I look forward to the next book as this one ends on a bit of a cliff-hanger.

It took me a while to get into this book and every percent was a struggle. This is NOT the book’s fault. I am a mood reader and this was not my mood. The beginning does start off a little foggy; and by foggy I mean that I really didn’t know what was going on. Once you get to Finn’s point of view it starts to pick up and things start to line up a little bit better. I don’t know much Norse mythology or history but the important parts were explained in a well enough way that I was able to keep up. And! Some of the locations from historical shows did ring a bell. This book has a LARGE character list and I had to take side notes to even begin to keep up.
Epic fantasy. Vikings. A beautiful wedding and a pretty epic battle. It starts off a little slow, but keep going and you’ll be swept up in story.

I was looking forward to reading this second book in the series, and I was not disappointed, as the epic adventures of the Agneson Clan continued. Set in Danelaw England, in 878, and the Vikings are at war with the last Saxon Kingdom, and as the Danish forces assemble for war on Wessex, the loyal Agneson Clan heeds the call to join the Great Viking Horde. This entertaining and enjoyable epic saga is a mix of historical fantasy and supernatural suspense, and it had me gripped from start to finish. Forerunner Thorfinn has his own adventures and dangers to overcome, as he learns that the Nine Realms are full of surprising hidden folk, and to earn his place aboard the Viking’s ship he must accept a mast troll’s quest. The Vardoger Boy is the second book in The Forerunner Series. There’s a summary of the previous book at the start, but it is best enjoyed after reading Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse.

This is an exciting story with fantasy elements set in the UK during Viking times. Having lived near York/Jorvik, I enjoyed recognising familiar sites and landmarks! There’s plenty of historical detail and the author really brings the world to life with multisensory descriptions. It really captured my imagination!

I particularly liked the depictions of women. There are shieldmaidens, who are as at home on the battlefield as male warriors. But there are also women who prefer working with needles than swords who prove ready to fight when the need arises. Kara is a wonderful character, and it’s particularly interesting seeing her grow in understanding as she sees a new side of the women in her life.

I would recommend this series to readers who enjoy historical fantasy, especially those interested in Vikings and Norse mythology! It gets five stars from me, and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

The Vardoger Boy is the second book in The Forerunner Series by Jay Veloso Batista. This epic fantasy picks up just after the end of book one and continues all the action and adventure we have come to expect from this dynamic author.
This saga is set in the middle ages, the year is 878, and Thorfinn, Karl, Cub and the rest of their clan are being tested, on many levels. With Vikings, danger, violence, battles, emotion, Norse mythology, curses, history, paranormal/supernatural elements, drama, challenges, mystery, and more…. all made for a very engrossing read.
Jay Veloso Batista has a gift for telling an epic tale and his attention to detail definitely helps to really immerse me in the story. He weaves quite a detailed and descriptive story with clever touches that pulled me into the adventure to experience everything right alongside the characters. I am fully invested in them and the outcome of their saga and thoroughly enjoying it all. This story wouldn’t be the same without these interesting characters, or the fantastic worldbuilding that Jay Veloso Batista has mastered so brilliantly. I am well and truly hooked now and can’t wait to see where we go from here.
Happy Reading!

As original and compelling as its predecessor, the second book in this series does not disappoint! Beginning with a simple recap, this would also be great as a stand-alone read. The protagonist goes from being feared to being accepted by some of his family members. Other characters learn to face their weaknesses, and reach deep inside themselves to overcome obstacles. Set against the rich historical backdrop of the ascension of Alfred the Great, the author continues to entertain and enlighten readers.
