This is the 2nd installment in a magical YA series about a young wizard who helps the witches and causes pandemonium. I really enjoyed this adventure. It’s really outside of my normal genres and it was a fantastic break. It’s a fairly lengthy read; however, it’s so well written that the pages just fly by. I love how invested C.B. Lyall makes the readers in the characters. And I love the way she builds the magical realms…absolutely fantastic. I would highly recommend reading the books in order as they definitely build on one another. Great YA fantasy!

The Veil of Corruption (The Virus of Beauty Book 2) by C.B. Lyall. I have really enjoyed this series even though its not my favorite genre. Its the story of Wilf Gilvary who is teen wizard but wizardry is not his favorite thing. He loves soccer and just being a teen in Hong Kong. He is trying hard to hide his magic from his teammates and trying to keep it in control at other times. He shares a bond of attraction to Katryna who is a young witch but he’s only attracted to her due to their bond. Wilf is also trying to fix The Veil which is going all wonky because of him. On top of all that he’s trying to find Myra his sister who murdered their father. This read is so full of all the things, magic, emotions, murder and fantasy. This is such a fun series so buckle up and start this fun fantasy series!

The Veil of Corruption (The Virus of Beauty #2)The Veil of Corruption by C.B. Lyall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book two in the Virus of Beauty series continues the story from the first book and centers on teen wizard Wilf. In Book One we learned about Wilf who has no interest in magic and all he truly wants to do is play soccer. However, life has other plans for him, and he now finds himself caught in the middle of a long-held dispute between the witches and the wizards. The ongoing dispute has somehow destabilized the Magical Realm and it is up to Wilf to find the antidote for the Virus of Beauty that many of the witches have been plagued with before it is too late.

When Wilf’s stepsister, Myra, disappears it is left up to Wilf to find her and bring her to justice. In his quest to find her the defensive barrier known as the Veil between the witch and wizard cities becomes corrupted and Wilf is blamed. The corruption of the Veil allows the virus to spread and affects both wizards and witches throughout the magical realm. When evil strikes and his witch friend, Katryna, is kidnapped Wilf will do anything to save her even if it means that he risks his own life in doing so. He is the only one that holds the key to saving both his friend and the Magical Realm from certain disaster.

Book Two in the Virus of Beauty Series did not disappoint. The reader is transported to places all over the world as the wizards and witches fight to stabilize the magical realm before it destroys them all. Our teen wizard Wilf has to really step into his role as wizard because this unlikely hero is the only one who can save them. Wilf must put aside his thoughts and feelings on what his perception of a normal life may be and embrace his wizard side while fighting evil head on. Wilf really discovers who he is and what he is capable of as he becomes stronger as both a person and a wizard. It was interesting to read how his relationship with Katryna unfolded and how her family slowly came to terms with it.

This book has everything a YA reader can hope for in one place. Magic, self-discovery, adventure, suspense, unlikely heroes, family drama, young romance, and even some witty banter. It held my attention and kept me reading until the end. The overall most intriguing part of the story for me, since Book One, has been what the witches perceive as beauty in their realm. For them to catch a virus that makes them beautiful by our society standards is horrifying. In their realm ‘beauty’ is defined entirely different and for the witches you are ‘beautiful’ if you have warts, hairy chins, and large noses. It truly goes to show how perception can change everything and what one sees as normal, or beautiful, is not necessarily the same way another person may view it. Fascinating concept! I highly recommend!

The Veil of Corruption
By: C.B. Lyall

This is not the typical book that I read. I do not generally read books about witches and wizards. That being said, I stepped outside of my comfort zone to give this book a try due to the fact that it is YA and I am a teacher who interacts with middle school students. I like reading books that my students might like so that I can recommend good reads to them. This book is one that I will definitely be recommending to my students. This story is very unique and I will say that the storyline kept me reading, because i wanted to know what happened next. I truly enjoyed the characters in the story and really felt invested in the conflict between the witches and wizards. I also liked the twist that the help that Wilf seems to be causing some of the chaos. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes fantasies.

The is the second book in the series and is a brilliant follow up to book one. I would recommend reading these in order as this story follows on from the first. It was so easy to get back straight back into this story and the characters from the moment I started reading. This book has the same unique feel as the first and develops the story so well. I wanted to see what was going to happen and where the story would take us.
I think this author has created a great and interesting YA story. It is appealing to all ages really hits all the right marks. This is only the second book that I have read by this author and yet I think I am already on my way to becoming a firm fan.

This YA fantasy novel is very intriguing to read. You’ve got Wilf, a high school teenage soccer player who wants to deny he’s a wizard, and live his days peacefully in the human world. During his denial, his father passes away, and people start to appear for his help. The info Wilf needs to help with this virus is within the inheritance he received from his father. Before he can do anything, he must accept who he is, and love among them as well in their world. So much other stories are happening as well, and you keep wanting more!

This is the second book in this magical young wizard sequel, and I loved this book as much as the first one. I love how the author makes these stories her own and they are so different than other YA wizard book series. The world building in this series is fantastic and makes me feel as though I am part of it. I love that. The characters are so captivating and as enchanting as the story itself. I could not put this book down. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next books. I highly recommend you share this story with young adult readers that are into the Harry Potter and Shadowspell Academy series. Very enjoyable book and highly recommended that you read.

~ Reluctant Teen Wizard Savior ~

First of all, if you haven’t read the first book in this series, “The Virus of Beauty”, you will definitely want to pick it up!!! C. B. Lyall is such a unique author that tells stories in a way that just sits you right down in the plot and takes you along for the journey. You really feel like you’re in the adventure right along with Wilf, and finding things out as he does. This is the perfect YA for anyone who enjoys Magic, coming of age stories, family drama, or finding identity overtures.

Wilf continues in his quest for the righting the Magical Realm. Unfortunately he will not be able to return to his “Normal” life as he would wish it. As fate would have it, he is pretty important to righting the wrongs and correcting Beauty as the magical world knows it back to their normal state. He is sort of a catalyst if you will for correcting the undoings that are happening in their world. So whether he likes it or not, he has skin in the game. I absolutely love watching Katryna’s story meshing in with Wilf’s, they are absolutely adorable together, and watching her family try to come to understand their dynamic is interesting as well.

The take on the “Virus” gets explored further in the second book, and how that impacts entities (mainly witches) and their magic use. I haven’t ever read something quite like this before, so trying to understand the author’s message to the reader, and how she gets it there through Wilf and other main characters is very gripping. It makes you think in other words. By the end I just can’t quite accept what has happened to Wilf, and I need to keep reading…thankfully the third book is out, which I just can’t wait to read!!!

Thank you to the author for this incredibly fun series, and sharing it with the world. Lovely characters, fully dynamic quests in a very streamlined easy to understand world, and just wonderfully exciting.

This is the second book in The Virus Of Beauty series. I would highly recommend reading the first book as this book follows on from it and you will get a better enjoyment of the story.
This is an action packed YA fantasy adventure. It is very fast paced and is full of magic and danger. The war between witches and wizards is worse than ever and Wilf is being blamed for something he didn’t do. I felt sorry for Wilf. He doesn’t want to be a wizard. He wants to be a normal kid with normal kid problems.
That all changes however when Katryn is kidnapped he now has to embrace his wizard powers if he hopes to get her back.

It is a good fantasy read which is captivating from start to end.

Ahhhhhh! Has anyone read Evil Sushi? That was my favorite read of 2022. It was just so weird and wonderful- I read it in 1 night. This book is absolutely nothing like it (plot and story wise) but it gave me that same feeling that Evil Sushi did! I just could NOT put it down. I loved all the main characters- and it was a joy to tag along on their magical adventures. The central plot with the virus and what not was extremely relatable. This is my first work by the author (how did I skip book 1??) so I’m legitimately about to dash my way to the first book in the series and then sit and pout waiting for more!!

This is one of the most exciting wizardry books I’ve read since Harry Potter. This is Book 2 of the series and Wilf is getting himself involved in some more mystery searching to bring Myra to justice. The adventure involving Katryna and trying to deceive the other witches had me on the edge of my seat. Wilf is a teen just trying to get some answers and justice for his dad. While he’s doing all this, he has normal teen issues going on. He deals with a lot. I root for Wilf because he doesn’t give up. He’s a strong kid (a little hard-headed) and very easy to relate to). I love the story and the characters. It’s suspense, adventure, teen romance, and an exciting series. You must try this story. Better read as a series than a stand alone. I can’t wait to read Book 3.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wilf, our main character is a typical teenaged kid who loves soccer and excels at the sport. His whole life would revolve around soccer had it not been for the fact that he is a wizard who refuses to train or use magic. His father, Reginald, “evaporates” and poor Wilf is now smack dab in the middle of a virus that is turning witches beautiful, and his father’s journal holds the key to save the witches. Wilf is visited in his father’s shop by Ermentrude a witch who demands that Wilf locate and open his father’s secret lab so that she can find what she is looking for. The virus that is infecting witches makes them gradually lose their power until they cannot perform magic, and they become “beautiful.” The wizards were the ones to bring this infection onto the witches and it isn’t until Ermentrude’s daughter Katryna becomes infected, that Wilf understands that he MUST get over fearing magic and using magic in order to unlock the secrets of his father’s journal and save his friend.

All the characters are well-developed, and you can’t help but love each one of them. The story is a definite page turner, and I couldn’t wait to finish the page I was on to be able to turn the page and continue with the journey. It’s interesting that beauty is considered a weakness in the book, and I think that it sends a message that our world needs to hear. Great read and even better cast of characters that takes us into the fantasy world and leaves you begging for more! I cannot wait for book 2! A must read for the ages!

~ Teenage Wizard On the Run~

This is the first book in an exceptional Trilogy about a young Wizard named, Wilf Gilvary, and his world. It’s pretty obvious from the start he wants absolutely nothing to do with magic. The start of the story can be a little rocky to follow. Between the disappearance of his father and transition into the magical world. Nevertheless the story is so intriguing you tend to fly through it!

Poor Wilf is just a kid, and is forced into situations where he has to make some more mature choices. This is a good story for any age, as the content is fairly appropriate. And is very relatable to anyone reading the story as well. As such, the tale is very interesting and advances at a steady and enticing pace.

Eventually, Wilf is faced with a deadly virus that impacts the Wizarding world, and the magical folk in it. Between Wilf’s heritage, and his own innate skill set. It is up to him to make a decision on how to save not just those closest to him, but the entire world with the people in nit as he knows it. Wilf does a pretty solid job of navigating through this new and scary world, that he has been trying to resist from the beginning. There is quite a bit of character development, and I am looking forward to reading the second installment!

This is the first book in this series and i really enjoyed it. The author does an amazing job with the characters and the world building.
I really felt for Wilf’s character. All he wanted was to be a normal boy. He doesn’t want magic and all the complications that come with it, but no matter how reluctant he is he is forced into a world he doesn’t want to be a part of.

There is a struggled for power between the witches and wizards which is released a curse. This curse causes witches to lose there powers and become beautiful.

The only cure is in Wilf’s fathers journal and the only person can unlock the secrets is Wilf himself.
Now he is drawn into a battle he doesn’t want to be part of, and when his friend becomes a victim of the virus he is determined to save her even if that means accepting and embracing his magic.

This story is a real page turner and a great fantasy adventure that I couldn’t put down.

You can’t escape your fate, as unwilling wizard Wilf discovers the hard way, in this well written fantasy novel about wizards and witches and magic. It’s a wonderful coming of age story mixed with magic. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started a book about beauty being a bad thing, and while it is a huge piece of the story, the main focus is Wilf’s journey to discovering who he was meant to be and how he can help support the battle between witches and wizards. The author did a wonderful job of describing the characters and creating a well thought out world. I enjoyed watching Wilf’s and Katryna’s relationship progress and his selflessness to help support her. Wilf’s journey unfolds in an emotional manner while still keeping the pace and action intriguing. The story had multiple twists and turns, and just when I thought I knew how it would end, the story had another curve ball for me. I can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy and see how things end for Wilf.

I can happily say I am more than pleased that the title was not the only interesting attention grabbing aspect of this book. I cannot wait to start the next book in this series.

Everyone always wants to be a witch or wizard with magical powers. Except for our main guy in this tale. Wilf would rather be normal and play soccer over partaking in the magical world he is part of. It isn’t until a magical virus affects his friend Katryna that he has to pick a version of himself; wizard or ordinary. Will accepting his role in the key to the curse be too late? Will his friend survive or be lost to the virus?

What fun! This novel really revolves around the basis that sometimes things aren’t as they seem, and though you feel and believe in one thing, this doesn’t mean that you are right. Nor does it mean you are wrong. Truly, I felt as though the author was trying to nail down the point that you don’t have to let go of your beliefs just to take on part of someone or something else’s. You just need to believe in yourself and what you have within you to take on the world. At least, that’s this readers take.

Ultimately, I really did enjoy the authors writing style, the descriptive way it was presented as well as our main character, Wilf and those that he comes into contact with shortly after a devastating loss. For so long he felt stuck under the feet of family members, and all of a sudden, he isn’t so much anymore. But that’s when things start to really get interesting. Honestly, I read this novel fairly quickly, and I really want to reread it again and take my time to fully immerse myself. Potentially will be back to right a more in depth review but very much look forward to more of this series and author’s work! On my To Read list for sure!

Wilf Gilvary is a young man living in Hong Kong and is obsessed by soccer, but his family, not so much, they would much rather he focuses on his magic, but that is the last thing he wants. It is something he argues with his father about a lot and the more his father pushes him, the more he pushes back, one day in particular they have a huge argument while Wilf is looking for something, especially since while he is sneaking around looking for it, the Mages Crystal which has been in his family for generations shatters.

Later on that morning, while he is at soccer practice, his father mysteriously dies and leaves his magical heritage to Wilf, he now has a decision to make, meanwhile in the magical world there is a political battle raging between the witches and wizards and this has led to a mysterious virus attacking the population. This virus is causing both witches and wizards alike to change, it is also causing them to lose their magic as the virus progresses, the main symptom is a change in appearance, instead of the ugliness this community prizes, the victims are becoming beautiful as well.

As Wilf speaks to one of the witches about his fathers journal, he realises that it holds the key to curing this virus, but it turns out that his father has spelled it so that the only way it can be read is for Wilf to develop his magical skills. This becomes even more stressful for Wilf when the one friend he has made since moving to the magical community is infected by the virus and he knows the only way to help is to embrace his magic and carry out his fathers wishes, but can he do it in time? This is a magical adventure filled with political intrigue, as well as emotional ups and downs as a young man comes to term with his future and the changes he needs to make. It is a gripping tale which will keep you reading as you become invested in the story and the characters within it.

The Virus of Beauty (The Virus of Beauty Book 1) by C.B. Lyall. This is such a good young adult fantasy read. Its the story of Wilf Gilvary who has magic abilities but is terrified to use it. He is afraid that if he uses it and something goes wrong it could really hurt someone. He likes to pretend he is just a normal boy. There is a terrible virus going around among the witches and once his friend catches it he realizes he has to do something. Wilf’s dad has died suddenly and he finds himself in the midst of a battle between the witches and wizards. He doesn’t realize but he may be the only one with magic strong enough to stop the battle. Wilf has to overcome his fear of his magic in order to save his friend and all the witches. There are battles upon battles that will keep you flipping pages late in the night. Even though this was a young adult read I really enjoyed it. Read The Virus of Beauty to see if Wilf overcomes his fear of his magic to save his friends!
