Diamonds & Deception (Karina Cardinal Mystery #3) by Ellen Butler

Butler has done it again. Karina is at it again in this new book and Butler has rightfully outdone herself. This is a fantastic book and I can’t wait for the next.

Karina, Rina, or K.C., is at it again with the trouble. She is following her sister down the rabbit hole, but it’s her sister. Things aren’t as they seem and Karina gets in trouble again. The quote I chose for Karina is: “No, don’t ‘Karina’ me. Listen, it’s not like I plan to be part of the raid. I’ll wait in the car. But I am coming with you. And if you do find her, I want to be there. I need to be there.”

Mike, FBI boyfriend, is once again out of town. When he gets another frantic call from Karina. This time he knows what’s going on and can’t be mad. The quote I chose for Mike is: “I can’t leave you alone for a second, can I? Between you and your sister, you’ve got disaster written all over.”

Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good crime and romance. Ellen is fantastic.

Drifting, Falling: Diary of a Call Girl Suicide by A.J. Ullman – Review by Kerry Baker

Drifting, Falling -- Diary of a Call Girl SuicideDrifting, Falling — Diary of a Call Girl Suicide by A.J. Ullman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Drifting Falling: Dairy of a Call Girl Suicide by AJ Ullman is a deep and thought provoking story that follows a young girl on a difficult and emotional journey. She has been through so much in her life and you could really feel that fight in her that is what got her through the things she had experience. While you might not be able to relate to the exact thing she has been through it was so easy to connect with Ripley. I felt the emotions and her pain on each page of the book which really added so much more to the story.
This is the kind of book that leaves you thinking about it well after it has ended. I thought that I was a powerful story and on that everyone should read.

DEADLY WEAPON (Jake Wolfe Book 5) by Mark Nolan

5 Stars

Well there goes that relaxing fishing trip… One phone call and those infamous “Can I count on you?” words take Jake and Cody from a relaxing Alaskan fishing trip to a race to save the world.

This one hit close to home, with all going on in our world today there were more than a few times I sat thinking about things I had just read. The action and suspense was vintage Mark Nolan, I love this series. The progression of these characters, even the secondary has been amazing to watch. I was worried about Jake and Sarah as they have been written to this point but there’s always hope and this installment gave that to me. Cody is with no doubt one of my favorite characters ever. Every time I pick a book up in this series I pray because God forbid anything happens to our Cody!

You can absolutely read this as a stand alone but don’t. You really get to know these characters by reading the books before and why not? It is an amazing series and this author hits each one out of the ballpark. I read this in one sitting because putting it down was impossible!

So excited when I saw there’s another coming…I can not wait!!

AMAZING!!

Rose by Any Other Name (The Sisters, Texas #10)Rose by Any Other Name by Becki Willis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4 ½ Stars

A Rose By Any Other Name is Book #10 in The Sister, Texas Mystery series by Becki Willis. This is another wonderful cosy mystery to add to the already fantastic series- but you don’t have to read the whole series in order to appreciate this book, as it can easily be read as a standalone.
The story is a tightly woven and very intriguing cozy murder mystery, with a wonderful cast of characters, crime, investigation, drama, suspense, and more.
Things heat up when a mysterious newcomer arrives in town, who soon gets tongues wagging, but not in the way you might imagine. But in a “is that a body?” kind of way. Then Maddy makes a disturbing discovery- and the mystery begins.
Really well written, with all the ingredients you expect from a great mystery. I am really enjoying exploring this superb series!

Thank you, Becki Willis!

Why can’t I, just DIE in peace? Why do I roam, unable to rest? Will I ever know the truth, the ugly truth of who shot me in the back? I hear voices, but no answers. Why do they tell me that some racist white cop, who watched his partner kill a defenseless Black kid, is the only one who can help me, the only one who can set me free. Now I hear voices telling me that I must look back to find the truth. I see her standing over me as the life ebbs out of me, and I wonder, did she do it?

“Clive…Oh, Clive, baby…Oh God I’m so…” She leaned over me. The blood from my shirt soaked her skin, turning it a brownish red. As I looked in her eyes, I could feel her tears, touching my face, as her soft hands used to. Then I realized that I couldn’t really feel anything. Because I was dead.

I looked down at me, lying there motionless, and I saw her sobbing over me. Shaking me, trying to will me back to life. But I knew it was too late. I felt this detachment, but at the same time an inexplicable heaviness. Something was pulling me back toward my body, which I didn’t really even feel was mine anymore. Something wasn’t letting me leave. Suddenly, the room was light, brighter than I’ve ever seen it. I couldn’t see her, or me. Just this blinding light. Whispers from eternity called me, telling me that I had to find out. I had to make peace for peace to come to me.

A DEAD MAN SPEAKS is a suspense filled thriller set against the ruthless world of black Wall Street in 1987. It’s the story of Clive January, a Black investment banker, a driven self-made man, who had it all—money, success and power, until he is shot from behind and killed. He can’t rest until he finds out who did it, and his ghost works with Detective Bob, a white cop, who can get in the head of victims and crack the cases that no one else can. That is until now– hated and ostracized by the other cops for ratting on his partner who viciously murdered a Black teen—Detective Bob hasn’t been able to solve a case since then, and this is his last chance to prove he’s still got it. Through dreams and visions, Clive bares his life to Detective Bob until the truth is revealed in a wrenching ending that neither ever suspected. A DEAD MAN SPEAKS is ultimately about the redemptive power of love and forgiveness.

Solstice Shadows: A VanOps Thriller by Avanti Centrae – Review by Anantha Rusum

Solstice Shadows (VanOps, #2)Solstice Shadows by Avanti Centrae
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is one action packed read, I had a feeling that I was actually seated in a rollercoaster. It starts with a bang and then the action continues non stop till the very end.
I had not read book 1, so there are some elements which I could not appreciate much for lack of prior background knowledge but nevertheless the book is still a standalone enjoyable read.
Maggie, an Aikido black belt teacher is forced to join hands with VanOps, a US Government agency involved in saving the world, because an ancient important artifact is stolen from her. There is an attack planned on the United States and the source of this attack is a super power which is charged by a meteorite to cause mayhem in the world. Now it is up to VanOps to save the world.
The action moves across multiple places in the world and it appears as if we are hopping from one place to another at a very fast pace. If you like movies like Indiana Jones, The Bourne series and Mission Impossible with lot of action, mystery and a thriller element to it, this book is for you.
I had a great time. I am thinking of grabbing book 1 and reading it too!

The fifth book in the Jake Wolfe series and I am still really enjoying reading them. I find myself easily captivated and engrossed in what I am reading from the very beginning until the end. It’s nice to step out your reading comfort zone sometimes which I did with this series and I have definitely found some new books and characters to love. I really like Jake’s character; he is really fun to read about. I loved the twists and turns in this new instalment – they certainly kept me on the edge of my seat on more than one occasion. I think the story is probably quite relevant with everything happening in the world at the moment so definitely made it more interesting to read! As always I look forward to reading more from this author again in the future!

I loved reading the book Devil’s Claw (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 3) by Valerie Davisson. It is a story that once I started, I couldn’t put it down until the final page. It is a book that includes mystery and danger. I have enjoyed reading the first two books in the series and I found this one to be just as amazing. The author does a wonderful job of weaving a tale that had me turning pages wondering what will happen next. This story revolves around the disputed property of Lot 429. Some want the property for selfish reasons. How far with they go to possess it? Read this book to find out. I loved that this story includes a new Sea Otter Center. When reading about the center and the orphaned sea otter that is where my heart just melted. I love the character of Logan. She is intelligent, strong, and independent. She has a fierce determination as well as a true and kind heart. I also enjoyed reading about Amy, Logan’s daughter, and the part that she plays in this story. This book has heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. There are also moments of suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. Other additional characters play their part and it is wonderful that some of those from the first two books make their appearance again in this one. Don’t miss out on a story that is exciting, mysterious, and entertaining. I would recommend reading it.

I loved reading the book Deadly Weapon (Jake Wolfe Book 5) by Mark Nolan. It is a story that from the beginning takes you on a non-stop, action-packed ride that is not over until the final page. It pulled me in, and I didn’t want to put it down. This is a series that I have loved reading since the first book. Jake Wolfe is back and what an adventure waits for him. He is helping to uncover and stop a conspiracy. Will he be able to stop those who have deadly and evil plans? Read this book to find out. This is a story that has action, danger, mystery, suspense, and even a bit of romance. Jake is a character who is intelligent, resourceful, and when sent on a mission has a fierce determination to finish the job. There are moments when I had to remind myself to breathe. The author does an amazing job of making both the storyline and the characters come alive. This story does have additional characters, many of whom know Jake or have heard about him. The story Remember My Name (Remember My Name Series Book 1) by Laurencia Hoffman is a Romantic Suspense book. It is a story that had me hooked from the very beginning. The main characters in the story are Shane Coulter and Callan Reid. Shane is a character that I could empathize with. He hides his true self and the darkness by pushing everyone that he loves and that loves him away. He is in such pain that it hurt my heart to read about how he sees and feels about himself. Callan is a man that wants to help Shane and refuses to leave even when Shane tells him to go. He is a kind soul who doesn’t understand why Shane acts the way that he does. This is an emotional story and I found my emotions going up and down the enter time I was reading it. The book has heartbreaking moments. It also gives you a front seat view of Shane’s behavior and how he feels about himself. Don’t miss out on a story that includes romance, suspense, and mysterious happenings. I would highly recommend reading it.

Remember My Name (Remember My Name Series Book 1) by Laurencia Hoffman – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Remember My NameRemember My Name by Laurencia Hoffman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a MM romance and thriller, and I found Shane and Callan to be strong characters that really held the story together. Shane Coulter is hiding some dark and twisted secrets and the only person who ever saw beyond his smart mouth and abrasive attitude to the vulnerability beneath was Callan Reid, his first love. Callan is convinced that Shane’s tough image is just that, and believing that he has suffered badly in his past Callan wants to uncover the truth. However Shane would rather the past stayed in the past and that his secrets remain secrets. In digging up Shane’s past Callan unwittingly brings danger into both their lives as there are people who are willing to kill to prevent Shane’s truths coming out.
This was a story about secrets and how the past affects the present and future, but it was also about first love. Shane and Callan were great characters as they were likeable and relatable but also realistic with their flaws. The storyline flowed well and the plot had enough drama and twists in it that it kept me gripped from beginning to end. The author really made me feel immersed in Shane and Callan’s story and I found myself thinking about the characters long after I had finished the book.

This is a new to me author but the moment I saw the cover I knew I had to see what the story was that laid behind it. Rose by Any Other Name is the tenth book in The Sisters, Texas Series, but honestly I was able to read it as a stand alone just fine. I can tell this may be one to go back and see what the previous books are all about though after finishing this one. This is one of those feel good reads with having some mystery and intrigue binding it all together reads that I just couldn’t put down. The mystery busting the girls in this novel is someone has put a dead body in Granny Bert’s fridge, but who did it and why is the real conundrum. The rest is for you to read and see how things play out, but I can assure you this is one the mystery reader won’t wanna miss out on.

I have never read anything from Avanti Centrae prior to Solstice Shadows but I will definitely be back for more now! This book is one wild and adventurous ride the entire read. I love how this combines the thriller aspect with the adventure and sci-fi with a splash of romance to keep everyone interested at all times. This book certainly had my attention from page one and I read it well into the evening to finish it in one fell swoop. I just had to know how the characters would end up in the end and if there was going to be more soon on the horizon. I am excited to go back and read book one now of the VanOps thriller series. I can only imagine the adventure waiting there.

We meet Maggie, an Aikido black belt teacher as she discovers that someone has broken into her place and stolen a very important artifact. She is also in danger and things only speed up from there. She has to join forces with VanOps to help her retrieve the stolen item and ultimately end up saving the world. It is a lot of story but so worth the investment and I can’t say enough good about the world building we get in here too. You will feel as if you are right there with Maggie and the team as they traverse each adventurous task they find themselves in. Grab a copy today, you won’t be disappointed you did.

This is the second book in this series. Best to read the first one as this is a continuation from that. You have art with the first book and a political type mystery with this book. Karina ends up being a person of interest when a senator ends up dead while talking to her. Karina starts her own investigation into what’s going on with what happened with the senator. The political side wasn’t bad even though it didn’t hold my interest As Much. Book had plenty of action, suspense, and drama to keep my interest. Fast-paced and easy to read. Rose by Any Other Name by Becki Willis is the tenth book in The Sisters, Texas Mystery series. This book can be read as a stand-alone.
As the first book I have read by this author it definitely gave me a great introduction to her work. The book was intriguing and entertaining in equal measure. It was really easy to understand, despite me having not read any of the previous books in the series. I thought the whole book was well paced and competently constructed.
The characters worked well together – clearly the result of having been built up over many books. I enjoyed reading about them and can easily see how you would build up a sort of relationship with them if you have been reading from the start.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will certainly look to read the rest of the series.

Fatal Legislation: A Novel: Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 2 by Ellen Butler – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Fatal Legislation (Karina Cardinal Mystery #2)Fatal Legislation by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I found this novel by Ellen Butler to be a gripping political mystery thriller and it is Karina Cardinal’s second adventure. Although book two in a series it can be read as a standalone story. Having read book one and already been introduced to Karina, I was looking forward to this second instalment and was not disappointed. The plot is complex and fast paced and had me hooked from page one. When Senator Harper literally drops dead at Karina’s feet she becomes a ‘person of interest’, due to the fact that the Capitol Hill lobbyist was having a heated discussion with him after he had torpedoed her latest health care legislation initiative. When it’s discovered that the Senator was actually assassinated by a hacker disabling his pacemaker, FBI cybercrime’s expert and Karina’s boyfriend Mike Finnegan is reassigned to work a new case. Fearing that she will become a suspect Karina begins her own investigation into who would want the Senator dead. Karina ends up in the dangerous world of money and politics, and soon finds herself in the real killers sights.
The main character, Karina Cardinal, really brings the story to life as she is a very relatable and likeable person and I felt fully immersed in the story alongside her. The storyline has enough twists and turns in it so that it kept me guessing until the last page. I couldn’t put this book down and I hope there will be further books in this series.

Rose by Any Other Name (The Sisters, Texas #10)Rose by Any Other Name by Becki Willis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the 10th book in the sister series. This is a fantastic suspense story. Maddy and the gang have yet another mysterious to solve. It like a real version of scooby-doo. A mysterious strange moves to this town and a dead body. Where has this came from. Who dunnit?. So many twist and unexpected turns. It’s a very colourful book.
