Detective James Sheldon is devastated when he loses his family in a hit-and-run. A year and a half later he finds himself living on the street begging for money. He has all but given up on life when he happens to win the lottery. James has hit the big time but rather than make his life easier he becomes a target of dangerous people. His past is starting to catch up with him and it’s going to take everything he has to survive. I enjoyed this book and characters both good and bad. At first I was a bit daunted by the many chapters and afraid the book would drag on. However once I started reading and got drawn into the story that quickly changed. I am glad to have found a new series to get into and I am eager to start book two.

Mr Lucky (Trentbridge Tales #1) is the first in the series by Lee Wood. It has many POVs that it shifts with throughout but mainly follows James Sheldon and David Rex. I normally love the multiple POV but this one seemed like it had too many. It was very slow going for the first half of the book, minus the first chapter. The first chapter has a mafia style hit that I am honestly not sure ever really played into the rest of the book… the last quarter of the book the urgency increased and I actually enjoyed it at that point.

Lee Wood in his About The Author states he writes that his books will “take you on a rollarcoaster ride”, and I couldn’t have said it better myself! This truly was a ride, full of twists, heartbreaking moments, and many turns! This is the first I’ve read from this author and I genuinely can’t wait to get my hands on Lucky Break!

James Sheldon was on his way of getting promoted at his job as a detective. He was about to start a new case when the worst happened. James’ family was killed in a hit and run. He ends up spiralling and drinking his life away. He loses his job, his house, and most of his belongings. He turns to life in the streets. All that is about to change when he decides to buy a lotto ticket and wins.
Meanwhile Dave Rex, is a crime boss. Starting with drugs and then getting in the property game, he has money galore. He worked hard for his money and will not let anyone get in the way of his plans. Dave decides to buy a lotto ticket. On his way out of the store, he collides with a homeless man. Once Dave checks the numbers, he realizes that he should have won but instead the homeless man had the winning ticket. Livid, Dave decides to try to take down James and get his money back.
James wants to do good with his winnings. Being homeless really opened his eyes to the troubles some people have. He wants to start a charity where they will provide cheaper rent for those in need. He wants to put a bet on a place that has potential. Unfortunately, Dave has already put a bet in for this place as well. When he finds out that James is about to take something else away from him, he doesn’t care how but he will take James out of the game.
This book was really hard to get into at first. The author introduced too many people all back to back in my opinion. Plus it was very slow paced before anything of note happened. It went into too much backstory from a lot of characters. About halfway through the book is when James wins the lotto and things start to kick off. After that point, I started getting into the plot. James was a caring man who just needed a helping hand after his life fell apart and he never forgot those who were there for him. Dave was a bad, bad man. Full of anger and no empathy is a dangerous mix. Although he has never murdered anyone himself, he has called in some hits. Midnight Falls by John Evans is an incredibly detailed page turner. The descriptions and imagery are out of this world without being excessive. This was a perfect book to get your pulse racing and keep you on the edge of your seat, from start to finish, epilogue included. I really enjoyed the flow and strong writing but my favorite part is the author’s note and the bonus content at the end of the kindle version. I would certainly read more from this author in the future.

Life is chaotic and nobody said life is easy. Detective James Sheldon life is a roller coaster. This book definitely shows you against all odds if there is a will there is a way. I highly recommend reading this book. I can’t wait to read more.

Midnight Falls was the perfect prelude into spooky season. We meet our main character, Josh, at the end of the story as he sets up the tale for us. There are creatures unknown and secrets in a small town. As we reach the climax, your heart rate is definitely running rampant. The writing gives off Grady Hendrix vibes in a wonderful way. If you aren’t a big horror reader, this is a great introduction.

While I enjoy reading thrillers from time to time I mostly find them pretty predictable and I’ve never read a British Crime Thriller at all. I was pleasantly surprised by Mr. Lucky, which happens to be Book 1 in The Trentbridge Tales, it jumped right into an intense scene from the beginning, and kept me engaged throughout. Mr.Lucky was told through multiple view points that takes a little while to sort out, but it does all come together.

This is the second book in The Discoveries of Julia Xero series. I didn’t read the first book first but this was still easy to follow. I don’t think you have to read them in order but I do recommend reading the first book as it’s a great story.
This takes place right after the first book, and has Julia dealing with the aftermath of Jake’s death and the assignation attempts on her life. You find out more about her past and her connection to the Secret Humankind.
This is well written and keeps you engaged. It has great storyline with wonderful characters and a lot of action. I really liked the writing style and it makes it an easy read. I hope there will be more stories of Julia and her friends.

I read a lot of fiction, but don’t typically choose science fiction. I have read both of the Julia Xero books that are currently published and have really enjoyed both of them. Gloria Oliver does a good job creating a science-fiction world embedded in “the real world” and characters you feel connected to. Book 2 picks up right where book 1 ended (I only minorly regret not having re-read book 1 before picking up book 2, the gap of time had some of the details a little bit fuzzy) but I love when books continue on as if you haven’t missed a beat. Definitely looking forward to book 3!

Mr Lucky (Trentbridge Tales Book 1) by Lee Wood. This book was so good. Its the story of Detective James Sheridan who was down on his luck, he’s lost his job, his family and his friends when one of the only friends he has left talks him into going to buy a lottery ticket. James really thought twice about it because he could have bought a burger with that money. When he decides to check him numbers and discovers he has won the largest lottery ever, 168 million, he’s in shock. Once he wins all this money you would think that his life would turn all around and be living high on the hog but the opposite happens. He has all kinds of people out to get him and saying he owes them for all kinds of things. Some have even threatened his life. Will he be able to survive this wild turn of events in his life? Read this fast paced book to find out!

Luckily Xero is saved by her boss and her boss defends Xero. Then they put Xero’s boss in charge of Xero. Way sooner than anyone anticipates they try to kill Xero and are unsuccessful. Overall I enjoyed this fast quick paced book. I recommend it.

Mr. Lucky is the first crime thriller in the Trentbridge Tales. The story has many characters, but it mainly revolves around Detective James Sheldon. Early in the introduction of the characters, you find out that James loses his family to an accident. This event sends him into a downhill spiral finding himself homeless. He gets “lucky” and ends up winning the lottery. However, this is a blessing and a curse you will come to find out. In winning the lottery, all eyes are now on him and not the good way. He starts to get wrapped up in pretty bad situations with criminals, drug dealers, etc. Being a former detective, this does not look well for him. He ends up trying to get himself out of many bad situations while also dealing with his past. Will he have enough luck on his side to come out on a good end of the situations he finds himself in? This book started slow and confusing for me. The beginning is a bunch of stories introducing the characters, but it is hard to catch on to what the point is until you are about 30% into the book. Once that was over, the writing and the story did get better. There were many ups and downs, twists, and turns. If you like crime stories you will probably enjoy this. This is a British crime story, so that may be why I didn’t click with it as much as I wanted to, but it was suspenseful.

Mr Lucky is book one in the gripping British crime thriller of the Trentbridge Tales series. This is an exciting psychological crime thriller with lots of twists and turns. I appreciate the mail the author includes in the beginning of the novel. Many times the reader tries to imagine the location and layout the characters are engaging in the story. There are British English words that I needed to look up while reading but I feel that it’s added to the plot. The story is original, intriguing, and full of suspense. You don’t want to stop reading it until the end!

This was one of the most intense books I have read in quite a while. It had me on the edge of my seat and cringing in bed at night, I had no clue what could happen next. The setting primarily takes place in one of those spooky old towns where everyone knows everyone else, and if you are an outsider, you are not welcome. The neighbors are all real creepy like they are all out to drive out any who are not a part of some big secret that only those from town know. The things that happened to our main character, Josh, had me looking over my shoulder at night, I was so jumpy at every little noise. I love finding a book that can have such an intense powerful reading experience. John Evans did an amazing job in writing Midnight Falls; I must say I cannot wait to read more of his books. I hope if you are into intense thrillers or horrors then you will give this book a read, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you do. This is the 2nd book in The Discoveries of Julia Xero. I was definitely recommend reading these books in order as they follow on from each other and you need to read the first book to understand the position we find Julia is in now. This is an urban fantasy thriller. There is so many elements to this story that the author has done an incredible job of making them all work together in a way that makes it enjoyable and gripping to read without getting confusing. This story is full of action, danger, threats, secret plots to stop humankind reproducing and threats to Julia’s very existence.
We are back with Julia and her friends. After learning some many secrets about her parentage and who she actually is there is now a target on her back by the council of purpose. They think she is an abomination and are undecided weather she deserves to live or not. However with more urgent matters she is released into her bosses care until they can make a decision. However Julia’s life doesn’t go back to normal. With members of the Council already wanting her gone and someone else wanting her to not exist anymore the attempts on her life make things dangerous not just for her but for everyone around her. As Julia trys to survive and protect her friends they are also still trying to investigate and stop a plot to stop the human race from reproducing but each step they get to uncovering who is behind it the more dangerous things become for everyone involved. Will Julia be able to uncover who is behind the plot? Will she be able to uncover who is actually making the attempts to get rid of her? Is it members of the council or another unknown person? And can she keep herself save and all the people around her?
I honestly couldn’t put this book down. Every time you get a feeling that things are calming down something else happens which throws Julia in turmoil again. However what I do love about Julia’s character is she will not give up, she won’t hide and she is prepared to fight for her life, everyone around her and to stop the evil plot against humankind. I can’t wait to read more in this series.

Mr.Lucky is the first book and start to the Trentbridge Tales series. When James, a former detective finds himself at rock bottom, he decides to try his luck with a lottery ticket. He has lost his family and everything he cherishes and can not even afford to feed himself, so what does he have to lose? To his astonishment, he wins big; now all of his problems are solved, right? Not so much. Now he has some rather unpleasant people tracking him down and finding himself battling the underbelly of society, and his own demons. This was the first book by Lee Wood that I have read and it kept me guessing. This story is written in multiple POVs and has enough excitement, drama, danger, and psychological battle to make you love the writing. I am happy to continue on to the next book and see if the story continues and where the path leads.

The Secret Aftermath (The Discoveries of Julia Xero Series) by Gloria Oliver. This is another wonderful Sci Fi, Fantasy, Thriller that picks up right after Jake’s death and the fallout from that. She realizes that she is still a threat to many and that they will do whatever they need to do to get rid of her. The threats are so dangerous now that its even putting her friends and family in danger. As she learns more and more about her background the more dangerous she becomes to others. There is also a slow burn romance in the background to keep you flipping the pages. This book has you flipping pages so fast you can barely keep up. Julia is a great character and I love getting to know more about her in each book. I can’t wait to read this next one. I highly recommend reading the first book because this book picks up right after that one. Such a good young adult fantasy!

This is the second book of The Discoveries of Julia Xero Series, the first one being The Secret Humankind. I have yet to read the first one but this cover caught my eye and I had to give it a go. After reading I definitely went back to read the first one to get a better understanding of what was happening. This story did not disappoint, with it having action, adventure, mystery, fantasy and so much more. Oliver’s writing is clear and engaging, effectively blending fiction elements with a gripping mystery. The pacing keeps readers hooked from the beginning with suspense that will keep readers on their toes. The author has built a vivid, well-constructed world, I can’t get enough of. I can’t wait to read the 3rd book of the series.

What a start to this series from author Lee Wood! James Sheldon had it all. A successful career and a beautiful family. One day his world is shattered. He ends up homeless and living on the streets. His life is changed 18 months later when he wins the lottery. In the blink of an eye he’s thrown into a world of crime bosses and dangerous criminals. Will he be able to survive and follow through with his plans to help hundreds of families? I enjoyed this first book of the series. I found the first few chapters a bit choppy and it hard to follow how they fit in the book. Once they got to James’ story, it started to fit and make sense. From there it was easy to follow even with all the twists and turns. This book was truly good versus evil! And what I thought was a good dose of karma. I can’t wait to start reading the rest of the series!

I have never read any of Lee Wood’s books and was quite surprised at this one. I started hesitant because there are several characters introduced at once and you start a little unsure of what is happening. That changes quickly once the pieces of everyone’s lives start to run together. I love how this book is written, it makes you really think while you’re reading about how it is all connected. It’s a sad story that ends in an uplifting way and shows that you truly never know how each our lives can change or connect at any given moment. I highly recommend and I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. I’m not so much a “Urban Fantasy Thriller” reader and found myself unable to put this book down. This is the second book of this series and I would call it a must read! I definitely need more of this story. Especially with how this book left me hanging off the edge of my seat. If you like reading about underground streets, Human vs Non-human, portals, appearance changes, “life energies” this book is for you!

Mr Lucky is told from various characters viewpoints and can be confusing at the beginning until you work out who fits where. The threads all come together with a bang and everything makes sense in the end. It is a fast paced story featuring James Sheldon, a hard working police officer who has a great life with young family and wife he adores. When tragedy strikes he loses everything and finds himself lost in the bottle and homeless. A chance encounter brings salvation and the opportunity to help others, but also brings him into the firing line of Dave Rex. Dave Rex starts as a small time criminal but transitions into a big player in the London drug supply chain. He has big plans that are thwarted by an accidental encounter with James, leading to retribution plans. This was a very satisfying thriller and I look forward to reading more in the series.
