This book was alright. I definitely enjoyed reading books by this author in the past, and Trapping the Butterfly wasn’t one of my favorites. I would rate it a solid 3.75 out of 5. But I didn’t hate it. It’s an interesting story idea. I like period romances, 1920s. I’ve always enjoyed mob ties, the Chicago outfit of Italian Mob in the 1920s. An innocent girl getting caught up in something over her head craving freedom. Those 3 pieces put together make an intriguing story. I just didn’t love how it ended up. Bethany craves freedom and her inheritance is about to turn 18. Making her an adult, right? Well yeah but one that lacks any life experience since she’s been sheltered. In comes Paul – a cop. Mr. Rivalde the man her uncle & aunt want her to marry. Finally Rocco, one of Capone’s men. What will she do? Who does she want? Her navigation through the web she’s been caught in due to her need for freedom, is what plays out. I do really enjoy this author. Just because it wasn’t my favorite book by her, what I laid out will intrigue anyone who loves this genre. Give it a chance. It just might be the diamond in the rough you’re looking for.

I have enjoyed all of the books I’ve read by Debra Parmley, and this one is no different! I was quickly pulled into the 1920s alongside Bethany who is trying to find her way in a world that has always been dictated for her. As she turns 18, she begins to learn of the opportunities and endless possibilities in her life. The author did such an amazing job truly setting the scenes of this era, and the story flowed so seamlessly. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in this series to continue the adventure!

Trapping the Butterfly
By: Debra Parmley

I have to say in full honesty that Debra Parmley has become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to any new release by her. This one was no exception. However, when I saw that this one took place in the 1920s and featured Al Capone’s group, I don’t think I could have picked up this book any faster.
This story did not disappoint. I read it in one complete sitting and I cannot wait for the rest of the series. This book completely delivers. It features a main character who is coming of age and is on the brink of womanhood and gaining all independence. She is everything I imagine a strong female in the 1920s would be. She has been raised by her aunt and uncle but things there have always kept her in a proverbial cage. When she travels with them to Hot Springs her life truly opens up. This is when we really see what I imagine the 1920s to be, from the descriptions of the clothes, the glamorous names being featured. This book absolutely features suspense, betrayal, romance and all the aspects of prohibition. This book was absolutely fantastic and I loved watching Bethany come into her own. I definitely recommend reading this one and adding the rest of the series on your books to read list!

This short book was an enjoyable start to the Butterflies Fly Free series.

I enjoyed the author’s writing style; it was easy to follow, and the descriptions painted a clear picture of the scene. You could get a sense of the characters’ personalities and emotions through the descriptive writing too before/without it being stated outright which I enjoyed.

The characters were well-written, their personalities shone and my blood boiled at the way poor Bethany was treated. The emotions you’re made to feel about some of the characters is very real and there were times when I very almost believed that Bethany wouldn’t get her HEA.
I absolutely loved Paul and there were a couple of times I was convinced he’s been killed and my heart almost broke.

My only criticism would be that the ending seemed a little rushed. I would have loved for the book to be longer so that the character development which occurred could be explored in more depth and that some of the scenes could have been extended. But given the length of the book, the author did a great job!

It was wonderful to see a historical romance set in the 1920’s as it is not something I have come across before. And the author has done an amazing job of bringing that era to life. Her descriptions, and the story, really made it feel like I was there in the 20s. I could imagine everything being described and it was fascinating to read.
The overall story was fun and easy to read. It is short book so did not take me long to get through it but it was thoroughly enjoyable all the same. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This book, set in the 1920’s, is very similar to the story of Rapunzel in my mind. Bethany is about to come of age in just a few days. She lives with her aunt and uncle after the untimely death of her parents. They decide as a family to travel to Hot Springs so that her aunt can experience some bathing treatments for ailments that she’s suffering.

Bethany is looking forward to being out from under the thumb of her aunt and uncle and she’s excited to spend her 18th birthday while on vacation. She’s tired of being told what to eat (and that’s when she’s allowed to), what to wear, how to act, etc.

She meets a man named Paul who warns her to avoid the 4th floor of the hotel she’s staying in because it’s inhabited by Al Capone. Paul is a detective trying to bring down the mobster. Bethany doesn’t take well to being told what to do and finds herself meeting Al Capone face to face.

This story is full of adventure, drama, and of finding oneself. I thoroughly enjoyed this rather short read and now look forward to reading the next story in this series.

This was a lovely coming of age story set in the 1920. It is a short story and I was able to read it in one sitting. The author does an amazing job and the research into the era from the gangsters to flappers this story has it all.
Bethany has lived a very sheltered life with her aunt and uncle. Since her parents died she has been living with them. They have kept her sheltered, trying to turn her into a proper lady. However as Bethany grows she feels a desired to spread her wings and be just like the other girls her age.

With her 18th birthday coming she finally realises this is her chance to get the freedom she craves, however her aunt and uncle has other plans.
Add to this the danger she faces when she catches the eye of a gangster as well as the eye of the policeman and this beautiful emerging butterfly may have her wings clipped before she even stretches them.

I really enjoyed this story. Bethany’s character is very strong and determined and even though she is nieve about life you can see her character growth as the story progresses.

Trapping the Butterfly (Butterflies Fly Free Series Book 1) by Debra Parmley. I was so excited to read this book because I live in Arkansas and have been to Hot Springs several times. The stories of Al Caone and the gangsters are legend there. This book did not disappoint. I have also been to the Arlington Hotel and it was described perfectly. I felt like I was there in the 20’s and it was so exciting. The story is based on a young girl, Bethany, who lives with her aunt and uncle and they have traveled to Hot Springs for Bethany’s 18th birthday and her Aunt’s health problems. Bethany lives under very strict rules of her Aunt and Uncle and she only wants to live like the other 18 year olds. Bethany has a trust fund that her Aunt and Uncle are also very protective of. They have arranged for Bethany to attend a banquet with one of her Uncles partners and they are hoping for a romantic match. Bethany attracts the attention of Paul a cop who warns her to stay away from a certain floor of the hotel because its full of gangsters. Unknowingly Bethany has already been spotted by one of the gangsters, Rocco. Will the excitement of life with a gangster be too much for Bethany to handle or will she run off with him and live the life she’s dreamed of. I loved this book sooo much! One of my favortie reads so far this year!

I found this to be a wonderful coming of age story set in the roaring twenties. The author did an amazing job of describing the settings, characters, and the feel of the roaring twenties. We have Bethany who feels trapped by her aunt and uncle, who have raised her for years. I loved how Bethany’s character development unfolded throughout the story. She has dreams and desires, but she is limited by her strict and abusive family members. With her 18th birthday just around the corner she has plans to set herself free, but she finds herself entangled with a business associate of her uncle’s, an associate of Al Capone, and the detective who is determined to take Capone down. I loved the character of Bethany and how she works so hard to find her own way. This is a great book for anyone looking for a descriptive well written story of a young girl finding her way in the roaring twenties.

This is a short historical romance. It takes place during prohibition in the 1920’s. After Bethany’s parents pass away, her aunt and uncle raise her. Being very strict religious people, they cloistered her away from experiencing life. Wanting to partake in her inheritance, they had plans for her. Bethany would soon turn eighteen and she had plans of her own. She wanted to travel and experience life. They travel to Arkansas to experience the medicinal baths for her aunt’s condition. Having a very sheltered upbringing, Bethany is way too innocent and gets herself into some trouble.

I enjoyed the time era the story took place in. The author did a great job world building with the flappers and the gangsters. The descriptions made me feel as if I was there. I understand that the main character was sheltered but Bethany was a little too naïve for me. I did like Paul a lot and the tenderness he felt for Bethany was sweet.

An entertaining and engaging historical romance set in Hot Springs, Arkansas in the 1920’s. Bethany is keen to celebrate her eighteenth birthday at the Arlington Hotel, she wants to raise her hemline, cut her hair into a bob, and learn to do the Charleston. Unfortunately, her aunt and uncle keep her, and her inheritance extremely close and control every aspect of her life. They want her to return from her holiday engaged to her uncle’s new business partner. However, their stay at the Arlington changes everything for Bethany when one of Al Capone’s men takes a shine to her. Detective Paul Tollick is determined to keep Bethany away from the dangerous gangsters and keep her safe, but he didn’t expect to feel instantly drawn to her himself. Bethany is caught between deadly criminals and an oppressive family, but maybe Paul can help her gain her freedom, and she can then follow her heart. The descriptive narrative brought both the characters and the setting vividly to life making me feel immersed in the storyline, whilst the added historical details made me feel as though I had been transported back in time to the roaring 20’s. I loved the mix of characters and I found Bethany a very likeable and relatable young women, who I felt engaged with. This was an enjoyable read and one which I would recommend.

Trapping the Butterfly is the first book in the Butterflies Fly Free series. Set in the 1920s, we meet Bethany, who lives with her domineering Aunt and Uncle. When they decide to go to Hot Springs, Arkansas, for her Aunt’s health, Bethany’s life changes unexpectantly. The story is a fast read but draws readers into the Roaring 20s with music, dancing, and gangsters. I enjoyed watching Bethany grow into her own woman. The story not only captures a historical period but also a young woman embracing and learning about the dangers of the world she lives in. The story and characters were interesting and kept my attention. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Time swiftly got away from me while I was reading. I wasn’t ready to leave the characters yet! An orphan with an inheritance, left with unkind relatives. A handsome lawman. Seemingly chivalrous gangsters. Women who make poor choices. Unfortunately, all these types of people can be found in our everyday lives. I was so proud of the heroine for standing up for herself.

This author always delights me with her books set in different time periods and cultures. The Roaring 20’s were a time of change and mafia. Bethany wants some freedom from her aunt and uncle. In the heart of Chicago, she finds Al Capone and his gang. I loved reading and watching Bethany develop into the strong woman she could be. The characters were a delight. The author takes such details that, at times, it feels like you could be there with Bethany. I found the writing stunning and full of delicious detail. I devoured this book in one sitting. Wonderful read! I love reading books by this author, she offers many different stories from many different periods. Set in the 1920s, I know many have imagined living in this time with the flapper fashion, Al Capone, The Charleston and women learning to become empowered. Watching Bethany realize who she is, what she wants in life, what she likes and how she wants to live is so sweet. I could not imagine living day in and day out in a corset, and it was fun to see Bethany tasting that freedom. Her aunt and uncle are cruel and absolutely ridiculous. They seem shady with regards to her inheritance and treat her like dirt, so seeing how sweet she is, is a breath of fresh air. Bethany and Paul are lovely together and I couldn’t see her with anyone else. I wish I could see how the couple worked out in the end, but I’ll leave that to my own imagination.

Historical romance
This is a captivating read. The author weaves a story immersed in the roaring 1920s with flappers, gangsters and romance. Bethany is a young girl trying to find her place as she comes unto her own. She has a battle on her hands as her aunt and uncle have a different idea for her future. I found myself caught up in the story right through until the end. The characterisation and imagery were well done. Recommend.

Trapping the Butterfly is the first book in the Butterflies Fly Free series by Debra Parmley. It is an historical romance- set in the 1920’s, it’s a fascinating coming of age story, with self-discovery, drama, angst, adventure, challenges, family dynamics, control, choices, and breaking free.
Bethany Robinson is just coming of age. Her life has been strictly controlled by her domineering Aunt and Uncle, but a visit to Hot Springs might just see her emerge from her cocoon and find her wings. This is a short story- so it made for a quick and easy read. I read it in one easy sitting.
Ms. Parmley has brought the 1920’s to life here, her historical details adding a very vivid and authentic feel to the story.
Looking forward to exploring Book #2- ‘Dancing Butterfly’, which is Suki’s story.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Debra Parmley!

Trapping the ButterflyTrapping the Butterfly by Debra Parmley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Trapping the Butterfly is Book one in the Butterflies Free Series. It is set in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in the year 1926, during what was known as the Roaring Twenties. Bethany is on the cusp of turning eighteen and looking forward to setting her plan in motion. Once she turns eighteen, she should be receiving her inheritance and looks forward to getting away from her overbearing aunt and uncle who monitor her every move. Bethany wants to be free to cut her hair short, learn the Charleston and wants to start dating. She is strictly forbidden from doing any of these while living with her aunt and uncle because they consider these behaviors to be unladylike and unacceptable. Ladies do not smoke, they do not drink, and they certainly do not cut their hair short. According to Bethany’s aunt, no good man will want to marry a woman who displays any of these horrendous and appalling behaviors. Every move Bethany makes is dictated by her severely strict aunt, right down to how much she is allowed to eat so that she does not become a “fatty”, as her aunt likes to remind her of often.

When Bethany gets a chance to go with her aunt and uncle to Hot Springs so that her aunt can see a doctor, she feels that it is the perfect opportunity to start freeing herself from them. While in Hot Springs, Bethany meets Detective Paul Tollick by accident and learns that the famous mobster Al Capone is staying at the same hotel as her and her aunt and uncle. Al Capone and his gang are on the fourth floor of the Arlington, and Paul tells her to stay away from him because he is bad news. Although Paul is several years her senior he is drawn to her innocent beauty and finds himself wanting to see her again. Bethany also finds herself attracted to Paul and looks forward to when she can speak with him again. When Paul learns that one of Al Capone’s gangsters has taken a liking to Bethany, he vows to protect her at all costs.

First of all, can we discuss that absolutely exquisite, eye-catching, cover and book title. Oh, my goodness, they were what compelled me to read the synopsis and ultimately read the book and I am so happy that I did. This was a beautifully written and engaging story with a refreshing storyline that hooked me from the first page. It was so different from the books that I have read, and it really captivated my attention. The attention to detail and historical background were superbly done. The characters were ones that you either loved immediately or hated, as in the case of Bethany’s aunt. Bethany was sweet, kind, gentle, and innocent. I felt myself rooting for Bethany to get out from under her aunt’s thumb and free herself from the abusive behaviors of her aunt and uncle. To some extent it could be understood why Bethany’s aunt and uncle were against women smoking, drinking, and displaying what they felt like was appalling behavior in a woman. It was a far different time and taking place when women were just learning to free themselves of the constraints and restrictions imposed by society. Bethany’s aunt was raised during a different time but that did not give her the right to abuse Bethany and not allow her to eat. My heart went out to Bethany, and I rooted for her to be free like a butterfly. I highly recommend this book and am anxious to read not only the rest of this series but more by this author.

Trapping the Butterfly is a coming-of-age short story and the first book in the Butterflies Fly Free Series. I enjoy Debra’s diversity in the genres she writes.
This book is set in the roaring 20’s in a time of fast women, prohibition and the harsh underworld of gangsters toting Tommy guns and Al Capone.
This very well written intriguing and fascinating story will have you engaged and on the edge of your seat from start to finish. It’s easy to see Debra’s passion shine through in the writing and descriptive details make it easy to imagine that time.
This is Bethany’s story. One where this naive and sheltered young woman longs to be free of societies expectations and the harshness and confinements placed upon her by her family. Her clothes, her time, her choices. It’s easy to imagine the flappers dancing around in their short skirts and bobbed hair.
Will this young woman be drawn into a harsh world she had no idea existed or will she find love of a good man?
Whelp to find out you will have to get a copy. You will not be disappointed.
